《A Glitch In The Matrix》16: The Citadel

Evie stood with Fives and Echo behind Commander Cody and holographic image of Rex. They were at a briefing led by three Jedi, going over a plan for how they were going to rescue another Jedi from the Citadel.

Evie actually managed to pay attention this time and she couldn't wait to tell Rex that she had. After the briefing, she walked with Echo, Fives and Cody through the halls of the Jedi Temple. Evie wanted to explore, but she also knew how sacred this place was to the Jedi and wanted to respect that. Especially since she could feel just how powerful the force felt just walking through it.

Soon, they were in the hangar at the Jedi Temple that held a separatist shuttle, along a few other ships here and there. Evie's eyes widened. "How long have we had that?"

Cody shrugged. "Don't know. Just been saving it for when we need it, I guess."

Evie nodded and looked over at the weird machine that stood in the corner. She raised her eyebrow, recognizing it as carbon freezing equipment, but her vision was blocked by a pair of hands covering her visor, refusing to allow her to study the machine. The person covering her visor doesn't say anything, and Evie sighed.

"Let me guess... he wants me to guess who he is", she said. Echo gave a affirmative answer. Evie rolled her eyes, and decided to go with a different approach. She elbowed the person behind her in the gut, and grinned when she heard him grunt. Her vision returned and she turned around to see a familiar man in white blue armor on his butt, glaring up at her. She crossed her arms, her helmet hiding her amused smile.

"Maybe this time you'll learn that you've done this too many times in the past week, Rex?" she said. Fives laughed.

"Nah, he probably hasn't", he said. Evie chuckled, and held her hand out to help Rex up. He took it, but used it to pull her down with him. This caused a bout of laughter from the commander and Evie's fellow ARC troopers.

Evie rolled her eyes in amusement, and pulled herself away from Rex. She stood up, and once again offered her hand to assist the captain. This time he accepted it, and allowed her to pull him to his feet

"Honestly, Rex", Evie started. "When I first met you, you didn't strike me as the joking around type. You were someone who didn't have any time for jokes."

Cody piped up. "Ah, you're just making him soft, Evie. That's what your friendship is doing to him."

Evie snorted as Rex protested. He was interrupted in his protesting by General Skywalker calling them over. Evie smirked.

