《The Last Set || Sugawara x Reader ||》A Memory

Throughout the years growing up, your dad would record everything with his handheld camera.

"AH HER FIRST STEPS! HUN GIVE ME THE CAMERA!" he exclaimed to mom

From your first steps to the first day of preschool, he would never let a moment pass without filming it.

"Daad, you're embarrassing me." you whispered angrily as you stood in front of your middle school.

"C'mon (F/N), just one video please? For daddy's sake." he begged

You groaned as you clutched your lunchbox in one hand and your huge backpack was slung poorly over your tiny shoulders. Other students took notice of your doting dad as he crouches down to get all the angles. He sticks out his tongue and solely focuses on the tiny looking-glass in the camera.

"Okay Kiyoko, join your sister!" he waves his hand, gesturing her to get inside the frame.

"Daadd, please..." Kiyoko said irritatedly as her eyes darted back and forth from the other students pointing and snickering.

"Kiyoko, I swear just one shot please." he begged as he lowered the camera from his face. Kiyoko sighs as she trudged over to where you're standing. You both held out peace signs as you waited for your dad's instructions.

"Say Kitagawa-Daiichi!"

"Kitagawa-Daiichi..." you and Kiyoko murmur.

"Great." your dad lowers the camera and grins

"Now, to the inside of the school!" your dad exclaimed as he pointed to the dark blue doors

"DAD!" you both yell in a synchronized manner

"Ah fineee, I'm kidding." he chuckles and approaches the both of you. He surrounds his arms around the two of you, entrapping you in a bear hug.

"I just want to capture every moment, ya know? You're both growing up so fast"

Your dad's voice was cracking up a bit but he quickly recovered as he dismissed both of you to school. Before entering your classroom you turn around and give a big wave to your dad before he drives off in the distance.

Suga invited you over because he kept his promise to cook for you. To your surprise, your mom allowed you to go over to his house because she trusted him.

Placing the handheld tripod on the table, you adjust it just so to capture Suga making dinner. The smell of spices filled your nose as you sat at the island counter. Suga turns around and flashes a closed eye smile at the camera.

"What-cha doing (F/N)" he asks playfully

"Ya know, just filming. Act natural." you giggle as you wave at him to continue cooking.

"Filming for what?" he laughs as he adds pepper into the mixture. He stirs the pot and the smell was carried throughout the kitchen.

"Filming for a project." you lied.

It was almost Suga's birthday and you wanted to make a thoughtful video for him. You thank Kenma for giving you the idea of filming a happy birthday video because you really didn't know what to buy him. Also you were broke so this makes up for it. However, Suga was quite a simple person that he never asked for much. He never dressed super fancy or had the latest technology but that's what you loved about him. He was simple to love. He never asks for anything but when he does, he just asks for more time with you.

"Oh ya suure you are." he teased as he was still focused on his food.

Tofu, Suga's golden retriever trotted over towards you and you bend down to pet him. He had a beautiful, blonde coat and he was a huge dog. Emphasis on HUGE. He was almost the same weight as you and you swear he could probably crush you. To your surprise, Suga said he was only a puppy.

That's one huuuuge puppy...

"Who's a good boooy!" you pet him behind the ears and he wags his tail in excitement.

"Heh, Tofu seems to like you. Usually he's really shy when he meets people. I remember he'd cower in a corner whenever we went to a dog park. He's such a big dog compared to others but he's a softie. Reminds me of Azumane-san" he lightly chuckled.

Suga turned off the stove to let the food cool down. He crouches down beside you and scratches Tofu's other ear. The feeling was beyond pleasant as Tofu yipped excitedly.

"Ya? You like (F/N), boy? I like (F/N) too." Suga continued to scratch his dog's ears as he smiled brightly at you.

Your eyes linger on each other for a bit, capturing each others' smiles. Hoping his smile would never fade in your mind.

Suga takes off his apron and shakes his head. His silver hair was ruffled in an irresistible way. Placing the apron on the counter he says warmly,

"I'm just going to clean up a bit, I'll be right back." he heads upstairs to change his clothes and you wait for him in the living room.

