《Midnight Falls》Two Years Ago

"e was literally putting holes in your head with his eyes," Fiona says.

"Who?" I frown.

"Lyn," she whines. "I told you. It's that really cute guy that sits in the back."

"And what am I supposed to do about it?" I put my Geography textbook in the locker, resisting the urge to throw the textbook on the floor and stepping on it. I hate Geography so much.

"Move it or lose it. You might start dating, grow up and have babies. Talk to him," she says.

"You should take your own advice," I smile, cheekily.

"Are you kidding me? No way," she shakes her head frantically. "We're talking about Luke Carter here. There's no freaking way am I just gonna go up to him and start a conversation."

"Why not?" I close my locker and lean against it.

"Have you met me, Anna? I respond with a 'Merry Christmas' when someone compliments me," she groans, slamming her head against the locker and I'm worried that she's gonna faint, but she just keeps her head there.

"It's a normal conversation. Just think of him as any other person and talk about what you like. Get to know him. You can do it, Fio," I tell her.

"But he isn't any other person," she pushes herself off of the locker and turns to me. "He's Luke Carter. He's literally the definition of 'hot dude that has the entire female population running after him because he's so gorgeous', well...the entire female population except you."

"I never said that," I sing.

"So you do find him gorgeous? I'm not crazy."

"You said that the entire female population does," I raise an eyebrow.

"I meant, me, Anna. Catch up."

"You're the entire female population?"

"I should be," she shrugs and I laugh, then her eyes go to something behind me and she beams.

"There he is."

"Luke?" I question.

"No. The cute guy that was looking at you. Look," she points behind me secretively.

I turn my head around to look at the guy she has been talking about. He stands by his locker, shoving things in it with a small frown on his face. His golden blonde hair is in a swept back style and I notice the twinkling of the chestnut color of his eyes. His skin is of a golden bronze color and he has a sharp jaw that's almost gleaming from his tan and the light. He has that gorgeous surfer guy's look. He's definitely a sight to be blessed by.

"He's cute, right?" Fiona asks.

"Yeah, I guess."

"Go talk to him." She pushes me forward.

"What? I-"

"Go," she points foward.

"Fine," I roll my eyes at her persistence, then I walk up to the guy and tap his shoulder. He turns around so fast that he hits his head against the locker door.

My eyes widen. "Oh, my God. I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to! Are you okay?" I step closer, so I could check his head.

"I'm fi-" he pauses when his eyes fall me. "Holy shit, you're even more beautiful up close." He blurts out and I raise my eyebrows with a small smile, then his face morphs into realization of what he just said.

"I-I didn't mean it like that. Not that you're not beautiful, I-I mean. I meant that...that you are...crap," he rubs his face with his hands.

"I'm crap?" I tease him, raising an eyebrow.

"No!" He rushes to disagree. "Sorry, I'm just nervous."

"It's okay," I chuckle. "I was definitely a bit nervous before I approached you."

"Really?"

"No, not really," I smile sheepishly. "My best friend told me to talk you and you seemed like a nice guy, so I thought why not?"

"Well, I should thank her later for that," he smiles. "Is that her?" He bops his head up in a gesture, his eyes focused behind me and I turn my head to find Fiona peeking from the corner and she sends me a thumbs up.

I give her thumbs up back and turn to the guy. "Yup, that's her." I laugh.

"She seems interesting," he comments with a lopsided smile.

"She is," I nod. "I almost forgot. I'm Anna," I hold my hand out for him.

"Seth," he shakes his hand with mine. "Anna like the Disney princess?" He jokes, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes, but I wouldn't call myself a princess really," I let out a laugh.

"I don't know. It sounds like a great contact name."

"Is that an indirect way for you to ask for my phone number?"

"Is it working?" He grins.

"It is," I smile, then I grab my pen from the pocket of my backpack along with a sticky note. I jot down my number on the paper and hold it out for him.

"Text me later?" I tilt my head as he takes the paper from me.

"Will do," he smiles.

"Awesome," I smile back. "Bye, Seth."

"Bye, Anna."

