When we're underneath the lights

My heart's no longer broken

For a moment

Just for a moment

A moment in love

(Guys go listen to this song, it's called Just For A Moment, by Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett, it TOTALLY describes Amelia and Gilbert to perfection.)

As soon as Amelia placed her gaze upon Gilbert's face, she knew that something was wrong. She knew him well enough to recognise that look on his face. The last time she had seen that kind of look on his face was when his father had passed away. And she was correct. And god was she shocked. She couldn't believe out of all the people in the world, Mary was the one with a ticking clock over her head.

She walked alongside him, on their way to his house. Once Amelia had heard about the news, she assured her father she would spend the next few days with them to help around. She was sure that neither Mary, Bash or Gilbert would be in the mood to.

"I don't think I could be a doctor." Gilbert broke the silence, being able to confide in her in this moment of grief. She turned to him in disbelief, as they both continued walking. "Doctors are supposed to...I was...I had to tell her-" Amelia leaned a hand on his shoulder, making him clench his jaw.

"Don't." Amelia flinched at his words, feeling the pain herself. "I'm not the one dying. I'm not the one losing everything." Amelia walked up to catch up to him, understanding his point of view but having a different one herself. "But you're losing her. And that's equally as painful, even if they are different types of pain."

"But she needed for me to be strong. I was selfish and let my feelings get the best of me." Amelia frowned, and got hold of his wrist, stopping him in his tracks. They stood alone in the field of dry grass, a soft breeze blowing as Amelia stared into his honey brown eyes, her belief in him never faltering for one second. "I know this is the last thing you want to hear, but death is inevitable."

"And in such a cold moment, a moment of grief and loss, someone who cares is what anyone needs. Someone like you." Amelia locked their hands together as Gilbert stared at her with something in his eyes that she couldn't quite describe. "You'll be a wonderful doctor. I always had and always will have faith in you."

A few seconds passed as they just stared at each other, and for the slightest tiniest moment, their hearts felt no long broken, as if the missing pieces were filled in by the others.

Amelia broke their gaze, a sudden heat rising up her neck as Gilbert walked by her, neither of them letting go of their hands intertwined together.

Amelia brought in a tray of some lemon tea in Mary's room, smiling softly at the sight of the young mother cuddling the young child, as she struggled to maintain her strong facade. The blonde noticed Mary's tired eyes, even if she smiled and muttered a thanks. Amelia took the seat in front of her, softly taking her lace gloves off, and softly pinching one of Delphine's chubby cheeks.

"We don't have to talk about it, but you lost a mother too, right?" a small knot formed in Amelia's throat as she gulped, nodding. "And yet, you're so positive and joyful and kind." Amelia shook her head, blinking back the tears. "You're too kind." she chuckled, biting her lip as she thought of how to address the matter and give Mary her best advice.

"Her death was...unexpected. A sudden fire swept everything I cared about dearly. I think the suddenness of her loss was what affected the most. I felt so numb." Mary nodded, putting in all of her attention, noticing how Amelia's hands slightly trembled as she tried to press them down.

"The thing I regret the most is not telling her how much she means to me. Just before the incident we had this enormous fight and I said some nasty things I never meant. And she'll never know. And I wish I could tell her. Tell her I love her." a tear rolled down her pale skin as she wiped it off almost immediately. "Delphine's too young for her to understand that she is loved."

Amelia grabbed Mary's hand in hers, squeezing it slightly in reassurance. "Tell her. Write her something and tell her everything, about you and how you feel." she paused, slowly letting go as she gulped. "It's what I wish I could've done."

She soon excused herself from the room, a heavy weight of grief pressing her chest down as she felt she couldn't breathe. She pressed her back against the wall as she stood in the hallway. She pressed a hand against her mouth as she chocked back some sobs, and slid her back as she ended on the floor.

She heard footsteps and she suddenly felt a warm body wrapping their arms around her, stroking the back of her head as he muttered sweet nothings to calm her down. She recognised the scent to be Gilbert's, as she buried her face in his shoulder.

