You felt your pulse racing as you tried desperately to find the words that would help let out what was on your mind. Not once in your life had you ever gotten this furious. Your hands were shaking and you felt your throat closing up from the lump that was closing in. You didn't want to cry but you felt so frustrated that he wasn't understanding. Your voice raised higher in hopes he would hear you better but his followed suit. His wings flared open as he got angrier, and the feathers spread and closed as if he was still trying to control his emotions.
You had been arguing with Hawks for who knows how long now. Maybe it was just a few minutes or maybe it was an hour, but what you did know was that you were tired. It was a pointless tug-o-war and the sole reason why you were arguing was long forgotten. Now it was just about who was right, but you were too stubborn to let him win. Not when you invested so much time and energy and emotional grief into this argument.
Your fists were shaking and you gripped your shirt in a sad attempt at stopping them. You wanted to stop arguing. But was it worth your ego? Your pride?
You looked at him to see your anger reflecting back at you through him. It hurt. A lot. Was making him angry worth your pride? Was it really worth arguing with him when you didn't even know why you were arguing with him anymore?
After a few seconds of gathering your thoughts, you finally made a decision. You inhaled carefully, feeling the lump even more and a quiver of your lip. "Get out," you say.
"What?" His anger was paused as if he didn't hear you right. As if he wasn't sure he heard you.

You didn't look away from him. You didn't break eye contact even the slightest. Because in your mind, this was an option that could protect your relationship and protect your pride.
"Then I'll get out. We can't talk like this when we aren't listening to what we're saying. I'm going for a walk," you reply as you grab your phone and jacket.
This was the best decision. Anymore and someone might actually get hurt. Someone might say something they don't mean. A moment of clarity and time to gather your thoughts rather than throw the next best thing you could think of.
You closed the door behind you and walked away. Away from Hawks just for this time being. You walked to the nearest park and sat on a bench. You sat for a few minutes to calm down and take a few much needed breaths. You pulled out your phone and with it came Hawks' feather. The feather flinched and practically scurried back into your pocket.
A smile escaped your lips and you pulled out the feather to hold in your hand. You clasped your hands around it and pressed it to your forehead. This meant he still loved you. He still cared for you and you guys were going to be okay. He understood why you went out for a walk. He understood and that's what you needed at this moment.
You spent a little more time sitting at that bench with Hawks' feather in your hands before finally leaving. You returned home to see Hawks slumped over the dining table. He was waiting for you.
You froze in your spot when Hawks launched himself from the table to hug you. He hugged you tight and that was enough for you. He didn't say anything but at the same time he said so much.

His hand pressed your head to his shoulder as he hugged you. In a soft whisper he apologized, "I'm sorry... things got out of hand."
You cupped his head and pressed him into you too. You whispered back, "I'm sorry too... can we talk?"
You felt him nod against your body and he agreed before letting you go. You handed him your feather but he closed your hands around it and brought you to the table. You both sat down and he shared an hesitant inhale with you.
"Let's try again... without yelling," he offered with a smile that looked more apologetic than the spoken apology he had whispered into your ear. It made you want to give him a small reassuring kiss on the forehead but now wasn't the time. A talk was needed, not kisses.
You nodded.
