《Metanoia》Chapter 15

"We're close to arriving. At least five minutes."

You sat near Mista while the boat raced on the water, Fugo answering Bruno and reconfirming the mission. It looked like you were simply looking at the water because you were.

Your mind was blank. It felt like forever since you just thought about nothing, you were always thinking about something, but recently you found yourself thinking of the people you were surrounded by. All of them had something that attracted you to them and with the events, over the past few days, you were happy that you could have a blank mind for awhile.

"Sooooo."

Mista had scooted closer to you and dragged out his word. You looked at him and he sent you a wide grin, your thoughts of nothing had vanished. He had leaned back and stretched. He let out a very fake yawn and succeeded in slipping his arm around you.

"Fugo says you like the ocean."

Giorno was frowning while watching and Narancia was grinding his teeth with his arms crossed. Mista was going to hit on you and this was clear as day. Even you could see it.

"Yeah, marine biology."

"Well if you were a fish you'd be an Angelfish."

You let out a small laugh and Narancia grew mad. A blush tinted your cheeks while you looked at him. Your laughter making the Sex Pistols cheer and celebrate behind Mista's back. Mista's chest swelling up with pride.

"Thanks, Mista."

Narancia watched this and huffed. Looking away from you and Mista with steam coming out of his ears.

"I was the one that called her an angel first."

Narancia muttered under his breath to himself and Giorno's frown deepened. Abbacchio sat with his arms crossed while looking at the scenery trying to keep his cool.

Mista had a small pad of paper in his hand with a list of possible pick up lines. All of them ocean-related. He brought his arm back and turned away for a moment. He took a pencil out from his hat and scratched out the one used and turned back to you. Now using the next pickup line that was on the list.

"Are you an octopus? Because you octopi my thoughts."

You let out another laugh, you couldn't help it they were so bad but so good at the same time. Mista's face was consumed with a happy grin and a blush on his cheeks.

"The was so cheesy where did you get these?"

Mista rubbed the back of his neck and shrugged, acting cool and giving you a cheesy smile.

"Straight from my mind-"

"He was using the laptop earlier."

Abbacchio answered sternly and you smiled and looked at Mista, letting a small laugh leave your lips as he blushed from embarrassment. Bruno started to go over the mission and your light attitude dimmed. You looked over at the turtle. Trish was inside.

She's about to meet her dad. I guess this is the last time I see her... She'll get a new name, probably move away or live a protected life with her dad, she'll be safe that's what matters.

You smiled to yourself and nodded, attempting to be happy for her and looked at the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The place you were supposed to go to. Mista had distracted you a bit with his bad attempt at flirting and you thought about Passione

Would it be so bad to join? Or well, stay. No one said I couldn't study marine life in my free time and I think I've gotten closer to the team members. I am more of a follower than a leader and getting a mission from a boss to complete actually doesn't sound too bad. Like little achievements and goals in a video game. It's been hard to figure out what to feel but I did just join and it'd be nice being part of a team.

"Bucciarati, we've arrived."

You were taken out of your thoughts and looked up at the top of the bell tower. Your boss was up there.

"The instructions are really detailed. He's extremely cautious. Though you have to be when you're a mafia boss."

You tore your eyes away from the tower and drummed your fingers on the rim of the boat.

"This means our mission ends here."

Abbacchio's voice was definitely one thing you'd miss if you were to try and leave. You couldn't get over it. No woman could.

Abbacchio turned to look at you and your blood run cold. You realized that you had been staring at him for a time, even your breathing had gotten heavier. He raised an eyebrow at you and your heart rate skyrocketed and your face paled.

Oh no. No no no no.

You coughed on your spit and you turned away. Making it so your back was facing him and that you could calm down.

I need to calm down. I need to stop thinking. I need to just not think. This is not the time nor place. It's just his voice. That shouldn't be affecting me this much.

Abbacchio looked at your back and smirked. That look in your eyes you had when you were watching him. He knew what you were thinking and looked amused.

I'm a teenage girl. I have hormones, I'm allowed to think someone's good looking.

"Y/n are you ok?"

You looked over your shoulder at Giorno and avoided eye contact with Abbacchio. Giorno looked a bit confused and you managed to calm down to some extent.

"Yeah, thanks, Giorno."

You gave him a thumbs up before turning your head away. Abbacchio's gaze was burning holes into your back. Giorno nodded and looked away. A small smile appearing on his face, every time you said his name it did something to his heart.

You sat through the conversation about food and thought about what you wanted. A smile on your face now that you had fully calmed down and gotten over your embarrassment.

The squid ink pasta that Mista suggested sounds nice, though I'd like some comfort food right about now.

