《SLOW BURN》22. promise me

Josh runs his hands through my hair, making the shampoo turn into lather. I close my eyes and laugh. "Ow, it's getting in my eyes."

"Sorry, baby," He says as he begins to rinse it with the water running down.

I open my eyes and squint for a moment until they don't burn anymore. "What did you call me?" I ask moving to the side so that I can look at him.

He grins, showing his straight white teeth. He kisses me, the water keeps running down our bodies. "Baby," He says against my lips. "Or are we too old for that?"

I laugh at his expression. "I don't think so."

We probably are but I like the way the word sounds coming from him, especially when it's directed at me.

He smiles. "Good."

I reach for the shampoo and put some on my palm. "Your turn," I say reaching up to wash his hair. He kisses my neck as I rinse it. "Josh." I warn.

"I can't get enough of you." He tells me looking down at me.

"All night wasn't enough?" I tease knowing very damn well that it wasn't enough.

"No," he says, his hands running down my waist. "At what time was your sister going to come?"

I smile. "At around nine, I think."

He turns me around, his hands gripping my hips. He kisses the back of my shoulder. "We got enough time, don't you think?"

"Yes," I say already breathless.

Ten minutes later, we finally get out of the shower. I wrap the towel around my body and go get my bag while Josh changes in the restroom. I put on a bra and panties then comb my hair and look through the bag for some clothes.

Josh comes out of the bathroom and leans against the doorway. I reach for a jean skirt I had packed and put it on slowly, knowing Josh is watching. I finally smile and turn to look at him. "What?"

"Just admiring you," He says with a shrug making me blush.

I smile then continue to look for my blouse. Josh walks to me and he puts his arms around me from behind, resting his clasped hands just below my stomach. He kisses the back of my head and I lean against his strong chest. I want to stay like this forever. Just me and him in this room. Alone.

"I wish I could keep you in here with me all day." He murmurs.

I smile because it feels like he was reading my mind. He extends his palm on my stomach, his heat radiates against my skin. I'm a bit sore but my body still aches for him. He presses his lips against the crook of my neck and kisses me there, using his tongue. It makes my knees feel weak.

"Are you going back tonight?" He asks.

I open my eyes and try to concentrate to answer his question. "Probably earlier in the afternoon."

"Would you come to my apartment when you get back?"

I laugh. "Are you trying to tear me apart?"

He chuckles against my neck. "I'll be gentle." He whispers.

I bite my lip. "You better be."

He continues to kiss my neck that's when my stomach growls, making him laugh. "We should eat something," he says but doesn't stop kissing me.

I turn around and kiss him on the lips. I can taste the toothpaste on him. We're in the middle of making out when there is a knock on the door.

"Natalie? You really need to come out here, pronto," Savannah says on the other side.

I groan but pull away from Josh then reach for my blouse and put it on before walking to the door.

"Sorry to interrupt," Savannah says glancing at Josh then she looks at me. "Brad is outside, Nat."

"What?" I gasp. "What the hell is he doing here?"

"I don't know but he looks angry."

"I'll deal with him," Josh says standing next to me.

"No, you're not." I whisper, facing him. "You can't let him see you, Josh. Please. The last thing I need is you two getting in a fight."

Josh clenches his jaw. "Natalie-"

"Promise me." I interrupt. "Don't come out."

He sighs obviously frustrated with my request but nods once.

"You can wait in my room," Savannah says quietly. "You should go before he comes." She tells me.

I sigh then walk out down the hall. He's waiting in the waiting area. It's so weird to see him when I can still feel the sensations of Josh's lips. I clear my throat and cross my arms on my chest. "Brad. What on earth are you doing here?"

He looks up at me and I watch his eyes scan my body. I'm not sure what he's looking for. "Is it true?" He asks angrily walking up to me. "Are you with somebody else already?"

"What are you talking about?" I ask trying to stay calm but my heart begins to beat hard against my chest. He can't possibly know right? No. How?

"A friend of mine called me last night. Tanner? He said he had seen you on the beach with someone yesterday."

Tanner. It takes me a moment to remember who he is. Oh right. He was the guy that hit me with the football yesterday. He did seem to recognize me from somewhere. If I would have paid more attention to his face, I would have recognized him as one of Brad's friends. Shit. Did he see Josh? Even if he did, he wouldn't know he is Brad's brother because he's never met him. Brad met Tanner a few years after high school. They don't really hang out anymore, at least that's what I thought. I hadn't seen him in years. I had forgotten about him.

Okay. I can deal with Brad knowing I was with someone. As long as he doesn't know who that someone is.

I roll my eyes. "Wow, you guys are worse than us girls."

Brad narrows his eyes at me and grabs my arm tightly. "So it's true then."

I yank my arm from his grasp. "So what if it is? I'm a single adult. I can see whoever I want."

Brad looks at me. "Who is he?" He looks down the hall. "Is he here?"

Before I know it, he's walking past me down the hall.

