《The Last Set || Sugawara x Reader ||》A Love Like This

The blue and yellow volleyball soars above the net and in the split second I had, I needed to save this ball. Life or Death.

Fifth set. This is it or it's game over. LET ME FINISH THIS FOR (F/N)!

"SUGA-SAN!"

I dove for the ball at an impossible angle and as it makes contact with my arm, I yell,

"CHANCE BALL!!!"

The ball drives upwards in a flurry of yellow and blue, naked to the human eye. It's trajectory was perfect for Kageyama to set it up. Just when I was about to stand up, I could feel my knees wobble and my ankle screaming in excruciating pain. My body wasn't listening to me.

MY ANKLE! No, I must continue for (F/N)! There's no time to be in pain right now!

"KAGEYAMA! MINUS TEMPO!" I screech from the gym floor. I wanted to be as useful to my teammates, because that's who I am. That's my purpose.

Even if I can't stand up for myself right now, let them finish it! For (F/N)'s sake!

"HINATA!" Kageyama screams and Hinata jumps at his peak. His summit.

Hinata lets out a battle cry, as he hits the volleyball in a fast motion. So fast that Shiratorizawa couldn't receive the ball on time. It bounds off Ushijima's arm, but it spins in the opposite direction towards the back of the court. It lands outside of the end line and the refs raise their red flags. The whistle blows. The crowd is silenced. The game is over.

Running up to Asahi and Daichi, I let out a cry of relief.

"For (F/N)!" Asahi screams and Daichi chants the same. I was trembling on the spot, unable to open my mouth to speak. I was in pain but it didn't matter. We won.

We get to go to Nationals. We get to play one more time. (F/N), if you're watching, I want you to be proud of what you've accomplished. What a team you've built. Without you, this wouldn't have been possible. Thank you and I will keep saying thank you over and over again, because I love you.

Wiping the mixture of tears and sweat away from my face, Daichi pats me on the back and says,

"I bet (F/N) is cheering at her hospital bed right now. Good job out there Suga."

"I really hope so." I say breathless, as my throat became dry from the adrenaline.

"Let's line up?" Asahi says and we nod in agreement.

Lining up to face my school, we all bow and let out:

"THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!"

I notice the spectators were crying in joy and I catch a glimpse of Daichi holding up the charm to Michimiya. I grin ear to ear and as badly as I wanted to tease him, I didn't want to ruin their moment.

I can't wait to see (F/N). I miss her so much.

'Black bird singing in the dead of night. Take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life. You were only waiting for this moment to arise~'

Turning your head while lying in bed, you watch the former coach play his guitar and sing a Beatles song.

Black bird, heh how relevant.

"Ukai-san. I didn't know you knew how to play guitar." you say weakly as you tuck your hair behind you ears, "My dad loves that song"

"Well kiddo, your dad has a good taste in music" he grins, making you grin along with him.

You just finished watching the game and you were crying the whole time. Before. During. And after. You were crying so much the nurses were even concerned.

"Ukai-san, your stress test is ready for you." a nurse called out from the doorway. He hands his guitar to you and says,

"Here, play for me while I'm gone."

You take it willingly and strum the chords to your liking. You didn't really know how to play, but your dad would play for you sometimes. He did force you and Kiyoko to take music lessons when you were younger. Humming to yourself, your eye catches the TV again as it recaps the awards ceremony. Trophies and medallions were given to your team and you kept smiling until your cheeks hurt. You notice Suga holding up the trophy and waving side to side the sign language you shared. You placed the guitar down at the foot of your bed and returned the 'I love you'. Placing it to your heart, you sigh and catch Sakusa staring.

"Cute." he said with a straight face. You couldn't tell from his full expression because he was wearing a face mask, but you guess he was in awe.

You smile back at him and continue playing the guitar as promised.

"Sakusa-san, are you ready to be discharged?" another nurse called out. Sakusa lazily swung his feet down to the cold hospital floor. He was already dressed in outside clothes, ready to head out.

"See ya (F/N). Hopefully we'll meet again." he says in a monotone voice. Though he was a stoic person, he was indeed kind and caring as a hospital roomie. He'd sneak in extra snacks for you because you couldn't get up yourself. Your scar was killing your back.

