《The Chance of Falling》Chapter Twenty Two

*Lilah POV*

I stumbled out of bed early Saturday morning, eager for breakfast as I quickly pulled on a pair of black muggle gym pants that I had stolen from Marlene and a dark blue sweater, jumping awkwardly around the room as I attempted to force my feet into my black converse without having to untie them.

"You alright there?" A voice timidly questioned, an amused yet shy look adorning her face.

"Just fine Evans," I smiled hesitantly, running a hand through my hair awkwardly.

"I assume you're getting ready for quidditch tryouts?" She tried to continue the conversation, playing with the hem of her green shirt.

"Shit! That's today?" I hurried around the room, getting ready as fast as I could.

"Yeah, it is. Did you forget?"

"Yeah, James said that he would-" I stopped, remembering his harsh words from the previous week.

"Remind you?" She finished for me, sensing my moment of vulnerability.

"Yeah, that," I waved off, tying my braid with a hair tie before heading towards the door. I saw Lily stand awkwardly by the foot of my bed, not sure what to do now. "Have you had breakfast yet?" I questioned softly, deciding to take pity on her.

"No," She shook her head, her eyes hopeful.

"Well come on then."

--

I raced out onto the pitch with my broom in hand, slightly out of breath.

Sirius raised his eyebrow at me from the front of the group, standing beside a very professional looking James, before the group split up.

James followed Sirius' line of sight, a scowl on his face once he saw me. "Great," he mumbled, stalking away.

"Git," I grumbled, glaring at his retreating figure.

What a bloody wanker.

"What position are you trying out for?" Sirius waltzed over to me, an easy grin lighting his face.

"Chaser," I replied, figuring that it was time to stop being petty. "You?"

Surprise flickered across his face before it lit up, "Beater," he mimicked swinging a bat.

"We're all good, yeah?" I asked hesitantly, glancing shyly up at him as I played with my hands.

"I'd like that, Lil' Lupin," He smiled fondly, messing my hair up affectionately.

"Hey!" I pouted up at him.

"We better get into our groups before James decides to brutally murder us," He laughed, pointing towards the fuming quidditch captain. "That's the chasers group, good luck!"

"You too!" I called over my shoulder, a happy smile lighting my face as I made my way over to the group.

I stopped at the group, taking the time to observe the four others trying out for a chaser position. The only female besides myself looked to be in her third year and also a little green – perhaps she was nervous? There was Frank Longbottom, a good friend of mine along with two boys who appeared around the same age as me and had a head full of ginger.

"Lilah!" Frank called out, waving at me to come closer. "I didn't know you were trying out for quidditch as well,"

"Yeah, Minnie asked me to," I bobbed my head awkwardly, shooting a small smile to the others.

"I'm Fabian," One of the gingers introduced himself.

"I'm Gideon," The other introduced.

"And we're the Prewett twins," They finished together, a cheeky smile gracing their lips.

"I'm Lilah," I waved with my free hand.

"Oh, we know," they replied at the same time, stuffing their hands into their pockets.

"You know?" I questioned curiously.

"Everyone knows who you are," The young girl answered this time, a nervous smile on her face. "I'm Poppy,"

"Nice to meet you," I smiled back before turning my attention to the first half of her sentence, "what do you mean everyone knows who I am?"

"Exactly that, your arrival wasn't exactly quiet," One of the twins joked, winking at me.

"You better not do that, Fab," Gideon warned.

"Why not?" He whined.

"If James catches you, we're both dead," he finished as Fabian stuffed the toe of his foot into the grass.

"He always gets the pretty ones," He grumbled, a pout pulling at his lips.

"Less talking, more practising!" James yelled, glaring fiercely at our group.

"Sheesh," Fabian mumbled under his breath, "what the hell did you say to him?" he shot a curious look at me.

"The truth," I shrugged, grasping my broom before mounting it and pushing off the ground.

"We like her," the twins grinned at Frank, earning a snort as he copied my previous actions, following me as I quickly rose into the air, ready for whatever James was about to throw at me.

--

"Far out," Frank whispered as he noticed Poppy throw up on the side of the pitch.

"That's kind of gross," I stated, wrinkling my nose in disgust as I made my way towards the girl. "Hey Poppy, let's get you to the infirmary, yeah?" Once she nodded, I slung an arm around her waist and pulled her to her feet.

"What do you think you're doing?" James thundered, flying down on his broom and coming at a standstill right in front of us.

"What does it look like? She's sick and I'm taking her to the infirmary so if you could get out the way, that'd be swell." I smiled sarcastically, tightening my grip on the ill girl.

"What are you? Her mother? I'm sure she can manage on her own, Lupin. If you haven't realised, tryouts aren't over yet," He snarled.

Last name basis, now? Shame, I didn't even know his.

What a fucking twat.

Has he always been this rude?

"And if I recall correctly you're not my father nor my boyfriend so I don't see why you'd have any input in my decisions," I tapped my chin in mockingly.

"Oh burn!" One of the quidditch players called out, laughing.

"Oh yeah? And where's your father now? Shacking up with the maid again? Or perhaps your boyfriend? Oh wait, it's ex-boyfriend now, isn't it?" He clicked his fingers together, a cruel smile pulling at his lips as he revealed something I had once told him in confidence to the quidditch team.

I stare at him in disbelief, forcing myself not to tear up at the verbal slap in the face. "You're such a fucking dick, I can't believe that I actually thought that we could be friends again. Obviously, I was wrong. And as for my father, he's in his grave at Godric's Hollow if you'd like to visit? I'm sure that'll just go splendidly, don't you think? Do you find amusement in the fact that my parents are dead?" I smile coldly, tightening my grip on Poppy, willing myself not to remember the horrors of the Great Battle.

I shot a glance towards Remus who sat beside a horror-stricken Lily in the stands, reminding myself that he was not my father.

James expression fell, remorse colouring his features. "I didn't-"

"Potter you dick!" The same guy called out.

Potter? For fuck sake, of course, it's him.

I glared at him incredulously, not wanting to believe that this man was the man that I would inevitably have Harry with.

"If you would excuse me," I shoved past him, dragging a sick Poppy along with me as I hurried off the field, compelling my breath to even and to not think about James and Harry – the two boys that were once meant to be mine.

However, it is apparent that times change. James Potter is not a man I could ever be with, and for that, I began to mourn the death of my best friend and my unborn child, for I knew that he would never come to be.
