《Cherry Cola》XVIII. Seventeen

Okay that's a good suggestion but what if we just, don't?
~ Scarlett's POV ~
With all do respect, I dislike my birthday very much for one reason and one reason only:
The awkward Birthday song.
Like what am I supposed to do as the people around me fake a smile and sing the world's most hated song?
If I'm being honest, this year I'm doing the renegade because I can't keep standing like the man in the emoji.
Anyways, I got up from my bed and walked to my bathroom, smiling in the mirror like some idiot.
I was finally seventeen, the age I've been waiting for all my life.
Why, you may ask?
Because that meant that I was only a year away from being an adult as well as because when I like thirteen, I asked my dad when I hit my seventeenth birthday, could I get my first tattoo.
He only agreed because he thought I would forget by now but I didn't, I remember almost everything and anything.
It's how I function, I'm not saying I can't forget stuff, I'm human so I do.
But, all the important things, I remember them because those are the core memories that make me, me.
When I finished brushing my teeth, I walked downstairs with the biggest smile on my face which stretched from ear to ear.
Alana was sitting on the couch, holding Atlas when she looked up at me.
She had the biggest grin on her face before she walked over to me and sang lowly.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you."
The song I've been dreading for began, so I started doing the renegade which made her laugh a bit.
When the song was over, I hugged her softly and then kissed Atlas's forehead.
"I got you a small gift."
Alana told me as her face lit up, I looked at her.
"Mom, you didn't have to."
I began but she just put her finger up and shushed me, I just stood there looking quite awkward as she walked over to the couch a ND grabbed a small bag.
She walked back to me and gave me the bag, I looked at her and then inside.
I reached inside and took a out a long red velvet box, I looked at her and smiled before opening it.
It was a cherry necklace, I looked at her and smiled as tears blurred my vision.
"Mama.. this is so cute."
I looked at her as she set Atlas down in his crib and took the necklace from me, she motioned me to turn around which I did and she put it on me.
"Let me go change into a cherry themed outfit, I have to match with my cherry necklace!"
I walked upstairs and then ran into my room, straight to my closet.
After a few minutes of searching, I found the perfect outfit so I took a shower.
I came out of the shower and grabbed my small speaker, I played some music as I got dressed for my birthday.
Although I hadn't seen my father in a while, I still was excited.
Scarlett's Necklace and Outfit
I grabbed my black and white converse, laced them up and then did some light red themed makeup.
I brushed my hair back and then grabbed my white bandana, I let my bangs out and that's what I called and outfit.
I walked downstairs to be greeted with utter silence, mom and Atlas were gone.
I looked around and lightly shouted for my mom but nobody was here, did they seriously just ditch me on my birthday?

