《The Bet (Lesbian Story)》Chapter 25

Coma, a state of unconsciousness in which a person cannot be awakened, from the Greek "koma", meaning deep sleep. To everyone around me, that basically was what I was, in an unending state of deep sleep, but for me, not so much.

My eyelids felt extremely heavy. I had the sensation of floating. I couldn't feel my legs, arms or any other muscle whatsoever. But still, my brain was in full function. I could hear everything that was going on around me.

I knew that my doctor, Diana, coincidently the same one that took care of my back, would check on me roughly every two or three hours when she was on duty. I heard Manuel talking to her a couple of times.

Manuel came in to see me everyday, he would stay for at least one hour. He would read, tell me stories and sometimes even sing. Extremely off key actually. If I could feel my face I would definitely be smiling. Even the people from the pet shop came to visit once. They brought flowers and balloons from what I could hear them saying.

One thing that I couldn't ignore though was Katherine. She hadn't shown up. I didn't even know if she knew where I was or what had happened to me. Or if she knew, she hadn't come visit. And that hurt, it hurt bad.

I thought things were good between us. I couldn't deny the fact that she was getting to me, and honestly, I was liking it. Lately all I could think about was her lips on mine, her beautiful smile, and her contagious laughter. And lately I had a lot of time to think. The truth was, I missed her. I missed her voice, and even her sarcasm and playful smirk.

I just hoped I could get out of this one. I needed to.

All I could do was stare blankly into my phone screen. Four fucking days and no word from Amy. I'd been trying to call, been sending texts and nothing. No reply in days. I was starting to loose hope. At this point, honestly, I was starting to freak out. I had no idea what had happened to her but now I was sure as hell that something had. And I needed to find out what.

I breathed in and dialled her phone number. As I've been frequently doing for the past four days. I hit dial and waited, listening to the beeps and waiting for someone to pick up. I waited and waited until, once again, it hit voicemail.

Was it weird that even though it was just the voicemail hearing her voice relaxed me somewhat.

I lied down on the bed and closed my eyes. My head was killing me.

"Katherine honey?" My mom quietly entered the room. The slight glow of light from the sunray hit my face. My head almost exploded there and then.

"Yes?" I dragged down.

"Are you ok? You haven't left your room in two days. I'm worried about you." She said and I put a pillow over my face trying to hide from the light.

"I'm fine." I managed to say through the pillow.

"Oh sweetie, you always were a crappy liar." She said and I felt a light tilt in my bed, making me realise she sat down by my side. Great.

"So, are you going to tell me what's wrong?" She asked again and I breathed deeply before answering.

"I just feel sick. I think I'm coming down with something. Feels like my head is about to explode." I lied. Well, wasn't entirely a lie, my head was about to explode. I felt my mom's hand gently caressing my hair. It was a good feeling.

"I'm going to get you some meds and some water ok?" I only nodded and she kissed my cheek before exiting the room. I just closed my eyes enjoying the silence.

Which was extremely short lived actually. My phone started beeping loudly and incessantly. I grabbed it quickly answering in hopes of ending that extremely high-pitched noise.

"Hello?" I said, my voice low.

"Hmm, is this Katherine?" I heard a guy's voice on the other side of the phone.

"Yes, who's asking?" I asked while massaging my temples.

"This is Manuel, I'm calling from Amy's phone..." He started but I couldn't let him finish.

"Where is she? What the hell happened to her? Why hasn't she answered when I called?" I couldn't stop asking. I just wanted to know about her so badly.

"Calm down, I'll explain everything." The guy said. He had this deep strong accent and he sounded extremely tired. I just let him finish whatever he had to say.

"Amy has been in an accident. She's currently on Saint Jude's Hospital. She suffered some traumas and they had to put her into an induced coma..." After that I couldn't even listen anymore.

Coma? Trauma? What the hell happened? I felt the stinging tears run down my cheek. Before I knew it I was already bawling my eyes out. I knew that something had happened, but this? Oh my god Amy.

I needed to see her.

"Hello? Hello? Katherine?" No answer. All I could hear was background sounds. And then nothing. Well, she knew where to find Amy if she wanted to.