"What are you doing?" I whisper in Fiona's ear as she peeks from the corner and she jumps in the air with a squeal, making me scream at her sudden reaction.

"What the hell, Anna?!" She smacks my arm. "You scared me."

"You almost gave me a freaking heart attack. What was that? An emergency dolphin call?" I exclaim.

"What's going on?" A familiar male voice comes from behind me and this time, Fiona and I jump in the air with a squeal and we clutch on each other for dear life.

Noah gives us an amused look, his lips pressed in a thin line and I know that he's trying his hardest not to laugh.

"What is wrong with you, people?" Fiona grumbles.

"What were you doing?" Noah asks.

"I don't know," I shrug. "What were you doing?" I ask Fiona.

"I was just...you know, standing," she waves her hand in the air.

Noah and I look at each other and raise an eyebrow, then we face Fiona again with the same 'I don't believe you' expression and she gives us a cheeky innocent smile. I notice something from the corner of my eye and I find Luke Carter standing with his friend, Alexander Hills as they talk.

Luke Carter.

One of the very known guys in this school, mostly for his 'messed up' life like all people say, but I wouldn't know. I never believed any of their rumors. He's a nice guy, I guess. Well, at least that's my impression of him from Year four since all that we talked about is different types of gum and smoothies. He isn't what I call 'hot dude that is so gorgeous' like Fiona claims. He is normal-looking. Maybe his eyes are a distinctive trait in him and his soft features make him cute, but other than that he's normal.

"You were looking at Luke, weren't you?" I ask her teasingly. "That's a bit stalkish, don't you think?"

"Hey, you have your moments too," she accuses and I raise my palms in defense. "It's just that I wish I could do something about it and talk to him, but I can't do shit."

"Fio, listen to me. Watching him or admiring him from afar won't do you anything. You need to go to talk to him. It's not that hard. You made me talk to Seth and I did it. If I can do it, so can you," I encourage her.

"Seth? Seth Dickinson?" Noah questions.

"I don't know. How many Seth's are there in the school?"

"How does he look?"

"Blonde hair. Brown eyes. Surfer dude look," I describe.

"Yeah, that's him. He's the quarterback of our football team," he says.

"He's a football player too?" Fiona raises her eyebrows impressed. "You got lucky. I think I deserve a thank you." She praises.

"You will get a thank you, when you talk to Luke Carter," I tell her.

"I'm not as confident as you," Fiona argues in a whining tone.

"You can be. Go," I order her.

"Fine."

Then she just stands there and I blink at her three times.

"You mean now?" Her eyes widen.

"No, next week–yes, now!"

"I can't do it now! He's with Alexander!" She argues in a low voice.

"So? It's his friend, not his bodyguard. Go talk to him," I urge her.

"Okay then, but you have to come with me."

"Why do you have to drag me with you? He is your crush, not mine," I say. "Noah, back me up here."

"Nah, I'm not getting involved in you girls' crap. I will just stay here and watch the drama," he holds his hands up.

"Wow," I mutter.

"Please, Anna. Please, please, please." She gives me a pout and looks at me with wide eyes.

"I'm only agreeing on this because I'm nice, not because of your puppy eyes. They never work anyways."

"Thank you!" She squeals. "Come on."

She drags me behind her to where Luke and Alexander are standing, then she comes to a halt stop and she's about to turn around, but I give her a shove and she ends up crashing in Luke.

Nailed it.

Luke turns to Fiona and I see her gulping down before she stutters out, "I-I'm sorry. My f-friend pushed me and I-I wasn't looking where...where I'm going."

Never mind.

"It's alright," he assures her.

"I'm...um...going to go." She turns around and I push her forward and smile at the guys.

"Actually what she meant to say is that..." I trail off, not knowing what to talk about, until I notice the wallpaper on his phone and the familiar tally marks design. "...she's a total fan of Five Seconds of Summer too." I point at the wallpaper visible on his phone.

"You are?" He asks Fiona with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah," Fiona nods her head frantically going along with the lie. "They're a really great band. I love their first, um, album."

"So do I," he agrees with her.

"Well, I gotta go. I'll see you later, man," Alexander tells Luke and he nods at him in response. Alexander gives me and Fiona a quick nod before he walks away.

