《The Bet (Lesbian Story)》Epilogue

The chilling air-conditioned air of the airport hit her as soon as she crossed the sliding door that led to the departures area. But at the moment the cold air was the last thing on her mind. No, there was so much more for her to worry about. She was excited, she couldn't deny it. But there was also a sizeable part of her that was scared. She'd be on her own, alone in a new city, leaving everything she always knew behind.

She took a deep breath as her gaze fell upon the check-in line, her heart beating faster with every second that passed. But she did her best to remain calm. She needed to be strong, she couldn't give up now.

"Why don't you three go eat something while I do the check in? It's mostly boring paperwork anyway, I wouldn't want to put you through that." She joked lightly, looking back at Manuel and his parents. They promptly nodded, saying that they would be waiting on the airport café.

Amy made her way to the line, with her ticket and luggage in hand. She still felt somewhat numb, it all still felt too surreal. Like all of this was just something out of the imagination of some young Brazilian woman who didn't have enough to do. But she pushed herself further nonetheless.

"Let me guess, 10:15 to Boston?" She heard from the check in line. She looked up, surprised to see her doctor, Diana, looking down at her with a warm smile on her face.

"Doctor Abbott, what a surprise! And yes actually, how did you know?" She answered, blushing slightly and trying to play it cool.

She had in fact bailed on her last few sessions with the doctor and honestly, she didn't think she would ever see her again. But then again, fate always had a thing for fucking up with her, didn't it? Diana smiled holding up her ticket, which she promptly saw had the same flight number as hers, and answering her question.

"I would say so, after you failed to come to your last few sessions I thought you had given up on your treatment. Although looking at you now, I have to say you look a lot better." Diana answered, her eyes trailing down her body quickly before she locked eyes with her former patient again.

"Yeah, about that... I had some stuff to take care of." Amy answered lamely. How would she be able to explain that the reason she hadn't gotten out of the house for basically anything besides her physiotherapy sessions, which she was dragged into by Manuel, was because she was trying to mend her broken heart? That sounded absolutely pathetic, mostly because it was.

"So, mind if I ask what are you doing here?" Diana asked curiously, she didn't think she would ever see Amy again, but now that she was right there in front of her, she couldn't help but want to carry on a conversation.

"Actually, I am moving to Cambridge. I was accepted into Harvard's Medical School." She answered blushing even more, that was one of the things Diana liked most about her. How shy she was, it just made her want to take the girl in her arms and don't let go. Even though she knew it was wrong, and quite frankly, against the law seeing as she was still a minor.

"Harvard? Oh my God Amy, that's great!" Diana beamed, proud of the young girl in front of her.

She knew that Amy was a smart girl, learning that she had been accepted into one of the best universities in the country didn't exactly came as a surprise for her. What really did surprise her, was the fact that fate once again, brought their paths together.

"And what about you doctor Abbott? Vacation?" Amy asked, motioning to Diana's luggage and flight ticket. Diana smiled lightly.

"Well, believe it or not, I was offered a job in Boston. And also, please call me Diana, having you calling me by my last name makes me feel so old." She complained, making Amy chuckle lightly.

"Well, Diana, talk about a coincidence no?" She said, emphasizing Diana's name, but still blushing profusely and looking down at her own ticket. She still wasn't a pro at social interactions, even though her time with Katherine had helped her a lot with that. As much as she tried to deny it.

"Indeed." Diana answered, now taking advantage of the fact that Amy wasn't focussed on her, to take her in even further.

She had certainly gained some of the weight that she had surely lacked in the last month, her body was definitely shapelier and her skin more rosy and full of life. She also seemed to be carrying herself way better now, the effects of her comatose time barely visible on her body. Diana had to admit, even if she tried to deny it, Amy was a beautiful girl, and she looked good. Really good.

"Next!" They heard on of the attendants in the check in area shout, cutting their conversation short. Amy nodded towards the doctor.

"See you on the plane I guess. It was nice seeing you Diana." She said and Diana smiled back.

"See you then Amy." She answered, watching as Amy made her way towards the check in counter. Moments later she felt her arms being tugged, she looked back to see her ex-girlfriend, Amber, looking up suspiciously at her.

"Did I just hear you calling that girl Amy? As in, the patient that you 'definitely don't have a crush on'?" She said, putting as much sarcasm in the last few words as she could.

"I already told you Amber, there's nothing going on here. And besides I was as surprised to see her here as you were." Diana answered, her eyes still locked on the young girl that had caught her attention all of these months back. Amber just smirked.