You continue to rub Tofu's belly as he lies down on his back. Looking around the house, you realize Suga was alone, well kinda. He still had Tofu but other than that, no other people. No other family. The picture in the living room caught your eye and you saunter towards it. Tofu followed closely behind as he craved for more belly rubs. Sitting in front of the photo, it was a family portrait consisting of just the 3 of them. Suga, his mom and his dad. His dad had a cold look in his eyes that juxtaposed his mother's.

Suga looks exactly like his dad but he has his mother's eyes. They're kinder than his'. Wonder if he ever feels lonely.

Tofu brushes his nose on your leg and you let out a small giggle.

"Ah Tofu, too bad you're not part of the family picture. I'd make a cut-out of you and paste you riiiight beside Suga." you explained to the dog who seemed to be absorbing your every word. He wagged his tail uncontrollably and you laugh as he licks your face with his ginormous tongue

"I guess we do have to update that family photo now, don't we?" Suga walks in with a blue button up and black slacks. His hair was neatly groomed and his smile was brighter than ever.

Your heart skipped a beat when you saw him standing by the hallway entrance. You either saw Suga in Karasuno's school uniform or in volleyball clothes. Who would've thought he could possibly be more handsome as he dressed up just for you. You blush as he approaches closer to you and Tofu.

"What do you say boy? When should we put you in the picture?" he chimed in a sweet voice. Tofu excitedly agreed as he gave Suga a sloppy kiss on the cheek.

"Hehe, I like your kisses as much as (F/N)'s" he giggles as Tofu licks the tip of his nose

You blush at his complement and twiddle with your thumbs. It was funny how you'd still get flustered over Suga even though you've been dating for a month now. He'd still give you butterflies when he'd hold your hand or plant surprising kisses on your forehead. Even then, you've been on a few dates already and you loved secretly vlogging every second of it.

Being with him was something I hope I'd never forget.

"Ha, Suga you're embarrassing me" you stutter as you get up from the floor to observe the portrait once more.

You glance at the family photo that gave off an eerie atmosphere. Suga doesn't seem that close to his dad as he's positioned more closely to his mom.

"By updating the portrait, you don't just mean adding Tofu?" you murmur and he's caught by surprise of how you read his mind.

Suga gets up from the floor and stands beside you, absorbed in the portrait in front of him. He wasn't smiling but he wasn't upset at the photo. He was perplexed, as if deep in thought.

"He's never really been around, so he's not in the picture for me." he said solemnly

Must be lonely.

Suga's eyes fell downwards to Tofu who was encircling his feet. Tofu whines like a baby and Suga sighs as he carries his overgrown puppy and faces him towards the photo as well.

"You're such a baby Tofu." he spoke softly as he nuzzled his nose into his golden fur.

"Koushi." you say in a concerned tone, catching your boyfriend's attention. He turns to you and you say, "we can paint a new picture. With you, me and-"

"Tofu?" he interrupted as he held out Tofu by his bottom. Tofu barked over his shoulder and wagged his long tail at Suga. You couldn't resist his adorable eyes, and by his you mean the both of them.

What handsome Sugawara boys hehe

"Oh of course Tofu! Who wouldn't want him in our little family." you ruffle his ears playfully and for once you see Suga blush.

Oh did I say something off?

You start waving your hands out of embarrassment but Suga's eyes fell upon yours. He holds Tofu over his shoulder like he was burping a baby. Gently bouncing him up and down, like he was lulling him to sleep.

"I look forward to that" he smiles downwards at you and you tiptoe to meet his lips briefly. You never initiated when it came to kissing but it felt right at that moment.

Crazy that it's only been a month but I've never felt so certain about Suga.

"Well we should uh, I should, let me prepare dinner yes?" Suga jumbled his words and placed Tofu on the floor.

Tofu joins Suga to the kitchen and you giggle at the thought of making him flustered for once. It felt empowering. Chuckling to yourself, you head to the bathroom to clean up before dinner was served.

"Sooo, what's for dinner?" you peep in through the doorway. You take hold of your camera again and start vlogging. Suga smiles at the camera and holds out his food like a child showing his parents a new toy

"Ta daa! My favourite!" he beams as he hands you a bowl of spicy mapo-tofu. There was also an addition of meatballs filled with runny eggs. The broth itself smelt delicious and you couldn't wait to dig in. The savoury smell was pungent as you took a good whiff of the bowl.

