《The Chance of Falling》Chapter Five

*Lilah POV*

The sun woke me in the early morning, cocooning me in its warm embrace as it gently nudges me awake.

I stretch my arms as I sit up in my bed, stifling a yawn as I ran my hand over my bedhead. I looked around the room, noticing that I was oddly placed in the same one that I was roomed in whilst I was in the future.

I took a moment to take in my roommates who were already asleep by the time I got in last night, most likely trying to get a good night's rest before the second day's classes.

Today was the second of September, the second day of the year. As if that wasn't going to make me noticeable, I was in Seventh Year – a year I had basically already completed.

Well at least if the content was the same I didn't have to study or try too hard considering I'd already learnt it.

I quietly got of bed, moving slowly and softly as to not disturb my new roommates before making my way to the bathroom to prepare for my fist day. After getting ready, I apprehensively turned towards the bathroom door, fully aware of the fact that my new roommates were surely awake now. Well, here goes nothing I guess.

I twisted the handle, not wanting to dawdle any longer. I swung the door open and walked to the foot of my bed where my bag lied patiently.

A soft cough caught my attention, swivelling my head towards the red head that was staring at me curiously. "Hello, are you new?" She questioned.

No shit, I thought sarcastically

I forced a polite smile on my face before answering, "Yeah, I'm Lilah."

"Lily Evans," she greeted before gesturing to the blonde, "that's Marlene," and finally waving towards the girl who was only waking up. "That's Alice."

I hesitantly smiled at them, the possibility of one of these girls being my mother running through my mind.

Marlene quickly zipped up the back of her skirt, positioning herself in front of her mirror to do her makeup.

"So where'd you transfer from?" Marlene questioned, tracing the outer curve of her eyebrow with her angled brush.

"Beauxbatons actually," I replied smoothly, having previously prepared answers.

"Oh! What was it like?" She squealed excitedly, turning to face me.

"It was just marvellous! The guys were like super cute!" I fake gushed.

"Maybe I should transfer," she muttered thoughtfully, a cheeky grin tilting at her lips.

Lily swatted the side of her head with a pillow before jumping on Alice – the girl who happened to still be in bed sleeping.

"Alice," she drew out softly, trying to coax her awake.

"If you don't get up I'll get Longbottom," Marlene threatened, apparently taking a different approach than Lily.

"Okay," Alice grumbled quietly, closing her eyes once more.

"And he'll get to see your lovely morning appearance, he'll especially love the drool." Marlene teased.

Alice mumbled incoherently, tiredly waving her hand in dismissal, not bothering to register Marlene's threats.

Marlene jumped up from her position in front of the mirror, quickly making her way towards the door.

A grin lit up my face as I realised that she was, in fact, going through with her threat, I'd definitely have to remember that she wasn't one to bullshit.

"Oh, Frank!" She called out the door singingly.

A chuckle tore out my throat as I watched Alice jump out of bed, frantic at the sound of her friend calling out for this Frank guy. Perhaps he was her boyfriend? She raced to get dressed, quickly running a brush through her hair and brushing her teeth before starting on her makeup.

Marlene smiled victoriously before bouncing back to her previous position, continuing the art of drawing on her eyebrows.

I sat on the corner of my bed, keeping an eye on the time so that I wouldn't be late for meeting up with James.

I twiddled my fingers awkwardly as I watched the girls interact, seeming to have known each other for years. Well, I guess they had, it's their seventh year as dorm mates so they're bound to be great friends.

Marlene turned towards me after swatting Lily with her foundation brush, a smile lighting up her soft features. "Would you like me to do your makeup?" She asked.

I looked at her shocked, before forcing out a reply. "You don't have to but I guess if you want to go for it." I shrugged, not particularly fussed.

She leaped up, dragging me enthusiastically in front of her makeup supplies, forcing me to sit down in the chair she was just occupying.

"I love doing people's makeup! I can't wait to have a daughter, I would do her makeup all the time and teach her to apply everything perfectly." She sighed wistfully, a dreamy crossing her features.

"Where'd you learn to do your makeup?" I asked curiously.

"My mother, of course, didn't your mother teach you?" She replied kindly, a concentrated look on her face as she worked her magic.

My face instantly dropped at the question, knowing that I never had the opportunity to do such things with my mother. "I-um-I- She died before she could." I coughed out awkwardly, not wanting to ruin everyone's happy atmosphere.

A look of understanding shone on her face, "What was she like?"

"I'm not really sure, to be honest, I only know snippets from my father that I managed to drag out of him when he was drunk. Other than that, she was someone that nobody dared to mention. I do know that she was kind, that she was extremely beautiful and that she was the love of my Dad's life. He went to school with her actually but they never really took notice of one another until their final year. She was fiery, that was for sure." I chuckled, remembering the few stories uncle Sirius shared with me once.

"She sounds lovely," Marlene whispered, a soft smile gracing her face. "All done."

I stood up, turning to face the mirror. My skin looked flawless, free of any blemishes. My eyes were rimmed with eyeliner, eyelids shimmering softly in the light. I looked pretty good; it was way better than anything I could've done.

"Thanks," I smiled appreciatively.

"It's no worries, always happy to help." She waved dismissively as she tugged her hair up in a messy ponytail.

"Would you like to have breakfast with us, Lilah?" Lily questioned, slipping on her socks.

"Thanks for the offer but I promised to meet James and sit with him," I replied, evoking a disgruntled look from Lily.

"That toerag?" She demanded, a horrified look taking residence on her face.

Alice began laughing, red lighting up her face from the lack of air whilst Marlene stared at me suspiciously as I twirled my hair around my index finger.

"Yeah, he's my friend. We met yesterday." I explained, not allowing Lily to change my mind.

"Whatever you say, you're welcome to sit with us at any point though if you'd like." Lily amended, nodding in my direction.

"Thanks," I checked the time to find that I had only moments before I was to leave to meet up with James. I bent down and picked up my bag, slipping it over my shoulder before saying goodbye and walking out the dorm.

I sauntered down the stairs casually to find James at the foot of the girls steps waiting for me, a hand on hip and tapping his foot in mock anger. "What is this, Lupin? First day and you're already late." He gestured towards his watch.

I stopped on the step in front of him, my head now reaching his nose as I looked up at him and glared playfully. I reached down his body to his arm, his sharp intake of breath eliciting a smug smirk on my lips. I gently tugged his wrist upwards, checking the time on his watch. 7:59AM.

"Oh would you look at that," I drawled playfully as it hit 8:00AM. "Right on time."

James laughed before swinging an arm over my shoulder, directing me towards the common room's exit.

"Oi Prongs! Little Lupin! Ditchers are bitches who end up dead in ditches." Sirius called, annoyed that they hadn't waited for him.

He caught up quickly, swinging his arm over my shoulder. He glanced down at me, doing a double take.

I rolled my eyes, "Of course a girl is going to look different without dirt and mud on her, idiot." I swatted his chest in mock anger.

He chuckled, nodding his head in agreement. "Off to breakfast," He yelled excitedly, tugging her free from James' hold, forcing me to run with him towards the dining hall. I laughed happily at Sirius' annoyance at my slow pace, already aware that I was a pretty shit runner. He stopped suddenly as I collided with his back and hit my nose.

I glared angrily, rubbing my now sore nose as I shot a look over my shoulder to a laughing James.

"Run any slower, Love?" James teased as he once again swung his arm over my shoulders.

"Why of course, want me to show you?" I retorted sarcastically, chuckling softly as Sirius began running once more to the awaiting buffet.

I think I may just enjoy this era.
