common sense said

"go back and reconcile."

but common sense forgot about her smile

"Marry me, Amelia."

Amelia stared at him flabbergasted. In that moment, as soon as those three words left his lips, her mind went blank. As she stared at him, his determined and hopeful face observing her, unblinking, she noticed nothing crossed her mind. No words, no thoughts, no images. She didn't even know where to start. Here was Gilbert, her best friend, her confidant, her soulmate, was here, asking her to marry her, and she didn't know what to think.

She could use any excuse, like that he just sprung it on her, with no warning beforehand. But that was a lie. Almost a year ago, he had indirectly told her he had feelings for her and she had turned him down. Now she had given him hope by telling him she liked him back. It wasn't false hope, she liked him alright. Loved him, so deeply and purely she'd kiss him right there and then. Yet there was something holding her back.

It wasn't doubt, or lack of feelings. It wasn't fear of the future, or indecision. There was nobody else she'd rather be with, and there wasn't any fear about what anybody else would say. It wasn't any of that. In fact, it didn't have to do with anything she felt. It had to do with Gilbert's future, and what it meant to it if he left Winifred.

He saw the hesitation flash across her baby blue eyes. "I don't mean get married now, just..." he rubbed his tired face, his brown eyes piercing right into hers. "I wanted to let you know that I'm willing to play the long game with you, a future of us...together." that last word made Amelia's heart flutter in her chest. For a hot second, she thought Gilbert would manage to hear it. "Gilbert, I...I can't." a frown sketched itself onto his face. "But you said-"

"And I meant every word I said." when she saw the lack of conviction his eyes read, she held his hands in hers, a caring look on her face as she looked up at him. Her hair stuck to her face, wet driblets crawling down her face as she remained wet from falling in the lake. "There is no doubt in my mind and heart that I love you Gilbert Blythe." his eyes flickered down to her lips, so quickly that Amelia nearly missed it.

"But?" he asked playfully, but Amelia saw behind it. "But I can't put my feelings above yours. What about Souvorne?" Gilbert opened his mouth, but Amelia pressed a finger onto his lips, shushing him. "I don't think I could live with the thought that I stole that future from you, your life dream, because of my selfishness." he looked at her, a deep passion in his eyes as he brought her hands onto his lips, kissing her knuckles softly.

"I love you, you know that?" Amy smiled at him, nodding as her eyes fluttered shut. She felt so peaceful, like all her problems were resolved. Even if he choice to follow his career dream, just hearing that he loved her was enough for a lifetime. It felt like they had played their cards, and it was now up to fate, like a game of chess; Amelia had her turn, and it was Gilbert's turn to decide with what gameplay he would choose to play. And only one ended up with him next to the queen.

"Gil, whatever you decide, you know I'll stand by you no matter what." she put emphasis on the 'no matter what', trying to make her words come through as true, because they were. "For once, put your happiness above everyone else's. This is your future, nobody else's." he grinned softly, slightly positioning an eyebrow. "Even if the choice isn't you?"

Amelia smiled, shaking her head as her chest vibrated with chuckles. "It'd hurt me, yes. But not as much as it'd hurt me thinking you'd lost your future dream because you didn't think this carefully." Gilbert looked at her with disbelief and awe. "Have I told you that I love your kindness the most?"

Amelia chuckled before looking away, realising how close they were. They stared each other in an odd way, as if they were waiting for the other to make a move. The urge and the moment were too strong to just let them pass by. She hesitated for a millisecond, before softly cupping his face and kissing him. She had realised that nobody could steal anyone from you if they wanted to be with you. If it was meant to be, they would end up together.

His body loosened against hers as his arms slithered around her waist. They pulled apart, taking shaky shallow breaths. He leans in again, this time shorter as Amelia smiles into the kiss, pulling apart as she leans her forehead against his, sighing contently. If it were up to them, they'd spend the rest of their days in that position. Minutes passed, seemingly like hours or days, maybe even lifetimes before any of the two said anything. Amelia was the first to move, having her eyes remain close so she wouldn't have to face reality. "Go." she barely said above a whisper, her eyes opening as the sun shone on Gilbert's face, giving him some sort of god-like glow.

She leaned her hands on his shoulders, grinning like a child. "Go make a decision, mister." Gilbert chuckled slightly, nodding as the light basked him, but it was Amelia who walked away, waving as he followed with his gaze.

And it that very moment, in which his eyes observed every movement Amelia Covey made, he realised he'd need a lot of convincing to give up not kissing her for the rest of his life. Because she just seemed like a gift sent from heaven itself.