That was what I was thinking I caught a glimpse of a red envelope sitting neatly on the marble counter, I walked over to it and grabbed it.
If you're reading this, Happy Birthday Scar! Since it's your seventeenth birthday, I've decided to throw a little scavenger hunt.
Except instead of finding sixteen other cards, you have to find all of your friends and their family.
For the first person or people you have to find:
Alana and Atlantis.
Good luck princess!
Lots Of Love, your father.
Of course my dad would choose a scavenger hunt, I mean it's him so why wouldn't he do this to me?
I grabbed my phone and keys, then headed out the door and to my car.
"Who the hell knows where those two would be, but knowing mom. She's at Baby Gap."
I spoke to myself as I started the car and drove off to the mall, mom is definitely the only person to be at baby Gap with Atlas.
When I got to the mall, I parked my car and ran straight inside.
With excitement rushing through my veins, I ran into baby Gap and searched through all of the aisles, but I found them.
"Found you mama! Oh my, I love the red dress."
I complimented her as she smiled down at me, I gave a kiss on her cheek and then kissed Atlas's cheek.
"Here's the next person or people."
Mom handed me the red envelope, I opened it and smiled.
Good job on finding your mom and brother, we both knew she would be at Baby Gap.
Next person or people on the list shall be myself! Your father!
You're my princess!
I loved being my dad's princess, it was originally just us against the world anyways.
My mom and I, and of course Atlas, headed back to my car and then drove off to where I thought my dad would be.
Which was where he first met Alana.
"How'd you know this was where we first met?"
Mom asked me, I just looked at her and shrugged knowing damn well my dad wouldn't shut up about her when he first met her.
That's when I got out and walked over to the front of the bar, I saw my dad and he smiled at me.
He was wear a black suit with a red tie, he walked out and walked towards me with a red envelope.
"You guys are rocking the red look, are we going somewhere special?"
I asked curiously only for my dad drop shrug and hand me the envelope.
Three in a row! You're on fire Scarlett, I didn't even think you would find me this quickly.
How'd you even remember?
Anyways, the next person or people you have to find is:
DJ and Jessica!
Goodluck!
I looked at my dad and smiled, I was really excited for this scavenger hunt but I didn't know where DJ and Jessica would be.
When we got into the car, I bit my lip and tried to remember where they would be.
"Where would they even be?"
I questioned myself, I started the car and drove back to the house.
That's my first place to check, I'm hoping I'm right because I don't have any idea on where else they would be.
Sure enough, they were standing outside with a red sun dress and a black suit with a red bowtie.
What's with this red theme day?
Oh no, did someone get their period?
"Y'all are taking this red theme seriously, but I love it on you."

