《Enigmatic: Sapphire City Supers》Chapter 24: Kenna the Wrecking Ball

I found myself in the park on the edge of dusk, seemingly alone. I knew that was wrong for two reasons; since I could feel the comforting presence of Enigma hovering close beside me, and since within a few seconds of my arrival a shape materialised from behind one of the trees and shuffled towards me.
He was afraid of me; I could see it in his eyes, and it gave me a flash of satisfaction.
"You're here without any of the Supers?" He asked a little suspiciously, though I can't say I blame him.
"As you see," I gestured around me. It was a bending of the truth, shall we say.
He peered about like he didn't quite believe me.
"I just want my brother," I growled. "Let's get this over with."
"Alright, then," he conceded. "I have to touch you to make the jump, just so you know. So don't like, take my arm off or anything, okay?"
I bared my teeth at him in a semblance of a smile, glad he was already intimidated. "It's tempting, but I'll resist." He was such a bad Villain. I felt Enigma press right up behind me and wrap his arms around my waist so that he'd make the jump too, and my smile became a little more real.
"We'll go now, then." He stepped forward and put his hand on my shoulder.
Though I'd never teleported before, it felt a lot like when I folded space, so it didn't throw me too much besides a slightly whirling stomach.
It clenched harder when I saw Seb trapped in one of Electron's forcefields.
"Good evening, Kenna," Morgan's smooth voice came from beside me. "So glad you decided to join us."
"I won't be here long, you piece of human garbage," I said civilly, with a broad smile. Two could play this game.
Hisses came from the room. I counted five besides Morgan. Spotting Sonic, I said a quick thank you to Gareth's team. Poison was there as usual, plus Jumper, Electron and man I'd seen when they tried to jump me in the park. Six against two seemed like decent odds here.
Out loud, I laughed. "You've got your peanut gallery out in full force, haven't you? The baddie life must not be as alluring as it used to be, but I give you that your peons are pathetically loyal." I cast a scathing eye around the room. Poison, ever cool, winked. Electron caught my eyes and held them, before I looked away.
"I take it you aren't here to acquiesce to my request? At least, not willingly." Morgan's pleasant voice held a slight edge.
"I'm just here for Seb. The rest you can go screw yourself over," I gave him an angelic smile.
"He's a bit stuck at the moment." Morgan allowed himself a satisfied smile, like the cat that got the canary.
"We'll see," I replied. "Seb, you okay?"
"Peachy," he said grumpily. That made me feel better, since they obviously hadn't hurt him, though he did seem to be sporting a bit of a shiner. Probably a result of the tussle in getting him there. I suspected Electron might have a matching one under his mask.
"Right. Hold tight." I caught Electron's eye and smirked before I began pushing the web of his forcefield off of Seb, like I'd done for myself. I hadn't been sure that I could do it, but after a few moments, I could see and feel it lifting and drifting off.

"Thanks, Sis," Seb grinned, before twisting his torso, flexing his limbs and back flipping theatrically out of his prison.
"Showboating runs in the family, I'm afraid," I explained to the stunned room.
"What is this?" Morgan hissed to Electron, looking genuinely put out.
"I've never seen it before," the latter said helplessly.
"Viper!" Morgan commanded.
I didn't know what he meant, until it felt as though I'd been hit by a freight train. The Villain drove me into the floor, knocking all the wind out of me instantly. I shuddered to think what it would feel like for an ordinary human.
"Kenna!" yelled Seb, as he dashed forward, but the weight was lifted off of me before he could get there, as Viper was flung by a seemingly invisible force.
"So you didn't come alone, after all? I'm disappointed in you, Kenna," Morgan purred.
"Oh are you?" I said from the floor in a deadly calm voice. "Well then, Morgan, allow me to make it much worse for you."
Everyone in the room, except for Seb, Morgan and Enigma (presumably - I still couldn't see him) was suddenly knocked off their feet, while I climbed back onto mine. I looked around the room at all the various lair paraphernalia and then locked eyes with Morgan as everything began to float into the air.
Then, I started smashing. Objects flew about and dashed themselves against walls. Papers tore out of books and folders. I pulled Morgan's cell phone out of his pocket and watched with grim satisfaction as it shattered on the ground. Chairs upended and tables overturned. Chaos reigned as the room tore itself apart as if in a hurricane, with me as its eye. Standing there like a modern day Prospera, I watched Morgan through the tempest before telling him exactly what I'd been waiting to since I'd arrived.
"Stay away from me and my loved ones, or I'll make you rue the day you ever set eyes on me with your ridiculous 'schemes,' Morgan." The effort of it all was starting to make my brain hurt, but I kept my face steely. I saw the other Villains beginning to fight through, and I knew I wouldn't be able to hold them and cause a virtual storm for much longer.
