《The Chance of Falling》Chapter Seventeen

*Lilah POV*
It was the last day of October today; I had officially been here for almost two months now.
I glanced around the male Ravenclaw dorm, the colour blue dominating the room – as was expected. I looked down at the man lying next to me, my hand gliding through his soft waves, a content smile lighting his face.
"I wish we could stay like this forever," he whispered, a sense of dread encompassing him.
"That sounds perfect," I sighed wistfully, delighted at the thought of escaping all my troubles for a while.
Almost two months ago I was facing Voldemort, ready to protect my best friend – my son at all costs.
I still couldn't quite cope with the thought of having a son older than me but now that I've been sent back to the past I guess that it does make some sense.
Harry's last name was Potter but Nicholas' last name was Livingston. Okay so that could potentially be an issue – maybe he changes his last name in the future?
Or maybe Nicholas and I just weren't meant to be – he was just a milestone, one that would soon come to pass.
"What's your pretty head thinking about?" His arms tightened around me, pulling me even closer into his chest.
"Just the future," I grinned, laughing silently.
"Oh yeah? Am I a part of that future?" He breathed into my ear, nudging my neck playfully.
Chocolate eyes met crystal blue and I knew then that he would play a vital role in my future – whether that was good or bad was yet to be determined.
"Hm," I teased, "I don't see-"
He quickly flipped us, his body pushing my own further into the mattress. He grinned down at me cheekily, long tanned fingers pushing stray strands of hair from my face. "Guess again," he mumbled before pushing his lips against my own, passion and lust quickly igniting.
*James POV*
"But I don't want cheese," I pouted, not accepting the cheese flavoured cracker offered to me.
"Take the damn cracker, would you? You've been complaining for hours!" Remus snapped, slamming his book shut.
"What's up your arse?" Sirius muttered, scooting his chair slightly to the left in an attempt to move further away from the angry werewolf.
Remus sighed, running a hand down his face tiredly. "I'm sorry for snapping, it's just this potions essay is killing me and I usually have help from-"
"From Lilah," I finished, my mood to diminishing into a sombre one.
"Yeah," He sighed once more.
"You still haven't talked to her?" Peter squeaked, shoving his last remaining pumpkin pastry into his mouth.
"No, I haven't. I haven't really had the chance."

"Of course you've had the chance, you just didn't want to take it and face the consequences of your actions," Peter retorted, shocking the group at his upfront reply.
"Excuse me?" Remus questioned, shocked at his friend's forwardness.
"It's just-" He began, struggling to find the appropriate words without offending his friend, "you've all been real gits and you don't want to accept that you have so you've been avoiding her as much as she's been avoiding you in hopes of avoiding finding out how much pain and damage you've caused. The opportunity has presented itself, several times in fact, yet you refuse to act on it."
"Oi Wormy, give him a break," Sirius defended his friend.
"No, he's right," I sighed out, running my hands through my hair stressfully. "We really fucked up," I rested my head in my hands.
"Ahem," Peter coughed out, shooting me a look.
"Everyone but Peter fucked up," I corrected, earning a nod from Peter as he continued to scribble on his parchment.
We had majorly screwed things up but hopefully once we've revealed the truth she'll forgive us and everything will go back to how it was at the start of the term.
"This is Lilah," Peter answered my thoughts, "she's not going to be thankful and she's not going to be forgiving of your scheming and blatantly ignoring her for the past month. She's really struggled with it, having to make new friends and all."
"And how would you know this?" I questioned, my tone coming out sharper than I had intended.
Peter flinched, reminding the group of his true shy nature despite his moment of bluntness, "Only because you lot weren't talking to her doesn't mean that I wasn't, we've actually become quite close," He smiled, reminiscing the days he had spent by the Black Lake with Lilah, Nicholas and Jesse.
"Right," Sirius mumbled, admittedly jealous of the boy.
"She won't believe you either, by the way. Just thought that I'd let you know," He stood, his chair squeaking as he pushed away from the rounded library table.
"Believe what?" Remus asked suspiciously, his hand tightening around his quill.
"That Nicholas is a death eater, of course," He replied casually, collecting his books from the table as he did so.
"How'd you know that?" I whisper shouted, sending a heated glare his way.
"You don't whisper as quietly as you'd like to think," He retorted, a smug smirk sliding its way onto his face. Plus, he added silently, he's my friend. He slung his books under his left arm, smoothly exiting the room.
"No way that's Wormy, someone's got to be using polyjuice for sure!" Sirius grunted out, annoyed at the change he's been noticing in his childhood friend.

