《The Last Set || Sugawara x Reader ||》Old Beginning

Sitting outside on the bench, I take in a fresh breath of air as the wind blew through my hair. I wrapped up my fingers in a gauze and notice the dried blood accompanying it. The sun dipped lower over the horizon as the trees swayed, executing a dance. Picking on my bandages, I wipe my brow and sink lower into my seat. Tilting my head back, I close my eyes and rub my palms together.
As the days went on, the harder I thought about volleyball season. How it was over for me. Maybe it was over for Karasuno as well...
The tournament commenced shortly after the mayhem that happened a week ago. However, police were involved and school districts had to discuss the matter. There was a debate whether Karasuno was capable of continuing, even though they were caught in an act of fellony. Fukurodani and Nekoma were involved too. Aoba Johsai's reputation has gone amuck from the news as well.
I remember it so clearly now
An imagine of beating random men in masks to a pulp with my boyfriend. Felt like a deranged dream. The mansion hallways grew longer and wider. I remember him running after his sister, the fear in me wasn't ready to let go.
"Tooru"
The voice caught my attention as I peer through my squinted eyes. Looking down at his shoes, my eyes slowly pan upwards; I couldn't help but smile in relief. Standing up abruptly, I meet Hajime and entrap him in my arms.
"Thank goodness you're okay." I said into his broad shoulder.
"Ha. Idiot. Stop overreacting. It was just a check up again." Hajime explained, with a hint of fear in his voice. He held me tightly, grasping onto my worn out shirt.
"I know but still... don't scare me like that" I murmured.
We sat on the bench together, clinking our tin cans of soda. We were at the outside of the hospital, where our friends remained. The others were checked right after the incident, such as Tanaka and Noya who were affected by the smoke. Toma, Bokuto, Hajime and I with minor scratches. Cuts and bruises to be exact. Some PTSD counselling for Yams, Yachi and Tsukki. As for the cats, Kenma and Kuroo had a few days off from practice and school to recollect their thoughts.
"Everyone is almost back to normal." I say quietly to myself as I took a sip of my cherry soda.
Hajime nodded slowly but his eyes sunk to the ground with a grim expression.
"Not everyone..." he mumbled into his drink. His thumb grazes over the lip of the can in apprehension.
I scoot over closer to him and place a hand over his knee. His brown eyes meet mine.
"Mika... how is she?" I ask with the answer already in mind. Hajime slouches over in his seat and takes another sip.
"She's... different" he said slowly, sighing into the air
"I figured." I solemnly added, "Must be hard"
"Yeah. It really is. Hard for me to watch her like this. She's been crying ever since." his gaze softens as he stares off into the distance.
I agreed with a small nod because I found it difficult to carry on the conversation.
"I wonder who's going to win nationals" I state, changing the subject to ease Hajime's mind.
"Hmm. I wonder too. I mean it's over for us, but it's not too late for them, no?" he displayed a minuscule smile on his face.
"Let's go home." Hajime says as he offers a hand to me. I take it and we walk hand in hand to the car.

"The tragic death of Udai Tenma, also known as Shimizu Taiyo was found in a storage locker, within the mansion he formerly lived in with his family. The famous Tiny Giant of the volleyball world, who was undercover for quite some time, has finally revealed his whereabouts. His twin sister, Udai Rin, has been found knocked unconscious beside his body with the murder weapon beside her. The crime scene is still under investigation as other men dressed in suits were also found unconscious throughout the mansion. Other parties that were involved were surprisingly teenagers who infiltrated the multimillion dollar home with the help of each other. They were all taken in by the police and questioned at the station a week ago. Three other culprits within the scene were also taken account for: detective Daisuke Kageyama, Kindaichi Yutaru, Kunimi Akira. They were also taken in for further questioning. Now here we interview some of the teenagers who experience it all first hand:
'What do you have to say about the events that happened within the mansion?' she asked as she pointed the mic to tiny blonde girl,
'It... it was... it wasn't our fault. We were just trying to h-help' Yachi swallowed her words as she shivered on the spot
'What are your thoughts on the Udai Family?" she questioned another person,
'Hi mom! Look I'm on TV!" Bokuto gleamed as he waved frantically to the camera. The news reporter sighed to the mic and told the camera man to cut.
'What do you have to say about the Udai scandal and the money laundering?' she asks the pudding head,
'I have no comments.' Kenma said nonchalantly. The news reported stared blankly as Kenma walked away without another word.
There you have it folks. The vault within the mansion has the heaviest security as expected from a well-off family. Workers are trying to pry the vault open with power tools, but with no luck. As of now, the Udai Family vault will remain a mystery. This is Midori Kato, signing off from TV Tokyo. Stay safe, stay happy and stay tuned!"
I turned off the TV and sat in my seat, slumped over.
There was no need to listen to that garbage. Plus, I hated the attention.
"Why did you turn it off?" (F/N) croaked.
I didn't realize she was awake. Her eyes were filled with fatigue. Her hair messy and tangled. Her frame was small as she barely picked on the food tray in front of her. She stared blankly at the TV with vacant eyes. It has been a week since the accident. She had to be placed in the ICU where no one could touch her. Her mom and sister were standing outside the glass, waiting for her to get better. My heart was tugging at me in all directions, but I never really understood. Everything has changed.
"You don't have to listen to that" I say solmnely.
I take a quick glance at her face. Lifeless and dull. Nothing brought her joy and as much as it pained me to watch, I wish she would get back to her usual self. Hopeful, brave, driven. She lost everything again and being in that mansion took a toll on everyone. I had to stop gaming for a while, and that says a lot.
"Kenma, why do you stay?" she asks suddenly. I peek my head upwards and give her a sad smile.
"Why would I leave, (F/N)?" I ask. She's silent afterwards as she picks on her nails.