"Oh, I'm Fiona by the way." She stretches out her hand to Luke.

"Luke," he shakes her hand.

"I kno-" I pinch her arm before she can finish the sentence and she clamps her mouth shut.

"You're Noah King's sister, right?" He questions.

"Yup, that's me," she says, smiling so wide that it looked more like a clown's smile than a normal one.

I know that Noah is watching us, so I sign for him to call me behind my back and exactly two seconds later, he calls my name.

"I'm coming!" I respond and turn back to Fiona and Luke. "Well, I have to go. Bye." I send them a smile, then I back away and fast-walk towards Noah.

"Did it work?" Noah questions.

"Yup," I grin.

"You are so dead," Fiona glares at me, kicking my bedroom door close with her foot and the girls look at her with confusion.

"You're welcome," I say.

"What happened?" Sophie asks.

"Miss Fangirl here told my crush a.k.a my future husband that I like a band that is literally named 'a few seconds in a random season'," she complains, sitting down on my bed.

"They're called Five Seconds of Summer," I tell her.

"Whatever," she rolls her eyes.

"At least, she helped you with talking to him otherwise it would have taken you forever," Riley says, spinning in my wheel chair.

"True," Fiona nods. "Thank you. You're the best, babe." She hugs me and I hug her back, then she pulls away.

"But seriously though, what am I going to do? I know nothing about Five Seconds of Winter," she says.

"Summer," we all correct her.

"Whatever."

"That's okay. Just go along with it, like you did today. I'm pretty sure not all of your conversations will be about a music band," I say.

"What if he asks about the cute blond? The one who's like the main singer or something? Luke Urie?" Fiona questions.

"Luke Hemmings. Brendon Urie is from another band called Panic! At The Disco," I explain.

"Are those any close to Queen or Freddie Mercury himself?"

"No," Colette answers her. "Queen is a rock band, while the other two are pop bands."

"I'm never getting a husband!" She groans, falling back on my bed and pushing her backpack off of the bed.

"You know, just because Luke Carter isn't the 'one', like people say it, doesn't mean you'll never get a boyfriend. There are plenty of fish in the sea," I tell her.

"Yes-" she pushes herself up. "-but I want that one–so called–messed up, music and book loving pterois."

"I don't blame her," Sophie shrugs. "Guys like that are hard to find."

"We have a performance tonight by the way," I inform the girls.

"Great," Sophie grins.

"See? Now, that's a good band. Our band. Why can't Luke like our band? It's pop and rock together. It's amazing!" Fiona throws her hands up.

"Did you get his number?" Riley asks.

"Even though, I fail at communicating, yes I did."

"Text him then."

"Ask him if he'd like to hang out this weekend," I add, smiling excitedly for my best friend.

"That's actually not a bad idea. I'm better at texting than talking," she taps her chin and stares up for awhile before she grins. "I will do it."

She gets her phone out and we all huddle around her to help her with texting him. At the same time, my bedroom door flies open and Noah walks in, his tiny black curls are flattened against his head as if he just got out of the shower and he closes the door behind him.

"You didn't even wait for me. How rude," he scoffs and proceeds to push between us to see what we're doing.

"What are we doing though?" He grins.

"Fiona's gonna text Luke," Riley replies, staring him deep in the eyes. Riley and Noah have something going on, but I'm not sure what is it. They're confusing.

I asked Riley once what they were and she told me that they're normal friends, but she has a small liking towards him, then I asked Noah and he said that they went on a date once and they might get together. That was in the summer vacation when I FaceTimed them both from Australia. Now I have no idea what is happening.

"Finally," he chuckles. "You got some guts."

"Oh, shut up. At least I'm not lurking over-"

"Are you going to text the dude? Or keep rambling like an idiot?" He cuts her off, raising an eyebrow.

"Whatever."

Fiona is in love with that word.

As the time passed, Fiona and Luke talked more and they started hanging out more just like Seth and I did. I learned a lot about him and I can't help but think about how much of an amazing person he is.

