Can there be a day beyond this night?

I don't know anymore what is true

I can't find my direction, I'm all alone

The only star that guided me was you

Amelia cooed at the baby she held in her arms, rocking it softly as she sang a sweet lullaby under her breath, watching as the young infant slowly closed her eyelids, drifting off to a deep sleep. Delphine had a soft spot in Amelia's heart, and whenever she could she would head to the Blythe's house to babysit, and let Bash and Mary have some alone time, as her and Gilbert would catch up, and have some alone time themselves.

She smiled softly at the only Blythe when he handed her a cup of coffee, the strong smell luring Amelia in as she sipped the hot drink, putting Delphine down in her cot, the baby not waking from her sleep as she gripped on the blanket. Amelia slumped over the chair, fairly tired, seeing as the night before she had helped the other girls plan Anne's surprise birthday party and they did an all-nighter. Gilbert took a seat in front of her, glancing at the pages of the daily Avonlea newspaper. "Any interesting news?" asked Amelia, starting conversation.

"Nothing, really. Just things about crops, and whatever is in fashion." he shrugged, not really taking interest in those kind of things. He peered over the paper, catching Amelia staring and grinning at her as she returned the gesture, taking another sip at the hot drink, hissing when she burnt her tongue. He folded the newspaper once he was done with it, flicking over the letters Bash had picked up for him this morning, not seeing anything of interest or importance. "Any plans today?" he asked curiously, in his head repeating what he planned to ask her.

"Yeah, it's Anne's birthday party today, the one I was working last night." Amelia looked up at him when he didn't answer, not catching the look of disappointment. "I thought I told you?" Gilbert nodded, muttering. "Yeah, just forgot." Amelia nodded, frowning at the strange behaviour from her best friend. "You okay?"

Gilbert's head snapped up, not expecting the question. "Y-yeah." he paused, stuttering over his own mouth. "Why wouldn't I be?" Amelia shrugged, taking a look at the clock on the wall behind her and standing up abruptly, nearly knocking over her mug of coffee as Gilbert steadied the table. "Oh I'm going to be late!" Amelia hurried over and grabbed her coat and put it on, putting the mug in the sink as Gilbert followed her with his gaze amused. "I'll see you later, okay?" she leaned over and pressed her lips on his cheek, not awaiting his answer before she was out of the door.

A warm smile appeared on his face as his cheeks turned a soft pink, lifting up his hand and tracing with his fingers the spot she had kissed him on, before standing up and doing a little victory dance, not seeing or hearing Bash walk in. He stared at Gilbert amused, clearing his throat and chuckling when the young man looked up startled, an embarrassed look on his face once noticing he had been caught. "Did a certain blonde get you all happy?" Bash poked fun at Gilbert, his thick accent pulling through.

Gilbert shook his head and grinned, as he made his way out of the kitchen. "You'll admit it one day!"

Amelia pressed her face against the big windows, seeing two figures walking up the path, one she recognised her vibrant red hair and the other accompanying was Diana. She stood up quickly, shushing the other girl's chatter as she pressed a finger to her lips. "They're coming!" they all startled away from the windows so not to be seen and ruin the surprise and got into position, standing around the room, admiring the decorations and food that they had made themselves. The door creaked open and soon Amelia saw her two friends, waving her hands up in the air. "Surprise!" they all exclaimed in unison, laughing at Anne's surprised and delighted face, watching a smile break into it.

Anne stood speechless, looking around at the girls as Diana slipped her jacket off smoothly, putting it away. Amelia soon made her way over and grabbed Anne by the hands, dragging her into the room. "Happy birthday!" Anne let out a breath, admiring the food. "You did all this?" she asked in disbelief, not believing what good friends she had. "We pulled an all-nighter for you." Amelia added, and soon everyone sat around the table, giggling and gossiping like true ladies.

Amelia grabbed a strawberry and popped it into her mouth, enjoying the sweet juice as it tinted her lips red. "...and then Jerry yelled, 'her parents are dead'." Anne finished telling the story as the tried to imitate the farm boy, as Amelia snickered, covering her mouth. "He nearly ruined the whole thing." Diana added, as Tillie rolled her eyes. "What is the matter with boys?" she moaned, grabbing another biscuit.

