Louis’ POV

*

Louis was the first one to arrive at the classroom. He scuffed to the back, dropping his backpack next to the desk. As he plumped himself down, Louis let a deep sigh.

The previous course had been like hell. How was it possible that after all those years, after attending school so much longer than any other student ever had, his maths skills were still awful. It really didn’t make any sense. The lad could fluently speak fiive different languages. History was a piece of cake as he had lived through most of it. Hell, he could even handle sciences though those were rather modern subjects. Really, he mastered it all. All except for maths of course. After all those years the parabolas and matrices still hadn’t revealed their secrets to Louis.

Of course, It had just been the first lesson, but Louis was already one hundred and fifty percent sure he would fail this year’s maths too, like he had done every previous time.

Louis sighed again, fixing his gaze on the ceiling as other students were, too, entering the classroom. At times like these, when his mood already wasn’t that bright, he hated it that he had to avoid human contact. The vampire completely understood Liam’s reasons. Because it absolutely did make sense to try not to withdraw attention on them as it was a delicate case not to be found by hunters. Anyone or anyone’s parents could be the reason of their death. If the wrong people found out that two vampires were attending this school, there was big a chance they wouldn’t survive it. So really, Louis did grasp that loneliness was almost required to be a vampire, but in his human life Louis had been a very sociable lad.

He used to have dozens of friends all loving him endlessly for his amazing sense of humour and chipper mood. People used to be drawn to him because of his natural charm. Girls batting with their eyelashes while listening to one of the lad’s stories, little boys following him around town, wanting to be just like him, Louis had enjoyed it all. Louis plainly used to be a people person.

It had all changed of course the moment Liam turned him into a creature of the night. From one moment to the other he couldn’t be the lad he used to be, his only company now being the brown eyed lad. And he was okay with that, he had to, but sometimes he just wanted to be like his younger self. He wanted to be able to joke around again without having to think about the consequences or flirt with half the world’s population, even just talking to someone else without wanting to plant his fangs in their necks. And sometimes, sometimes he really just needed someone to make him smile again.

Louis’ thoughts were interrupted by a delicious fragrance making its way to his nostrils. He didn’t need to look up to know that Harry had entered the room, his scent spoke for itself.

The knowledge that Louis could spend every psychology course with the curly haired lad instantly cheered him up. Although his scent could drive Louis crazy, he definitely liked the lad. Perhaps it was only because he had finally found someone new he was allowed to talk to, well Liam couldn’t obligate him to plainly ignore their roommate couldn’t he? And maybe the lad with his adorable curls and awkward conversations really was amazing company.

Louis’ bubble of thoughts was for the second time popped when the teachers’ voice, telling everyone where to sit, finally reached his ears. Thinking that he had luck on his side, he silently cheered the moment that his name was called after Harry’s.

While sitting next to the boy, he couldn’t stop himself from teasing Harry and when the taller lad’s cheeks heated up, he knew that he wanted to do anything to gain this reaction from him again.

‘Is everyone finally seated? Alright, I will then explain how this year is going to work,’ The excited grin on the teacher’s face still hadn’t managed to falter. His eyes were joyfully scanning each pupil’s face.

‘The places you have now will be the same for the rest of the year.’

Without wavering because of the loud groan that sounded in the classroom he continued his speech,

‘The reason for this is that the person you’re sitting next to at this very moment will be your psychology partner for the rest of the year. I didn’t want you to sit next to your best friends for the reason that you likely already know all about them.’

He stopped for a moment gladly to see that he finally had gained the attention of every student in the room.

‘This year you will get to know your partner better and you will apply the material you’ll learn in class on each other. This will vary from personality tests to analysing dreams and looking into each other’s pasts.’

Mr Murs now started to distribute bundles.

‘This lesson we will start with filling in a basic questionnaire that you will need later this semester. Now has anyone any questions?’

A tall girl with blond, curly hair slowly raised her hand.

‘Yes, Ms Anderson?

‘What if we won’t like our partner? I mean I surely don’t know her yet,’ she gave the girl next to her an encouraging smile, letting her know that she had nothing against her.

