You were my life, but life is far away from fair

Was I stupid to love you?

Was I reckless to help?

Was it obvious to everybody else?

Amelia sat, her legs crossed as the soft breeze blew on her short blonde hair, gently plucking the petals of a daisy. She and Diana had gone to visit Anne after the Sunday church, reading her article about gender justice that had left Josie running away, tears falling down her humiliated face. Anne sat in between the two girls, a horrified look on her face, noting that it was never her intention to hurt anyone. She just wanted to expose the truth. Was that so wrong? "How bad was it?" the red-head broke the silence, avoiding their gazes as she stared down at the grass. "One hundred percent bad. Mathematically speaking." Diana spoke, and Anne groaned loudly, burying her head in her hands, her straw hat slipping sideways. "How did it get so mixed up? I was writing about justice and equality! I wasn't even thinking about Josie."

"That much was clear." Diana said coldly, looking straight forward. Amelia frowned at her, shaking her head. "Anne, what you did was brave thing. You stood for us girls when no one else would." Anne bit her lip, giving Amelia a sad smile. "But maybe you should apologise."

"I can't do that, I didn't do anything wrong! And contrary to popular belief, I believe a newspaper is where these ideas belong." Amelia rested her hand on top of Anne's reassuringly. "I agree with everything you wrote. If you don't stand up for us, who will? And I know you didn't mean to, but Josie's feelings were hurt in the process." Anne bit her lip, slowly nodding as she sighed, shrugging. "You're right, Amelia. When did you get so wise?" the blonde chuckled, flicking her hair over her shoulder. "So, you and Isaac are engaged now..." Amelia wiggled her eyebrows, laughing as she watched Anne blush.

"I'm surprised he wants to be with me, with all the mistakes I make." Diana frowned at Anne's statement. "That boy is head over heels for you. He'd probably follow you around the world if it was what'd make you happy." Anne bit her lip gleefully, as Amelia watched her soon-to-be-sister-in-law. "I better be maid of honour or I'm throwing some punches." Diana agreed, pointing at herself too to be a bridesmaid. Anne rested her head on her hand, looking up at the cloudless blue sky.

"Can't believe how fast time flies. I remember the day we all met." Diana remarked, obtaining a fond smile from the two girls. "I was so naive back then." Amelia said, making Anne raise an eyebrow. "You still are." Amelia laughed, softly shoving her as Diana turned to Amelia. "So...you and Gilbert?"

Amelia's smile faded, remembering yesterday's occurrences in a matter of seconds. For a blissful moment, she had forgotten everything that had gone down between them two. How she didn't have her confidant no longer. The one person that she usually went to advice for, was currently seeing another girl. She played with her ring finger, sighing. "I messed it up. I ignored the signs that told me we weren't meant to be anything else than friends and I tried to anyway. And now I've lost his friendship too." her voice quivered, as she looked down, noticing she was pressing her hands too tightly and that her nails were digging into her skin.

"You really think he's that into that Winifred?" Diana asked carefully, glancing at Amelia to make sure she wasn't crossing any lines too soon. Amelia shrugged, plucking the grass one by one as she avoided the girls gaze. "He made a decision, and I have to respect that." Anne frowned, clicking her tongue as she sat up straight. "He's obviously got feelings for you, and is confused." Amelia scoffed, shaking her head. "You know, I didn't think you'd give up." Diana baited Amelia, and the redhead raised her eyebrows, quickly realising what Diana's intentions were.

"I don't give up. This is different." Amelia excused herself, as she tried to defend herself. "Is it? You're scared and its blinding you, but if you fought for him, then I'm sure you'd be succesful, and-" Amelia interrupted Anne hastefully, standing up. "Maybe I'm just tired of being dissappointed and getting my heart broken!" she snapped, immediately regretting it as she saw her friends wince at her loud voice. She looked down at her shoes, dusting her dress off before anyone spoke again. "Why doesn't he fight for me?" she said so softly, but they both managed to hear her. "Amelia, wait-"

"I have to go." she choked, walking away as she tried so hard to fight the tears. But there was one thought that she couldn't get out of her head, and it was the idea of fighting for him...

...and being successful.

Gilbert sat in the kitchen, a stoic look on his face as he stared straight ahead, stirring his mug of coffee with a small silver spoon. Bash bottle-fed his small daughter, glancing at Gilbert a few times, trying to make out what was up with him. "You gonna keep on stirring your coffee or are you actually gonna drink it?" Bash chuckled as Gilbert snapped out of his thoughts, taking a sip, realising it was too cold. He sighed, standing up and pouring the drink down the sink before leaning his back against the counter. Bash raised an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to say something.

"Amelia told me she had feelings for me." Bash gasped, nearly dropping the milk bottle as he stared at Gilbert, trying to see if he was lying.

He wasn't.

A smile broke on Bash's face as he softly put his sleeping daughter in her crib, before doing a little victory dance, clapping. "Boy, I knew you two liked each other, it's so obvious! I mean, you never stop talking about her, and the way you look at each other, I mean..." his talk faded as he stopped moving, realising Gilbert was not celebrating alongside him. "Oh no...what did you tell her?" Gilbert sighed, scratching the back of his head. "What was I supposed to say? Winnie was there." Bash groaned loudly, slapping his face as he shook his head at Gilbert. "So you're telling me, you turned down Amelia, the girl you've basically been in love with since you met her, for a girl you've known for a total of two minutes." Bash paused, before adding. "What were you thinking?!"