"Some of us prefer men." Josie said, making a sultry look that made Amelia chuckle, rolling her eyes. "Some of us, and by us I mean Tillie have a two boy problem." Tillie blushed, pressing her lips as the girls squealed, watching Tillie shrug. "It's not a problem." the girls oohed, looking between it each other. "And then there's Amelia who's blind to the boy who's madly in love with her." Amelia choked on her tea as the girls laughed again, wiggling their eyebrows at her.

She put the cup down, shaking her head. "He's not in love with me." all the girls scoffed as soon as it was said, Amelia raising her eyebrows at everyone's reactions. Minnie May started to spin around, singing happy birthday before she pretended to faint, and the subject was left alone. Anne turned her chair, speaking in one of her imaginative voices. "Princess Minnie May has grown weak. More cake and biscuits before she dies." she said, picking up one and knelt down beside the younger girl.

"Let us attend to our fair maiden!" the girls followed suit, each one picking out a different type of biscuit, all offering and begging Minnie May to choose theirs. Amelia pleaded, doing some puppy eyes while offering a shortbread biscuit, softly pouting when Minnie May rejected it, choosing Anne's, softly nibbling at it.

Amelia wrapped her warm coat around her body, as Anne finished telling her about how she wanted to find out about her biological family, thinking there might be answers in Charlottetown, and that way she could visit Cole and Isaac. "I'm still waiting for Marilla to give me her permission, but you know I won't go down without a fight." Anne said stubbornly, making Amelia chuckle, kicking a small pebble to the side.

Amelia and Anne didn't live next to each other, but close enough that they walked most of the way together. They didn't do it often because Amelia was often busy, whether spending time with Gilbert, babysitting Delphine or just doing errands for her father, but seeing as it was Anne's birthday, Amelia thought it would be nice to catch up with the growing red-head.

"You know, I could go with you." Amelia offered with a small smile, one that very few could resist. Anne shook her head, looking at the blonde. "There's no need, it's quite far if you don't want to." Amelia scoffed, wrapping her arm around Anne's. "Nonsense. Besides, I haven't visited Isaac in a while and they also sell some really good paints in Charlottetown." Anne laughed, looking at Amelia gratefully. "Thank you."

"Anything for a friend." Amelia sighed, looking down the path, admiring the colours of the sunset and the view. She smirked, bumping her hip against Anne and wiggling her eyebrows. "So...." she prolonged the 'so', as Anne looked at her amused. "How are you and Isaac doing? He won't share anything with me anymore." she pouted, as Anne turned a soft pink, sharing a cheery laugh. Amelia knew for a fact they wrote to each other quite often, sharing lengthy letters of their daily issues and probably more romantical things.

"We're doing good." she said bashfully, ignoring Amelia's content look, as Anne sighed wistfully, wishing Isaac was next to her. The more time she spent with the both Covey siblings, she realised their little similarities they didn't realise they had. They both had a dimple on their left side, and when they were nervous they would rub their necks, and bit their little finger whenever they were concentrated.

"Are you ever...I don't know, scared?" Amelia asked, their laughter fading with the sun, as night took over and the moon started to shine through. Anne turned to look at Amelia, her brow furrowing. "What do you mean?" Anne asked with doubt, as Amelia opened her mouth, and then closing it, shaking her head as she changed her mind. "Never mind, forget I said anything." Amelia continued walking, as Anne grabbed her wrist, halting her in her tracks. "Amelia, is there anything wrong?"

Both girls stood in the middle of the path, just staring at each other, trying to figure out the other, trying to learn what was going on through their minds, wondering. It took a few seconds before Amelia buckled in. "About the future." Anne nodded at Amelia, wanting her to proceed. She sighed, avoiding her gaze. "Not knowing what could happen, and scared of not figuring myself out and making the right decision, scared of making that decision too late." Anne saw different emotions written in Amelia's frown as she stared into space, as they both started to walk again.

"Is..." Anne paused, doubt flickering on her face. "...is there anything in specific, any decision you're scared to make?" something Anne didn't recognise fast enough flickered in Amelia's face, disapearing as fast as it appeared. A few seconds passed before an answer came, but it came eventually.

"N-no...just speaking in general." and somehow Anne didn't quite believe that.
