《Little Thief (Black Butler G/T)》Chapter Twenty-One

"What is it, Sebastian?" Finnian asked with his usual wide smile, a pair of gardening shears in his hand.
As soon as he was close enough to see Kadence, Sebastian used his free hand to take the scissor-like gardening tool. He opened his hand just enough Finny could see her but kept his fingers still curled in a protective manner. He knew how the servants could be when they were excited or curious about something.
Kadence stared at the blonde gardener, it only taking a few moments before his sky blue eyes landed on her. A look of pure disbelief washed over his face, but his lips curled up into a cheerful grin.
"Oh my! She's absolutely lovely! Sebastian, what is she? When did you find her?" Finnian's hand raised and moved as if it was going to touch her. Kadence instinctively cringed away and gloved fingers lifted to shield her from the oncoming hand.
"Finny. This is Kadence. She's a Borrower and has been living in the walls for some time now. However, she is a servant here now. So you will still treat her with the same respect you others treat each other with. Ah, she is also quite frightened when it comes to new people. And you can not just grab her, she is still a lady after all." Sebastian spoke calmly, unfurling his fingers ever so slightly once Finny showed no ore intention of touching Kadence without her consent.
"She's so small. Hello there." Finny spoke just above a whisper, the smile never leaving his face. His blue eyes wandered over her, curiously taking in her appearance and minuscule size. "I've never heard of a Borrower before. Why were you in the walls?"
Kadence was comforted by Sebastian's explanation, and the innocence in Finny's voice when he directly spoke to her made him seem like the kind of fellow she could get used to being around. As long as he followed the whole 'no grabbing' rule unless it was an absolute emergency. She was struggling with how to explain what she was to him though. Though the truth in this situation may be best.

"I-I suppose you could also call me a thief. I took only what I needed to survive though. B-Buttons, a sewing needle, a thimble at one point. I would also take bits of food. Sometimes enough to last me days if I were lucky, but quite often it was only enough to get me through that day." Kadence spoke softly, her hands unconsciously gripping the skirt of her maid uniform. She found it easier to explain with Sebastian nearby to clear things up if needed.
"So you barely had enough to live? That's horrible. But you're living at the Phantomhive mansion and now we're all going to know about you, so you don't have to worry about that ever again. Meyrin, Bard, Tanaka, Sebastian and myself can make sure you have whatever you need." The gardener's smile only widened and he glanced in Sebastian's direction for confirmation as his words, receiving a silent nod.
"However, Finny, you cannot tell anyone about her or talk to anyone about her besides the names you just mentioned," Sebastian spoke up after a few minutes of silence, one of his thin eyebrows raising to add to the serious tone in his voice. "You are also to report any strange people that may be hanging around the manor, for they are after her."
Finnian straightened up and gave a firm salute with his grin still on his face. "You can count on me, sir! I better get back to work too so we can talk later, and you can tell me more about Borrower's." He looked back at Kadence who nodded in response.
"I think that'd be nice...thank you Finny. For the warm welcome and for your kindness." Giving a polite bow of the head, she watched him walk away before turning her head to look up at Sebastian. "Who's next?"

For the next hour or so, Sebastian introduced her to Meyrin and Tanaka. Meyrin naturally made a big deal out of it, questioning the Borrower in an almost interrogating fashion. She seemed to be more excited about having another girl in the mansion rather than anything else about her. Tanaka didn't seem all that surprised and simply welcomed her to the estate along with assigning himself to take care of what she could need as a servant.
Bard was the more challenging of the four to explain the situation to. He kept bringing up topics that could strain the trust the others already put into her. He was the only one of them that seemed to not believe a word she said about taking only what she needed to survive. Sebastian wasn't worried though. The chef would come around in due time, and he put faith in himself that even if Bard were to try something he'd be able to stop it with no issues at all.
Sebastian, still holding Kadence in his palm, returned to his bedroom in the servant's wing of the mansion. "It would seem they all welcome you to this little 'family' as they call it." He loudly sighed, closing his eyes briefly to rid himself of the oncoming headache he'd always get dealing with any of those four.
Kadence exhaled loudly, feeling rather exhausted from simply meeting them. "Sebastian, how am I going to test my skills?" She muttered, changing the topic to the one she felt was the most important, as it could be the only thing keeping her alive and sheltered.
The demon fell silent, choosing his words and struggling to make sense as to why she was so interested in getting the whole ordeal over with. Curious little thing. As always, she peaked his interest and made him wonder just what it was about her that could make her so fascinating to him.
However, there wasn't much she could truly do to test her abilities. There was sneaking around the servants, but if they didn't know she was there, most likely the small female would get hurt. And they couldn't just send her in to a case without guaranteeing that she wouldn' get caught or harmed.
Then, it hit him. He could mess with the Young Earl and do what the boy said at the same time.
"The Young Master has a meeting. Perhaps that would be the best time. I can allow you to sneak in and see what all you can pick up from their conversation."
Kadence could see the smirk plain as day on his face, and her heart lightly fluttered. For a human -er, demon- he was certainly attractive. Silently clearing her throat, she nodded in agreement. "Can you promise I won't get into trouble?"
Sebastian smiled in response to her question and placed his free hand over where his heart would be. Might as well see if she truly is as stealthy as he believes she can be. "Well, can you avoid getting caught?"