He told me that he lives with his mum, his dad and his little brother, who's the most adorable thing ever. I also went to his house and once I saw it, one thing ran through my mind: whoa.

It wasn't even a house. It was more of a mansion and a huge one. There was even a pool and a mini-library in it. It was beautiful. I was a bit disappointed when he told me that libraries weren't really his thing and he enjoyed movies more, but it's not like I was expecting a guy who would live up to all of my expectations. There would be some ups and downs too.

Seth is a big fan of the Fast and Furious series and I had to agree with him on that one. Fast and Furious movies are one of the best action movies. He also said that he works as a part-time waiter, so he could save up money for his future-college studies and I almost started jumping up and down at the fact that someone understands my decisions.

Soon things escalated and we started dating. He told me that he really likes me when we were taking a walk in the park and I told him that I like him back, then we kissed. It was my first kiss, but it was a special one nonetheless. I felt as if the fireworks on my birthday were going off in my body. Cheesy as heck, I know.

Fiona surprised me by telling me that Luke and her went on their first date and they're going on a second date, then it won't be long before they start dating. When she said it won't be long, she wasn't kidding. Two weeks later the two of them walked in the school together with their hands connected.

It's May now, eight months since Seth and I started dating. I can't say those eight months went smoothly because things happened with me and Seth along the way and honestly, it didn't feel quite great as it was in the beginning.

"You were kissing her, Seth! I'm not stupid!" I glared at him.

"I swear to God, she's the one who kissed me first. Please believe me, babe," he pleaded.

"You could have pushed her away and told her that you have a girlfriend! I saw you kissing her back!" I hissed at him, not wanting to raise my voice with Cameron and Liam being downstairs.

"I did push her away! I told her to leave me alone. Come on, Princess. You know that I love you," he stepped closer to me. I cringed at what he said. I don't know why I did when I knew that I loved Seth too, but it didn't feel right.

I didn't reply, I just kept my arms crossed and glared at him.

"Please, baby," he begged and pushed a hair out of my face, then he wrapped his arms around me and kissed me lightly.

"Please," he repeated in a whisper.

"Fine," I gave in. "But I swear to Jesus, Seth, if any of this ever happens again, we're done and not even your excuses are going to make me believe you."

He frowned, but the expression lasted for a second before he gave me a soft smile. I wasn't stupid, I knew that he was annoyed by what I said and I didn't care. It was my choice and my life. He couldn't do anything about it. Yes, I loved Seth a lot and it would hurt to leave him, but I want to be treated well.

"I promise, baby, I'll never cheat on you again." He kissed my nose and I gave him a weak smile.

Like I was saying, it's May now and the year is coming to the end, so the football team hosted a party in celebration. The girls decided to go to it, but I didn't go with them, not only because I didn't want to, also because if my mum knew that her fifteen-year-old daughter that's nowhere near legal is at a high school party where, God knows what, is happening, God knows where; she'd no doubt disown me. Just living the Asian life, you know.

So I decide to do what any other helpless teenager would do; watch The Bachelorette's first ten seasons and complain about Trista's poor choice of men.

Suddenly, the phone buzzes from beside me and I see it's a video from Sophie, I frown and pick up my phone, my finger sliding across the screen to open the message. I open the video and my stomach drops as I watch the scene unfold on the screen.

Promises, promises.

| | | |

"Babe, please listen to me. I didn't mean to. I-I got distracted by everything and it just happened. Please," I can hear his footsteps behind me, but I just continue walking away quickly to avoid him.

"Princess, come on. Please," he begs.

I come to a halt stop and turn to him, shoving a finger in his chest. "Tell me how it just happened, Seth, huh? How did kissing my best friend just happen? Were you that scared to tell me that you fell out of love with me? At least it would have hurt less than watching you..." The image starts to appear in my mind again and I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to ignore the stinging and the heavy squeeze around my heart.

It's like someone is clawing at my heart, letting it bleed out and watching it turn into a silent, dead, pale, blue-veined organ.

I reopen my eyes and clear my throat, "...watching you kiss Fiona. Don't try to defend yourself this time. It won't work. Don't text me. Don't call me and don't talk to me. We're done."
