《Midnight Falls》Chapter Six

"o, who's this guest?" I ask mum, as I sweep the floor.

We are both tidying up the house, since this guest is coming in an hour. My brothers tried to bail out of the whole cleaning up thing by making up tasks, so they could get out of the house. Mum believed them and they managed to escape.

But me? I tried to bail out by saying that I have lots of homework, a test to study for, a fifty-page essay and taking Molly, my beagle, to the pet store, so I could buy her a bow. I guess I went too far with my lies because once I told mum about the whole bow thing, she said that I HAVE to stay and clean with her.

"Well, he's-" Mum starts.

"He?" I interrupt, in surprise.

"Yes, he's a really sweet guy and I think you would make good friends, although..." she trails off, mumbling the last part to herself.

"Although...?" I urge her to continue, but she just smiles.

"You'll like him," she says.

"Do dad and the guys know about him?" I ask, worriedly, already feeling bad for the poor guy.

"Of course, they do," she tells me.

I eye her suspiciously as she dusts the furniture. Something tells me that I'm not going to like this.

We continue cleaning up for the next hour, until I start feeling like my throat is on fire. That's when I remember that I'm actually allergic to dust, I tell mum that I'm going to rest in my room for a bit and she says okay. I go upstairs and throw myself on the bed, I guess all that moving and the fact that the allergies were getting to me, made me so tired that I fell asleep.

I wake up two hours later, and I'm already feeling better. I go downstairs and notice that it's eerily quiet. I guess mum went to work. I walk inside the kitchen, open the fridge, bending down a bit and search for the water. Water, water, water. Where's the dang water?

"Hi," a deep voice says from behind the fridge's door and I scream, punching whoever it is in the face. I slap my hands over my mouth, when I realize who it is.

"What are you doing in my house?" I ask, stepping back and slowly taking my hands off my mouth.

"Damn, you punch hard," Luke says, holding his nose. I watch as he tilts his head back, blinking his eyes rapidly as if there's something in his eye.

"What are you doing in my house?" I repeat.

"You know, I was expecting more of a friendly welcome," he says, leaning on the fridge and he didn't even have a single bruise. What the heck is he? A bean bag?

That's when I realize what he's talking about. "And I wasn't expecting you to be the guest," I mutter.

"I heard that," he says. "And you should be happy, Cherries."

"Don't call me that," I tell him.

"The shoe fits," he shrugs.

"Um, why are you exactly staying at our house?"

"Well, my mom and my sisters had to go visit my aunt and I'm not really a fan of family gatherings. Your mom, somehow, knew about my situation and she offered for me to stay here and I gladly accepted, although my mom doesn't like your mom, but we had no other choice. The end," he explains.

"But, aren't you old enough to stay alone?"

"My mom doesn't trust me with the house, because last time, I had a party, the cops got involved. I'm guessing she doesn't want her house to be a crime scene or something," he replies, running his hand through his black hair.

"Oh, how...remarkable."

"Yeah," he says.

We stay quiet for awhile before he speaks up, "Okay," he starts, "Let's get something straight. Shall we, Cherries?"

"Don't call me that," I say again, walking to the fridge and getting the water jug out, pouring water in a glass and gulping half of the glass down.

"Don't tell anyone that I'm staying here."

I wasn't going to anyways.

"Is that all you care about? Reputation?"

"I don't give two shits about reputation. These idiots can think whatever they want to think. I'm not doing something wrong," he says. "But, let's face it, I'm sure as hell you don't want anyone finding out that I'm staying with you, do you?"

Not true, but whatever.

"How did you know that?" I question, half-lying. I mean, I wouldn't want Jennie knowing or something. She'd take that chance to annoy me in at least five ways possible.

"I just notice things easily," he shrugs. "Like, how you start fumbling with your bracelet whenever you're nervous," he nods at the rose gold bracelet on my hand. I do? I think.

"And what if I tell everyone that you're staying at mine?" I ask challengingly. "I mean, I don't really mind," I say, taking a sip from the glass.

"Then," Luke says, "I guess, you wouldn't mind if I tell the whole school that you're the singer of The Night Chicks."