"Brad, wait!" I call after him but he's already going into my room.

I scan it quickly at the same time he does. I don't see any of Josh's things, thank God. Just a bed with messy sheets. The aftermath of my night with Josh.

Brad's hands turn into fists and for the first time, I fear that he's going to hurt me. He turns to glare at me. "I can't believe this."

"Can't believe what? You've been fucking girls from the moment we broke up."

He shakes his head. "You're mine."

"No, I'm not." I say, angrily. "We broke up months ago, Brad. You have no right to come all the way down here to accuse me of what? Moving on?"

He frowns and he suddenly looks sad. "Natalie, please. I love you."

I shake my head. "You have to find a way to get over me and move on, Brad. I can't help you anymore. I don't know how to tell you that there is no future between you and me."

He takes a step forward. "Please-"

"Please leave." I interrupt feeling overwhelmed with this whole situation. The fact that he drove two hours to get here and demand me something that he has no right to. What the hell is he thinking? I'm beginning to think that he's not okay at all.

He sighs but makes his way out of my room and down the hall. I follow him just to make sure he does leave. "I'm sorry," he says looking at me before he walks out the door.

I let out a breath of relief. I really hope he doesn't notice Josh's truck parked out in the parking lot. I just can't believe him. He needs to move on. I hope that seeing that I spent the night with someone helps him understand that I've moved on from him. I hate to think this but I hope he's hurt enough to hate me and not want me anymore. I really need him to hate me if that's what it takes for him to stop looking for me. Especially after last night.

After a few minutes, I hear a door open and I see Josh walk out of Savannah's room. I look at him and bite my lip. He shakes his head in frustration. "He's really draining my patience."

I sigh. "Just let me handle this, okay? Brad will know something is up if you tell him something."

"So let him."

"What?"

Josh takes a step closer to me. "Maybe it's time he knew."

"No," I say immediately. "No way. Did you not see how he reacted? He's not ready."

"He's a grown adult, Natalie. I'm sure he'll find a way to deal with it."

"Yeah, that's what I'm scared of. I don't want to find out what way he's going to choose to deal with it and you shouldn't either. He's your brother."

His lips form a straight line. I know he's frustrated and maybe even annoyed with me but I need him to understand my concern. Brad is not mentally prepared to find out about Josh and I. Frankly, neither am I. This is already too much. I don't want to have to deal with that drama right now too.

I look up at him and reach for his hand. "Please, Josh. Let's give him more time. Do it for me."

His expression softens. After a moment, he finally sighs. "Okay. For you."

"Thank you," I say reaching up to kiss him.

"Hmm. You got me wrapped around your little finger now. I'm not sure I like it." He murmurs against my lips.

I laugh looking at him. "Do I really?"

"Don't take advantage of it."

"I would never."

He chuckles then presses me closer to him as he kisses me.

"Hey, lovebirds, breakfast is ready if y'all are interested," Savannah calls from the kitchen.

We laugh as we pull apart then make our way to the kitchen. We have breakfast with Savannah. I love how normal she is about this. She doesn't judge me, which I appreciate. Her and Josh talk about some movie that's on theaters and other random things that I don't know about but it's still a good breakfast. Josh and I wash the dishes afterwards for old time's sakes.

"I should probably get going," Josh says after we finish cleaning.

I dry my hands with the cloth and nod. "Okay."

He reaches out for my hand and pulls me to him. I laugh as I look behind him to make sure Savannah is not around. Josh puts his arms around my shoulders and hugs me tightly. "Promise me you'll come tonight?"

I smile. "I work tomorrow."

"So bring some clothes." He puts his fingers under my chin and raises it so my lips could meet his. "Please?"

"Okay," I say against his lips.

He smiles then kisses me one more time before letting me go. "I should go before I take you back to the bedroom."

I look away, blushing. The images from last night are still fresh in my mind. What a pleasurable night. I look forward to repeating it tonight.

I follow Josh out to the door. We kiss again before he leaves. I stand on the porch for a moment with my fingers pressed against my lips. I have a stupid smile on my face. Then it begins to fade as I think about Brad. I still can't believe he actually came here. And that guy Tanner, why couldn't he mind his own business? I'm lucky he doesn't know Josh or I would have been really screwed.

The door opens behind me and Savannah walks out. She smiles at me as she sits down on the swing. "You're not doing Josh, huh?"

I roll my eyes at her then go sit next to her. "I don't want to talk about it. You're my little sister."

"Don't worry, I don't want to hear it." She tells me. "That was a close one with Brad."

I frown. "I know. Second time this week."

"Be careful, Nat. You're playing with fire."

"I want to enjoy it just a little longer," I say staring straight at the ocean.

Savannah is right. I am playing with fire. Josh is my fire and I'm loving the burn. I know it's wrong but it feels so right. I just started to get a taste of him there is no way I'm going to stop. I'm going to stretch this as long as I can until the fire burns out or it explodes.