"Be quiet! Don't let your guard down the mission isn't finished!

Bruno's loud voice startled you and you made the boat rock a bit. He paused for only a moment to look at you as you steadied yourself. His attention was drawn away from you and to Giorno who stepped forward.

"I volunteer to take Trish to the top bell tower."

You looked to the side and saw Trish out of the turtle and looking at you. The two of you remained silent as you looked at each other. Abbacchio yelled at Giorno in the background. The mood slowly dropping. You didn't want Trish to leave, you weren't ready to say goodbye just yet, Abbacchio was yelling, the vibes weren't the best.

"I want Y/n to be my bodyguard."

It took you a moment to process what she had just said.

Hah, what? Did she just say she wanted me?

All yes switched to you and you look at her, not taking your eyes off her even though you felt the looks of everyone on you.

"Trish that's not a good idea."

You watched her frown at you while everyone else on the boat remained quiet. The group was watching this play out.

"No. I want you to take me to the top of the bell tower."

Her voice was hard and sterner. This was a situation that was time-sensitive and needed to be done by the right person. You weren't that person. You wouldn't be able to live with yourself if something happened to her when you were supposed to be her bodyguard and protect her.

"No. I won't take you."

She sat down on the boat and crossed her arms. You were sat on the other end of the boat, Fugo and Narancia had moved from their seats so they weren't in the middle. You both just stared at each other, she was looking at you hard while you tried to keep your gaze normal, you didn't want to look at her harshly.

"Trish this part of the mission needs to be done by someone who is strong has the experience that's needed, and fit for the job. You have to go with Bucciarati."

Trish stood up and had her fists clenched and you followed her lead and stood up. Both of you walked to the middle of the boat in sync.

"No."

You frowned and looked into her eyes, she wasn't planning on budging but you saw something else in her eyes it was fear, sadness. You needed to say something that would get her to go with Bruno. She was mad, on the verge of upset and you were neutral, on the verge of sadness.

"You need to get off the boat and go with Bucciarati. It's for your safety and your dad is waiting for you up there right now."

She was getting upset and you looked at Bruno and then back at Trish. She took another step forward and you bit the inside of your cheek. You laced your arms around her and pulled her into a hug. She hugged you tightly and put her face in the crook of your neck. A small sniffle came from her and you felt your heart sink. Your voice was sad and gentle and you looked down.

"I'm sorry Trish."

She lifted her head and looked at your eyes. Before she had a chance to respond you lifted her up and walked to Bruno. She started struggling but you kept hugging her. It felt as if the walk to Bruno was made to hurt you.

"Put me down!"

Her words made your heart sink and you got her to Bruno, you set her down and Bruno managed to grab her hand before she could run back onto the boat and back to you.

"Let go!"

You noticed a metallic flavor in your mouth, you were biting the inside of your cheek so hard you drew blood. The team watched silently and looked away. You watched her, she looked heartbroken, and you swallowed thickly.

"Trish I don't want you to get hurt. Bucciarati will keep you safe. That's what matters. Please it'll all be ok."

She stopped struggling and looked at you and you looked at her, neither of you wanted to look away. Your eyes showed sadness and pain as did hers. You saw Bruno give you looked that was stern but grateful. You smiled weakly at them and turned around. Walking to the back of the boat where you were sitting previously.

I don't want you to leave

You slowly walked past the rest of the team to your spot.

I don't want to leave you, I want to stay

Trish looked at your back as you walked away.

She walked with Bruno into the church and you laid down on the empty bench. Looking up at the sky, it was beautiful. The boat was silent and no one uttered a word until the silence got too unbearable.

"Hey, Nara?"

Narancia perked up at the nickname and looked at you. The others were grateful for the break of silence. They knew it wasn't an appropriate time to get jealous of Narancia or Trish for that matter seeing as she was always the one to be closest to you.

"Yeah?"

You stayed quiet for a moment.

So many emotions in just a short span of time, happiness, horniness, sadness. Can't I stick with one? Please? I'd prefer happiness over others.

"Could you make me smile? All you have to do is smile, that always works."

You turned your head to look at him. He was already grinning happily with a bold red on his cheeks and he rubbed the back of his neck. A smile slowly started to spread over your lips and looked back at the sky.

"Hey, Giorno. I've been thinking... maybe it's not so bad being in a gang. I'd love to stay loyal to the boss, for Trish. I'd get to see you all every day, I could still study in my free time. It sounds nice."

The team smiled and started to talk again. Giorno smiled too, but he bit the inside of his cheek. He told you about his dream, but he never told you about betraying the boss. He started to realize he should have told you everything from the start. It was just going to get messier.