I spit the water out and stare at him with shock, before I regain my composure and look at him with a careless look. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't play dumb. I know you're the lead singer. Anyone smart enough can figure it out," he says.

I sigh, "How did you know?"

"Remember when you bumped into me and you made me spill the cherry cola all over me?-" I mentally roll my eyes when he emphasizes 'you', but I nod anyways, "-Well, I kind of figured it out."

"Wow," I stare at him with bewilderment.

"I told you, I notice things easily," he grins.

"You just met me," I tell him, walking out of the kitchen.

Luke follows me outside, "So, is it a deal?"

I stop and turn around, noticing how close he is. I pretend to think about it for awhile, "It's a deal."

Remember when I said that I felt bad for the poor guy that will have to deal with my brothers?

Well, I take it back.

"Luke Carter? Seriously, mum?" I ask her as soon as she walks inside the house.

"He needed a place to stay at and besides, he's a really nice boy," she says, taking off her coat and placing it on the hanger.

"It's Luke. The only eighteen year-old who got arrested more than two times. How is he sweet? And besides, I thought you weren't a fan of the Carters."

"I don't like his mother only, but the children are really nice and I think you kids can get along well."

"Well, I think not!"

That's when Luke comes downstairs and he takes a look at us, "Did I interrupt something?"

"Ye-" I start.

"No, dear. Not at all. I was just heading upstairs," she smiles at him.

What is happening?

"Oh, okay," Luke replies.

Mum starts heading upstairs. "Mum, wait," I stop her and she turns to me.

"Is something wrong, sweetie?"

"I'm sleeping tonight at Sophie's."

"Alright. Have fun, honey," she smiles, before trudging up the stairs and going to her room.

Luke turns to me and he smirks, "So, Cherries, I realized that you're not a fan of me."

"It's Anna and you got that right," I point at him, accusingly.

"Why?" He takes a step closer to me with the same stupid smirk still stuck on his face.

I almost feel like looking to the left and to the right to check if there are any cameras because this feels like some kind of joke. "Excuse me?" I raise an eyebrow.

"Why do you not like me, Cherries?" He says slowly and softly. It's unfair how the way he said that was so hot.

"Dude, you were literally being rude to me when we both bumped into each other and not to mention that you were still being a jerk after I apologized," I deadpan.

"Ah, you're a petty person," he simply replies.

"Darn right, I am. Just know that I will be reminding you of this thirty years later."

"Thirty years, hm?" He tilts his head with now a grin settling on his face. "You're here for the long run. Well, you're welcome to stay, Cherries. After all, a hot friend with an amazing personality is exactly what you need in your life."

I don't know what my facial expression displays but with the way I feel my lips turned up, it's probably disgust, while Mr. I'm Cocky And Proud just grins at me with his dimples making a visible appearence. He's so gorgeous that I feel like punching him again.

"You annoy me," I inform him finally.

"Good. Feeling's mutual," he nods, still grinning.

That's when Liam and Cameron come down. They look at me, before noticing Luke. "What's Luke Carter doing here?" Cameron raises an eyebrow.

"He's the guest," I emphasize guest, before going upstairs.

I'm guessing everyone is starting to like Luke now, because as soon as the guys met him, they acted like three girls who used to be BFFs and they reunited. I just hope he doesn't get to dad, because that means that my whole family is being brainwashed by this gorgeous black-haired god.

I'm sure dad is going to freak out when he finds out that a troublemaker is staying at our house for the next couple of weeks, that's if dad ever comes home. His office is basically his house right now.

I ring the doorbell beside Sophie's house.

"Anna's here, guys!" Riley yells from inside, then the door open and I'm met with Riley's gleaming blue eyes and I go inside the house, closing the door behind me.

"Colette, get away from my cupcakes!" Sophie screams, heading inside the kitchen.

"YOUR cupcakes? I'm the one who brought them!" Colette argues.

"They're so childish," Riley sighs.

"Eh," I shrug, throwing my night bag on the couch. "Save me a cupcake!" I yell, running in the kitchen.

"Leave my cupcakes alone!" Sophie shouts, holding the cupcake box to herself.

"They're not yours!" Colette shouts back, trying to snatch the box from her, but Sophie lifts the box up and Colette tumbles forward.