Sonic, who must have been taken aback by being tossed and pinned to the ground, chose that moment to come to her senses and scream. Thankfully, the ear devices worked as promised and I said a silent prayer of gratitude once more to those sciencey people at Gareth's. Instead of ear-splitting horror, I was treated to more of a pleasant, low hum. Unfortunately for Seb, he'd obviously been caught unprepared, and I saw him drop to the floor in distress. I let some of the furniture drop and diverted that energy to pull Sonic up into the air, letting her dangle upside down.
"Please stop that, we're over it now," I quipped. To my surprise, she complied, having let out of a whoop of surprise as I'd flipped her into the air.
Morgan was wearing a deep scowl now, but couldn't seem to think of anything to do about it all.
I could feel my hands starting to shake now and as a wave of exhaustion rolled over me, I realised just how many of them there were to fight. An idea hit with the force of Viper, and I turned to Seb, who'd staggered back up wearily. "Could you hit the power please, Seb? Let's get out of here."

"With pleasure," he grinned, raising his arms and letting mighty bolts of sparking electricity shoot from his fingers. The flickers shone in Morgan's eyes as he looked on greedily, despite himself. Then, the lights went out.
"Enigma?" I called out, hoping he could find us and phase us out through the walls. I dropped everything in the room with relief. Clearly I was out of practice.
"Not quite so fast, Kenna," Morgan's voice interrupted. "Poison?"
"That was a mistake, sweetheart," a dulcet voice breathed into my ear, and then the dark of the room melted into nothingness.
***
My head was swimming, and my chest felt heavy with the weight of a nearby malevolence. The only things I knew for sure was that I was lying on a cold, hard floor and that someone sinister was lurking close by.
With an effort, I wrenched open my eyes and found a face hovering over mine with a malicious grin.
"Why hello, Kenna," Shadow purred.
"What are you doing here, Samantha?" I forced out through gritted teeth, though I couldn't bring myself to move my limbs yet. Poison had really done a number on me this time.
"Would you believe me if I told you I was guarding you?" she asked with false innocence. "No, probably not. Nobody ever said you weren't smart. You might be interested to know, though, just how much I've had to do with your current predicament." Examining her nails idly, she waited for the penny to drop.
It only took a moment. "You've been working with Morgan, stealing files and feeding him information, haven't you?"
"Got it in one, well done you. Naturally, being assigned to your little guard team was a stroke of luck, and made it a whole lot easier to help bring in your brother." The glint in her eyes grew brighter, but she danced back away after a glance at the look on my face.
"You traitorous, cowardly, little scum creature," I hissed, making the pain in my head magnify. "Pathetic, you and your withered soul. Was Greg in on this too?"
"Oh, you wound me," Shadow exclaimed sarcastically, clasping a hand to her chest (still out of arm's reach, I noticed). "No, Greg is disgustingly Super at heart. Boring, really. Morgan offered a whole lot more excitement."
At that moment, I'd never met another person who more truly embodied the phrase, 'some people just like to watch the world burn.' My whole body hurt, as I forced myself to sit up. With every ounce of effort I could squeeze out of my protesting head, I pushed Shadow backwards telekinetically.
As she stumbled, alarm flashed across her face for the first time. Maybe she'd thought I was too incapacitated to retaliate or maybe she'd forgotten what I could really do, but now the smug look had disappeared.
I revelled in that small victory, for the truth was that the poison hangover had zapped most of my strength. Just then, footsteps in the next room caught both our our attention.
Shadow glanced behind her, and then back at me. "Well, I'd love to stay and catch up some more, Kenna, but I think that's my cue to leave." She promptly disappeared, and I could feel all that malevolent energy racing away to the far doorway.
"Yeah, run away, you garbage person, and don't show your garbage face near me or Seb ever again," I growled after her, letting myself drop back to the floor as both Seb and Enigma appeared through the other door.
"Kenna, thank god!" In an instant, both were at my side, and Enigma's face hovered over mine, his hands on either side of my face. "I'd ask if you were okay, but I did just hear you threatening an empty room."
I laughed and winced immediately after as a pain shot through my head. "I was talking to Shadow. That trash monster has been working for Morgan and helped them take you out, Seb. She was here to gloat a minute ago; you just missed the pleasure of seeing her."
Seb scowled darkly. "I should have known something was up with her. She's too evil to be a Super."
"We'll have to tell Gareth right away. What a mess that psycho has created," said Enigma, still looking more concerned with examining my head. "How are you feeling? I'm so sorry we let Poison get to you; she took us all by surprise with her sneakiness."
