feat. the (feared) side job as an errand boy
“is mizukamiya sick?”
you asked as the boys looked at each other and slowly nodded. “... why didn't you tell me earlier?” you asked with pursed lips. “well, he told us to hide it from you because he didn't want to worry you...” sakanoue admitted with a pleading look (‘please spare me, please spare me’).
you sighed and massaged your temples, “if you guys are gonna be this stubborn then what's the point of me being here.” you mumbled and stood from the couch, grabbing a clean towel and a basin. “it's just a cold, why is she being–”
“akio, do you want me to wrap this towel around your neck and hang you upside down by the gates and cut your body in half starting from what's between your legs (the peewee ;-;) using a saw?” you asked with a (sickly) sweet smile. the boys flinched and avoided your gaze. “if you don't want me to do that, then come here and do me a favor.” fudou clicked his tongue before moving near you, “... what do you need me to do?”
“it's good that you catch up fast! okay so, i need you to go buy mizukamiya's medicine, as well as ice cream.” you said as you smiled at fudou. “what's the ice cream for?” he asked, scratching his head and looking away (which made you grab his chin and force him to look at you with his pretty jewel-like eyes).
“for . now go.” fudou only sighed as he nodded. you then giggled and went to go upstairs, but not before yelling: “buy capsules okay, not tablets, they taste bitter.”
—
“hey.”
you waved as soon as mizukamiya fluttered his eyes open. “... ma– na.. ger?” you immediately handed him a warm glass of water to help him with his dry throat. “how are you feeling?” you asked with concern lacing your voice.

“i feel hot and cold at the same time.” he said as you laugh, “of course, you're sick after all.” you said and took the towel from his forehead, squeezing it dry before soaking it in a bowl of cold water again.
“i thought i told them not to say anything to you...” he mumbled as you rolled your eyes, “as if that'd be enough to stop me from taking care of you lot.” you said as you flipped your hair in a jesting manner. “right... i forgot you're the stubborn type, manager.” he said as you only sighed, shaking your head.
the door opened making you smile, “finally. if you were a bit later, mizukamiya would've been already dead.” you said as you took the paper bag from fudou, who only glared at you.
“manager, how could you say that...” mizukamiya sighed.
you opened the bag and gasped, “oh my god, akio, i thought i told you not to buy tablets. i–” you massaged your temples and looked up to fudou, who was grinning. “i should've known you would do this...”
“well, i guess that's it for your side job as my errand boy, darling. see ya.” you said, pushing fudou out of the room, irked. “mizukamiya, sweetie, i'm so sorry but you have to drink your bitter medicine...” you said, passing the tablet over to the male.
“manager... you know i can drink bitter medicines unlike you, right..?”
“.. i was kidding.” you chuckled, handing him his glass of water as you waited for him to drink his medicine. “there... now you'll surely get better in no time.” you said, patting his head.
“go to sleep.” you whispered and pushed him gently back to bed. “but i'm not slee...” with a light tap on his forehead, mizukamiya fell asleep.

mizukamiya woke up to a sight of you asleep on the chair next to his bed. “feeling better?” he turned to see haizaki leaning against the wall with crossed arms. mizukamiya nodded and sat up, moving his arms up and down, confused.
“i feel lighter.” he said as haizaki nodded to your direction with a sigh, “she gave up on treating you naturally. she healed you with magic.”
“that explains why...” mizukamiya mumbled and watched you, but haizaki went and blocked his view (‘no one can stare at her sleeping face except for me’). “did she fall asleep while waiting for me to wake up?” mizukamiya asked as haizaki nodded, gathering you in his arms and picking you up gently.
“yeah. she was afraid you'd suffer from side effects due to heavy exposure to magic. she mentioned something like your body was maladjusted to mana.”* haizaki said as he walked towards the door, pushing it open with his foot. “i'll just tell her that you're good to go as soon as she wakes up.” and with that, he left.
“so he's the (over) protective type, huh.”
mizukamiya looked down at his newly changed clothes. he lifted his shirt and noticed the lightning shaped scar on his left hip missing.
“did she heal it..?”
* – i read in a fantasy novel that people can be maladjusted to mana. in mizukamiya's case, his body rejects (heavy amount of) mana.
a sleeping spell doesn't require using a lot of mana but healing does, which is why you were worried about him.

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