‘What I wanted to say is, you want us to spend a lot of time together as we will have to work on various assignments after class, but what if we really can’t get along. I won’t spill my deepest secrets to just anyone. Spending that much time with someone you don’t like will cause troubles, won’t it?’

The teacher only gave her a mysterious smile answering, ‘Don’t worry I have already thought about that, Ms Anderson. Let’s put it this way, fights are very interesting in the area of psychology. We can learn from every kind of relationships, not only friendship. It certainly won’t form any problems, so you are all stuck with the person next to you. No pairings will be changed.’

After he was done with distributing the lists, he added, ‘Now fill these in and try to get to know your partner.’

Louis could finally turn his attention back on Harry. He wanted to say something, but was taken aback by the closeness of the other lad. His curls, and therefore Harry’s splendid scent too, only inches away from his face caused Louis’ fangs to come out. He had fed only hours ago, but the taller lad already managed to elicit such reaction.

Harry, unaware of Louis’ problem, was eyeing the questionnaire, ‘What does he mean with basic question list? What part is basic about “What kinda Furby would you like to be”?’

The shorter lad grabbed his pen and started to spin it through his fingers.

‘Just start with it already. The sooner we begin this, the sooner we finish, the sooner we can get out of this class.’

After filling in each other’s basic information such as surnames and birthdays, Harry buzzed the first question, ‘What is your favourite colour?’

Without thinking about his answer, Louis bluntly replied, ‘Green.’

‘Why?’ Was the immediate response. Harry’s wide eyes were looking in Louis’ as if he really was that interested in him. Louis thought his answer over again. He himself didn’t even know why he had said it was green. If someone had asked him the very same questions a couple of days ago, he was sure that the answer would’ve been ‘dark red’ as that had always been his favourite.

While watching the other lad’s orbs hovering in front of his own, he decided to just tell the truth, ‘It’s the colour of your eyes and I quite like it,’ he shrugged, making clear that it wasn’t a big deal.

‘What’s yours?’ He questioned immediately after, so the curly haired lad couldn’t dig deeper.

‘It’s orange,’

Louis furrowed his eyebrows, ‘Orange? You’re probably the first person ever to have orange as your favourite colour.’

‘But it’s a happy colour!’ Harry instantly retorded, ‘What’s not to like about it?’ Harry pouted slightly and crossed his arms, looking like he really was offended by Louis’ statement.

Louis chuckled lightly, ‘you’re actually right, Curly. Orange is a nice colour if you think of it like that. You’ve truly opened my eyes.’

This made the lad in front of him smile again, shamelessly showing his dimples. Seriously this adorable kid will be the end of Louis.

‘Now up to the next question then,’ Louis said “If you could be any animal, which animal would you choose?”’

‘A cat.’

It was now Louis’ time to ask a bewildered ‘Why?’

‘I like cats. Cats are cuddly and cute and they love you endlessly. I have a cat at home, Dusty. She’s really sweet.’

If Louis would be honest he could definitely picture Harry as a cat. He only missed a pair of fluffy ears among his head of curls and a black cat tail attached to his back, hanging between his legs. Other from missing that, the lad was almost the human representative of a kitten with his big eyes and soft behaviour.

‘What about you?’

‘A bird.’

‘What kind of a bird?’

‘I don’t know Curly, a flying bird?’

‘So you want to be able to fly?’

‘Yes,’ Louis was getting a bit irritated. Why couldn’t Harry just take bird as answer, was he really that interested in him that he wanted to know such things?

‘Why?’

‘Just, you know being free. Going where you want to go, flying where you want to fly, not caring about others opinions, leaving them behind you.’

‘What’s stopping you from doing those things now?’

Louis wanted to answer with a sassy comment, but soon discovered that the lad was right once again. What kept him here? Why didn’t he just travel by himself for a while? Liam would understand completely as he had done it himself for a couple of hundred years. Was Louis really that dependant that he just followed Liam everywhere, not making his own choices. Didn’t he had his own opinion and personality or have they vanished along with his humanity?

A few questions later –their questionnaire was almost halfway done –the bell rang and the students around them started to pack up. Louis was still thinking about Harry’s earlier question about freedom.
