《The Demon Alpha (Stryders #1) - PUBLISHED》Chapter 3

Alphas were the worst kind to have as your mate.

Here are things I know about Alphas from reading on my guilty pleasure website called Wattpad:

1) They had high tempers.

Like, who can deal with that? No thanks.

2) They were over possessive.

Sorry, I need my space. A lot of it. And total turn off too.

3) They thought they were higher than the Luna.

No one is my boss but me.

4) Controlling

Again, no.

And not only that, but my own ex-Alpha was a wreck himself. The only thing the Luna was expected to do was bear him pups. She also never really did anything. She just helped the women and children. Kind of a boring life, if you asked me. I want to travel the world. Experience life outside of my pack.

I really wish my best friend Julia was here, so she could laugh at my predicament. Her laugh alone would cheer me up.

Bo had left me alone to be by the garden myself because I told him I needed time, and he obeyed me.

Technically speaking, I'm a Luna.

Technically speaking, I'm also so screwed. I need to leave.

A lightbulb flashed.

Exactly. I needed to leave. I couldn't carry my baggage to my mate.

Besides, he wouldn't miss me.

Impossible.

That pissed me off. I stand up and glance at the mansion, and look at the direction of where the driveway began. They totally won't notice me. All I had to do was sneak out...

I start walking towards where the huge driveway started and made my way out of the gates that were still open. I really couldn't believe my luck, but then again security here might have just really sucked. I saw no one at the mansion except Meg, Bo and my mate.

My luck was running until a man was standing in front of me from a few feet.

This guy had brown hair in a buzz cut and he was definitely over six feet tall, his arms crossed facing my direction. Power was also just oozing off of him. If I didn't know any better, I would say he would be an Alpha.

"Where are you going?" he asks me, using his height to intimidate me. It didn't. Okay, it kind of did but that was only because I was jittery from having some wolves wanting to kill me.

"Oh, this isn't the way to the house?" I ask sweetly. Hopefully he would just go away somewhere.

"You're supposed to be in the house." His face was stern.

Ugh it's already starting. The controlling. "Well I'm not," I state the obvious. "Who are you?"

"I'm Cole," he nods. "It's nice to meet you, Meredith."

"Who?" I ask, confused. Then remember the fake name I gave them. "I mean, who are you in the pack."

Nice save, Ava.

"You can say I'm..........the Beta, in a way" I was already turned around, hoping he'd leave but he didn't. "I can show you the way to the house." I didn't even care what he meant about almost being a Beta and the weird pause. Like he didn't know who he was.

"Actually, I think I'll just stick around here. I don't feel like going in," I say.

"I can wait with you," Cole says. The almost Beta needed to chill out.

"I'd prefer to be alone," I say. "It's not everyday you get to meet your mate and he hates your guts."

"He doesn't hate you," Cole gives off a strange expression.

"Oh yeah? From all the times I've seen someone get their mates, they usually do something like hug or be happy and smile. You know, it's a joyous occasion." I frown thinking about my mate that may want to reject me. Okay, I'm glad he didn't yell out "MINE" and like grab me. But a smile or something would have been nice.

Hmmm...did I smile when I figured out? Probably not. I ran away. For good reason.

"He doesn't hate y-" Cole stops suddenly. "He wants us to come to the house."

"If I don't?" I challenge. This was a test to see what kind of horrible person this Lance was. Would he take me by force? Would he force me to stay here or would he leave me in the dust?

Cole looks like he's mind-linking. "Then he'll come outside to talk to you."

I grimace, "I don't really want to see him right now." A flicker of confusion comes on Cole's face before it's back to the serious expression. I study Cole's face for a bit and see there's a huge scar running along his chin. That must have hurt a lot. It really adds to his sharp features though. This dude looks like he was in the military.

"You can be here for as long as you want," Cole's answer surprises me. Really? I get what I want?

"Can I-"

"You cannot leave within a mile from the pack house," Cole automatically says. This guy was like a glacier. An obnoxious glacier.