"See you at Nationals" you say as you wave goodbye. He walks out with the nurse leaving just the two of you behind. You and Korai Hoshiumi.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" you call out as to the small boy with white hair.

"Great! Going to get the cast off soon! You?"

Peeping under the hospital gown you notice fresh blood was seeping through the bandages. The infection was still there and you were trying your best not to show how much pain you were in.

"Not quite ready to leave." you say softly as you turn in your bed for a more comfortable position.

"Do you need help?" he says behind the curtain. He hobbles over with his crutches and comes to your bed side.

He reminds me of Hinata. So feisty, yet so kind when it comes to girls.

"Ah Korai, you didn't have to come over here. You'll hurt yourself again." you smile weakly but he moves over to the other side of the bed to check your bandages.

"You don't have to hide it." he murmured as he looked at the bloody bandages. You blush as you cover yourself with the blanket.

"Hide what?" you mumbled into your pillow.

"Hide that you're in pain." he stated. A tear slipped out of your eye and you nodded at his response.

"I'm not in pain because of that. I'm in pain because I haven't seen my boyfriend in so long. And I did this stupid thing so impulsively. Giving away my kidney to save his mom. I did it because I didn't want him to lose someone he loved. I did it for my own selfish intentions. Like how I lost my dad... Suga refused and said he'd break up with me if I did. So I don't know if he's even my boyfriend anymore" your voice cracked as Korai handed you a tissue.

"Of course I'm your boyfriend. I'll always be your boyfriend."

Turning around slowly, your eyes met the kindest, most alluring hazel eyes you've fallen in love with.

"Suga."

He runs up to your bedside and takes hold of your hands. Korai smiles at him and returns back to his hospital bed. He closes the curtains to give you both privacy.

"Suga, I'm so sorry. I should've thought first before doing something this irrational." you sobbed, but he held your hands tighter and shook his head. He kissed your fingers and gazed at you with longing eyes.

"No, don't be. It's my fault for yelling at you. I won't do that again, I promise. I'll never break up with you." he closed his eyes tightly and leaned forward, his head meeting your collar bone, "I was so scared. Scared of losing you."

You hook your hands at the back of his neck and pull him closer to you. His hands were pinned to your shoulders

"How selfish of me. You saved my mom and I took you for granted. I'm the one who should be sorry." he cried. You feel his tears on your gown. You hold on tighter to him, afraid he'd disappear if you let go.

"(F/N)?" a familiar voice called out. Suga wipes his tears and turns around. He smiles brightly at your best friend.

"Mika!" you say as she runs to you, dropping everything she was holding at the door.

"I'm so sorry! I'm a horrible friend. I should've been jealous of you or yelled at you. I never meant what I said. You deserve so much better than me." she started to tear up and you grab her by the wrist and pull her closer into an embrace

"I don't want better Mika, I only want you." you sighed into her long dark hair. You could feel her heaving into her chest.

The rest of the team trickled in one by one as they all couldn't bombard the room all at once. Endless stories of how Shiratorizawa was defeated and how Suga helped the team with his brilliant tactics. In the end, they all couldn't believe they won.

"Korai, there's someone I'd like you to meet." you say as he peeks out through the curtains, "Hinata, this is Korai"

The two small giants approached each other carefully. Korai stood tall as he could (to the best of his ability with the cast on), to be at eye level with the small ginger.

"Hinata, why are you staring at him like that?" Yamaguchi asked as he held a lollipop in one hand and Yachi's hand in the other.

"Because I feel like... if I look away, I'll LOSE!" they eyed at each other intensively as the rest of the team had a good laugh at the two dimwits. A few hours past and you had a good laugh and cry over the team. Your mom, sister, and Suga's parents came as well. Suga's mom was crying out of gratitude, making you cry along with her.

"I can't thank you enough (F/N)." she sobbed and tears trickled down your cheeks. Taking her hand in yours you smile down at her and say,

"It's my pleasure. I know how much you mean to Suga."

As the commotion died down, it was getting late and the team was ready to head home. Even Korai was discharged and you exchange numbers before you say your goodbyes. Ukai-senpai was also finally ready to leave the hospital as well.

"Take care you lovebirds. I'll see you next time." he swings his jacket around his broad shoulders and salutes the two of you before leaving with his possessions. He closes the door on the way out and you sigh in relief.

