《After Dark》Chapter 33

Back in the city, Jack followed the officer as he was released from his cell. He went through all of the motions of his release. When he walked outside, he looked around for William, Connor and Bunny. He was almost certain it was their doing that got him released.
Young Jack hardly survived in jail. He tried to push away the memories of how they tormented him in there. He could barely enjoy his freedom because of such memories, constantly replaying in his mind like a moving picture.
Jack was silent as he stood outside in the sun, something he hadn't experienced in a while. He figured that would be the perfect moment for a cigarette, just as William would. But after searching through his pockets he realized there were none to be found.
After taking a look around, he locked eyes with a tall man. He was black, and seemingly staring at Jack. Immediately, Jack's gut told him that he must've been part of a rival gang. He tried to stay calm, but his nerves got the best of him. He began walking away, only to find that the stranger followed. And so he made a run for it, and to his horror the man ran after him.
Running all the city sidewalk, he pushed past multiple people. He didn't care who it was, men, children, women pushing strollers. He had his youthful momentum, he kept them off for a while. But after a few blocks he couldn't handle it anymore, he gasped for air.
The man caught up and held Jack by the collar. Jack felt like a fish on a hook with no where to go, gasping to breathe.
"Listen, I'm not anybody!" Jack begged. "I don't hold any rank! The others do!"
"And that's exactly who I want to hear about." Smiled the large stranger. Jack was thrown into the back of a car and locked in from the outside. Jack shook frantically as he watched the buildings move past outside the window. They quickly changed in quality as they entered what appeared to be Harlem.

Jack was somewhat familiar with Harlem from all those nights following Eliza around. He figured that if he got the chance, he could make a break for it. So when the car was parked and his kidnapper hopped out for a moment, Jack figured it was the perfect time. Climbing forward into the front seat, Jack opened the door and made a run for it.
It wasn't too long before he was run down and caught. "Where the hell does your bitch ass think you're going?"
Jack was grabbed and dragged into an alleyway. After a punch to the face, he was led down into a basement. A sack was placed over his head to block his vision. Disoriented, he was led through a number of halls. When the sack was removed, there stood in front of him was Ernie.
Jack wasn't too familiar with Ernie, but he knew that he was William's archenemy. He hardly understood where the conflict began, but one think he knew for sure was that he wasn't going to make it out alive.
He thought to himself that his eighteen years would be vastly cut short due to his own stupidity for running. And his own inability to protect himself from the police. He still wondered how the feds knew where to look for them.
"Jack." Ernie walked over to him. "Pleasure to see you again."
Back felt a tightness in his stomach. The possibilities of what may happen to him. The fear almost incapacitated him. They tied him to a chair so that there would be no exit for him.
"Why am I here?" Jack looked on either side of him.
"Why wouldn't you be?" Ernie smiled widely and revealed a gold tooth. "You have something I want."
"Me?" Jack asked.

"Yeah." Ernie answered, then he poked Jack in the forehead, it was hard and causes Jack's mind to stir. "It's up here."
Jack knew that if he wanted to survive, he'd have to give up something. So he wisely made a story up, giving entirely false information. He hoped that it would protect William and the others, who he thought were still somewhere on that forsaken island.
"I hope you're telling the truth, kid." Ernie pointed out. "Because if not, I'm gonna have you sleeping in the Long Island Sound."
"I told you everything I know." Jack told him. Ernie huffed as he took a seat. Someone else entered the room, from the sound of the heels Jack could tell it was a girl.
Jack lifted his head up at the exact moment she was close enough to be recognized. And Jack couldn't believe his eyes.
It was the Peruvian girl.
Her eyes watered as though she was blinking back tears. Jack immediately knew what happened. In that moment, he was glad he was tied to that chair. He was filled with so much anger and rage. But also, he was filled with hurt. The girl who he fell for, the girl he trusted suddenly was all in his imagination.
She took a seat on Ernie's lap, their age difference disgusting Jack. Ernie grinned as he watched Jack react. "This is your little girlfriend, isn't it?"
Jack tried not to cry. Tears fell down her cheeks.
"Oh, look. He's crying." Ernie said and his men laughed along. "Kid you forgot the first rule of this life. Never trust a bitch."
Jack remained silent.
"Didn't your cousin mentor you on that?" Ernie asked. "He seems like an idiot. Leaving you to fend for yourself."
"Will's gonna come for me." Jack told Ernie, which invoked a laugh from him.
"You think he's gonna come back for you?" Ernie cackled. "Oh, kid. He hasn't been seen since you got caught!"
Jack tried to ignore Ernie's words and keep faith that William would come back, but it got more and more difficult.
"He doesn't care about you. He only cares about himself!" Ernie spoke. The Peruvian girl saw how Jack was hurting, and stood up to comfort him. She pressed her palms to his cheeks, where immediately Ernie ordered his men to grab her.
"Take her off of him!" He pointed, and she was dragged to the ground. "If you don't know how to act, I'm tying you up next!"