"Whatever. Take me inside."

The only thing I saw from Lance was his beautiful soul capturing eyes when I first met him.

When I got into the house, I tried to avoid making eye contact with him and wanted to ignore his existence since he was so keen on ignoring mine.

But I accidentally glanced at him, and he was already looking at me. Shoot.

I quickly look away, but oh my gosh he was attractive. His raven black hair was up to his ears and he was tall, but shorter than Cole. Plus, he was wearing just a simple white t-shirt but not before I caught the bulge of his biceps.

Those biceps made Chris Evan's biceps from Civil War shameful. That helicopter scene is still the best though.

"Meredith," his voice from a few feet across from me. I noticed Cole was gone, thankfully, and we were alone. I kind of regret giving the name Meredith because it's so weird to be called that and to remember I lied about it. Plus, I wanted to hear him say my real name from his lips. I could listen to his voice all day long. I needed to stop.

I also wanted to laugh at them for saying the wrong name every time, but I couldn't. Only Meg was on to me right now.

"Are you going to reject me?" I blurt, turning to him. Lance's eyebrows furrowed and he looked hurt for a second.

"Never," he almost whispered. I was taken by surprise. But I couldn't get too attached. I had to leave this place. Had to keep him safe from two Alphas.

"So now what?" I ask.

"I was going to talk to you about it. Obviously, you are welcome to my pack. Because you are a Rogue-"

I wince.

He noticed this and pauses, "You are a part of my pack. If you want."

I just stare at him, smacking my lips together. I would be safe with him, but I wouldn't want to keep his pack in jeopardy because of me. I don't want to be Luna. The responsibility gives me anxiety.

"I have a choice?" I ask.

"Of course you do," his voice is a little strangled. Then his voice turns cold, "Unless you wish to reject me."

I raise both my hands, "Hold up! I thought you were the one that didn't want me."

Lance's blue eyes were such a stark contrast to his black hair which made his eyes seem to glow as he looked at me, "Why would-"

"Alpha there's someone that wants to speak with you," Meg barges in the room, and Alpha Lance takes one look at her, nods and leaves. Without even looking back at me. Meg follows him.

I'm outside again until I hear someone. "Meredith!" someone shouted. I look around to see who they were talking to.

"Where?"

"You," Bo says looking at me weirdly.

"What?"

"I was calling your name," Bo gives me another weird look, and I almost slap myself for forgetting the fake name I gave them.

I blink. "Oh sorry, I just didn't hear you," I lie. I'm lying a lot these days. Karma is going to definitely come up and bite me in the butt. I'd deserve it too.

"I just want to talk to you about some things," Bo says.

"By some things, I'm guessing you mean Alpha Lance?" I ask. Bo looks at me sheepishly. He motions for me to sit on the couch. I sit down, with Bo facing me.

Bo sighs, running a hand through his curly hair. "Alphas tend to stay clear from Lance. The only relationship they have with him is just political wolf business and the sort as Lance isn't like those stupid wolves from a while back that just because they have power they just kill packs and take them over. There's no point in doing that. Lance likes to keep to himself. No one really knows anything about him. They just know he doesn't like to get involved in packs crappy drama."

"Where is this coming from?" I ask.

"The call he got earlier was from some other pack asking about someone," Bo says. My heart speeds up. I've been found. "Some Alphas are going to visit here, but I want you to know what kind of wolf Lance is."

"Uh, thanks," I say, my voice being shaky. We were quiet for a few seconds. "Uh, do you know if you have any cookies or junk food? I could really use something."

"Yes we have some Oreos in the snack cabinet," Bo grins at me, and gestures with his chin for me to follow him back to the kitchen.

Lance is there again, and he's just simply drinking water, but it looks hot on him.

That was totally the mate bond speaking.

"Ah, here we go, Oreos," Bo takes out the package and I clap my hands.

"But first, milk!" I say, going to the fridge myself to get milk. Inside this too big fridge, was stock full of food. On the first shelf was just a bunch of Fiji water, and I located the milk on the side.