"I didn't turn her down, I just..." he trailed off, shifting his weight as he avoided Bash's gaze. Bash widened his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest. "Please don't tell me you told her you also had feelings for Winifred." when he crossed upon Gilbert's guilty looking face, he groaned again, throwing an old dirty rag to his face. "Idiot!" Gilbert lifted his arms in surrender, nodding. "I know! I know." he sat back down again, rubbing his face tiredly. Bash sat next to him, looking at him curiously. "So, how do you plan winning her back?"

Gilbert looked up confused, slightly frowning. "By the way she treated me, I'm pretty sure she wants nothing to do with me." Bash chuckled, muttering under his breath. "Probably." Gilbert glared at him, rolling his eyes as he buried his head between his arms. "You can't not fight for her!"

"What am I supposed to do then?" Bash leaned a hand on Gilbert's shoulder. "All I know is, if you don't do anything about it, you'll regret it for a very long time. You're not only losing your lover, but a soulmate, your best friend and a confidant." when Gilbert bit his lip, deep in thought, Bash patted him in the back. "Think about it."

And think about it he did.

Amelia walked into the Cuthberts' barn, thinking she could get there earlier to help with the preparations for the Equality Protest the class had agreed to do. She had apologised to Anne and Diana for walking off the other day and they soon agreed to forget and move on. They didn't want to impose in Amelia's decisions. But maybe if they had pushed a bit more, she could've been convinced.

She frowned slightly at the sight in front of her, as Anne tried to blink away tears as she stared at Diana coldly. "Hey, what's going on?" the blonde asked, approaching them with caution, scared she'd set fuel to the fire. Diana shrugged, a confused frown on her face. "I don't know, ask Anne." the blonde turned carefully towards Anne, making the redhead stare at her. "Anne? What's wrong?" she scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest as she stared at Diana. "Amelia, did you know Diana has been playing Jerry for the past few weeks?" Amelia's eyes widened in shock as she turned to Diana, who paled, her lips parting as she gulped. "Is this true?"

"I can explain-" Diana tried to say, tears in her eyes as she stared at the cold face of Anne and the shocked face of Amelia. "Why didn't you tell us? Don't you trust us?" Amelia asked hurt, thinking of all the opportunities Diana had to tell them, but didn't. "You know why she didn't tell us?" Anne glared at Diana, hurt by her actions as Amelia looked back at the redhead. "Jerry came to talk to me about a girl yesterday who had been cruel to him, and you knew the harm you were doing and that's why you didn't tell us." Tears slipped down Diana's cheeks as she took a step closer. "I never meant to hurt him, it was ridiculous."

"And why is that, Diana?" Amelia asked coldly, staring at the floor as she tried to grasp the idea that one of her closest friends had hurt Jerry. The same pain she had been feeling, that feeling that Diana had helped her with, she had been hurting someone else with it. "You know why." Amelia nodded, knowing the reason was because he came from a poor family. "Yes, because Jerry told me you made him feel common." Diana choked back a sob, squeezing her eyes shut. "That's hardly my fault."

"If you knew it was always meant to hurt him, why did you do it anyway?" Amelia questioned her as Diana shrugged, licking her lips as she struggled with an answer that would please the two. "I was hoping I would let him down gently, and that Paris would be excuse enough." as soon as those words slipped out of her mouth, she regretted them immediately as Anne stumbled back. "Is that what you were planning to do with me? With us?" Amelia watched the argument between the two as she felt it got more personal between the two, following Anne as she walked away. "How could you think that?

"What? Were we never good enough for you?" Diana frowned, taking a small step back as her eyes flickered between the two. "I have stood by your side ever since the day I met both of you! Always having to seek approval of the adventurous independent Anne and the hopeless romantic Amelia." Amelia softened her gaze, opening her mouth to speak, but Anne replied first. "You always wanted to get rid of an urchin like me."

"Hey, this as nothing to do with the matter in hand." Amelia stopped Anne, feeling like the argument wasn't actually about Jerry, but Diana leaving and her not opening up to them. Anne scoffed, taking a step back as she shook her head. "No surprise you take her side. Who would want anything to do with an orphan like me?" Anne cried out, pressing her lips. "No one is hurt like you Anne! You win." the redhead shook her head, shrugging at them. "No. The world lets girls like you two win." Amelia finally snapped, not being able to take it anymore. "You know what, Anne? You talk so much about equality, but really, it's just you above every other girl. You must be the saddest but you also must be the happiest."

Anne tried to hold back her tears as she stared at her two friends, saddened and angry by the argument as well. Diana slowly agreed with Amelia, avoiding the redhead's gaze. "What about you? You beg us with your sad puppy eyes to talk about Gilbert but then don't do anything about it."

"You know, you're mad at Diana for not telling you something, yet mad at me for telling you too much. It's so hard being you're friend when you have such high expectations." Amelia choked out a sob before rushing away, wanting to get as far as she could from this horrible nightmare she couldn't seem to awake from. Was that what her friends really thought of her?

And in that moment, all she could think about how alone she was.