I found it weird how they wouldn't respond to me but they looked like they had so much to say, I smiled as DJ handed me the note and walked to his car with his wife.
Assuming they were gonna follow me, I took the note graciously and opened it.
Okay that was just the easy stage, we just wanted to get some of the adults out of the way.
The next person or people you have to find:
Alejandro
I kissed my teeth and walked to my car but when I got in, everyone was gone.
So I was once again alone with myself, that's just great.
Although this was getting a little difficult, I knew exactly where Alejandro would go.
I drove to the cemetery and happily parked, I looked around and caught a sight of a man in a black suit with no tie.
I walked over to him and smiled, Alejandro looked down at me and hugged me tightly before giving me the envelope.
Alright good thing you found Alejandro, what's a father without his kids Scar?
Go ahead and find Xiomara and Rosa.
When I looked up, Alejandro was gone but I watched as a car drove off.
Seriously, where is everyone going?
I didn't want to know right now so I just walked to my car and bit my lip, I closed my eyes and tried to imagine where would Xiomara be?
I decided to drive to the ice cream shop we first went to last year when we first met, I was excited now.
When I got out the car, I ran into the shop and there she was with her sister wearing a dark red dress with black boots.
I walked over to her and she hugged me tightly but I know she wouldn't talk to me either.
Xiomara handed me the note with a smirk on her lips.
Xiomara and Rosa locked and secured, that's good.
Now time for the next:
Delilah-Mae.
The note was getting shorter, when I looked up from the letter, Xiomara was still here with her younger sister.
I looked at her and smiled, she grabbed my hand and we walked to my car and drove.
The only place I know Delilah would at, would be the school since that was where we first met.
I played some music as I drove to the school but when I got the school, I just took a deep breath.
When I got out, I heard two doors open and closed at the same time causing me to look back.
I watched as the same black car that collected Alejandro, pick up Xiomara and Rosa.
Now, many bad things ran through my mind which meant I had dropped whatever I had in my hand which were my keys and ran full speed at the car.
With anxiety coursing through my veins, I nearly made it to the car when it pulled out and drove away.
"XIO! ROSA!"
I screamed, I tried to run after it but I knew there was no way I could catch up to a car.
My heart was racing faster by the second, what was I going to explain to anyone especially Alejandro.
I turned around and ran back, grabbing my keys from the car and walking inside of the school.
Looking around like a maniac, I entered the cafeteria and smiled at the sight of Delilah and Javon sitting together.
Then I remembered what had happened outside, I ran over to them and began to shout about what was going on as tears ran down my cheeks.
Javon didn't say anything but hugged me tightly and rubbed my back before pulling away and handing me the red envelope.
"Damn it guys! Just say one thing, my best friend, no screw that, my sister is probably missing now!"
But all Delilah did was take out another note but it wasn't an envelope.
Dear Scarlett, in case you're freaking out about whoever got picked up by a black car, relax.
DJ is driving the people around to a destined location, so if you're crying or screaming or both, just breathe.
That relaxed me a lot, I opened the red envelope and took a deep breath.
Alright, you found Delilah and surprise! You found Wanna!
Now it's time for you to try and find these three:
Jayla, Cora and your dog, Jesse-Rae
I looked at them and smiled, I didn't bother staying since they were gonna get picked up by DJ so I just ran out.
Jayla and Cora were so obviously going to be in front of my house because that's where they first met, so far everyone's been at the same exact spot where we all first met.
I parked my car and smiled at the couple and my dog, I walked out of my car and ran over to my puppy.
He ran over to me and jumped on my legs, I pet him and smiled before walking over to Cora and Jayla.
Cora held out a card for me, I looked at her and smiled.
I'm sure you're getting the hang of this now darling!
The next person up is Kylee.
These notes were getting straight to the point, I met Kylee at the Waltons old house which is next to mine.
I walked over to the house and knocked lightly, nobody answered so I jiggled the doorknob which opened.
I walked inside and walked to the backyard where Kylee was standing awkwardly, she looked up from her phone and smiled at me.
She walked over to me and gave me a warm embrace before handing me the envelope.
Alright two more people to go, where was the first time you met Jaysean?
I'm sure you still remember anyways.
Jaysean, damn, I can't remember the first time we met.
It felt like so long ago, I walked out of the house and got into my car.
Now this was the difficult part, trying to wrack my brain to figure out if I met him on the team or at school.
That's when I remembered, I drove down to the dug out where Jaden and his team always practiced and where I first played.
I got out and walked down to the dugout, there was Jaysean looking stupid.
He hugged me tightly and gave me an envelope before walking away and entering the car.
Okay, that was almost everyone.
Remember where you first met Jaden, I'm sure you remember.
That was easy, Jaden and I met at the dug out.
The one that was a couple of blocks down from here, I walked to my car and drove to the dugout.
When I got out of the car, there was rose petals scattered all over the ground.
I walked onto the field and notice everyone was standing around, I looked at them and noticed how they were basically all matching.
"Imagine I drove my car onto the field."
I laughed, Xiomara looked at me and chuckled.
I ran over to her and hugged her tightly before punching her arm.
"God I could hit you with a car right now for scaring me!"
I told her, she looked at me and shook her head before smiling.
Okay that's a good suggestion but what if we just, don't?
Xiomara said.
I smiled at everyone but something felt off, as if something was missing...
Or perhaps, someone....

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

Rooms of the Desolate
Rooms of the Desolate is a collection of short stories designed to guide the reader through the many rooms and mysteries of the bleak and greyscale labyrinth of the Desolate. The first entry, "The Forever Tower" follows an unnamed wanderer climbing an endless, colourless tower; the only world they have ever known. As they slowly ascend alongside the masses, they consider the nature of their world and look to the corridors as temptation beckons. The second entry, "Production Line", follows an engineer in a boundless factory, who encounters a product that does not wish to bow to the overseers and makes them question their belief in the truth and duties they were made to believe. Content guidelines: Current entries do not include explicit profanity, but future entries may do so, hence the presence of that tag. Some entries do include gore and violence, though not currently to particularly extreme degrees. The Desolate is exactly that: a desolate world; as such, it is bleak, downtrodden, and may deal with mental struggles. Cover art credit: Adam Borkowski on Pexels.
