"treasure, that's what I am."

couldn't help thinking about Amelia Covey while he was chopping wood. He had met her not that long ago, and she was all he could think of. How she smelt like lavender. How she smiled. How she had ignored him since he had given her that red apple.

Since then, he had been leaving her a green apple on her desk each day. She knew it was from Gilbert, but that didn't make her talk to him. Not that Gilbert ever gave up. He continued to do so each day. He was quite stubborn and persistent. Apart from the fact that he actually had interest on this girl, he just wanted to know why they couldn't speak like any other two human beings.

He frowned, brought his axe down and chopped the block of wood.

And the worse thing was that Gilbert could feel her presence, just a few steps away from him, picking up the blocks to take them in to the school. She was humming a soft and sweet melody under her breath, but Gilbert could hear it perfectly. He put his axe down and scratched the back of his head. "You know, I'd quite enjoy it if you sang louder." she turned to look at him. "You sing quite nice. uhm, hum. Same thing." he stumbled on his words and she smirked.

"Bet you couldn't do the same. boys aren't known for singing quite... uhm good." Amelia said, which left him stumped. She hadn't spoken to him in days. Before he could answer, Diana approached them slowly. "You shouldn't be flirting with her, Gilbert!" she teased, to which he grumbled and continued chopping wood.

"So, Amelia, I though we could visit Anne, to see how's she's doing." said Diana. "You know, after the whole incident." What had happened was that Billy had teased her in class and called her carrots. After whacking him on the head with her slate, Mr Phillips had shouted at Anne, and she ran away. She hadn't been back at school since.

Amelia nodded. She felt compassion for her new found friend. Her friendship with her wasn't as strong as Diana and Anne's, but she still missed her greatly.

So after school, both girls, accompanied by Ruby, made their way through the woods and towards green gables.

It was a very pleasant location. With its green fields, and the barn, it was beautiful. Or so Amelia though. She had a fairly nice house, for her father was quite rich, but she wished she lived there. All the horses and the hens were just amazing in her eyes.

When they arrived, a boy their age was walking towards them. He fixed his hat and smiled towards the trio. "Hello, ladies." Diana was the only one that answered, saying a simple hello. Even so, Amelia smirked at Diana, who rolled her eyes. "Don't look at me like that." and Amelia laughed.

"Good afternoon miss cuthbert." greeted Diana, when she knocked on the door and the lady answered. "Good afternoon Diana."

"This is miss Amelia Covey and miss Ruby Gillis." presented Diana. Amelia though that miss cuthbert had a friendly but stern face. She liked her inmediately. "What brings all three of you by?"

"We though Anne might like to have her books and everything." Diana handed over the basket. "Nice to meet you. Come on, Diana." said Ruby shyly, trying to hurry away. "We've been worrying about her." added Amelia. "Isn't that right, Ruby?" Ruby paused and stammered, before answering. "Diana and Amelia especially." she said meekly. Miss Cuthbert looked at them confused. "Did something happen?"

"Anne's suffering, isn't she? I just know it. Anne is too sensitive for this world." Amelia let Diana do the talking, seeing as they were better friends, but added "That's what she told us, anyway."

"Is she truly never coming back to school?" this confused miss cuthbert even more, and Amelia could see it written on her face. "It's been days and days. I never imagined she wouldn't come back."

"Neither did I." added miss cuthbert. "May we say hello to her?" miss cuthbert looked at the trio nervously. "Anne... is running an errand at present, but I'll be sure to tell her you were here."

"Please do, miss cuthbert. Please tell Anne we miss her very much." said Amelia. "You can count on it."

And with that the three girls continued on their way. They reached the gate before any of them said anything."You know, I find it very suspicious that Anne went to do an errand when she is suffering like that." Amelia said, and Diana stopped to face her. "Yes... Me too. Anne is the type of person to stay in her room and not come out until she feels like it." Ruby didn't say anything, as she felt it wasn't her place to say so.

"Maybe she's feeling better, and will come back to school soon."

"Oh, I sure hope she does."

Amelia visited Green gables by herself that afternoon. Anne explained to her that she had pretended to go to school, to which Amelia laughed and tried to scorn her. "You should have come. me and Diana would have protected you."

She then proceeded to meet Jerry. He was the boy she had seen this morning. He had a cute French accent, Amelia quickly found out. All three of them were in the loft, as Jerry continued to do his work.

"You're so lucky to be a boy, Jerry. Boys can do anything they want." Anne said, interrupting the silence. "And boys have every opportunity."

"You can go to school if you want." Amelia agreed with Jerry. "Wait, does that mean school's out of the question for you?" asked Amelia curiously. "Where do you think I'd rather be?"

"I hadn't really though about it." Anne contemplated. "I wish you did go to school. We need more nice boys." joked Amelia, and all three of them laughed.

"I don't see how I'm ever gonna be a good wife." Anne changed the subject. "Probably not." said Jerry. "I have such a bad temper."

"True."

"And I'm wicked. And impatient and skinny and homely. Don't say anything Jerry." Amelia sat up. "And do you think I'd be a good wife?" Anne scoffed. "But you're beautiful Amelia!" she explained."But I'm shy, and I can't speak up for myself. I literally let everyone step on top of me, like if I was a rug on the front porch. I don't like wearing dresses, and I want to go to college." said Amelia fastly. Anne contampleted, but didn't say anything.

"What would you like to be when you grow older? "Anne asked both of them. " I could be a smithy, I suppose."

"But what do you want Jerry? You could be anything!"she turned towards Amelia."What about you, Amelia? You could be a published author, or a cartographer." Amelia though of lying, but at the end answered truthfully. "I want to be a painter." she admitted shyly. "You paint?!" exclaimed Anne and Jerry at the same time. She nodded meekly.

"That's amazing." Anne sighed. "I wish I was good at something like you Amelia. You're so intelligent. And you're top at class with Gilbert, of course. You truly are a wonder." Amelia laughed, but zoned out at the mention of Gilbert's name.

Why did everytime someone mentioned his name, did she feel this feeling?

What was happening to her?
