《On Set》22

When I came into the office I was greeted by Whitney singing Happy Birthday. She had gotten my favorite coffee, knowing I needed caffeine more than a cupcake or a cake.

"Another year older! And another year more gorgeous!" She sang following me to my office.

"Thank you." I smiled taking the coffee and the hug she offered me.

"Are you still good for dinner tonight? Crystal is coming into town." I asked

"Of course I am! And guess what! Your horoscope looked amazing for the day! It said to call on someone and that you shall receive what you want!" Astrology was Whiney's newer hobby. I was grateful that begging for a dog had gotten old. Now she just updated me on the stars and planets everyday.

"Okay well I call on you to pick me up from my apartment tonight so I can get black out drunk at dinner." I grinned

"Ha. Ha. That's not how that works. But yes I'll do that."

"It worked then."

"No. That wasn't my point for telling you to call someone. My point was that Chris' horoscope said he would have good luck in love his love life because of his Venus sign. And Venus is squaring Jupiter right now meaning its an optimistic time!" She suggested with a grin.

"Okay?"

"So that means call him."

"I don't think that's what it means. Also he has a girl friend. Also how did you get his birth chart?"

"The internet. Everything is on the internet. Also I texted him to get his birth time when you guys were dating."

"What? Didn't you just get into this hobby."

"It was like the week you broke up."

"Oh, wait? I didn't know you had his number."

"Yeah, I've had his number forever. Since like your last birthday because he asked me for ideas on what to get you."

"Oh. What did you tell him."

"I told him to get you a diamond ring."

"You did not! Whitney last birthday that was like only maybe half a year into dating or something!"

"Of course I did! I wanted to be in People Magazine when they cover the wedding!" She argued. I rolled my eyes as if I'd ever let any type of magazine close to my wedding.

"He said not yet anyway. So I told him to just take you out for a nice dinner." So that was how I ended up in Monaco for my birthday dinner that night.

"Whatever. But look— I've moved on from him."

"That's not what your birth chart says."

"Well thats what I said."

"Call him and tell him you're a liar and you still love him."

"I'm not a home wrecker and I'm not a liar."

"Hey your charts say you two were very compatible."

"So, there are plenty others I can be compatible with."

"Please! I just have this feeling that something is going to happen!" Whitney whined.

"No! Thats so awkward. 'Hi Chris. I'm just calling because Whitney has a feeling something is going to happen.'" It wasn't like I didn't believe in Astrology. I kind of believed in it. But I knew that there was no way in hell that my horoscope said to call my ex-boyfriend.

"Fine. Google him. Something happened with his love life. If he broke up that one girl you call him. Deal?"

"No deal."

Whitney raised her eyebrow at me.

"Fine. I'll think about it!" I agreed. I opened up my computer and googled his name.

The first headline had me holding my breath.

"I guess you were right Whitney. He did have good luck in his love life." I scrolled the article to find a picture of the two of them on a beach walking Dodger.

And a vision of what could have been flashed before me. That could have been me with a new ring on my finger excitedly calling my family. It could have been me on the beach walking Dodger with him. It felt like a life stolen even though I had no claims to it. That could have been my life but instead it's hers.

Whitney grabbed the computer from me. "This isn't possible! I manifested for you two!"

"There is absolutely no way he's engaged." She babbled.

"Well it's been like a year since we broke up. Maybe he's dating The One, so he's okay with getting married so soon. People get engaged quickly." I defended shrugging it off. It course it seemed fishy. I thought it would take him longer to get over me, but I guess I wasn't that special.

"It took Trevor four years to propose!"

"Whitney, Trevor isn't forced into the spotlight. He wasn't dating with the world watching. I'm sure there are different rules."

"Why are you defending him?"

"Because I want him to be happy."

"I wouldn't. I'd want his white ass to come crawling back."

"Well I didn't make him happy, so there is no point for him to come crawling back."

"You want him to though."

"No I don't because he—"

"Wouldn't be happy, we got it. But you would be happy!"

"Whitney you know relationships are a two way street."

"Oh hell yeah I know. It just seems wrong. Chris made you so happy. I remember you telling me about him. You giggled talking about him! I just don't believe you didn't make him happy like you were?"

"That's just how the world works Whit. You can't always get what you want."

"But if you try sometimes..." She sang wanting me to finish the line.

"You just might find you get what you need" I sang making her laugh. I stood up with some papers in my hand and headed out to make some copies.

I sang to myself at the copy machine while I waited. I was proud of myself for not letting the magazine bother me. Maybe this was a sign from the universe saying I was over him. Or that we weren't meant to be. I guess I just held on to the idea that just maybe, we were meant for each other.

"Don't let me bother you." Danny said brushing past me making me jump a bit.

"I won't." I joked as I kept humming. Danny just smiled and winked at me. I turned my flushed face, not sure how to feel. Danny and I had been flirting off and on. We had yet to go out anywhere, but I wasn't sure what we would even talk about. He wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

"You look nice today Lucy." He commented

"Thank you Danny, I set something on your desk did you see it?"

"Yeah, I did. You wanted me to take the DC set at the National Mall. Which is great because I need some knew clothes. You think they got an H&M there? That's one of my favorite stores." If there ever was a moment where I wished I was on a show like The Office or Parks and Recreation it was now. All I wanted was that moment where I would look into the camera and they would just zoom in on my unamused face.

"Danny, the National Mall is a collection of buildings and monuments."

