《Theirs》Chapter 25

...
"I uh... kinda-ran-away-from-
home." He mumbled quickly.
"You did what?!" I yelled at him. "Are you out of your mind?! Why did you do that?!"
"Well, for starters, our parents didn't want me to go work outside our town." He started and I sighed loudly.
So the usual.
"And?" I urged him to continue.
"Mom wanted me to marry a daughter from her friend's friend. I don't even know who she is." He added in annoyance.
Oh. So double the usual. Nice.
"So they basically did the same thing they did to Kate." Lyla concluded.
"Yup." Matthew confirmed.
"Oh how lovely." She said sarcastically.
I felt a tap on my shoulder, so I turned around and saw three confused faces.
"What are you talking about? What same thing?" Draco asked.
"My parents didn't want me to go to college and get a job. They wanted to marry me off right after high school to a dad's friend's son, but I ran away right after I graduated." I explained.
"Well I'm glad you did that. Imagine us having to get rid of your husband." Draco joked.
I glared at him.
"Why would you need to get rid of him?" Matthew asked in confusion.
Ah shit.
"It's just-"
But Kayda's yelling interrupted me.
"Guys!" She yelled from the hallway. "What are you doing? We have all of this to move and you're just stan-"
She stopped talking the moment her eyes landed on Matthew. Her face lit up and her eyes sparkled. I looked at Matthew and he had the same expression.
What's happening to them?
Kayda quickly ran to us and stopped right in front of Matthew.
"Hi! I'm Kayda." She said cheerfully and extended her hand toward him.

"I'm Matthew?" He said in confusion and shook her hand.
"My younger brother." I added, because I don't think Matthew's brain can currently form complete sentences.
Lyla nudged me and I looked at her only to see her looking at me with a knowing smirk and wiggling eyebrows.
So she's thinking the same thing.
Kayda whipped her head towards me and her eyes grew in surprise.
"Really?!" She squealed excitedly and started to jump.
I looked at her in confusion.
"What?" I asked.
But she ignored my question and pulled Matthew in a hug. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped.
What is she doing?!
"Uhh..." Matthew said awkwardly.
Kayda pulled away and placed her hands on Matthew's cheeks. She looked at him for a few seconds and then turned her head to look at us.
"Uh Kayda... Maybe you should let the poor boy g-"
"He's my mate." She said out of nowhere.
There was a silence for a few seconds and then Matthew started to talk.
"What does she me-"
"WHAT?!" All of us yelled at the same time, interrupting him.
You have got to be kidding me...
"A-are you sure?" I asked.
"Well, I have to light him up to know for sure, but I think he is." She said with a grin.
"Oh hell no! I'm not going through that again!" Lyla immediately protested and I internally agreed with her.
Definitely.
"Um... What are you guys talking about?" Matthew said with an awkward smile.
I sighed loudly.
"Why don't we all go inside and explain everything." Tharion suggested and we immediately agreed.
We walked inside one by one and headed toward the living room.
...
"You're fucking with me aren't you?" Matthew said in disbelief.

"I'm afraid we're not Mat." I said.
"Everything you heard is true. We can show you if you want." Blaze confirmed.
Kayda immediately batted her eyes at Matthew and changed them to her dragon eyes. I facepalmed and groaned.
This girl...
"Why is she so eager and excited?" I mumbled to Lyla.
"I mean, these three did the same thing and they're siblings, so it was kind of expected." She said and pointed at our mates.
She's not wrong though.
I guess it's true when they say blood is thicker than water.
Matthew was looking at Kayda's eyes in astonishment for a few moments. Then he looked at me.
"What?" I asked.
"So everything Ben said was true?" He asked although he already knew the answer to that.
I nodded my head.
"Wow..."
Then I remembered something important.
"So um... Since we're moving to the lair, what are we going to do about Matthew?" I asked everyone.
"Of course, he's going with us. I'm not leaving my mate alone." Kayda said with determination and hugged Matthew possessively.
And Matthew's face showed just how much he liked what she was currently doing.
This idiot.
I looked at Blaze, Tharion and Draco for answers.
"I mean, if it turns out he's her mate, then it goes without saying he can stay in the lair. But if he's not, I'm afraid we won't be able to let him in because of the rest of the hord." Blaze replied.
"Yes. Because you and Lyla are our mates, they can't oppose. Not that they would, but you know what I mean. But they can be against the idea of an unrelated human living in the lair." Tharion added.
"Then let's go right now and check if he's my mate." Kayda said and quickly got up.
"Uhh... I don't think that's a good idea Kayda. You hatched 20 years ago. You know that's not enough for you to learn to control your fire." Draco said skeptically.
My eyes widened at that statement.
Say what now?! How is that not long enough?!
"But if he's my mate it won't hurt him." She immediately protested.
"I'm sorry Kayda, but if you still can't control your fire, I can't let you light Matthew up. If it turns out he's not your mate, you could end up killing him. And I don't think, after that, I could ever look at you the way I do right now." I decided to interrupt their conversation.
"But..." She said sadly and looked at Draco for help.
"Sorry sis, but I'm with them. You know how dangerous it is." Draco said with a sad smile.
Her head dropped down in defeat. I felt so bad for her, but I also can't risk Matthew's life. He's the only brother I have and I'm not about to sacrifice his life just like that.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" She asked sadly and looked at Matthew.
Matthew nodded and then they walked outside.
...
