《Friends with the Football Team》8~ Snow Cones

Sunday was a normal day in the Barnes household. It was one of the few days of the week that the boys didn't have football practice.

"What are you kids doing today?" Dad asked Coop, Con, and I as we sat on the couch watching Last Man Standing.

I shrugged. "This was pretty much my plan." I gestured to how we were now.

"I'm going to the store and running errands. I won't be back for a while. Y'all should get out of the house. Go to the park. Go shopping. Do something." He urged us. "I'm out of here. I love all of y'all. Try and take Carter too."

He waved as he left the house.

"What do you say about football in the park?" Connor asked the two of us.

"Hell yes, I'm in" Coop and I said at the same time. "That's creepy" we said again.

"Ugh shut up!" I growled.

Connor was laughing his ass off as was Cooper. I rolled my eyes and headed to my room.

I changed out of my hoodie and leggings and into a pair of running shorts and a tank top. I threw my hair up into a high pony and I was ready.

Cooper and Connor were trying to get out of his room and come with us. I looked at Connor with a questioning look to which he shook his head.

"Come on Carter, you should get out of the house." I urged.

"Leave me alone. I don't want to go." He growled at me.

"Why not? You've been a grump ever since we got here unless you're around your friends. You need some sunshine. Get adjusted to the place."

"I told you I don't want to go Cora. Now leave me the hell alone" he snapped.

I growled in frustration. "Fine be a jackass, but you can't mope around all the freaking time. It's childish and stupid." I yelled and stormed away.

The boys followed me silently. Connor grabbed his keys off the hook and the three of us went outside. I hopped into the front seat and slammed my door in anger.

Connor and Cooper got in the car slowly. I took a deep breath to calm myself down.

"Coco?" Coop asked softly.

I turned to him and Connor. Their faces showed concern. I never really blew up at my brothers. I've always had a pretty good relationship with them. There have been sibling fights but it was over something stupid and ended quickly.

"I'm sorry guys." I apologized and ran a hand down my face. "He's been a jerk recently and it got to me."

"It's okay. We understand." Connor said as he started the car, but made it move to back out of the driveway. He looked over at me with another concern look.

I put a smile on my face and looked at my brothers. "Let's go to the park" I smiled and Connor pulled out of the drive way.

We played our favorite music and all of my worries about Carter just washed away.

The town wasn't that big. They had a Main Street with most everything on it. The store was at the end of the road. The school was to the left of Main Street as well as the football field. The park wasn't far from the school.

I haven't had much of a chance to explore the town. It was small and a little run down, but it was a great town.

We arrived at the park and walked to the little clearing. Good thing there weren't any kids practicing football or soccer. We started playing football, even though it was unfair because it was two on one.

We played for a while until some guy came up to us. He looked like a teenager. Most likely a junior or senior.

He smiled at us. "Hey do you mind if I join in?" He asked.

His smile wasn't as cute as Will's.

"Yeah sure man" Con answered. "I'm Connor, that's Cooper, and our little sister Cora"

"I think I've grown out of little sister by now" I grumbled with my arms crossed.

Cooper slung his arm over my shoulders. "You'll always be our little sister"

"And you'll always be a pain in my ass" I shot back.

Guy who has yet to name himself laughed at our exchange. "I'm Jonah by the way. Are y'all just visiting for the summer or did you move here?"

"We just moved here from Dallas. Our dad got a job as football coach at Greenhill High." I answered.

He nodded. The boys we're getting antsy so we started the game. It was Jonah and I on a team again Cooper and Carter. We played our own version between two touch and tackle. Mainly because of me because the boys think I'm made of glass. Jonah kept up surprisingly well.

I felt a pang of pain hit my knee and I stopped. "I'm going to take a water break really quick." I called out to the guys.

"You good?" Jonah asked.

"I'm fine, just a little tired." I hobbled over to my water and sat against a tree.

"Cora Maeve Barnes don't you even lie to me right now. Does your knee hurt?" Connor asked me seriously.

"No I'm fine"

He gave me a stern look.

"It's just sore" I lied. My knee hurt a lot more than I let on.

"You and your stubborn ass." He rolled his eyes. "Where the hell's your knee brace?"

I shrugged. "Home? I think it's hidden somewhere in a box or something."

"Yeah you're done for the day." He stood up and looked to Cooper and Jonah, who were throwing around the football. "Sorry guys we're leaving." He called out to them.

"What? Why?" Coop pouted.

"Cora's hurting." He pointed over at me. "Don't give me that look Cora. I've known you your entire life, I can tell when you're hurting."

I rolled my eyes, but I stood up and got my stuff together.

"Sorry Jonah my brother are a bit dramatic and overprotective, but it was nice playing football with you" I said.

He waved me off. He pulled out his phone. "Nah you're good my mom wants me home anyway." He smiled. "Bye guys, it was good meeting y'all" he waved and we all waved back and said bye.