"Shall we head to the dinner room?" He asks as he holds two bowls. He sticks out his elbow for you to link arms with him. Holding out the camera you're surprised by what Suga's prepared for you. You notice candles lit up with a fancy red table cloth that lined the circular table. Bright yellow sunflowers were placed in a small glass vase as the centerpiece.

"Wow, you did this for me?" you ask, mesmerized by the set-up.

Placing the bowls down, he pulls out the chair for you and you take a seat. There in front of you were shiny silverware that's used for important occasions. It made your heart melt knowing that your time with him was deemed important.

"Of course." he smiled as he took his seat in front of you.

"Itadakemasu" you both mumble as you take a big bite of the meatball. You didn't realize how hungry you were. But then again, you both just came from volleyball practice. Keishin was giving Suga extra laps for dating you. During serving drills, Keishin would even make you run around as a 'ball girl' as a form of punishment. Despite all these things, it was all worth it because you were dating Suga.

"Wow, it's delicious Suga!" you exclaimed

"Glad you like it. It's my mom's recipe" he took another big bite himself and let out a little 'hmm'

After eating in silence for a moment you couldn't help but wonder if he was okay living alone.

He must miss his mom.

"I was scared to ask but, what's your mom's current condition? Is she okay?" you ask shyly, breaking the silence. The thought always lingered in your mind but you were hesitant to ask. You poke at your food with your chopsticks and gaze at Tofu munching away at his food bowl

"Her kidneys are failing and we've been waiting for a donor for a while now. She's on dialysis but her condition is critical that the nurses have to monitor her."

He holds your hand from across the table and mumbled,

"You don't have to be shy when asking these things."

"I know, it's just I didn't want to overstep..."

"I would rather you tell me than for you to keep it bottled inside."

That's what my therapist always told me. Problem was I was always scared of speaking out my feelings because I always end up crying.

"How's Kiyoko?" he asked suddenly

"She's ah, how do I explain this..." you take another big bite out of your food, "she's slowly remembering things but for some reason she forgets like half of what she did the day before. It's like when she sleeps, it resets her brain"

Suga takes in this information as he slurps up the broth. He massages your hand with his and asks,

"So what can she remember?"

"It's kinda complicated but I gave her a notebook to write down everything before she goes to bed. Sometimes she forgets the notebook completely so she ends up not remembering."

"Sure sounds complicated" Suga sighed

"Sure is." you sigh in agreement. Before you end the meal you take one more video selfie with and wave 'bye' to your fake audience. Pressing the button to finish filming, you help Suga clean up the table.

As it was a Friday night, usually date nights would consist of fun activities like board games or movies but both of you were kinda stressed over exam season. Practices were also becoming even longer because Miyagi Prefectural Qualifier matches were dangerously approaching. Karasuno already dominated in the Prelims, now we just have to beat Seijoh and Shiritorizawa if we want a ticket to Nationals. Before studying, you squeeze in one movie that you picked. It was the Notebook. The movie that your mom mentioned before.

During the movie, Suga ended up crying like a baby and you held his hand the whole time.

"It's just a movie Koushi" you giggle as he poorly conceals his sniffles.

"B-but, why can't she remember him?!" he sobbed as the actress was suffering from dementia.

"It's part of the story silly" you pass him another tissue and he blows profusely on it.

After the movie finished, you and Suga settled down to cram through exam material. Though it would seem odd that you'd spend a date night studying, you didn't really care what you were doing with Suga. As long you were with him that's all that mattered. You and Suga were going ham at the assignments and drilling each other on equations for calculus class.

"Hey (F/N)? I have a question."

"Is it question 18 because I don't get it either." you flip the textbook pages rapidly as you adjust your glasses.

He lets out a small laugh and says, "No, not another math question but a relationship question. Oh, and the answer is x=5"

You look at the answer page and he was right, again.

"Ah I must've miscalculated" you say as you aggressively erase your work to start all over, "sorry what was your question?"

