《Affair with a married man》Chapter 16

The bell rang signaling the end of the day. I leaped from my seat and bolted out into the hall. I put my books away in my locker and patiently waited for Chels so we could leave for the weekend. She walked up a few seconds later and looped her arm with mine and we started down the hall. We jumped in my car and she immediately started blaring the radio. I smiled and shook my head pulling out of my Parking spot. Eventually we got out of the school parking lot and started down the road. Chelsea started singing in a corny voice and I turned to look at her laughing. I glanced back at the road and gasped. The next thing I know I'm swerving to miss a dog in the middle of the road and drove off the road.
I woke up in a hospital bed. I looked around to see a nurse standing beside my bed. I groaned. "Hello." The nurse greeted moving to stand in front of the bed so I could see her better. "Hey." I croaked. "What happened?" I asked. I raised up and looked around again remembering Chelsea. "Where's Chelsea?" "You were in a car wreck. They said your car swerved off the road and hit a tree. Your friend is fine. She has a broken arm but should be released soon." She answered. I nodded. "Now that you're awake we're going to take you to have a few tests done. You've already been given an x-Ray and you have a broken leg..we searched your stuff and couldn't find anyone listen as emergency contact. Would you like us to call someone?" She asked. I nodded. "Can you call my parents...and my friend Ben." I answered.
She gave a slight nod and handed me a piece of paper to write down their numbers. Once that was done I had my blood
drawn and then taken for a CT. Once I made it back to my room my parents and Lexie and Ben were already there. I gave them a weak smile as my bed was being rolled back into the room. "How are you feeling sweetie?" Lexie asked coming over to my bed and rubbing a hand over my head. "How long until we have the results from the tests?" My mom asked the nurse. "Not too long. The doctor should be in in about 30 minutes to go over the results." My mom nodded. As the nurse was leaving Chelsea came strolling in with her arm in a sling. She gave me a smirk and came over and say on the edge of my bed. "Way to almost kill us bestie." She said sitting down. I rolled my eyes. "If I recall correctly it was your singing that distracted me." I countered. She smirked. "Well...you dying?" She said. I shook my head. "You couldn't be that lucky." I answered. "Just a broken leg as of right now, but they're doing more tests." I threw in. She gave a slight nod. "All I got was a broke arm...looks like I'm gonna make it." She said. "Darn." I said with a smile. She rolled her eyes.
A cellphone ringing broke up our conversation. Lexie moved away from my bedside and grabbed her phone out of her purse and sighed reading the name on the screen. "It's work. I'll be right back." I nodded at her with a smile as she walked out of my room and into the hall. "Do you need anything honey?" My dad asked. I looked up at him. "Actually I'm dying for some Chinese." I said. He faked a groan and I giggled. "Please!" I whined. "Just because you're my little girl. Chels do you want anything?" He asked. Chels nodded and told him what she wanted. He then asked Mom and Ben who told him they were good. He kissed the top of my head before walking out the door to go get our food. Shortly after that the doctor came in. He greeted us and came to the end of the bed. "Miss Ray, how are you feeling?" He asked. I shrugged. "A little sore, but overall I feel okay." I answered.

He nodded and looked down at my chart. All of your tests came back okay...I'm sorry to inform you that your little boy didn't make it..the trauma and stress your body was through caused a miscarriage." I looked at him in shock. "I...I was...I was P-Pregnant?" I asked shocked. He gave a nod. "Yes ma'am. 15 weeks..I apologize. I thought you were aware." I shook my head and glanced over at my mother who still looked in disbelief. I looked over at Ben who was completely pale. "I'll leave you to talk with your family." The doctor said excusing himself. My mom finally spoke. "I..Uh..I'll go call your father and the rest of the family." She said walking towards the door. When she walked out she closed the glass door behind her and I saw her walk past Lexie who was still on the phone outside my window. I turned back to look at Ben when I heard him move. He came over and say on the edge of my bed. "I had a baby Ben..we had a son." I said starting to cry. He brought my into him and I buried my face in his chest and I cried. I heard Chelsea get up and walked out into the hall. I moved away from him but he kept his arm around me. "I'm sorry Ben." I said after a few minutes. "Don't be. I'm just glad you're okay. You can always have another baby, we can't have another you." He said softly. I rested my head against his shoulder.
I stood there at the window just getting off the phone with my boss. Chelsea walked out into the hall and joined me wiping stray tears from her eyes. I watched Ben and Jayla from the window. I saw how he was with her and how comforting he was to her. Chels came over and stood beside me facing the window. "He's never been that way with me." I said more to myself than anybody. I knew Chelsea heard me because she glanced at me. I quickly looked away from the window and took a deep breath. "What did the doctor say?" I asked. Chelsea looked at me. "He said all of her tests came back good, but she lost the baby.." She answered quietly. I looked at her shocked. "Jayla was pregnant?" I breathed. She nodded. "Nobody had any idea. Jayla didn't even know." Chels answered. "Who's was it?" I asked glancing back at the window at my husband and Jayla, not really wanting to know the answer to the question. "I'm pretty sure it was Gabriel's." She answered. I nodded.
See the baby isn't even his. He's not cheating on you...he can't be. I tried to reassure myself. "Want to go back in?" I asked. Chelsea shrugged and started back in the door with me following her. When Ben saw us coming back in he let go of her and stood up. I went straight over to Jayla's bed and sat on the edge and wrapped my arms around her and brought her into me. "I'm so sorry baby girl." I said. "It was a boy Lex. I was going to have a son." She sobbed into my shoulder. I ran my fingers through her hair. And "shh'd" her to try and comfort her. I leaned back against the bed keeping a hold of her and bringing her with me so we were stretched out back on the bed with her sobbing into my shoulder. Her parents, Derek and Charlotte , came in. Charlotte had puffy eyes where you could tell she'd been crying. Derek places the bag of Chinese onto the hospital tray and walked towards the corner and propped himself up against the wall. Jayla must have fell asleep because she had stopped moving. "Who's was it?" I heard Charlotte ask no one in particular. "Gabriel's." Chelsea answered. I glanced over at Ben who was already looking at me, or at the girl in my arms one. "Did anyone call Jessica?" I asked looking around at the people in my room. "I will." Ben answered fishing his phone out of his pocket. "Has anyone told Gabriel?" Derek asked. I shook my head.