"Ready to be carbon froze, boys?" she asked. They all groaned, and she chuckled. Cody led them over to the machine where they each took a place on their own small circular platform. Evie smiled as she took her helmet off and closed her eyes as she was lowered down, and the carbon freezing process was begun.

~~~~~~
Evie gasped and stumbled forward, adjusting to her new surroundings. She stretched, feeling her stiff muscles complain slightly, but she ignored it. She looked around her surroundings and almost immediately noticed Ahsoka, who she knew was not supposed to be there.
Evie sighed but ignored it for now. She walked over to Rex and Cody, who were also stretching from the carbon freezing. Echo and Fives joined them shortly thereafter.
"Is that the commander I'm seeing?" Rex asked as he put his helmet on.
"Yeah", Evie said. "That's Ahsoka."
"I thought she wasn't supposed to be here", Cody said. Evie nodded.
"Yeah, she wasn't", the female clone said. "My best guess is that she disobeyed orders, yet again."
Rex chuckled. "Sounds like the general."
Evie nodded. As soon as the rest of the clones were out of the carbonite, they were on their to rescue the Jedi Even Piell. They walked quickly and quietly until reached a cliff underneath their entry point.
After much discussion, they soon realized they would have to climb it free hand. No jet packs, no ascension cables. Just their own strength and luck in finding good places on the wall while avoiding electromines. Evie sighed.
"Another day in the life of an ARC trooper", she muttered. The group moved forward to the bottom of the rock wall, and began to climb.
Just as General Kenobi reached the platform, he called for them all to stop and be quiet. As Evie held on, she searched around for Rex. He was hanging on a few feet above her. Soon, they were on the move again, with Ahsoka jumping up ahead. Once Evie reached the platform, Rex helped her up. She turned and watched as the last few clones were helped up. Just as the last clone reached them, part of the rock broke, causing the trooper to start falling. Evie reached out, and tried to grab him whether it was through physical touch or the force, but she wasn't close enough or strong enough to do either.
The clone hit an electromine, electrocuting him, and Evie sighed as an alarm was set off. She followed Skywalker and Kenobi through the halls until they reached a junction. Under their orders, she and the rest of the clones started shooting out the cameras, which activated a security system. They were quick to shoot out the weapons, but before they could move ahead, the walls began crackling with electricity.
"The walls are electrified!" Fives yelled. "Go, go, go!"
They all ran down the hallway, and turned around a corner. Evie just barely made it. The clone behind her wasn't so lucky and he got electrified.
"Longshot!" Cody yelled. Evie closed her eyes to grieve briefly.
"We must keep moving", Kenobi said. Evie steeled her gaze, blocking off her emotions. This was not the time to grieve.
They continued making their way through the hallways, avoiding droids when possible. They reached the cell where they knew the Jedi was being held. Fives and Echo went in first, killing any droids inside. Evie and Rex followed them, and Evie shot down the droid that was conducting the interrogation.
Generals Kenobi and Skywalker walked in and almost immediately went over to the Jedi, cutting down his restraints. General Kenobi helped him to the ground.
"Master Piell, are you alright?" Kenobi asked.
"Obi-wan", he said, his accent throwing Evie off. "What took you guys so long?"
The generals glanced at each other. "At least your sense of humor is still intact", Skywalker said helping Piell stand up.
"It takes more than they got to break me, young Skywalker", the short Jedi said as General Kenobi handed him his lightsaber.
"So you have the coordinates for the Nexus Route?" General Skywalker asked.
"I got them alright. Half of them anyway", Piell said. "My captain's got the other half. I erased the computers when we were boarded and both of us memorize part of the intel. That way, if somehow I cracked, the information would be useless to them without the other half."
"Where's your captain?" Kenobi asked.
"Being held with the other officers, I assume", Piell said. Evie sighed.
"The one time I actually pay attention to the plan, and it needs to be changed", she muttered to Rex. He glanced at her, and Evie could feel amusement wafting off of him.
"You actually paid attention?" Rex asked. Evie elbowed him.
"Yes, I did. You would've known that had you actually been there, not just as a hologram."
Rex's shoulders shook in silent laughter. He shook his head in amusement. Evie rolled her eyes, but wasn't given the chance to say anything before they were on the move again. They didn't get very far before they were surrounded by commando droids. Evie's teeth clenched, and she tightened her grip around her gun. As soon as she was able, she started shooting at the droids. As she shot one down, she yelled at them.
"That's for Droidbait, Cutup, and Hevy!" she snarled, turning her attention to the next droid she saw. However, before she could get a shot in, the droid was sliced in half by the short Jedi Master Piell.
She lowered her blaster when she realized all the droids were taken care of. As she looked around, she noticed the Jedis all staring at her. She tilted her head at them.
"What?" she asked, grateful her helmet was hiding the few tears that slipped out of her eyes.
"You seem to have a certain hatred for these droids", Ahsoka explained. Evie slouched a bit, but Fives and Echo each put a hand on her shoulders.
"Half of our original squad were killed by the actions of droids similar to these ones", Fives explained. "Evie was close to all of them, especially Hevy."
Everyone was quiet, but not for long.
"We need to keep moving", Kenobi said. Evie nodded, and they continued moving down the hall. They were barely down the next hallway, when a loud ringing started going off. Evie tried to clap her hands over her ears, but her helmet prevented that from happening. Her blaster was pulled out of her hand, and when she looked to see what happened, she noticed that it was stuck to the ceiling as well as everyone else's weapons. Evie furrowed her eyebrows together in confusion when she also noticed the general stuck to the ceiling. Electricity activated along the ceiling and Evie winced as Skywalker cried out in pain.
A voice sounded over the loud speaker. "You fools. I hope you enjoyed the reunion with your fellow Jedi because you're going to be my guests for a very long time."
As the voice spoke, Evie noticed several more of the commando droids blocking off either side of the hallway, preventing their mistake. Evie glared at them under her helmet.
The Jedi started trying to push them back with the force but they didn't move.
"They're magnetized", General Kenobi said. Evie watched as the droids continued trying to shoot them, but as they were unable to stand upright due to the Jedi then back, they kept missing. Evie attempted to attack them, but she was thrown back onto the floor.
As she stood up, everyone's weapons fell to the floor, as well as the General. Electricity sparked off of him a little, but Evie couldn't worry about that as she grabbed her pistols off the ground and started shooting the droids. Once they all fell, Rex hurried over to Skywalker and helped him up.