"So no H&M."

"No."

"Then why do they call it a mall?"

"Are you going to take the job or not?"

"Yeah sure. I've never been to a fake mall before." I wanted to take my head and slam it on the copy machine. I turned and left the room after saying goodbye. I walked past Whitney's desk on the way to my office.

"Why did we hire Danny again?"

"Because he's good at his job. Why?"

"He's so stupid."

"Oh well, I can't help that. Not everyone can be a genius like you."

"Whit, he didn't know about the national mall."

"We have a national mall?"

"Oh my god! Read a book or go back to school or something!" I yelled walking into my office shaking my head. Later that week Danny left for DC for a couple weeks.

Whenever I sit at my desk going over some design with the door closed to my office I don't want to be interrupted. My head is usually thoroughly in the game, modifying, drawing, analyzing. I always get scared that if I disturbed I would lose my train of thought. The phone rang in Whitney's office and she answered it using a sweet voice. Once she answered it she quickly turned my way and made her sneaky face. I could see it thought the glass doors. It was the look where you were trying to be sneaky while not trying at all. Whitney had a shit eating grin when she told me to pick up line one.

"Who is it."

"Independence productions."

"Small productions go to Macy." I told her even though she knew.

"You're going to want to take this one. I promise."

"I'm busy right now, tell Macy."

"Lucy I swear to god. Pick up the damn phone before I beat you with it."

"Fine, good grief." I agreed pushing the line one button on the phone.

"This is Lucy Jones, how can I help you?" I answered cheery.

"Hey Lucy, it's Chris." I shot a look at Whitney who had a thumbs up and a terribly awful grin. I rolled my eyes and turned my chair around so she couldn't see my facial expressions.

"Hey Chris, what can I do for ya?"

"Well, I kinda need a set. Can you build me a one?"

"You know that's my middle name. Lucy Can-you-build-me-a-set Jones." He laughed at my awful joke but I just wanted to slap myself in the face. Why did just say that?

"So, we need you, I'm assuming you're producing this film? And the director to come in to go over the contract first."

"Actually I'm the director. The producer needed a good set builder so I told them I'd call you."

"Wow congrats! I know you really wanted to direct for awhile. So when are you guys free to come up? What dates were you thinking about?"

"When is the next time you're available?"

"I'm not available until at least next month. If you need a quicker date, I have someone who I can schedule you in for this month."

"We'll wait, next month works better for us anyway." Chris told me. We talked about dates more until we came up with one.

When I hung up and turned my chair around, I found Whitney sitting in the chair in front of my desk.

"Oh my god! How did you just sneak up on me?!"

"You know that's my middle name. Lucy Can-you-build-me-a-set Jones." She quoted in an unamused voice. She was mocking me and she was proud of it.

"I hate you."

"But I told you it was in the stars for you today!"

The next month on a Tuesday to be precise, I sat across the table from Chris and a producer. It had been months since I last saw him. I last saw his puppy dog eyes at the airport. He looked good, but who was I kidding he always looks good. I smoothed down my outfit and fidgeted a bit. It felt like his eyes were staring right at me burning a hole in me. I went over my presentation about the building and designing process before I set the contract in front of them. They signed pretty quickly with a couple questions. Once we were done I stood up and shook hands with the producer and Chris.

"You want to get lunch sometime?" He asked me a little hesitantly. My hand was still in his from our hand shake. We quickly dropped hands once we notice. This was such a bad idea. Why would he ask?

"Sure, are you free tomorrow? I don't have much time this week. I haven't seen you in forever. " I agreed keeping my tone friendly and professional. Why would I say yes? It was like every time I talked to him all reason went out the door.

"Sounds like a date. Are you good with Mel's?" Did he really have to use the word date? Maybe I'm the only one over thinking this?

"Yeah sure, I have a meeting at two, so if we meet around 12:30 I'll be fine."

"I'll see you then Lucy." He said leaving the office. He quickly flashed me his little innocent smile that warms hearts, makes the sun shine, drops panties, and maybe attracts puppies. I don't know! It was his lady killer smile that made me want to punch myself. I gave my signature awkward wave. Once he left I put my folder to my face and yell into it.

I walked back to my desk with a composed face and walk. I thought the god damn universe wanted me to get over him! He was engaged after all! I shouldn't have wanted him like I did! I wanted to scream in frustration! My head was screaming with thoughts as I calmly sat at my desk.

"So, how was the meeting with Mr. Mc-hotty pants?" Whitney questioned looking devilish. "He seemed pretty happy walking out of the conference room"

"It was good, they signed pretty easily. It went as planned."

"Yeah okay? What else happened Lucy? Why are you uncontrollably smiling."

"I'm not!" I replied defensively

"Liar! You can't stop smiling! Just cause you're looking down at your desk doesn't mean I can't see you!"

"I can't stop smiling because you keep making me laugh!"

"What am I saying that's so funny?"

"You're not saying anything funny. What's funny is your face. It's funny looking."

"I hate you so much." Whitney rolled her laughing.

"The feeling is mutual. My meeting tomorrow is at two right?"

"Umm let me check. Yeah! It is. It's with the finance team. Why?"

"I don't know. I was just wondering. I didn't want to be late."

"Why would you be late?" Whitney asked and I looked up at her standing in front of my desk. I counted to ten before she gasped.

"No he didn't!" She yelled with her mouth wide open in surprise. She looked at me with her all knowing look. I just shook my head and returned to my work.