"He was nice" Cooper said.

"Yeah he was" Connor and I agreed.

We made our way back to Connor's car.

"Snow Cones!" Coop yelled. "Can we please get them? Please!"

"Do we really need them, Coop?" Connor groaned.

I turned to Connor and gave him my puppy dog eyes. A little trick I learned years ago. The boys hardly ever say no to my puppy dog eyes.

He rolled his eyes, but a smile crept on his face. "Fine. You two are children" he mumbled under his breath.

Coop and I ran to get in line while Con followed behind us.

"What can I get you?" The lady asked with a smile.

"Can I get the cotton candy in a medium?" I asked politely.

"And I'll have the blue raspberry also a medium." Cooper said.

I turned to Connor. "So you want one Con?"

"Small birthday cake, please" he told the lady.

"$8.50 is the total and I'll get those snow cones right out for you." She said with a smile.

Connor handed her a ten dollar bill. "Keep the change" he told her.

Our snow cones were done and the lady wished us a good day. Coop and I did a happy dance as we ate our snow cones.

"Children, literal children" Connor rolled his eyes. He couldn't help but smile though.

We drove home with music playing as we screamed along to the lyrics. We all had smiles on our faces as we sang our favorite songs together.

Instead of growing straight home, we drove around town. We rolled the windows down and felt the wind on our sweaty faces. My stomach growled and I turned down the music much to Cooper's dismay.

"Hey!" He yelled in protest.

"I'm hungry" I told Connor.

"We'll go to the burger place. It's right up here" Connor pointed up the road.

"Is this the one that almost killed me?" I asked.

He nodded as we pulled into the parking lot.

We all walked it and it smelled amazing.

"Hi welcome in. What can I get for you today?" The guy behind the counter said.

"Can I have the bacon cheeseburger with fries and a medium drink please?" Connor asked.

"Make that two." Cooper said.

The man looked at me in anticipation. "And for you?" He asked.

"Chilly cheese fries and a medium drink, please and thank you." I smiled.

"Is that all for you today?" He asked.

I looked at the boys and nodded. "That's all"

"$23.84 is your total" he said.

I handed him my card despite the boys' protest. The guys asked for a name for the order and I gave him my last name. He gave us out cups and we filled them up ourselves.

Connor was grumbling about how I paid for lunch.

"You bought snow cones" I argued.

"Is there a problem with treating my sibling with food?" He asked as he plopped down at a booth.

"It is if I want to too" I stuck my tongue out at him.

I heard the bell above the door ring and instinctively I looked up to see who it was. Will and Kenzie walked through the door.

"Hey guys!" Cooper called.

Will and Kenzie both looked over here and waved. Will silently gestured to the counter indicating that he was going to order.

Kenzie told him something before walking over here to hug me.

"Hey Kenz" I hugged her.

"Hey Cor. Guess what?" She said.

Her smile was from ear to ear. Her eyes lit up in a certain way.

"What?"

"Grayson asked me out on a real date." She squealed.

"That's great news. I told you being yourself would pay off." I nudged her shoulder with mine. "Does Will know?" I asked.

"Does Will know what?" He asked as he walked up to our table.

He took a seat with Connor on the other side.

"About my date with Grayson." She said.

Will grumbled something I couldn't hear, but apparently Kenzie did and she punched his arm. Will jutted out his bottom lip and rubbed the spot she punch.

"Do you guys see how much I'm abused?" He joked.

"You deserve it" Kenzie said as she took the seat next to me and flipped her hair sassily.

We all laughed.

"Anyway what are you guys doing here?" Will asked.

"We we're at the park playing some football and got hungry." I explained.

"Yeah we had to leave because someone's a stubborn ass and won't wear her knee brace like she's supposed to. You have to ice that when you get home" Connor ordered sternly.

I rolled my eyes, "Yes dad."

"What are y'all here for?" Cooper asked Will.

"Came from the mall" he pointed across the street where the mall was located.

I turned to Kenzie. "Oh did you get anything cute?" I asked.

"I got some more flannels and denim shorts. Nothing much." She shrugged.

"Order for Barnes" the guy called.

"Is that yours?" Will asked. I nodded. "I'll get it"

"Thank you!" I called out.

Will came back with our tray. He put it in the middle of our table. The boys grabbed their burgers and I got my chilly cheese fries.

"Chilly cheese fries?" Will asked.

"I almost died last time I ate a burger from here, not chancing that again. At least not now."

Kenzie gave me a questioning look.

"I'm severely allergic to pickles and last time we ordered without pickles and they still put them on. It was really my fault. I should've checked before I bit it." I shrugged.

"Wow, that's crazy" Kenzie said.

The guy called for Will's and he got up and got it for him and Kenz. As we ate, we talked and joked around.
