《Burn Archer》Fourteen- One Last Time

"Mum, they've got them. It's my fault. It's my fault."

Suddenly, a soldier turned the corner and stopped when they saw us. His eyes grew wide and I recognised him.

"Burn?" His voice echoed as it reached me. "I thought you'd left by now-"

I took angry long strides towards him and paused a few metres away from him. Straining every fibre in my brain, I attempted to use my telekinesis on him.

I thought back to how I shot the bullets through the soldiers. I imagined it.

Suddenly, an invisible force began to lift him upwards as if he was being held by his collar aggressively.

"My dad is dead because of you, Raven! Are you happy that there's one less apex in the world?" I questioned.

"You were supposed to be gone by now!" he said, trying to comprehend what was happening to him. "How the hell am I in the air-"

"Shut up! Just shut up-"

"Burn, are you doing this?" Raven asked.

"So what if I am? Are you feeling threatened?!"

He wimped as struggled to breathe. "You... need... to listen to me."

I flung him across the floor and his head bumped violently against the wall. "You have 30 seconds."

"I was the one that sent the guards chasing after you to the balcony so that you'd figure out the illusion and escape," he said as he gasped for air. "Now, you're not safe."

My mind was exploding as the words tumbled off Raven's tongue. "But my friends- your mum has got them."

"I wouldn't be too sure. She could have been lying because she must have seen you on one of our security cameras alone," he stated, wearily walking towards me. "Why did you come back though?"

To see you one last time? Something felt unfinished? Of course, I couldn't say that.

"To finish it off."

"Finish what?"

"What shouldn't have started in the first place-"

All of a sudden, arrows began ripping through the air from behind me. By arrows, I meant hundreds of arrows that sliced through inches away from my arm.

"I can stop those-"

Before I knew it, mum had flung herself in front of me as the unwelcomed intruders threatened to slice into me. It seemed like all the arrows had one purpose to kill me.

I heard her scream. My hands clasped around her shoulders as arrows shot through her. One, two, three...

"Mummy!" I wailed as tears darted down my cheeks. Spit escaped my mouth and I laid my forehead on her head which was tossed back.

I screamed. No, I roared. It banged against every wall in the building as it filled the ears of the people that were shooting at us.

Suddenly, mum's weight became heavier in my arms as she collapsed on me. Another arrow shot through her.

"No! You should have taken me instead!"

My knees punched into the ground as her lifeless body bounced onto the floor. I screamed again. Every arrow that was still coming had spun around in its course and bounced back to its owner's chest. More screams erupted as I pulled every arrow out of the bodies on the floor and sliced it in again.

"Mum. Please wake up. Don't leave me in this alone," I sobbed as I felt Raven's arms being wrapped around me in comfort.

"I'm sorry Burn. I'm so sorry-"

Her last thoughts filed into my brain as I held onto her so close.

God, I hope she'll forgive me for abandoning her. She's so beautiful, my child. Please, please help her. Now she doesn't have anyone left in this world.

Her tone suddenly grew angrier as it faded.

Why did both her parents have to be snatched? I know what she's capable of and so did her dad. God, I wish I had one chance to tell her.

Tell me, mum. Tell me. I'm listening.

Suddenly, Raven tugged on my arm. I watched the crimson from the arrows stuck in her chest spread evenly across her shirt, turning it a dirty colour.

The caramel colour from her eyes had been drained and was replaced by a bloody hue.

"We have to go, Burn. More soldiers are going to be coming."

He pulled on me. "No, I don't want to leave her!" I cried.

The last thing I heard before I was snatched away from the warmth of her body.

I'm coming, my love.