"I know it hurts you a lot... to see me like this" she shyly admitted. She tucked a loose strand behind her ear, but continued to stare down at her hands.
I didn't know what to say to that because it's true, but I'm not that kind of friend to just leave. Just as I open my mouth, Dr. Azumane comes in with his son. Asahi holds up flowers and a get well soon card.
"(F/N), how are we doing today?"
She remained silent, as if she didn't know how to answer that question. The silence grew longer until I said,
"I guess I should leave you with the doctor (F/N)? I won't be long, I promise."
I get up from my chair and assist (F/N) into her wheelchair. She makes a pained face as I lower her down, but dismisses it by waving her hand. I hug her quickly and leave the room.
It was too much for me
~
"You can't play volleyball anymore, sorry (F/N)"
The same words resonated in your head like a distant memory. He says to you with remorse but you know he'll never understand. The doctor does his daily inspection, checking for bruises and bleeding of the sort. Prodding you with his stethoscope and ticking off a check list. Your legs were stiff and you couldn't feel the doctors hands as he grazed his fingers over them.
"Can you feel this (F/N)?"
You close your eyes slowly, giving the doctor your unsaid answer. It was a blur. His words didn't register within you.
Felt forever ago, yet I'm in the same position where I started. No volleyball. No dad. No purpose. This time, it'll remain like this.
"We'll I'll get the nurse to assist you if need anything" he says before he walks off to talk to another patient.
The room you were staying at was a private room given to be an anonymous donor. Not sure where the money came from, but you were too tired to care. Kenma left some chocolates for you to eat and you had a feeling that he won't be coming back until tomorrow. Mika came earlier, as always but, it was getting more difficult for her to take in the news. It pained you to see her like this.
Fiddling with the hospital sheets, you stare out the window and wondered what my life would be like if you never met Suga. The thought of him brought a chill to your spine. Your grip tighter to the sheets and close your eyes.
Suga...
Determined to get out of the depressing hospital bed, you throw over the sheets and carry your heavy legs over the bedside. You let them dangle as a slight wooziness overcame. Nonetheless, you wanted to get out of here. The whole week, the nurse would yell at you for getting out of bed by yourself. It was a habit but it became difficult as the week progressed.
"Can't walk anymore" the doctor said to your mom and sister, making them breakdown in tears.
You for one, didn't cry surprisingly.
Maybe I was just numb to crying.
Taking a deep breath, you hold onto the bedside railings and heave downwards to the wheelchair below. Your breath hitched as you hit the chair but you clench your fists to ease the pain. The infection that carried through your body from the surgery didn't heal properly from the stress.
You pulled yourself over in the wheelchair and wheel over to the bed side. Pulling out the first drawer, you retrieve the yellow play book and started writing. You didn't know what you were writing, but it helped with your indefinite emotions.
"The infection spread to her spine, causing her to lose senses in her lower regions" this sentence echoed in your head as you write: Paralyzed.
Staring down at your notebook, you flip to the parts Suga wrote down for you. In the tiniest writing, he writes: "I hope you find this one helpful (F/N). We'll use this as a secret weapon when we're playing against Seijoh"
He circles you on the 2D example of the volleyball court and puts a small happy face beside it.
"like the sun because you're in the centre heh" he wrote beneath.
Like the sun...
Closing the book, you shove it between your legs and move past your bed and into the doorway. The bustle of nurses attending call bells filled the hallway, giving you chance to escape from your room. Pushing the wheels forward, you move down the hallway until you reach the room. His room.
Suga.
You always passed by this hallway, but for some reason, you were too afraid to go inside. He also had a private room which contained a closed door with his name. This time, the door was slightly ajar, allowing you to peer inside and watch him from afar. His hair was a bit longer now with dark circles under his eyes. Several machines surrounded his bed, making all sorts of noises. His head turns slightly and you make eye contact.
"Please, come in." he said weakly.
Your heart beats out of it's chest as you held onto the door handle. With a shaky breath you hear,
"Please (F/N)." he said softly
Pushing the door, you wheeled yourself in and gaze upwards. His arm was in a cast, along with his head in bandages. His leg was also mangled up and swollen. He had faded bruises on his face, yet he remained smiling. You couldn't stare for too long.
It hurts too much. Suga
"I don't bite" he laughs slightly. His laugh was strained as he slowly sat up in his bed.
You didn't say anything. At a loss for words from the thought of him being broken beyond repair because it was your fault. You grip tighter to your wheelchair handles and refuse to look at his face.
It's my fault
"Please don't cry (F/N)" he spoke softly, "I haven't seen you since. I wanted to visit you but the nurse said you didn't want to see me"
Speechless. Is what I am. I died everyday from not seeing him, but this heavy guilt shrouded me. He's like this because of me. I'm the problem. He'd be better off with someone else.
You cried silently as the thought of being without him scared you. But the longer he stayed, the more hurt he becomes.
I lost him so many times. I just keep on hurting him. He'd be happier with someone else. I can't even walk anymore. I need to let him go.
"S-suga" I stuttered my first word. Before you can muster out another word, he forms a symbol with his hands.
The unspoken 'I love you' sign we made for each other. He holds it up to you and you blink the tears away. He moves his hand side to side and a weak smile displayed on his lips. Wheeling forward, you hold up the same symbol and press it against his hand. He leans forward and we press our foreheads together,
"I've been waiting for you, (F/N)"

She'll go all-in, guns blazing. But when the smoke clears there may be nothing left but a stranger's past and a lonely future. --- 'Kind's Kiss' is a light, modern-day fantasy, easy on the magic, heavy on the snark. Though complete it is still a work in progress. One reviewer described it as 'Buffy meets Sabrina, as done by Tarantino'. I'm still not sure if I should consider that a compliment or hire a hitman :-)
