Tanaya's side job:

Street workers worked in the streets selling newspapers and polishing rich-mens shoes.

They worked in the hot sun, in the wind and rain. They only earned a dime or two and hardly got any sleep since their work was always needed. Shoe shiner boys shined scuffed shoes of richmens feet as the rich men read newspapers that they bought from the newspaper boys. They too hardly slept and they were on their feet for hours.

Tanaya's condition;

They developed diseases like scoliosis from either standing or sitting too long or lung disease from the toxins that they inhaled while working.
