《STAGED》Twenty-Nine

"Kade, we're—"

The curtain to the bunk is yanked open.

"Well, isn't this precious?"

I open my eyes and move to roll on my back but can't. Something—no, someone—is spooning me. I crane my neck and find Kade's body pressed against my back. During the night, he took off his shirt and wrapped his arm around my waist. I lift my head a little higher and discover Seb smiling at us. My cheeks warm as a blush spreads over them, and I drop to the pillow, hiding the look on my face.

I'm not ashamed getting caught in Kade's bunk; we're just two people sleeping. Okay, one of us has intertwined his body with the other person, but I don't think it's on purpose. Apparently, Kade is a cuddler.

"Morning, Seb." I try to play it off like it's not a big deal.

"Morning, A.J. Kade, don't you want to wish me good morning?" he asks.

Kade nuzzles his face into my hair, and his breath tickles on the back of my neck, and every inch of my skin rises in little bumps. "No, I'm sleeping."

The other members of the group are waking up, and the small area fills with voices. Actually, it's more like tired grunting as they grab their belongings and move to exit the bus. I'm familiar with the routine from being on the road with Asher.

I shake Kade's arm and say, "Come on, you should go with the rest of the band."

This only causes him to hold me tighter.

"Come on, Kade. I've got to pee, and I want to use a real toilet," I beg.

"Kade, let the girl up before she pisses on you," Oscar says.

Kade groans, rolls off the bunk, and stands.

"Well, come on," he says, grabbing his discarded shirt from the foot of the bed and puts it on.

"If I stand up, I won't be able to wait," I explain.

I hate going to the bathroom on the bus. It reminds me of a plane lavatory, and I try to avoid those at all costs. There's just something weird about being in motion and peeing at the same time.

"All right then, let's go." Kade slips on a pair of Nikes.

"Well, I have to wait for you guys to go in first. Just hurry, please."

Kade slides me across the bed and pulls my legs out, so I'm on my way to standing. "Are you kidding me, Ari? You have to piss, get out of the bed and let's go."

"But the fans, what if they see me?"

I dance around, looking for my shoes.

"Who cares?" Eagin says from behind me.

"You mean it's okay if I go in with you?" Asher's management would've told me to wait for him to get to his room before I could go inside. Then I'd have to carry my luggage from the far end of a parking lot into the hotel by myself. There couldn't be any speculations that I was with him. My choices were to use the bathroom on the bus or walk with a full bladder and dragging thirty pounds of stuff, praying I made it inside.

Since I have the go-ahead, I sprint out of the bus, jumping down the stairs, and rush past the small gathering of fans waiting for their idols at the front entrance of the hotel. They holler questions at me, but I ignore them and rush inside. I head through the lobby where other members of the staff are checking in and go into the public restroom. When I return, the sound of screams penetrates the closed doors, and everyone stands around the front desk waiting for their key cards.

Kade stands next to me and with pure disdain in his voice says, "Don't tell me that asshole wouldn't let you walk into a hotel with him."

I shrug. "His management did all they could to protect the fans. I couldn't be seen with him unless it was near home so they could write me off as just a visiting friend."

"That's complete shit. You do realize that, right?" he says, taking his room card from Mike.

I had that very thought thousands of times over the past two years, but what could I do? His management was there with the interest of Asher's future at heart. He would have walked into the hotel with me if they would've let him, or at least, I thought so. The heavy weight of realizing I didn't know my boyfriend threatens to crush me.

"I don't want to talk about him," I say with a forced smile.

Kade squeezes my shoulder and walks past me to follow security to his room. The gesture is sweet but full of pity. Poor Ariella, her boyfriend is a douchebag. The truth is—I didn't know any better. It's not like I ever met a famous person until Asher. For me, it's just the way things are when you have adoring fans. I thought I had it all figured out, but now, I know how wrong I was.
