《Little Thief (Black Butler G/T)》Chapter Twenty-four

Sebastian stood in silence in front of the kitchen sink, his gloves off to the side as he scrubbed the delicate china he'd used for his Master's tea. Off to the side, Kadence was on her hands and knees, using a tiny scrap of cloth to was one of the teaspoons. She was equally silent, but it was not an uncomfortable silence between the two. They were simply focused on completing their own tasks.

Kadence though had her mind on what the demon had overheard. He wasn't asking her about it. Why she cared he wasn't, she didn't know. It made her wonder what was going through his mind, or if he even cared about what she said. Her heart hurt as that thought crossed her mind, but she shook it off. He can't love. So why was this bothering her so much?

"Oh, will you just ask me already?!" Kadence practically shouted, suddenly pushing herself to her feet and locked her emerald colored eyes on the tall raven butler.

Sebastian stopped what he was doing, lowering the china cup back into the warm water. His crimson eyes turned toward her before he closed them with a smile. "Whatever do you mean?"

"You obviously had overheard the conversation between the Earl and I, yet you don't say anything," she tightened her hold on the small rag in her hands. "Why? And why do I care? I shouldn't, you explained to me what you are, what you can and can't do, so why do I care that you don't care about what I said?"

She lowered her head, closing her eyes tightly. "I'm a stupid girl that probably fell for the first person to show me an ounce of kindness. That's why. And the person I fell for just so happened to be someone that can't return my feelings. God, how stupid and naive can someone get?" The rag fell from her hands to the counter. "I'm a fool."

Sebastian blinked in surprise, staring down at the tiny woman before him. Just under an hour ago she said she couldn't fall for someone that wouldn't love her back yet here she was practically stating she had fallen for him. He didn't think he was trying to make her this way. At least, not intentionally. This time. But her words were true. He couldn't love. Yet seeing her this distraught stirred some strange emotion in him. "Kadence, I"

"Shut up, don't," the Borrower stepped back. She hasn't felt this urge to run and hide from him since they met. But her legs moved on her own and she started to run. She ran as fast as her legs would allow across the counter with the only thought in mind to get away from him.

Sebastian began to reach for her but stopped midway. Would it be best to keep her right now? Maybe he should let her calm down. But with how fast she was moving toward the edge of the counter, he could see she wouldn't have time to slow down enough to safely climb down the side.

His still bare fingers moved swiftly, curling in front of her and gently closing around her in a loose fist. "Now, you shouldn't talk like that to someone far bigger than you," he stated simply, feeling her struggle against his hand.

Kadence briefly forgot about her internal battle, a shot of fear suddenly coursing through her. Slowly she turned her eyes to look at the butler, wondering if he was angry, but his face wasn't showing it. His brows were furrowed, his lips curled into a frown, but not an upset or irritated one. Was it possible there was a slight bit of concern in his eyes or was she imagining it?

Slowly, Sebastian pulled his hand back over and opened his fingers to allow her to rest in his open palm. He lightly sighed, tilting his head. "You peak my interest yet you worry me too. Honestly, you could have gotten yourself hurt."

"You don't care," Kadence muttered bitterly, covering her mouth with her hand. "God, why can't I shut up?!"

"You upset yourself," Sebastian again sighed. "I have time, perhaps we should both take a break and have a conversation to ease your fears and worries. Does that sound fine?" He questioned softly, watching her with a calm expression.

Kadence slowly lifted her head to meet his gaze, her eyes glistening from the tears that threatened to start pouring. She didn't speak but simply nodded.

Sebastian glanced toward the water in the sink, thinking back to what his Master had said when he was first instructed to keep an eye on her. What she did and what happened would be on him. He couldn't allow her human emotions to run rampent while they had tasks to complete.

Kadence was silent as the butler carried her from the kitchen back to his room, almost running into Meyrin on the way but he wasily avoided her for the time being. Something in the Borrower dreaded this conversation.

Closing his door with a light click, his crimson eyes again turned to look at her. "Kadence, you have said your part. I'd like you to listen now. Please do not test my patience." He paused, taking a moment to choose his words and speak in a way she would understand.

"I cannot love. That much is true. But you cannot let your emotions cloud your judgment right now. You are now a Phantomhive servant. You-" He stopped midsentence, recognizing the familiar sight of her shaking shoulders and lowered head. "You...are crying."

The hole where his heart would be twisted. Her near inaudible sobs made his gut churn. What was this? Sadness? He's never really felt anything of the sort. He always believed he was incapable of human emotion. Any of them. Yet things have changed since she arrived.

Hesitantly, Sebastian took his other hand and used his index finger to lift her head. He then used the pad of his thumb to wipe the tears from her face. "My...such red eyes are unfit for a lady, even if you are a servant."

Kadence sniffled, closing her eyes as the large hands shifted her into a comfortable position and the fingers wiped tears from her face. She raised one of her hands, resting it against the closest finger. Suddenly, she was engulfed in warmth and opened her eyes to find the hands almost cradling her against the black covered torso of the demon. Looking up, she could see his crimson eyes watching her in an almost concerned fashion.

Sebastian's eyes softened ever so slightly, handling her as gingerly as he could. "Sometimes I forget just how gentle I have to be with such a fragile young lady. You'll have to forgive me." The corner of his lips lifted in a small smile before his eyes again widened in shock.

The Borrower had turned on her side, nestling herself further against him, her tiny hands gripping handfuls of fabric. Her head turned, burying her face into him. The small body trembled in his hands but not from fear. He couldn't tell if she was crying anymore, but he did hold still.

"Such a curious little thing you are," he whispered, which went ignored by the Borrower as he sat on his bed in silence, only cradling the tiny female in his hands to try and comfort her as he had done when she was attacked and frightened before.
