《Dear Diary, I Have a Mate》Chapter 1

* 3 Months Earlier

I walked up to my ordinary house. I took a minute to stop and assess it. Just my living hell disguised as an average looking house.

I took a deep breath before walking in. My father lay passed out on the couch. I rolled my eyes and prepared dinner. I set it on the table so that when he woke up it would be there, maybe then he would appreciate me.

Then again I had been making him dinner ever since my mom went to rehab, and he never once said thank you.

"Arrabella?" I heard him ask. (Are-uh-bella)

I turned and looked at him.

"You start school tomorrow," he reminded. I shrugged my shoulders.

He got up and I flinched back out of habit.

"Calm down, I'm not going to waste my energy on you," he sleepily spat.

I nodded and then headed upstairs for the night.

I sighed as I thought about all the strange looks, and same questions I would be getting tomorrow.

I stopped talking when I was eight. That was nine years ago. I just stopped. Who just stops talking, well me, but I have my reasons. I wasn't being heard anyways.

People thought I was weird or deaf. I didn't write, talk, I just occasionally nodded so that they knew I wasn't stupid. I'm not stupid. I'm actually quite smart. I only write in my diary. Otherwise I don't write, talk, or even laugh.

March, 3rd

Dear Diary,

Today is my first day of school, I'm a little nervous. I guess we'll see how it goes.

~Aria

My alarm broke me out sleep. It's six in the morning on my first day at the new school; great.

I pulled on some jeans and a simple pink hooded sweatshirt. I went into the bathroom and washed my face. I brushed my teeth and combed through my hair. My brown hair was straight and simple, besides who was I trying to impress anyways?

I walked on the path that my dad directed me to, and I was off.

I hope I can get through the day without getting noticed.

I walked up to the school and noticed a lot of eyes on me, I hate when people stare at me.

I kept walking and went straight to the office; it was a small school, so I don't think I should get lost.

I opened the door to the office and the lady behind the desk gave me a warm smile.

"Are you Arrabella?" she asked. I nodded and gave her a small smile.

"Well here is your schedule, don't stress about your first day just be yourself and I'm sure you will fit right in," she encouraged.

I nodded and then waved. She waved back and I went on a hunt for my locker.

"No, but I here there's a new girl so you better check her out," I heard someone demand.

"Hey I think that's her, I won't mind checking her out," he replied.

I don't think they knew that I could hear them, I also heard the first boy growl a no.

I put some of my stuff in my locker and then I turned around to head to English; my first class.

I walked in as sat by the window. I was one of the first one's in there so I sat down and started reading.

"Twilight?" an amused voice said from beside me.

I looked up slightly startled.

"I didn't mean to scare you," he chuckled while sitting down next to me. I couldn't take my eyes off of his vibrant light brown ones. He was gorgeous and I just wanted to run my hands through his dark brown silky hair, well at least it looked silky; and soft.

I shoved the thoughts away and then nodded. This boy was a god compared to my boring brown hair and green eyes.

"What's your name?" he asked.

Arrabella I thought. How do I tell him that? I pulled out my schedule from my backpack and pointed to my name.

"Arrabella," he read.

NO! I almost shouted it was not pronounced that way, he made it sound like the word air.

I shook my head and smiled.

"No, how about Bella," he suggested. I shook my head no again while pointing to the Twilight book; I don't want the name of a girl that for some reason picks a dead guy over a werewolf.

"Aria," he tried. I shrugged, anything was better than Bella, and that was the name I used with Diary anyway.

"Where did you go to school before?" he asked.

Why is he so interested? I sighed not knowing how to tell him.

"What? Was it that bad of a school?" he asked.

I smiled and shook my head no.

"So I need to know something, werewolves or vampires?" he asked while pointing to my book.

I rolled my eyes and then opened the book and pointed to Jacob's name.

"Werewolf," he grinned.

I nodded.

"Um, can you, er, talk?" he asked. I froze, I could but that's not technically what he was asking.

I shrugged in response.

"Oh so you can you're just being difficult," he teased.

I shook my head there is no way I can play this game with him, I need to stay away from him.

"You can hear me right?" he asked.

I nodded.

"Just say one word," he pleaded.

I used my hands to make the can't motion.

"You can't?" he guessed.

I nodded.

"Sorry," he quickly apologized.

I shrugged and then faced forward. When the bell rang I shot out of my seat and headed outside. I had a break after that hour.

I sat with my back against a tree while continuing my book.

I heard some people approaching so I looked up.

"Hey Aria," the boy greeted he had some other guys with him.

I stood up and was about to leave.

"No, don't leave," he begged.

I shook my head trying to tell him I wanted to leave.

"You can't," he tried.

I shook my head again.

"Listen just stay," he pleaded. I sighed and then looked behind me, it was stupid, but it was a habit, no one's watching I told myself while sitting back down.

"Were you looking for someone?" he asked.

I shook my head no.

"Well I kind of forgot to tell you in English but I'm Tyson," he smiled. It didn't really matter to me; I was never going to call him it.

"This is Carter, Jason, and Alex," he smiled while pointing to each of the boys that had also sat down with him.

I nodded.

