《Exiled Kingdom》Chapter VII

Demarcus' assigned task was to go to the battlefield and retrieve the spears, shields, and even chariots that were discarded by both sides, to use as wood for cooking meat. For this reason, they were also assigned an ox-drawn cart.
The battlefield is not far from the camp. Yesterday, the cavalry went out to scout and found that King Aserai's troops were gone, and they only dared to send soldiers to clear the battlefield. However, many soldiers were sent, mainly out of fear of being attacked by the Aserai cavalry.
Before reaching the battlefield, Demarcus could see the sky in the distance, it seemed to be dark, countless crows circling and the discordant cry made his heart pound.
A few miles near the meadow, layers of human and horse corpses were covered with dense flies and insects, even bobcats and coyotes were gnawing on the bones, not even hiding when they saw people but looking at them from afar with a fierce look and light in his eyes…
Every step Demarcus took, a layer of flies rose up, buzzing as he went straight for his face and he couldn't even scatter them, even if he shooed them away.
Demarcus paled and felt his stomach lurch.
"Demarcus, you've been through this scene so many times, how can you feel uncomfortable?" Mace's words of concern had a bit of playfulness in them. Because he felt that although Demarcus had changed, there were still spaces for him to take care of him.
“I'm fine!…blech…” Demarcus swallowed hard. Memory is memory, after all, this is the first time a modern man has witnessed this bloody battlefield. However, he knew in his heart that, in this turbulent world, such scenes will continuously appear in front of him, he must adapt!
He loosened the hand that covered his nose, forcing himself to endure the acrid stench, picked up the body on the ground and pulled the shield out from under it, quickly removing the maggots and tossing it onto the cart.
When he first came to the battlefield, the ox couldn't stand this terrible environment, he was always restless and almost hit Mace, it was Demarcus who gave the idea of covering the ox's eyes with linen to make him calmer.

Everyone has been busy for a long time, the cart was full, and each person carried a bundle.
"What about Demarcus?" Mace discovered that one person was missing from the team.
"There!" Olivors pointed not far away, Demarcus was throwing a javelin at a vulture that was pecking at a carcass, but the seemingly clumsy vulture quickly dodged.
"He looks like he's ready to take part in a javelin competition!" Olivers joked.
"To shut up!" Mace looked at him and walked over to Demarcus.
When Demarcus saw his arrival, he naturally picked up a javelin from the ground. He has now begun to adapt to this harsh environment.
"Mace, how many archers do we have?" Demarcus asked as he touched the sharp spearhead with his hand.
Mace was not good at all in this aspect, fortunately, there is the attentive Giorgris: “Archer?… I remember that there are about 300 archers from Battania under Jhoan's orders. If you count the Peltast who can throw javelins… uhm all of them… probably… there are 3000 people.”
“3000 people. How many Peltast are on our side? Demarcus asked.
“There are about 400…”
"Mace, don't waste the javelins, it's a shame, how about if each of us is equipped with 1 or 2 javelins?" Demarcus thought about it and said.
Mace hasn't responded, Olivors said first: "We're hoplites!"
"But facing the Aserai cavalry, our hoplites can't reach them and we can only avoid their bows and javelins!" The reason Demarcus made this proposal is that the memory of this body preserves this regret. Collecting this wooden weapon, he suddenly had this inspiration, as he knew that in the world he came from, another renowned heavy infantry (Roma) was not only amazing in melee, but their javelin throw was equally terrifying. That's why he proposed it.
Arius will have enough cavalry. Olivers said.
Demarcus smiled: "It is better to depend on oneself than on others."
"Is this the 'Oracle' that Wahdarr told you about?" Giorgris asked urgently.
Demarcus laughed but didn't reply.
"I think this idea is a good one, let's go back and talk to Laurenz." Mace took the javelin from Demarcus, turned around and suddenly threw the javelin, the vulture that was still pecking fell to the ground.

"However, Demarcus, you still need to improve your javelin skills!" Mace said proudly.
The fact that hoplites didn't use javelins was just out of tradition and custom, but the Vladians weren't bad at javelin use, even Caraldia regions were top because javelin throwing is one of the requirements if they wanted to hunt , Vladian children have been training since childhood.
"Excellent! We not only have beef and lamb to eat for lunch, but also poultry!"
“I heard that the meat of this bird cannot be eaten because it came from hell…”
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
At the camp, the animals have been slaughtered, the meat cut up and placed in the clay pot, filled with water and placed in a temporary built clay stove, everything is ready.
They all took out their weapons, then cut them up and cooked the meat.
Mace told Laurenz what Demarcus thought.
Since it was proposed by God's Favored One, Laurenz considered it carefully and found the idea acceptable, the javelin is not heavy and a Hoplite carrying two javelins is entirely feasible. So he went to Antonios hoping to get support.
Antonios called the other nine squad leaders and wanted to hear his thoughts first. Some squad leaders were for it and some against it. Opponents adhered to hoplite tradition and argued that it is completely unnecessary to let hoplites carry javelins due to Metor already having 500 Peltast under his command, while those in favor thought that while there were 500 Peltast in camp they were Sturgians and the two sides have no tacit understanding and the hoplites with their own javelins can at least keep the Aserai cavalry away and reduce their casualties. As the two sides discussed, Antonios could not decide and said: "As long as it does not affect the battle, each squad can decide whether to carry javelins or not."
Laurenz returned happily, ready to talk to Demarcus, but he only found a group of people staring hungrily at the pieces of meat being turned over in the crock pot and only Demarcus was missing.
"What about Demarcus?"
He "went to see the internal organs of the animals that were thrown away... and he said it was a waste..."
When everyone was puzzled, they saw Demarcus approaching with a long spear and carrying a bloody intestine.
“Hey, he quickly removes that stinky thing! It will affect our appetite!” The crowd held their noses and shouted.
Demarcus ignored them and said loudly, “I saw a lot of internal organs from cattle and sheep that were dumped in the camp, it's a waste to let birds and wild dogs take them away! Don't forget that two days ago we were so hungry that we almost couldn't help but eat our own hands! In the next few days, whether we are fighting or marching, there may be time when we are hungry, so we must collect these things and store them to have something to eat and prevent such things from happening again!
"Can you eat those things?" asked a robust soldier.
Demarcus remembered that his name is Ortax, a soldier who lived in another tent, his question was exactly the one everyone wanted to ask. The Vladians lived mainly on grains and only ate few meats, only this time they entered deep into Aserai and for supply reasons, they began to eat meat frequently. The internal organ of the animal not only smells fishy, but in the absence of proper spices and cooking methods, it also tastes bad. So apart from using it for divination, few people will try to eat it or even think that they will be poisoned by eating it.
“Of course! These things are not only useful for camping… they can not only fill our stomachs, but also improve our bodies. For example, it allows us to see more clearly at night.” Demarcus answered positively.
"Really?! That would be great!" Mace said cheerfully.
The five people in the other store were suspicious.
“Demarcus is the 'favored of God'! Did you know? Before falling on the battlefield and after a coma…” Olivors started bragging about Demarcus' amazing changes these last 2 days.