"Already ahead of you," Bo has two glasses in his hands, and I pour the milk to the top, sitting down on the stool, which makes me across from Lance. I could feel his intense stare at me.

I glance at him.

Crap.

"So who was the phone call for? Some lover?" even though Bo already told me, it would be nice to get any information from Lance about what was going on the outside world.

Bo spat his milk everywhere and started coughing.

Lance's serious face looks like it will be forever etched in there, "Something amuse you, Bo?"

"Lance having a lover is the funniest-" Bo stops, looking a little behind me, where Lance was and stops, but the smile on his face couldn't be contained.

"It was Alpha Trent asking for permission to enter my lands in three days and speak with me about an occurrence in his pack," Lance answers. I swallow hard. Suddenly, I didn't feel good. I didn't know they were coming so soon. I almost couldn't breathe. I needed to get out of here like yesterday.

"You okay?" Bo asks me.

"I'm really sleepy," I lie. Both Bo and Lance stand up.

"I can show you-" Lance got cut off by me.

"Can Bo show me," I'm looking at Bo and I felt horrible, but I couldn't face him. I couldn't face my own mate because I'm such a coward.

"Yeah, sure," Bo glances at Lance a little hesitantly, but I'm already getting out the kitchen with both of my hands wrapped around myself. Feeling alone and scared.

We go up this swirly staircase, and we finally get to like the third floor. The thing about the place was that it mad me feel small. Bo walks me to a room, the guest room, that was standard. It had a queen size bed with navy blue silk sheets and a Persian carpet with a decked out curtain.

"This is where you'll be staying," Bo announces. "There is a bathroom too, with everything you need. And if you feel hungry in the middle of the night, just go to the kitchen."

"Thanks," I yawn, realizing I really am tired. My entire body aches. I am physically and mentally drained.

It just sucked so much that I couldn't tell my family or best friend about finding my mate so soon. My family aren't any high ranking wolf, so for me to get an Alpha as a mate was kind of rare. It made me feel not worthy. Then again, Alphas were nothing but possessive douchebags, so they're lucky to have me.

***

Waking up in the morning, I made a decision.

I had to run away because two Alphas wanted to kill me. Because I knew their secret. Because life sucked for me. But wait! I found my mate so everything should be going good but nothing is going good. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I knew he wouldn't hurt me, and I know he would protect me with everything. But I had to leave him. I didn't want to cause a war, it would be selfish of me. If Lance was going to protect me that only meant killing the Alphas aka war. And I wasn't that selfish to let wolves die for me because I mistakenly found out something I shouldn't have.

What do I tell Lance? Hey! So two Alphas want my head, and I don't want to bother you so I'm just going to make my merry way into being a hermit.

I hadn't come out of my room for breakfast and was thinking of a plan to escape. I needed to escape.

There was a knocking in my door. My plan sprung into action. I was quiet for a few moments.

"Meredith?" Lance asks through the door way, hesitantly almost. "What's wrong?"

Okay, it was now or never. I had to get out of here. Make a scene. See if he will actually believe me and buy into it.

I looked at the tears that were running down my cheeks in the mirror next to the door. Perfect.

I opened the door and when he saw me, there was a flash of a pained expression on his face for a second. "What's wrong?" he asks again, softly. I swallowed, shaking a little for added effect.

"I j-just need to go to the mall. I can't live without clothes," I sounded like a spoiled little girl. But if this would get his attention to anything, then it was perfect.

"You need clothes? We can go-"

"I-I'd rather go with a female," I cut him off. If he came with me to the mall then there was no way that I could actually do my plan of running away.

"Meg can take you," he says, nodding. I sniffle. Not Meg. Anyone but her. But when desperate...

"Can we go today?"

"Of course," he says, and I feel almost guilty because he was being so nice to me. He was being nothing but nice to me. Maybe in another life I would have had a happy life with him.

My escape was almost too easy. Getting away from Meg would be the hard part.
