Amelia rolled her eyes amused at the Take Notice board. She didn't find it that interesting anymore. Maybe it was because the one boy she wanted hadn't posted about her. But it was fine. It wasn't like she wasn't going to ignore those feelings until they eventually went away. She wasn't sure about those feelings anyway. She entered the classroom, hearing Gilbert speaking to someone.

"Medical research at The Sorbonne in Paris. Funny, Doctor Ward mentioned antitoxins last month." Amelia leaned against the doorway, staring at the black haired boy with a soft smile on her face. "Mr Know It All, care to explain what an antitoxin is?" Gilbert turned around, grinning once he saw who it was. "It's a new kind of preventative medicine. Seems to actually be working, by the looks of it, even if Doctor Ward called it nonsense."

"Most people have it hard trusting new ideas." Miss Stacy added, tilting her head as Gilbert put the newspaper down on his lap. "Isn't Sorbonne a really good science and medicine university?" Amelia asked, crossing her arms over her chest. Gilbert sighed, nodding as he scratched his chin. "And million dollars and miles away." Amelia leaned a hand on his shoulder, making the boy stare up at her. "Anything is possible if you work hard enough for it."

Gilbert put a hand over hers, making her heart skip a beat. "I know a doctor called Emily Oak who's doing similar work in the University of Toronto. You shoulder write to her, Gilbert. She could guide you towards Canadian Universities specializing in medical research."

Gilbert looked at Miss Stacy, nodding, appreciating the thought. "Thank you. I'll take you up on that." he stood up and approached Amelia, just standing close to her. "What about you, Amelia? Any thoughts about where you're going to study?" she bit her lip, suddenly realising how her and Gilbert where heading towards different places. "Probably Queens. They have a Fine Arts degree."

"Aren't you going back to Scotland? Maybe just to visit before entering university?" Miss Stacy asked, as Amelia frowned, humming. She hadn't really thought about that, but maybe that would be a good idea, to visit the soil she had been born in. Gilbert crossed his arms, looking down at her with a smile on his face. "If I could too, I would love to visit the land of the Scottish, Amy."

The blonde looked up at him, tilting her head as she smiled, nodding. "Of course, I would love that." she paused, clearing her throat as Miss Stacy raised an eyebrow at the couple, smiling. "I would have to ask my father, but I don't think he'll mind." Suddenly, Diana walked in, smiling coyly at the couple as she grabbed Amelia's wrist. "Just need to borrow her for a second Gilbert."

All the girls were gathered around the last table in the class, whispering excitedly as Amelia and Diana made their way towards them. "Who are you going to dance with, Amelia?" Josie asked the fellow blonde, who had her books pressed against her chest as she frowned, not knowing what she was talking about. "Dance? What do you mean?"

"Miss Stacy scheduled practice for the county-fair barn dance." Ruby whispered, a look of glee on her face as Tillie's face peered through Ruby and Josie's shoulders. "Girls and boys." she said, empathasing on the word 'and'. Amelia raised an eyebrow amused, rolling her eyes. "That means...touching." Ruby added nervously, nearly breaking into a nervous sweat. "I'm not the best dancer, so I don't know if anyone will want to dance with me." Amelia laughed, as the girls sat down in the benches.

Jane scoffed, as she raised both eyebrows. "I'm sure Gilbert will be falling on his own feet trying to be your partner." she nudged Amelia who was sat next to her, who blushed softly and hid her face behind her chalkboard as the girls laughed. And Amelia dreaded but also looked forward towards this practice everyone was talking about.

Amelia stood in a line of the students who were participating in their last year at school, in between Jane and Anne as she listened to Miss Stacy, who stood with Mrs and Mr Lynde. All the tables and chairs were pushed to the very back, and the small room seemed much bigger than it actually was. "As promised, today we will be practicing for the county-fair barn dance. Mr and Mrs Lynde have kindly consented to help us in this endeavour." the teacher announced to her pupils, as Rachel looked around gleeful, loving the chance to show off her dance skills.

The door opened, revealing two men and a woman, as Miss Stacy seemed to recognise one of them. Since the Dashing White Sergeant needs a set of six, I thought we'd better do so." Rachel explained as Miss Stacy sighed tiredly. "You remember my son." a small shy looking man approached Miss Stacy, taking of his hat. "It's very nice to see you again."

Miss Stacy dodged his gaze, pressing her lips awkwardly. "Thank you...all for coming. Shall we?" the six adults got into position as the students looked curiously. "Pay close attention to the patterns! And please clap out the rhythm." Rachel stared clapping it out as everyone else followed suit, and the six started spinning as they held hands.

