At half past eleven in the evening, Harry was playing games on his phone, trying to kill time and waiting for Niall to text him. He didn’t need to cover his phone up by his sheets to prevent the light for waking up his roommates, because they weren’t even there in the first place. Louis and Liam hadn’t bothered to show their faces once, disappearing completely without any trace to find them.

This was perfect timing. Just when Harry had started to believe that he’d imagined the odd behaviour of his roommates, Louis in particular, the two of them decided to vanish, leaving Harry in an empty room without any clue as of why they weren’t there too.

He sighed while cutting another virtual banana in two. He got a bit bored by “Fruit Ninja” so he wanted to play something else. Harry had just turned the game off, wanting to start “Angry Birds”, as he finally got a text from Niall saying that yes, Zayn had left his room again and demanding Harry to ‘hurry the fuck up if he wanted to stick to their plan’.

Although he tried to silently open the door, it still made a croaking noise, sounding a hundred times louder in the quiet night, than it would have at day time. Harry peered through the hall way, his eyes already used to the lack of light, and when he didn’t find any signs of a teacher or concierge guarding the hall, he tiptoed to Niall’s room.

Halfway on his way, a hand ticked him on his back, startling him so he almost cried out of utter surprise. Badly hoping that he wasn’t busted by a teacher he cautiously turned around. He was astonished by the sight in front of him. A girl of his age was standing in front of him, her blond hair in a messy bun and her training pants loosely on her hips. Harry vaguely recognized the girl from his English class last year, Carrie or Perrie or something, she was called. But what was she doing in the hallway of the boy’s dorms?

With adrenaline still pumping through his veins, Harry whispered loudly, “What are you doing here?”

He didn’t get any answer. The silence frightened him even more, making him bite his lip so hard he tasted the iron flavour of his own blood.

The girl, who had had her gaze set on nothing before, looking the whole time at an empty space behind Harry, suddenly looked him straight in the eyes. Her eyes, well or Harry was once again imagining things or they were really all white, lacking any sort of pupil.

She opened her mouth and spoke with a clear, but monotone voice. “At full moons things change, danger that was hidden underneath gets revealed. The night doesn’t hide, it shows instead. If you want to live, stay safe and don’t leave.”

Her voice hadn’t sound like Harry remembered it to be. It was too low and had some sort of echo. Completely confused by her cryptic words, Harry bewildered took a step in her direction buzzing a bunch of questions, hoping for clearance.

“What are you talking about? What do you mean things change and what gets revealed? And why do you think I would leave?”

He didn’t get any questions however as the girl just repeated her last words, “If you want to live, stay safe and don’t leave.”

She then swiftly turned around making her way back to the girls’ dorm rooms of this mixed boarding school. A little bit in shock Harry stood still. Wondering why the girl’s appearance had startled him that much, he came to the conclusion that the whole time she had been looking Harry in the eyes, she hadn’t blinked once. She must have been sleepwalking.

Harry let a breath in reveal he didn’t even know he was holding, before walking to Niall’s dorm room again, the words of the girl were still playing in his mind and her eyes burning holes in his memory.

He silently knocked two times on the door, which was the sign they had both agreed upon, and waited for a response. Not even a second later, the door was put ajar with Niall’s eyes peeking through the opening. He then placed his index finger in front of his lips, telling Harry to be silent and motioned him to come inside with a whispered, “You’re late, Harry!”

Inside the room Harry saw Sean and Josh sleeping soundlessly on the right side, the left bunk however was completely empty, no sign of Zayn. At the end of their room the window was put wide open. The chilly gust of wind coming from it and the movements the curtains were making next to the window, reminded Harry of when Louis had left their room. Suddenly he felt a definite curiosity and desperately wanted to know why Zayn had escaped.

Niall was already sticking his head through the open window and watching the ground to see if they would land softly if they jumped out of it. Luckily the boy’s dorm rooms were on the ground floor. A second later Niall had jumped out, landing with a soft ‘ploff’ on the, with grass covered, ground.

Harry soon followed, as they didn’t really had any time left to waste. He too landed softly and after his jump he made an effort in trying to close the window, but it didn’t really work.

Clutching at his sleeve, Niall pulled him further away from the room, so they could talk without waking someone.

“What now?” Harry asked, when Niall had finally let him go, standing near a young pine tree.