"Arrabella," someone called from my left. I looked over and saw the lady from behind the desk.

I smiled and waved.

"Arrabella is that how you pronounce it?" Tyson asked.

I nodded and rolled my eyes.

"Can you fill this out?" she asked while handing me a clip board.

I took it from her and looked it over.

"You can turn it in at the end of the day," she added.

I nodded and then looked at it again.

I checked the female box, the white, box and the numbers for my birthday; I couldn't fill out the others though. If I did it would be talking in writing form, and I can't, not when people are watching.

I set it aside and sighed.

"You didn't finish it," Tyson stated while pointing to the unanswered questions.

I did the same signal for can't as I did earlier and he nodded.

"Do you want me to help you?" he offered.

I shook my head no.

"I'm going to help you," he grinned while grabbing the clipboard and scooting to sit next to me.

"Do you have any allergies?" he asked.

I nodded.

"Really what?" he questioned.

I pointed to Alex's sandwich.

"Peanut butter," Tyson growled.

"Throw that away and go wash your hands," Tyson demanded. Alex did it without a second thought.

I sighed while shaking my head.

"How bad is it?" he asked.

I shook my hand back and forth to tell him it wasn't too bad, he nodded and then wrote down so-so, I almost laughed, but I held it in.

"What is your full name?" he asked.

I took out my schedule and pointed to it.

"Arrabella J. Middletin," he asked.

I nodded.

"What does the J. stand for?" he asked. I turned red and smiled.

"Is it embarrassing?" he asked. I nodded. My middle name was James! A boy name, but hey what can I say my father wanted a son.

"I'm going to figure it out," he teased.

I shook my head.

"Okay let's see I know you are a senior and let's see what else is there oh, previous school?" he asked.

I got out a penny and pointed.

"Lincoln High?" he asked.

I nodded.

He laughed and then nodded.

"Team work," he added.

He handed it back to me and I put it in my backpack.

I stood up, I mine as well take it to the office now.

"Are you going to take that to the office?" Tyson asked.

I nodded.

"I'll walk with you," he stated.

I shook my head no, but he ignored me and kept walking beside me.

I handed it into the office and then went to my locker.

The warning bell rang and I started to walk towards the English room because I remember that history was near that.

I waved to Tyson and walked in.

I sat in history and barely listened to the teacher.

Tyson is so different. He's just so friendly? I can't even explain it. I wish I could talk to him. Maybe even call him Ty. Yeah, Ty is a cute name.

The bell rang so I stood up and walked over to the science hallway. I walked into the Chemistry room and sat down.

"Hey Aria," Ty beamed.

I nodded and continued to doodle on my notebook.

"What are you drawing?" he asked.

I shrugged. I wasn't drawing anything in fact I was just scribbling.

"So I had an idea," he stated.

I raised my eyebrows in interest.

"Whenever you want to say something you can write it down," he smiled while pulling out a notepad.

I shook my head.

"Can you write?" he asked.

I shrugged.

"Is that a yes?" he asked.

I sighed. He wasn't going to let up so I smiled and then I put the notepad in my backpack.

He seemed content with that so I continued to doodle in my notebook.

I could feel his eyes on me, but I didn't want to get lost in his eyes again, his amazing brown eyes, so I kept my head down.

When the bell rang I sighed, it was lunch time.

I grabbed my bag and headed outside, I had no lunch money.

I sat down and pulled out Twilight.

"Hey Aria," Ty smiled while sitting across from me. I smiled at him but then frowned when I saw him sitting down.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

I sighed, he should be sitting with friends.

I pointed over to where Jason and Carter were sitting.

"Do you want to sit over there with them?" he asked.

I panicked while shaking my head and pointing at him.

"I should, oh I should be sitting over there," he figured out.

I nodded.

"Okay, let's go," he shrugged.

I shook my head and went back to my book.

"Aria," he sighed.

"Arrabella," he demanded.

I looked up and raised my eyebrows at him, what does this kid want from me?

"Either you come with me over there or I stay here with you," he shrugged.

I stared at him like he was crazy.

"Don't give me that look," he chuckled.

I shrugged and then smiled at him, actually smiled.

"Aren't you going to eat?" he asked concerned.

I shook my head.

"Why not?" he questioned.

I sighed, it's hard not being able to talk to him. I want to talk to him to ask him what he thinks he's doing, but if I do that I will have to explain why I act the way I do. It will lead to endless questions that I will be expected to answer and I can't do that. I will remain mute even if it kills me a little every day. Hell it's killed me a little every day since I stopped; since it happened.

"Are you okay?" Ty asked making me snap out of my thoughts.

I nodded. Why isn't he sitting with his friends?

"You don't look okay," he added.

I sighed this is going to be a very long day.

After I stopped responding to Ty he would just tell me stories about him.

I liked his stories.

Once school was over I walked home and up to my room.

Dear Diary,

My first day was, not what I expected. I think I made a friend?

If you could talk Diary I would ask you for advice...but you are just paper. I wonder if Ty thinks I'm stupid? Or maybe he's just making fun of me. I don't know I think I will just stop everything, once he realized I'm not going to respond he will probably ignore me like the others.