You were preoccupied with the equation but Suga asks,

"If you were to ever forget me, what would you do?"

You look up from your textbook and slowly put your pencil down. His eyes met yours and he looked serious. Your eyebrows furrowed as you didn't understand his question.

"Why would I ever forget you? Has the movie really affected you?" you inquired

"I was just thinking about how frustrated Kiyoko must be. Living but not really. I feel like if that ever happened to you, I couldn't live with myself."

"So what would you do if that ever happened to me?" you murmured. You kept your eyes on your page and started question 18.

"I'd do everything to get you back. I just pray it never happens" he smiled but his smile didn't meet his eyes like how they usually would.

You were silent at his comment as the memory of losing someone you loved terrified you.

"Sorry, I guess I was caught up in my thoughts again. I didn't mean to worry you" he picked up his pen again to show you how he got the answer.

Wonder how Kiyoko must be feeling? Forgetting everything that she did the day before and repeating the same cycle of the unknowing. Must be frightening.

"I'd do the same" you say and he blushes a bit.

Both of you continue your homework but the question that Suga asked lingered in your mind.

~

I walked into the night where the streetlights couldn't reach me. The breeze hit my face as I continued walking down the street to the playground Kiyoko told me to be at.

'Meet me here at 9pm. I'll be waiting by the swing set' I recalled her phone call

I wonder if she's capable of walking here. What if she has trouble with her wheelchair?

It's been a month since the phone call and every night I come here expecting her at this park. Though she hasn't showed up yet, I've been here every night, waiting for her. I know she'll come.

I sit on the swing set and shuffle my feet in the gravel. It makes a crunching noice under my feet as I swing slightly forward and back.

I know Nishinoya told me not to dwell on this too much. He even told me to give up on it. A childhood friend, Kanoka-kun has been messaging me a lot recently. Nishi even told me to go for it, but how can I when my heart belongs to Kiyoko?

I hear a distant twig snap just a few metres away. It was getting quite dark and all I could make out was a shape that looked like a person. As the dark figure approached me, beads of sweat started dripping down my forehead.

"Sorry to have kept you waiting." she said in a tiny voice.

My eyes lit up to see her. Kiyoko, my one and only.

"Kiyoko-san." I say timidly as she sits at the swing set beside me.

"I took a while didn't I? I'm sorry it's been a bit rough for me..." she explained. I notice her legs as they were still wrapped in bandages. She didn't have her wheelchair anymore but she used a cane instead to support herself.

"I don't understand. Why did you call me here?"

"Because, um, I need your help." she fiddles with the chain on the swing set and shuffles her feet side to side

"With?"

"I need you to kiss me again."

"Nani!" I ask exasperated as I eyed her with suspicion

"I just wanted to try something. You don't have to do it. It's just the last time it happened, I fainted but I remembered something right after."

As badly as I wanted this, it didn't feel right for once. It felt more forced but I wasn't complaining.

"Well, only if you want to" I agreed quickly. She stood up quickly and gazed into my eyes. Adjusting her hands onto either side of my face, she closes in and I close my eyes tightly. She leaned too forward that I fell backwards on the swing set and she topples on top of me. Breathless on the ground, I find Kiyoko on my chest as she successfully plants a kiss on my lips. She pulls back and after a few minutes of silence, I wait for her to say something but she is lost in thought.

"Kiyoko-san, are you okay? Did you hit your head when we fell?"

My hands were awkwardly supporting her lower back as her hands were still cupping my face.

"I just remembered something." she mumbled.

I felt her tears drip down her face onto mine

"Kiyoko-san are you okay?" my hands move from her back to her face. I caress her cheeks while wiping away her fallen tears.

"Tanaka-san it's really you!" she squishes my cheeks together, "I always regretted breaking up with you. I only did it because of my dad's opinion against you but, I loved you. I've always loved you."

She squeezed onto your face, as if she's scared of letting you go.

I didn't realize it but I felt tears forming in my eyes. It's been so long since I've seen her and it felt like a dream. After all this time, I was determined to find her again, but there was just one problem.

"But I don't think you should love me" she cried, "I'll just end up forgetting this happened, I'll be such a burden to you"