They soon finished, declaring that was only the basic pattern. "Why don't you give it a try? Sets of six please, boy-girl, boy-girl, and so on!" Amelia's face fell, widening her eyes as she looked around. She wasn't to keen on dancing, she was, quite frankly, very uncoordinated and she couldn't remember any of the dance steps they had just demostrated. She saw Ruby walk off quickly towards the porch, sitting down. Amelia realised this and nudged Diana, who asked Miss Stacy for a break.

The girls stood around Ruby, who looked near tears and paler than usual. "What's the matter Ruby?" Amelia asked, noticing how the girl's leg bounced up and down nervously. "You can tell us." added Josie, as Ruby hesitated. "I...what if I'm pregnant?" Amelia widened her eyes, as the girls looked at each other, not knowing how to react.

"My mother said if I so much go near a boy, I might get pregnant, and if a boy so much as touches me, I will certainly get pregnant. So I must be!" she exclaimed horrified, as Amelia frowned, not seeing the logic there. The girls looked worriedly at their hands, mortified of what could've happened. "Hey," Amelia tried to talk to the girls, but none of them listened as they blabbed on. Josie realised Miss Stacy was behind and pointed an accusing finger. "How could you let this happen?"

"Now girls, I can assure no one will get pregnant from dancing." Miss Stacy looked at the girls confused faces, and sighed, avoiding their gaze. "There are many steps to, umm...conceiving. First, courtship. Then marriage." she stuttered out uncomfortably, not wanting to explain any further. "And them comes a baby in a golden carriage." Amelia joked, finishing the lullaby as the girls laughed, sort of relieved that they weren't pregnant.

They all got into position, minus Ruby, who was too afraid to go back dancing, and Moody, who still hadn't fully recovered from his injury, but was able to play his banjo from where he was sitting. Amelia stood between John and Charlie, as she looked ahead to see Gilbert grinning in front of her and blushed, realising he was to be her dancing partner. Anne was Charlie's, much to her annoyance, and Jane was John's. "I'm sorry you'll have to dance with my uncoordinated legs."

Gilbert laughed at Amelia's statement, shaking his head. "No worries, I'm a pretty neat dancer if I say so myself." The music started to play as Rachel shouted out instructions, and Amelia found her eyes stuck on Gilbert, staring at him with a smile, as he did the same. As they danced in set of threes, Gilbert broke the set and grabbed Amelia's hand, twirling her around as she giggled, holding his hand as they stared at each other.

Sure, they had held hands before. But somehow, this time it felt completely different. As if it were only them two. Even in a crowded room, they only had eyes for each other. It seemed as the world was moving slower, and Amelia wished it, so they could have an excuse to hold onto each other, without having to give any explanations to anyone or themselves. But everything inevitably came to an end, as the banjo music softly faded.

Gilbert bowed at her as Amelia curtsied, and as everyone else moved along, the chatter seemed to be in the background, they both stood facing each other, breathless, with no words to say. And they both came to a sudden realisation.

She liked him. Maybe even more than that. She was falling for him fast, and as the seconds, minutes, hours and days passed, she only fell harder. And in that moment of peacefulness, in which her mind had been clear of any other thought or worry, she knew right there and then, there was no going back. This was the moment.

And as for him, he stumbled upon a realisation to. That no matter how much he tried to move on, and pretended he was, he realised then that he would always be in love with Amelia Covey. No matter how he tried to find someone similar to her. There was no one else that brought him that much joy and make him feel so much love as his best friend did. And that was something he did not want if it was unrequited.

"Not to shabby as I thought you would be, Amy." Gilbert poked fun at her as she smiled softly, admiring the small freckles on his skin that you would only really notice in the sun, or his warm caramel eyes that had golden speckles near the pupil, or a small black curl that fell on his face as he licked his chapped pink lips. "Gilbert, I...I like-"

Amelia was interrupted as Moody called Gilbert from where he was sat, pointing his leg as if he wanted to ask the medical expertise about the recovery. Gilbert signaled he would be there in a few seconds before he turned to the blonde, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he took a step towards her. "You were saying?" she hesitated, before frowning. "It was nothing." she avoided his gaze, knowing that if she looked into those damned brown eyes, she would cave. "See you tomorrow." she hurried away, feeling his gaze on her back as she picked up her things and left the small building, flustered of all the feelings she was having inside.

Gilbert looked down, the tiniest bit disappointed, because for a second he thought that maybe, just maybe, she was about to say she felt the same way.

But some things were just not meant to be.
