《The Bet (Lesbian Story)》Chapter 34

He looked down at his desk, the countless business contracts no longer made any sense to him, no, his mind was elsewhere at that moment. He closed his eyes shut. The constricting pain in his body was no longer strange to him, after all, he had been living with it for so long. It almost seemed that it was a part of him.
Although, it was on days like these that he wondered, on days like these that he knew, it was almost too unbearable. He forced himself not to cry, the memories of so long ago came flooding into his mind.
Memories of when he was happy... it seemed like eons ago, and now, the only thing he had left from those wonderful days, was an old and worn out photograph. A small knock on his door took his mind out of nostalgia and back into reality.
"Yes?" He said, his voice shook slightly. The door opened as a small woman made her way in.
"Excuse me, Mr. Davis. Your 11 o'clock is here to see you." His secretary said in a small voice. He nodded.
"Thank you, Stella, please send him in." He said and she nodded with her usual warm bright smile.
Moments later, a tall slender man walked in. He had a leader briefcase in his right hand while his left played with the hem of his fedora hat. He took a seat at the chair in front of his desk. Putting his leader briefcase on his side.
"Mr. Davis, good to see you. Everything good?" He said as he reached his hand for Mr. Davis to shake. Mr. Davis mustered a smile and answered.
"As good as it gets. What about you Mr. Lopez?" He nodded.
"Good." He said simply. Mr. Davis realized he was stalling, and that could only mean one thing. He found something out, and it wasn't good.
For years now he knew what might have happened, but the thought only hurt him more. As they said, hope is the last one to die, but at that very moment, it seemed that it was on its death bed.
"Aren't you going to say what you found?" Mr. Davis asked, he couldn't bear to wait any longer, even if it meant finding out what he feared the most.

"Mr. Davis, there's no easy way to say this, but..." He paused, not really sure of how to complete his sentence. Mr. Davis sighed heavily.
"She's dead, isn't she?" He asked with dread, Mr. Lopez only nodded, confirming his suspicions.
The pain hit him like a truck. His heart constricted in his chest as the tears he had tried to hold for so long fell incessantly down his cheeks. This was it, the confirmation of his biggest fear. For so many years he looked for her, and now, he knew. The only woman he ever truly loved, was gone.
"There's something else." Mr. Lopez said, as he slid a piece of paper through the table. Towards Mr. Davis. He forced himself to look down at it, clumsily wiping the tears away from his face.
It was a photograph, a young girl, no more that seventeen. With dark long hair and green eyes. She looked so much like... but could it be?
"That's her daughter."
"I was thinking, we could actually get a bigger apartment this time. I've always wanted a pet and god knows that we can't have one in an apartment this size." I said as I gathered some papers from the counter. Amber had been awfully quiet and that made me frown.
"Amber, what's going on? You haven't said anything in a while." I said looking down at her, she was sitting on the couch in our living room, looking at the floor. I felt uneasy, something was up.
Amber had been acting weird for some time now, since she found out about my new job opportunity. Although I didn't get it, she seemed to be happy when I first told her. She said a change of scenery would be great for us, and yet here she was, sulking on our couch.
"Just a little distracted." She said, her voice seemed to be off somehow, like she was afraid, dreading to say what was really on her mind. But I knew her better than that, I knew what was going on.
"You're not coming, are you?" I asked, even though, deep down, I already knew the answer. I felt myself shaking, anger, sadness and despair filled my being at once. She didn't answer. I sighed deeply before making my way towards her.

"So, you're not coming with me?" I asked in disbelief, forcing myself not to cry.
After all these years, everything that I fought for, the endless sleepless nights I spent studying and working. It was all finally starting to pay off and she was just going to ditch me?
"Boston is a long way from home." She said simply, I noticed that she was also trying to hold her tears at bay. Still I didn't get her, we promised to stay together, always, she was supposed to be my rock. She had accepted it gladly when I first told her about it.
"Weren't you the one that said a change of scenery would be great for our relationship?" I said back, still trying to understand her.
"I was caught off guard when you first told me, the idea hadn't completely sunk in." She answered and I shook my head, going to sit down beside her. I took her face, cupping it with my hands and making her look at me. I could see the tears in her light hazel eyes.
"Amber, tell me what's wrong." She looked at me for a few seconds, but soon enough looked away. For a split second, I saw something in her eyes, I knew her long enough to know what it meant. But could it be true? Was that guilt?
And sudden realization hit me. But no, she wouldn't do that to me, would she? We've been together for so long! I knew that we had being growing apart for some time now, but it was nothing that could not be fixed, we've been through some rough patches before, and we always came around in the end. But now, looking at her, I knew that that was something our relationship would not survive going through.
"What's her name?" I asked simply, I felt numb. Amber looked up at me, shock and surprise adorned her face all at once.
"Diana..." She started, but soon enough closed her mouth. I sighed deeply looking down at the floor. I didn't bother to hold my tears anymore. It seemed like everything was falling apart.
"I've known you for twenty years, we've been together for twelve. I know you well enough to know when something's up." I said, my voice, although slightly shaken by the fact I was crying, was calm. It didn't make sense. I should be livid right now, I should be screaming and cussing. But yet, I wasn't.
"I was going to tell you." She said, after a while. I laughed bitterly.
"Oh, were you? That makes me feel so much better." I answered and she flinched at my words, but honestly, right now, I didn't give a crap about her feelings.
"I'm sorry." She said and I got up, heading for the counter. It was a weird feeling, to realize that that was the end, the end of our relationship. And the sad thing was that, this was long overdue. Maybe if I had broken it off sooner, the situation wouldn't have escalated to this point.
"Don't be, we both know this was bound to end. Although I wish we had broken it off before you went to find someone else." I said simply, motioning at the two of us. Again, she flinched at my words.
I looked back at her, weirdly enough, I wasn't angry at her. I don't know why, maybe because I knew that even though this was only happening now, our relationship had been pretty much dead for a while. Or maybe it was because I felt guilty myself, after all, I would be lying if I said that I hadn't been thinking about someone else lately. Which was pretty much even more fucked up on my part, because I bet that Amber's girl is at least over eighteen.
"I wish we didn't have to end like this. I do love you." She said in a small voice, I smiled sadly.
"You're just not in love with me." I said and she nodded. I could understand that, because frankly I felt the same way. I sighed before saying.
"I think that it is for the best. It was good while it lasted."

Needletongue, Carrotcake
The world isn't fair. If anything, the inherent injustice of the world is what separates it from the fiction we so adore. Luis Freighthold knew this all too well, and that was why it took a bit longer than it should have to realise when he suddenly had everything he could ever have wanted. Raised in a working-class single-father home, Luis had no other escape than fiction. Specifically, vampire stories of varying quality and genre. There was something appealing about the ability to fly, turn into shadows and become smoke. Danger. An unfamiliarity with the social world that rejected him so. Was it so wrong for him to hope for a different life? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, now he had it—a lust for blood and abilities beyond the understanding of civil man. Could you really say that he had anything left to complain about? A vampire story following an unconventional vampire boy forced to accept that maybe becoming a vampire doesn't magically solve all your problems. As a matter of fact, it might just make a whole bunch of them even worse. Regardless, Luis is prepared to try everything to live up to the vampire books he had previously gorged on. What did it matter that his vampire form had no teeth, replaced instead by a long, needle-tipped tongue? He was still a vampire, wasn't he? Chapters are around 10 A4 pages long, releasing once a week on Mondays, 01:00 CET.