“Uhm, I don’t know? We need to find Zayn, where do you reckon he is?”

They both looked around, trying to come up with an answer. It was Harry who finally came up with a new plan.

“I suggest one of us goes to the street side, looking if he’s maybe dealing something or doing anything else that can’t be done at daytime. The other then goes to the left, to the woods?”

Niall was already nodding in agreement even before Harry had ended his sentence.

“Sure, I’ll go to the streets.”

“Keep your phone on so we can text if we find him, okay?” the curly haired boy asked and eventually added in concern, “And call me if anything goes wrong.”

“Yeah, ‘s okay. But come on lets go, we have to be quick to still find him.” Niall smiled and then took off in the direction of street lights.

Harry moved to the more dark side of the campus. Due to thick clouds, the light of the full moon couldn’t help him to clear his sight. While marching to the forest, Harry almost fell over a branch or slipped in mud numerous times.

********************

After 15 minutes of struggling, he has barely moved, but enough to arrive at the edge of the forest. Just behind a troublesome thornish bush, Harry saw a dark shadow standing shirtless on the dirty forest ground, head held up to the sky, but trembling hands put in his pockets. Harry recognized the tall quiff, knowing that it was in fact Zayn who was hiding there in the woods.

He was really glad that the dark haired lad wasn’t dealing any drugs or sneaking outside to murder, probably just wanted to escape school to smoke or think. It was nice to know he could worry about one thing less. (Oh how wrong Harry was at this moment.)

Harry just wanted to call the brooding boy, ask if everything was alright and if he maybe wanted to talk about something, when everything seemed to change in less than a second.

The first thing, the thing that actually started everything was the movement of the clouds. They were currently leaving in front of the moon, revealing its bright surface and therefore casting a glowing light over the earth and more important, over the lad standing only a couple of meters away from Harry.

It barely took a hundredth of a second for Zayn to fall on his knees, hands spread in front of him. Thanks to the moon light, Harry could easily read the lad’s facial expression, one that was now full of pain and suffering, with his eyes forced closed and mouth opened only in a grimace. A ripping sound echoed through the night air, when his back seemed to burst open, letting a dark brown fur come through his skin. Immediately after that, his fingers changed into claws, and his shoes and pants burst open to reveal even more of the brownish fur. As he arched his back, the bones of his spine decided to break and heal again in a different way, causing a frightening splitting sound.

The wolf, as the metamorphosis was now complete, raised his head up at to sky to let a terrifying howl. It then brusquely averted his gaze, turning his head abrupt to the side. Yellow eyes were aimed directly at Harry.

This seemed to break the spell that had holding Harry still for so long. He fell backwards, his mouth wide open out of complete shock, but he was too scared to even utter a sound, let alone a scream. His first instinct was to leave, to flee from this beast so Harry tried to get a grip on his limbs, crawling away from the bush and trying to stand up at the same time.

Tears of fear were staining his face as he looked back one more time before running away. The surprise of his life came when the place where the wolf had been standing only seconds ago was now vacant. The answer of where he could have gone came quickly as Harry turned his head again to the front.

Not even a meter in front of him the almost 2 meter tall wolf was standing proudly on 4 legs, its head lowered to the height of Harry’s and loud breathing through its nose so Harry could feel every breath it let go. They stood like that for almost a minute, Harry almost paralyzed out of fear, until the curly haired boy found the strength in his muscles back, and took a careful step backwards.

This had been the worst decision he had ever made, as the wolf in response squinted his eyes and bared his yellow teeth, no they were more like tusks. A line of spit was hanging in between its upper and lower teeth as it growled dangerously, ready to attack. It made itself ready to jump on Harry and the boy closed his eyes, sure that his life was soon to end.

During this last moment, his thoughts drifted off to his family, who he hoped would eventually get over the loss of their son or brother, to his friends who had always been there for him, to Niall whom he hoped that didn’t came to check upon him, to Louis...

Louis... In this last moment everything came clear for Harry. Now knowing how short life could be, knowing that it would all end in less than a second, his feelings for the fringed haired boy came clear and Harry regretted never giving in, never letting his ‘little crush’ lead his actions, he regretted never telling his beautiful, blue-eyed roommate how much he had started to mean for Harry in only such a short amount time.

It was all too late of course as everything came to an end now.

Too late?
