《The Chance of Falling》Chapter Twenty

*Lilah POV*

"Amortentia?"

"A love potion that doesn't create true love but rather a hell serious infatuation," I answered, twiddling my quill between my fingers as I sat cross-legged on the library chair.

"And?" He prompted.

"You smell scents that you find rather appealing, it's usually a person. For example, I smelt parchment, incense and ink during class yesterday," I mumbled out, knowing exactly who I had smelt.

Jesse let out a sigh, "Nicholas,"

"Yeah," I forced out, my throat beginning to clamp up as I think about him and the way things had ended

"He still loves you, you know," Jesse stared at me, wishing that things would go back to the way it had once been.

I refused to acknowledge his comment, glancing around the library in hopes of a distraction.

"And apparently you still love him too," He finished, a look of pain morphing on his face. "Why won't you just fix things?"

I turned my head, looking upon him in outrage. "Me? Fix things? Are you actually serious right now?" I retorted indignantly.

"Yes! Stop being a selfish bitch and move past whatever the hell happened! You're both miserable about it and I won't let some little-"

"I'm the selfish bitch?" I cut off out, "You have no idea, do you?"

For once, I pitied Jesse. Sure he could be overbearing and hyperactive but he was as clueless and as naïve as they come, despite his status as a Ravenclaw.

"No idea of what?" He asked, no longer angry but curious.

I stood up from the table, stuffing my textbooks in my bag during the process. "Next time you see your so called best friend, ask him about the cute little mark he has on his forearm, I'm sure you'll just be delighted!" I only caught a look of shock register across his features before I turned from the table, instead wanting to seek out better company.

*James POV*

I stared out at the empty quidditch pitch, silently calling out for the rain to fall.

I began to scribble across the parchment with a pencil – a muggle invention that I find quite interesting and am rather fond of. I can even use another object called an eraser to wipe away the pencil markings! No magic required whatsoever.

Muggles were truly fascinating and have apparently adapted rather well to a magic free way of life.

As Gryffindor quidditch captain this year, it was my responsibility to figure out plays and the best and fastest possible way of scoring and defending.

It was difficult but I would rise to the challenge, determined to win the House Cup for my final year.

"What'cha up to?" A body slinked next to mine, dumping their bag by their feet.

"Just trying to figure out some plays," I smiled towards Lilah, loving the way her mouth formed a sweet smile in response.

She laughed, knocking into me as she replied, "But quidditch season hasn't even started yet! You don't even have a team to base the plays off,"

I grinned sheepishly, running a hand through my unruly hair as I admitted, "I'm kind of anxious about it,"

"Why's that?" She questioned, moving closer to me.

"I just- I- I don't know I guess," I mumbled, looking out towards the stands from my spot on the field. "I just don't want to let anyone down."

She grabbed my hand in hers, entwining her fingers with my own. "You'll do amazing James," she reassured.

"But how do you know that, though?" I looked down sadly, playing with her fingers.

"I know you James, despite not having spent much time together in these past two months, I know that you're as ambitious as a Slytherin, as loyal as a Hufflepuff, as smart as a Ravenclaw and most of all you're as brave as a lion. You can do this, you just have to believe it too," She breathed out, chocolate eyes reassuring and blue eyes adoring.

I glanced at her in pure awe, loving the flush to her cheeks and the determined glint in her eyes.

"Fuck," I swore under my breath as I came to realise the extent of my feelings for this one girl.

"What was that?" She asked, smiling as she adorably scrunched up her nose.

"Oh nothing, just thought that I felt something wet is all," I lied smoothly, nudging her with my shoulder.

She looked up at the sky, her hair falling down her back. "Well, it does look like it's about to rain."

Raindrops began to pitter patter all around us, the occasional one bouncing off of us.

Lilah squealed as one hit her face, "James! It's raining!" She yelled out, climbing to her feet hurriedly.

I laughed joyously at her reaction, loving the way her eyes lit up and her dimples were exposed as she grinned.

"Come on!" She tugged at me, desperately wanting to seek cover.

"Sit down!" I laughed out, I pulled softly at her hand, wanting her to sit down once more.

"Are you serious?" She called out, a disbelieving expression on her face.

"No, I'm James," I winked cheekily, laughing heartily as rain hit her eye.

"It's not funny," She pouted, leaning into my chest to protect herself from the rain.

"It kind of is," I pointed out, the grin never leaving my face. "Just enjoy it, Love. The beauty, the wonder, the nature. Just take a moment to let it all sink in. Appreciate the way it can revive life, how it restores health, how it's supposed to appear dreary yet it's so magnificent at the same time,"

I turned to face her, her cocked eyebrow mocking me.

"I never knew that you loved nature so much," She commented.

"Rain," I blurted out.

"What?" She questioned, snuggling further into my chest as I wrapped an arm around her.

"It's the rain that I love,"

And it's also you.