The group started running through the hallways again until they reached the cell where they were holding the officers. Evie was surprised they received little resistance.
Skywalker activated his lightsaber just outside the cell, and waited for a bit before he stabbed it through the door. As soon as he turned it off the doors opened, and Ahsoka swung inside, taking out the other droid. The first droid was dead from Skywalker's lightsaber.
Evie followed them inside the cell, checking up on the other officers with Cody.
"You guys alright?" she asked. They nodded, before turning to Cody.
"Who is she, commander?" they asked. Evie huffed.
"Her name is Evie", Cody explained. "She's one of the best ARC troopers out there."
The officers glanced over at Evie, who had her arms crossed.
"You guys done asking about me?" she asked. They don't reply and Evie sighed. She turned toward the generals, and watched as they talked to a man with an odd hair style. Evie immediately did not like the man, but she guessed he was the captain that had the other half of the information.
"It's going to be impossible to escape", the man said as the generals began walking out of the cell.
"What if we split up?" Kenobi suggested, turning back toward the captain. "My team will create a diversion, while Anakin leads the others away. That way, if one of us is captured, the enemy will only have part of the information and not all of it."
Evie almost immediately agreed with the plan, but Piell's captain did not.
"General Kenobi, I think it's better if we stick together", he said. Evie scoffed, but otherwise remained quiet. "A stronger force would have a better chance of protecting the information."
"Not in this situation", Kenobi said, turning away from the captain.
"But surely we'd have more strength in numbers, rather than divide us."
"Obi-wan has a point", General Piell said. "I'll go with him. You go with Skywalker."
As the team's began shuffling out, Evie approached Kenobi.
"General Kenobi!" she called. "Permission to go with you? It might be good to have an ARC trooper with you. I see no sense in having all three go with General Skywalker."
Kenobi nodded. "That would be much appreciated, Evie. Go let your captain know."
Evie nodded and hurried over to Rex.
"Captain!" she called. Rex turned her. "I'll be going with General Kenobi's team. Keep Fives and Echo safe for me, will you?"
Rex nodded, and Evie hurried back toward Kenobi's group. They ran through the halls, and as they ran, Cody placed grenades along the hallway. Just as the droids caught up to them, Kenobi set off the grenades, catching them in an explosion. It shook the entire base, and Evie was almost thrown off her feet.
Soon after that, they climbed into the ventilation system so they could move more efficiently through the base without running into battle droids. They reached a junction that went north, south, east and west, as well as up and down.
"This passage will get us close to the landing pad", Kenobi said as he leapt up into the shaft leading up. Evie watched as the other clone troopers followed him. Once they were all in the shaft, Evie followed. She paused when Cody shouted down from the front.
"A probe!"
General Piell leaped past Evie, and she watched as he leapt through the shaft past all the clones, and sliced the probe in half. She fell back, and landed just past Kenobi, who had also started to go after the probe.
"Security doors! Move or you'll be cut in half!"
Evie managed to maneuver well enough to dodge the closing doors, but the clone just ahead of her wasn't so lucky. She felt sick as his bottom half dropped past her. She ducked down as a lightsaber cut through the door. She moved as it fell down nearly taking her foot with it. She poked her head up through, and noticed General Piell working on the security door ahead of her.
"Well, this is going to take some time to get through", she muttered as Cody helped her through the hole. As they slowly made their way up the shaft to the landing platform, Evie kept thinking about how she couldn't wait to get off this forsaken planet.
They finally reached the vent exit that allowed them to see the landing pad, but Kenobi made them pause. Evie listened as he spoke with Cody.
"The shuttle's there", Cody said. "But there's no sign of R2."
"Something might have happened", Kenobi said. "We'll have to make our way to the other side and get a different view. This could be a trap."
They all quickly scaled down the side of the wall to a small ledge, and moved carefully toward the landing pad. As they walked along the ledge, they came to a small balcony a few meters below them. General Kenobi helped each of the clones get down, before he and General Piell also jumped down onto the balcony as well.
Evie stood prepared for an attack at any moment as Kenobi tried to contact Skywalker. However, the voice that came through was not the generals.
There was a whirling sound as two turrets activated, and a crab like droid appeared behind them. The door to the inside opened and three destroyers and four commando droids with shields came out.
Evie glared as she realized that they were now captured. She was forced to give up her weapons and walk with her hands cuffed behind her head. They were escorted by commando droids to the command center of the citadel.
They were forced to stand in a line, and they were greeted by a rather ugly creaure.
"Welcome back", he grinned. Kenobi spoke.
"I must say, you're not at all what I pictured for someone with such a soft voice."
Evie bit back a snort as the creature growled.
"I want your half of the information", he snarled. "Give it to me now or I'll start executing your men."
"This is war, Sobeck", Piell said. "We're all prepared to die to protect that intel."
Sobeck chuckled. "Really?" he asked as he grabbed a gun from a commando droid and shot the clone trooper that stood next to Evie. She nearly flinched, and the small movement brought Sobeck's attention to her. He pointed the weapon at her head, and she leaned back.
"This is one of your ARC trooper, is it not?" Sobeck said. "Is he willing to die to protect this intel?"
Before anyone could say anything, a droid spoke.
"Sir, we have located the other group", it said. Sobeck tossed the blaster back to the droid it originally belonged to. "and our droids are closing in on them."
Evie sighed in relief when she realized that she wasn't going to die just yet, but she grew worried for the other group. She knew they could handle droids, but she still worried.
"Your Jedi resolve only delays the inevitable. Take them to interrogation. Torture them slowly", Sobeck growled. They were forced to start walking the halls to the place that they had begun their escape. As they walked, two battle droids took over the commando droids. Evie wished they were R2's battle droids, but sadly, they were not.
Just as they turned a corner, they were stopped three familiar battle droids. Evie smirked under her helmet. The reprogrammed battle droids overtook their escort, and as soon as they were out of sight of the other droids, R2 called out to them.
"Good to see you, R2", Kenobi said as he removed his hands from his head. "I wondered where you've been."
"The commander is pleased to see you as well, sir, but would like to return to the shuttle as soon as possible", a battle droid said.
"Yes, I couldn't agree more", the general said.
"What about General Skywalker, sir?" Cody asked. Kenobi shrugged it off.
"Not to worry. He'll switch to plan B."
