Saturday
"I promise, Madison had the 24 hour bug too mom, it's no big deal" I tried covering up my hangover. I took a shower before everyone else and brushed my teeth.
"You don't have a fever" she looked at me oddly.
"It'll be gone by time we go to church tomorrow" I told her.
"Okay, but just drink a lot of liquids, I need to pay bills and go shopping" she kissed my forehead and left.
My door was open and I saw my brother come into my room with his arms crossed.
I glared at him, "What?"
"You have a hangover" he narrowed his eyes at me.
"No, I have a 24 hour bug" I crossed my arms.
"I'm not dumb" he stated.
"That's what your test scores say" I said.
He rolled his eyes, "Better be nice to me or I'll tell mom her little, innocent, precious, princess went to a party last night and has a hangover and not a '24 hour bug' okay little sis?" He smirked.
My mouth was wide open, "Are you trying to blackmail me?" I glared as I was laying in my bed.
"Yeah, now go do my laundry and make me some pancakes or else I'll tell mom" he sang as he went back into his room. This is what it's like to have an older brother ladies and gentlemen.
"Snitch!" I yelled as I got up. I got an instant headache.
I walked down stairs and threw his clothes in the washer.
Then I got the pancake mix out and made the batter.
I poured the batter onto the hot frying pan.
My phone dinged and the screen lit up.
I had a Facebook notification. I opened the app and saw I had a friend request.

I just stared at the name.
Darren Caine.
My finger was hovering over the decline, but then I clicked accept.
I smelt something burning. I quickly looked at the skillet and saw the pancake smoking.
I grabbed a spatula and removed it from the skillet.
It was too late because the smoke alarms were going off. Great.
My headache got worse. I quickly opened up the windows and doors, hopefully stopping the smoke alarms. Which it did, thank goodness.
Daniel came down and looked at me, "I asked you to make pancakes, not burn the house down"
"Shut up, do you want me to 'accidently' pour bleach all over your clothes?" I smiled.
He narrowed his eyes, "You wouldn't"
"I would"

Sunday
I was putting on a light pink pencil skirt that went above my knees and a white blouse tucked in.
We were getting ready for church and thank goodness Daniel helped me cure my hangover.
I put some black flats on as I pulled my hair in a half up, half down ponytail.
I ran downstairs to see my mom and older brother dressed.
Ever since the party, I've been wanting to tell my mom I did it.
But I never found the courage to.
"Come on princess" she said to me as they were heading out the door.
I followed them to the car and got in the backseat. I still haven't told Madison what happened either.
I stared out the window. I hate how careless I was at the party and drank. If my brother and I didn't get into an argument then none of this would've happened.
I just feel so weird now. I lost my first kiss, and my innocents that night.
I'm regretting all of that now.
"Maisie?" My mom called, "are you okay?" She asked looking back at me.

We were already at the church, my brother got out.
"Yeah, just tired" I lied.
She smiled and got out of the car.
I mentally groaned as I got out too.
We saw people going into church, from toddlers to elders all dressed in nice clothing.
When we reached the opened doors my mom sat in the back row of pews.
I sat next to her then saw they had free donuts, orange juice, and coffee out.
"I'm going to get us donuts" I told my mom as I headed to the table of refreshments.
I grabbed a napkin and stacked two glazed donuts on them. I tried to grab two cups for the orange juice until a hand grabbed them for me.
"Thank you" I looked up to see Darren, "oh, uh hey" I said awkwardly.
"I didn't know you went to this church" he said as he poured orange juice in the two cups.
"I didn't even know you went to church"
He looked at me and smirked, "Wow, aren't you sassy"
"Why are you talking to me?" I finally cut to the chase.
His smirk faltered, "Okay, so at the party-"
"No. That's the past, it doesn't matter anymore" I walked away with just my donuts.
I went back to my mom and gave her one.
"I thought you went to get orange juice?" She asked as she took a donut.
"They ran out" I lied.
I looked over at the refreshment table and saw Darren flirting with another girl. Unbelievable.

The Simulacrum
"He who fights with harem tropes should see to it that he himself does not become a harem protagonist. And if you gaze for long into a narrative, the narrative gazes also into you." --- Friedrich Nietzsche (probably?) How would you react if one day you woke up inside an environment running on tropes and clichés? For allegedly average high-schooler Leonard Dunning, this question became quite relevant when one day he woke up in a pristine city on a strange island in the middle of the Atlantic, without any memories, surrounded by classmates who are barely more than characterless placeholders, and with a classic indecisive harem protagonist and his impossibly beautiful love interests for friends. That would be hard to deal with already, yet his investigation into the tropes governing the world, trying to avoid harem shenanigans, and his odd blend of outside-context knowledge, unique abilities, and a penchant for causing trouble wherever he goes ends up dragging him into the center of the action anyway. Disclaimer: This is a tongue-in-cheek, slice of life romantic comedy, with occasional sprinkles of combat and mystery to spice things up. Please do not expect a straight up deconstruction beyond some in-universe meta-commentary by the characters.