The sudden feelings she had tried to bury deep down had resurfaced and the grief of losing another important mother-like figure to her hurt her more than she cared to admit. She was supposed to be the joyful one. She was supposed to be the one to put a smile on other people's face in moments of deep sadness.

She felt her body tremble as she found herself staring at Gilbert again, as he softly stroked her face, taking locks of her blonde hair off her face and behind her ear. It hurt him to see her this way, feeling somewhat responsible, even if he knew that didn't make much sense overall. He was Amelia's confidant. He was responsible for her as she was for him.

They spent a long while just pressed to each other as their company soothed their feelings.

It was the day of Mary's Easter party, and Amelia was dressed in just a simple baby pink dress, her hands covered with some speckles of paint, and her cheek had a streak of blue paint, something she hadn't realised yet. She had made a painting of Mary, Bash and Delphine, sat in their garden outside of the Blythe/Lacroix home.

She arrived at their home, slowly walking as she tried to push out of her mind the whole losing Mary, wanting to enjoy maybe one of their last days together. Gilbert was sat at the stairs leading to their front porch, as he looked up to see the blonde walking towards him, a small smile breaking onto his face. He stood up as they both stood, faced towards each other in a comfortable silence.

Amelia searched in her bag as he handed the painting to Gilbert so he could hand it to Mary, a shy look on her face. Gilbert looked at the painting, a look of awe and adoration as he looked at Amelia as she shied away from his intense stare. "Beautiful." he muttered, Amelia not knowing he was also talking her.

"You've got some paint." he chuckled, pointing at Amelia's cheek as she laughed and tried to wipe it off, completely missing it. "Did I get it?" Gilbert shook his head, laugh bubbling out of his chest as he licked his finger and held her face as he wiped it off. He let his hand linger there for a moment as they both stood in close proximity, and for a second, her eyes flickered towards his lips.

"Blythe! Where the hell are you?" a shout came from inside the house as both teenagers broke away, a certain blush on both of their faces. "I'll wait in the back with the rest." she muttered as she walked away, feeling his gaze follow her before she turned the corner and disappeared from his sight.

Gilbert entered Mary's room, as he and Bash prepared to show her the big surprise party, also wanting to hand in Amelia's gift. Mary exhaled deeply, admiring the painting as tears burned at the back of her eyes. "It's stunning." she whispered, her fingers slightly tracing her family.

Bash picked up Mary and they made their way towards the Barry's house, as they all circled around Mary to wish her a Happy Easter. Gilbert's gaze stopped on Amelia, who spoke to her father as she finished hanging up some butterflies made out of paper. They all handed little gifts to Mary, who appreciated them all, thanking Amelia for her painting, as her father stroke her back proudful.

Soon, hours had passed in fun and chatter, as they all gathered around to sing a special song. "When peace like a river attendeth my way." Anne started singing, pacing alongside Diana and Amelia. "When sorrows like sea billows roll." they both sang along as Mary sighed, her eyes watering a bit as she stared at the people who had become like her second family.

"Whatever my lot thou has taught me to know, it is well, it is well with my soul." they all sang together, hand in hand. "I don't know how to thank you all." Mary's voice broke as she laughed, looking around at everybody's faces. "I'll just read my favourite prayer, if that's alright." Amelia nodded, handing Gilbert the bible who have it to Bash and Mary. Mary started to read the prayer before she tried to choke down a sob, and Marilla stepped in, knowing the prayer as she continued it. Everybody joined in once again as they all partnered up and read from their own bibles. Amelia felt her own father and Gilbert read over her shoulder, as she read softly the emotional words that Mary so loved.

"To be loved as we love. For it is a giving that we receive. It is in pardoning to be pardoned. And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life." Mary looked up at the sky, feeling the sun's warmth inviting her in, as she started to drift away at the distant sound of her loved ones voices.