"It's Nicholas' influence, it's got to be!" I mumbled, angrily scrunching up my piece of parchment.
"We've got to tell her, we have to," Sirius cried out, "If he's doing this to innocent Wormy who barely spends time with him, imagine what he's inflicting upon Little Lupin! She could be completely corrupted by now! She could be one of them! And we've just let it happen, right before our eyes!"
*Lilah POV*
I walked into the common room, a dreamy smile adorning my face after a wonderful afternoon spent with Nicholas.
Is it weird that just even the thought of him or the hearing of his name makes me swoon all over again?
Butterflies erupted in my stomach, biting my lip softly as I recall the day's events. He was so romantic and just so him – he was perfect, it doesn't matter if his last name wasn't Potter. Maybe the reason I was sent back was to alter the future? Maybe that way Lord Voldemort would never rise to power. Maybe it would save millions of lives. Maybe it would save the future – save my future. Nicholas was my future – that I was sure of.
My mind wondered towards James – the boy I once had a crush on at the beginning of the year, the boy, well rather man, who was once a close friend of mine despite not having known each other for a long period of time.
We had clicked, as I had with all the Marauders.
Did I miss them? Of course, but the real question was did I need them – and the answer to that one would be no. I did not need them but I rather wanted them in my life, they were not a necessity but more of a luxury one indulged in – one I no longer had.
But I did have Nicholas, a man I had been dating for almost a month and a half now. A man who had not left me without warning. A man who I trusted. A man who cared about me. A man that I believed I loved.
Were things happening too fast? Probably. Did I care? Not really.
With him, it felt right like it was meant to be. If he left me too I wouldn't be able to handle it. Not now, not when I was in too deep.
He was hiding something, though, but don't we all have our secrets?
I felt myself walk lazily towards the plush couch in front of the blazing fire, the dreamy smile still in full effect.
However, with the marauders fast approaching I had a feeling that it wouldn't last long.
"Hey Lil' Lupin, how've you been?" Asked Sirius, jumping over the back of the couch and into the spot next to me, throwing his arm around my shoulders.
"Pretty good actually, life's been fantastic," I fake smiled, shifting so that his arm fell off me and onto the couch. I moved to get up, ready to head to my dorm before I was pulled back roughly onto the couch.
"Ow!" I winced, rubbing my wrist, glaring up at the culprit.
"Sorry," Sirius mumbled apologetically.
"Right," I drawled sarcastically, shifting further down the couch to put a large amount of space between us.
What am I? A person that they can talk to whenever they please? A person used for their convenience? I don't think so.
"Did you need something?" I spat harshly at the group, refusing to meet the eyes of my father – sorry, the eyes of Remus.
This man was not my father.
"Look, you can be as angry as you want but please, please just hear us out?" Sirius begged, jutting his lip out in a small pout.
"And why should I?" I retorted, forcing a cold and cool façade.
"Because you once trusted us so just trust us this one more time, alright? We've discovered something and despite us being real shit best friends lately, we've been doing our best to protect you so just hear us out," James bit his lip, suddenly feeling shy holding her attention for the first time in over a month.
"No, I don't owe you anyth-"
"Your boyfriend is a death eater!" Sirius blurted out, covering his mouth in shock. "Whoops?"
My boyfriend is a death eater? Sure.
"Idiot!" Remus yelled out, hitting Sirius on the back of the head.
"Yeah, good going," James mumbled.
"Nice one," I chuckled darkly, fed up with their attempt to ruin the one good thing in my life.
I lost my family, I lost my friends, I lost them, I lost my son and now I might loose Nicholas?
Screw them.
"Who do you think you are?" I asked calmly, a deadly gleam shining in my eyes as I stood from the couch to look at the group. "That you can just talk to me whenever you like? That I'm only here for your convenience? Well, guess what, I'm not! I've got new friends that actually care about me and I've got an amazing boyfriend who I'm in love with," I laughed darkly, tears stinging my eyes as James winced, "and the last thing I need is you guys trying to stir some shit just for a laugh so thanks for that, really. Goodnight."
I exited the common room, tumbling down the stairs hurriedly.
There was only one person I wanted to be with now– and that was Nicholas

This novella is in it's first draft so if it's a bit rough around the edges that's why. I just want to get some feedback on it as well as what's working. Each chapter can be very stylistically different from each other as a means of separating the different months that each chapter takes place to better put the reader into the headspace of Arthur.
