《Taking Over Me | Camille O'Connell》Chapter Six

Over the next few weeks, Antoinette began to feel a sort of change within herself. It was a small, subtle thing, yet it felt enormous to her. Little by little, she began to go out more, and spend less time cooped up in the apartment. She loved walking around outside, through the streets of the French Quarter, and soaking in the sun.

Marcel certainly noticed these changes, and made no comments on the subject, but she knew he was happy with her sudden change in mood and habit. Davina and Josh both seemed surprised and happy about it.

"Are you feeling all right?" Josh asked her. The three of them had gone out to lunch together, and they had both seemed a little surprised when Antoinette immediately agreed to come along, no convincing necessary.

"Of course I am," Antoinette answered. "You don't think I'm sick, do you?"

"No, we don't," Davina answered, shooting Josh a look. "We were just...kind of surprised you agreed so easily to being out in public. We usually have to fight you on it."

"Oh. Well, maybe I'm just in a better mood."

Truthfully, Antoinette wasn't entirely certain what the cause of this change was. But then she supposed it had been coming, anyway. She could remember back when she first turned. She barely spoke a word to Marcel and wanted nothing to do with him. But, luckily for them both, he was persistent, and got her open up to him.

Marcel had known from the beginning that she had gone through some kind of trauma in her human life. He knew it was serious enough for him to have to take her to a psychologist. However, Antoinette refused to cooperate in any way whatsoever, so after a few sessions Marcel gave up on that one. He did get her to talk to him, but only small parts of her life story. It was enough for him to understand, though, what had happened to her.

Later on, she met both Davina and Josh, and found herself liking them both. They didn't questions, didn't try to pry into her old life, and she began to consider them her friends.

But now something else felt different. It wasn't any of the friends she already had; it was Antoinette herself. And whatever was happening to her, it had something to do with Camille O'Connell.

Camille O'Connell, the lovely woman she had met at that Mikaelson party. She was in Antoinette's thoughts more than she would care to admit. If Cami was at Rousseau's, Antoinette would casually drop in if she ever had the chance. If Cami called her, she instantly forgot whatever she was doing and hit 'answer'. If it was one of the mornings where Cami took those morning walks, and if she asked Antoinette to join her, she would join without any hesitation.

Antoinette had no idea what it was about Camille O'Connell that made her feel this way. Maybe she was lonelier than she realized, or maybe she had become so withdrawn from society that she didn't know how to act anymore. She was just happy about having a new friend, she figured, so she wanted to spend as much with Cami as possible.

But then she thought more about it. She loved Cami's sweet smile, her bright eyes, her laugh, the way the sunlight highlighted the colors in her blonde hair...

An infatuation. That was all it could be. This couldn't be love. Antoinette knew what love felt like, and this wasn't it. It couldn't be.

She didn't think she could bring herself to fall in love again.