"Can you stop arguing, grab your cupcakes and go upstairs?!" Riley yells

"Fine," they both mumble, crossing their arms and stomping outside. Riley and I follow them. I grab my bag on the way and follow the three of them to Sophie's room. I close the door behind me.

"So, what are we going to do tonight?" Riley asks, sitting on the bed and crossing her legs.

"I prepared a bunch of things for us to do," Sophie grins excitedly, forgetting about the cupcake dilemma. "Firstly: Disney marathon," she says.

She gets up and sets up the TV, and then she connects her laptop to the TV before opening her Netflix account and turning on my favourite Disney movie ever: Brave.

"No, not Brave," Colette whines.

Colette doesn't like that movie, because we always tease her about how she looks and sounds like Merida. I'm not even kidding when I say that they could be twins, the only difference between them is their eyes.

But other than that, they have the same frizzy red hair, the same Scottish accent and even the same character, but Colette's mum didn't get turned into a bear. Colette's mum got turned into a female poodle.

"Brave is an amazing movie, Colette," Riley tells her.

"It would be, if you didn't tease me about how Merida and I look alike," she says, grumpily crossing her arms.

"Because you do!" Sophie exclaims, gesturing to the TV, with her hand, as it displayed the scene of Merida and her mum fighting.

"A lot!" I say.

"Whatever," she mutters.

"Oh yeah," Sophie says. "Anna, do you know who will be staying with you?"

"Yes," I reply, gloomily.

"Who?" Riley asks.

"Luke Carter," I answer.

The three of them gape at me. "Are you serious?" Sophie asks.

"Yup," I reply, "Sadly."

"But, I thought your mum didn't like the Carters," Colette furrowed her eyebrows.

"That's what I thought, but she told me that she doesn't like Mrs. Carter only."

"Wow," Riley says. "Your life just keeps getting worse."

"Gee. Thanks, Riley," I roll my eyes.

"That came out wrong. Give me a minute to rephrase that," she says and squints, staring in space for awhile.

"Never mind," she shakes her head, stuffing her mouth with a handful of popcorn.

"So, Luke Carter, the so-called bad boy of our school, is staying at your house for two weeks?" Sophie asks

"Exactly," I nod. "Oh and he knows that I'm the band's singer." Their jaws drop open and they stare at me with wide eyes.

"Oh, my God, he's going to tell everyone," Sophie says, worriedly.

"Don't worry. He promised he wouldn't tell anyone," I tell her and they all calm down.

"This year just keeps getting interesting," Colette comments, throwing popcorn in her mouth and I couldn't agree more.

It has been four hours since we started our Disney marathon and we kept watching one movie after another, until we finished three movies and a half, four tubs of ice cream and two huge bowls of popcorn.

And we were currently watching Tangled, when I hear a small scream erupting from Colette's mouth. We all look at her and she stares at the floor with wide eyes.

"Colette, what's wrong?" Sophie asks her.

"There's a freakishly big cockroach, right there," her face was filled with horror, as she points at the floor. I look at where she's staring and sure enough, there's a medium-sized cockroach crawling around.

"Lottie, that's a small cockroach and besides, it won't do you any harm," Riley says, trying to reason with her.

"Well, excuse me, because I'm afraid of bugs," she says, bringing her legs up and crossing them as she watches the cockroach with fear, walking on his or her tiny legs.

"Don't worry, at least it doesn't fly," I joke.

Right at this moment, the cockroach stretches his or her wings and flies in the air. And well, that is enough to set Colette off.

She lets out a high-pitched scream and jumps on top of the bed, snatching Sophie's blue pillow and waving it around.

"Lottie, calm down!" Riley tells her.

"There's a flying cockroach in here! How am I supposed to calm down?!" She yells, waving the pillow left and right.

Sophie sighs, before getting up and opening her window. Then she uses a piece of paper and waves the cockroach out of the room. It flies away and Sophie closes the window after it leaves.

"There. All gone," Sophie tells her. Colette hops off of the bed and sits down on it.

We stay quiet; the only thing that could be heard is Rapunzel talking. It takes us three seconds, until we all burst out laughing, even Colette, although she was screaming like five seconds ago.

Yup, we're all lunatics.