Finally, alone. All this attention was making me sleepy.

"Do you need anything? How are you feeling? Are you hungry?" he asked several questions out of concern and you grin widely at the silver haired boy. He limps over to close the curtains and returns to you in a hurry. He acted as if blinking was out of the question. Like you'd disappear out of his sight. He was afraid to lose you again.

"Are you okay Suga? Your ankle looks a bit swollen." You notion down at his right ankle but he denies his pain,

"Oh, it's nothing compared to what you're going through." he dismissed.

"Maybe that's why they call you the mom of the group. You care too much for others, sometimes you forget about yourself." you commented heartedly. He chuckles at your observation as he leans forward to plant a kiss on your forehead.

"That's why I love you." he mumbled

He wraps his arms around your shoulders and your head rests on his chest. You suddenly wince in pain and he lays you back down on the bed in panic, "Sorry sorry! You must be in a lot of pain."

Feeling the scratchy hospital sheets beneath you, you laugh at his carefulness. He was afraid you'd break into a million pieces.

"It's nothing compared to waiting for you. Not being able to touch you or be with you when I was in the ICU. Separated by a glass wall. You were so close, yet so far away. That was far beyond painful." you explained moving your head side to side. His gaze softens from your words.

You roll over slightly and pat the mattress. As if he read your mind, Suga takes off his shoes and fills in the vacant space. You were facing the opposite direction as he hugs you from behind.

Suga slowly slides his hand down your arm, until he reaches yours. He interlocks his fingers with yours and sighs into your hair.

"I'm so glad you're okay." he whispered into your hair, "I missed you so much."

He gently gathers your hair to one side, allowing access to your neck. He showers you in kisses as he makes a trail from the back of your ear, down over your collar bone, and to the tip of your shoulder. The sensation was sending chills down your spine. Turning around, you slowly face him and mumble into the pillow,

"I'm so blessed to have you."

You kiss him desperately; you couldn't survive without him. He kisses you back with the same longing as he slides a hand over to your backside. Your skin was exposed from the hospital gown and a crimson flush spread across your cheeks.

"S-suga, I feel naked." You stutter shyly. He smiled and kissed you softly on your scarlet lips. You feel his smile widened on yours as he mumbles,

"I can fix that."

Deepening your kiss, you could feel the weight of his body shift on top of yours. He supported himself by placing his hands at the side of your face, with his knee in between your legs. His smile and his dishevelled hair were irresistible, it gave you goosebumps. He sits on his heels and swiftly takes his shirt off, exposing his pale and smooth skin. His torso and shoulders were defined from all the labour he's been putting into volleyball. He throws his shirt to the floor, without breaking eye contact.

"I'll be naked too so you won't feel alone" he whispered

Your eyes widened at his sudden gesture as he found his place over you again. Your arms instinctively hook onto the back of his neck. Your favourite spot. He crept closer to your face, gazing into his elated hazel eyes. Nose to nose, your lips lingered for more, inches away from your long awaited kiss. His lips grazed yours feverishly and your back arched from his desired touch. You grasp onto his silver hair, making him chuckle against your lips. Your fingers trace the lines of his back as he lets out a slight huff in response. Deeply indulged in with one another, he pulls away quickly and whispers into your ear, "I don't know if I can restrain myself, (F/N)"

You could feel the heat of his body radiate on yours. The feeling was beyond ecstatic, it felt illegal. Two lovers on a hospital bed, with nothing to stop them from being together. Even if the world was against them, they'd always find a way back to one another.

Desperate to find each other in the mess of life, you wanted more of him than ever. Your hearts beat in unison as they thud out of your chests. Pressed up against one another, the pain you felt earlier dissipated to nothing. The guilt you've carried was obliterated with slightly open mouths and unspoken words. The love you've felt before was nothing compared to what it is now.

A tangle of limbs under a thin hospital sheet to keep you both warm, you sigh into his messy hair as he lays face down on your bare chest. His arms hugged tightly around your abdomen as both of you let out sighs of exhaustion. A hue of pink decorated your neck like a favourite necklace. The maker owned a matching set.

"Are you feeling better now (F/N)?" he asks softly into your skin, beaded with sweat. You could feel his heart rapidly beating against yours.

"Much better."