"I'll call him off of her phone." Charlotte said bending down to get into Jayla's purse to find her phone. "Don't call him. Jayla didn't even know until 30 minutes ago. There's no reason to tell Gabriel at all. They weren't together and she wouldn't want you to tell him." Chelsea said. "If she wants him to know she'll tell him. If she doesn't that's her choice." She added at the end. I glanced between them. From Chelsea's straightforward look to Charlotte's look of uncertainty. Charlotte eventually agreed and put Jayla's phone on the hospital table. Ben came back in at that time. "Jessica is on her way." I heard Charlotte's phone ring. "It's my mom." She said. She answered it standing there. She quickly got off the phone. "My mother and your mother are coming up here in the morning." She said looking over at Derek. Who nodded mid yawn. "I'm off tomorrow..we can stay here with her while y'all go get some rest. It's been a long day." I suggested. Charlotte started to object. "Really it's no trouble. I'm off tomorrow and I'm sure Ben could call in the office tomorrow and explain everything. We'd be fine." I insisted. She let out a deep breath. "Thank you Lexie." She said coming over to hug me. I smiled at her. I then hugged Derek and then they each kissed Jayla's forehead and gave Chels a hug before walking out the door. Ben walked over and sat down on the couch followed by Chelsea. "It's been a really long day." I said after a few minutes. "Yes it has." Chelsea agreed. Ben was nodding when I glanced up at him. He looked down at the sleeping girl on my shoulder before looking back down at the floor. "Chelsea sweetie you need to go get some rest. You've had a traumatic day too. I'm sure your parents are wanting you home." I said. She shook her head. "I'm not leaving her. Compared to the news she got I'm completely fine. My parents know I'm here. I texted her and filled her in on everything. I'm staying here." She said definitely. I have a slight nod.
Jayla stirred beside me. I looked down at her and she gave a groan. Her eyes fluttered open and she looked up at me. "Hey." She croaked. "Hey." I answered with a smile. "Did my dad make it back with my Chinese?" She asked stretching. I giggled. "Yes he did. Would you like yours?" She nodded sitting up. I moved so she could get more comfortable and grabbed the bag of Chinese and handed her plate to her and gave Chelsea hers. Almost instinctively my stomach growled causing Chelsea to laugh. "You can go get something to eat. I'll be fine." Jayla said. I nodded. "What do you want babe?" I asked looking over at Ben. "Mexican sounds good." He said. I nodded and grabbed a notepad from my purse. "Write down what you want." I said passing it over to him. "We'll also grab you some drinks while we're out. What do you want?" I asked looking at Chelsea and Jay. "Sweet tea is fine with me." Jay answered. "Me too." Chelsea threw in. I gave a slight nod. I looked over at Ben who looked like he had no intention of moving. Chelsea must have noticed because she spoke up. "I'll ride with you." She said sympathetically. I gave a slight nod with a smile. "Let's go." I said picking up my purse. "I'll stay here with Jay." Ben said. I gave him a slight nod not even looking up at him. I walked out of the door with Chels and headed to my car. Once in there I couldn't hold my tongue any longer. "Is my husband in love with her?!" I asked. Chelsea looked startled. "W-What?" She stuttered. "Is my husband in love with Jayla?" I asked again. She shook my head. "No Lex. He's in love with you. He thinks of her like his sister and its hit him hard like its hit the rest of us. That's all." She said. I wanted to believe her. I really did. I turned and looked back at the road and headed down to the Mexican restaurant.
Once the room was empty I looked over at Ben who was staring at his feet. "I love you." I whispered. Hearing my voice his eyes shot up to my face. It was like instinct took over and he moved and sat on the edge of my bed. "I love you so much more baby girl. He answered planting his lips on mine. I shakily brought my hand up to his face and let my hand stop on his cheek. I could feel his scruff under my fingers. I broke the kiss. "You do know that this baby was yours right? I never slept with anyone else." I said. He grabbed my hand off his cheek and held it. "I know baby girl I know." He answered stroking my hand. "We've got to be more careful." I mumbled. He nodded with a hint of a smirk on his lips. "Yeah we do. Apparently a condom isn't fool proof." He said. I shook my head. "No Mr. Doctor it isn't." He chuckled. Hearing his laugh I couldn't help but smile. I tugged on his hand and pulled him back in the bed with me. He situated himself so we were in the same position me and Lexie were in. With us stretched out in the bed with the head up and his arm around me with my head resting on his shoulder. We sat in silence for a while before I said anything. "Let's run away together." I said longingly. "I'm ready whenever you are. We can leave right now if you want to." He answered definitely. A stray tear rolled down my cheek knowing this wasn't that simple. "I love Lexie and I love being her friend, but I wish she was married to someone else." I said my heart physically aching. He sighed. "I know." Was all he said. I lay my head back on his shoulder and we sat in silence.