"Well, she's pretty, I'll give her that, but remember Diana, she's still very much underage." Amber said, making Diana roll her eyes.

"I'm well aware Amber, don't worry, I won't do anything stupid." She answered, although, part of her wasn't exactly sure about it.

Amy quickly checked in her bags and made her way back to the airport's café, where Manuel, Maria and João were waiting for her. She took a seat beside them, smiling brightly, unaware that a certain blonde was making her way to her table at that exact moment.

Katherine walked towards them, her whole body shaking. She didn't know if she ever felt that nervous before, but right now she had to give her all. She couldn't give up on Amy, not when she knew that what they shared was real. She just needed to prove that to her as well.

"Amy..." Katherine barely croaked out, when she finally reached her table.

It was the first time seeing her in a month, and she couldn't believe how good she looked. She had gained her weight back, and was definitely looking stronger and healthier. Right now, all Katherine wanted was to wrap her in her arms, but she knew she couldn't. She had fucked up too much.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Manuel asked menacingly, immediately getting up putting himself in front of Amy. He knew there was a reason he didn't trust that girl, and the nerve she had! Appearing here of all places, when Amy was finally trying to move on!

"Amy, please, let me talk to you." Katherine pleaded, not looking at Manuel, but at the small girl behind him.

Amy took a deep breath, she wasn't expecting this, not here, not now. But still, some part of her still wanted to have that conversation. There was still some things needed to know, and if she didn't do it now, she wouldn't have another chance.

"It's okay El. Just give me a few minutes." She said, walking further and patting her best friend on the shoulder. Manuel glared at the blonde, but didn't comment any further and went back to sit with his parents. Amy motioned for Katherine to follow her, and she did, with her heart in her hands.

"You have five minutes, be quick." Amy said coldly, once they reached a somewhat private place inside the airport. Katherine breathed deeply before she spoke.

"I've been trying to reach you for the past month." She started, Amy snorted.

"Clearly I didn't want to talk to you." She replied, trying to keep her voice even, but it was hard. Seeing Katherine again made her heart jump in the most unimaginable ways.

"Amy, please, you have to believe me. I fucked up, but I really love you." Katherine said, she just wanted one more chance.

"I don't know if I can believe you." Amy answered, she wanted to, but even if she did. What would it change? She was leaving, she wouldn't see Katherine again, at least not for a long time.

"Please Amy, give me a chance." Katherine begged, tears starting to form in the corner of her eyes.

"But you had so many chances Katherine, you had so many fucking chances to tell me everything. And I had to find out from fucking Daniel? Right after we had sex? Do you have any idea how that broke me? How utterly humiliating it was?" She asked, her eyes now filling with tears as well. But she needed answers.

"I was afraid, I was so fucking afraid of losing you. You have to believe me, I called off the bet long before, on our first night together. I admit that what we had started because of something as ridiculous as a bet, but I called it off when I realized how important you were... how important you are for me." Katherine said, pouring her heart out. Somehow Amy knew that she was telling the truth, but did that really change anything?

"Katherine... I am leaving. I'm moving to Cambridge." Amy said in a small voice, making both of their hearts clench.

"We can make this work, I mean, you can always come back to visit and I..." Katherine started but was quickly cut off by Amy's lips on hers. She immediately melted into her, holding her close, kissing her for as long as she could. Tears piled up in both their eyes as they pressed their foreheads together, because deep down, they knew that that was goodbye.

"I'm so sorry, but I think we lost our chance." Amy said, before reluctantly parting from her.

"You might leave, but know one thing Amy. I will never give up on you." Katherine said, with a look of utter determination on her tear stained face. And just like that she turned on her heels, leaving Amy alone with her thoughts. That was goodbye.

She sat on the chair, looking out the plane's window and imagining what was to come. This was it, the beginning of the rest of her life. That was what she needed, a fresh start, away from the painful memories. A new beginning. Somehow, that made her feel better, the painful throbbing in her chest slowly started to fade.

"Well, look like we'll be sitting next to each other neighbour." She looked up, seeing Diana's green eyes looking down at her, a smile made its way on her lips.

"So it seems. Seems like fate keeps bringing us together." Amy commented, looking up at the young doctor. Maybe there was something there after all. Diana smirked, taking her seat beside Amy and lightly grazing her hand in hers.

"It sure does. Who knows, maybe it knows something that we don't." Diana finally answered, squeezing her former patient's hand lightly before letting go. Diana looked down at the girl beside her with only one thought, why not take a chance?