"It was my own fault. I got cocky." I gingerly sat up again, with the support of Enigma's hand behind my back. "I'm okay, just a little messed up from the kickback of the dose she gave me." Suddenly, I realised exactly where I was, despite the dim lighting. "What exactly happened, and why was I knocked out in the museum basement?" The truth dawned in my cotton filled brain, and I groaned. "Oh no..."
Enigma and Seb looked grim.
"Well, as soon as Poison put you under, Morgan yelled at Jumper to grab you and teleport. There was only one place he could be taking you, so I got Seb and we phased our way out under camouflage and then flew straight here. Unfortunately, they were faster and I think they got what they wanted," Enigma answered. "But we'll have to check now. Seb, could you turn on the light in that section there that we put the tablet in?"
"Sure thing." Seb's hands glowed until the light bulb began to glow and burn brightly over the shelves.
"I meant flip the light switch, but that works too, Zeus," Enigma said dryly.
"Guess the cat's out of the bag there too, huh." I couldn't help but smile a little.
"That your brother is also my esteemed colleague? You surprise me with every layer you peel back, little onion," Enigma quipped. "I also understand now how you seem to know everyone on the team despite your disdain for us all."
"I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that meddling Morgan," I grumbled half seriously.
"Bad news, guys," Seb interrupted, brandishing a notably empty box.
I swore under my breath and let my head sink back into Enigma's hands. "They must have brought me here unconscious and used me as a homing device. How the hell did I let this happen?"
"Hey, you didn't do this, Kenna. None of what happened was your fault. If anything, it's mine because I wasn't keeping my guard up," Seb protested.
Enigma wasted no time in telling both of us off. "Martyr complexes, both of you. Neither of you are responsible; Morgan and his cronies have to shoulder all of the blame here. Kenna, all you wanted was to rescue Seb, and they knew that and took advantage. There were five of them and you did the best you could, which was pretty damn terrifying, in an awesome way. Seb, getting jumped by a team of Villains who were being helped from the inside is hardly anything to be ashamed of. We ought to have realised that they'd target you when they couldn't get through to Kenna. Of course, I didn't know that you were also part of Kenna's security team, but that was your business."
"However it happened, that psycho has the tablet now, and he knows exactly where to find the amulet. If we're not extra careful, he'll get exactly what he wants," I groaned, pressing my hands over my face. Whatever Enigma said, I was still wracked with guilt and feeling angry with both myself and Morgan.
"Did you just say, 'we'?" Enigma asked with a touch of amusement, gently peeling my hands off my face and rubbing his thumbs across their palms. When I opened my eyes I saw Seb raise his eyebrows at me from behind Enigma's back. I ignored him.
"I can hate it all I want, but this is my business now. He made this personal, and it's time to stop ignoring it and to start actively working against him. Plus, I think there's about to be a vacancy on the team," I joked darkly.
"Not that you're actually joining," Enigma clarified, the amusement growing stronger in his voice.
"I think I'd faint from shock," Seb drawled sarcastically.
"Oh, that'd be reason enough for me," I shot back sweetly.
"It sounds like you're feeling better," Enigma chuckled.
I tested that theory a bit, sitting up and noticing that my head felt considerably less fuzzy. This buoyed me enough to start moving and flexing my limbs about. He was right; I felt a lot better. Gingerly, I pushed myself all the way onto my feet, blinking my way through a slight head rush but otherwise okay.
"Poison must have hit me with something special today," I muttered. "I can't say I enjoyed the trip."
"We'll have to watch out for her, that's for sure," Enigma said. "I can't say she's endeared herself to me, all things considered."
"She's damn sneaky," I added.
"Kenna, we should get you home to rest up a bit, and then I'm sure Gareth will want to talk to you." Seb came up and hugged my head into his chest. "And, thank you for kicking ass for me today."
"Talking to Gareth will never not sound like nails on a chalkboard for me, I'm afraid. And you're welcome, Sebby. You know I'd do anything for you even if you're a pain in the ass. Are you okay?" I extricated my poor battered head from his grip and ruffled his hair gently. Taking a look at his developing shiner, I voiced my earlier suspicion. "Did you get into it with Electron a little?"
He poked the tender area gently with a grin. "We might have punched each other in the face a little bit, yeah. I won't say I've never been better, because I'm tired and hungry and pissed off, but I'm totally fine. They mostly tormented me with their Evil lameness. That one called Jumper makes the dumbest jokes."
"I've named him Dopey," I grinned.
Both of the guys laughed at that, and though we all knew that something Bad with a Capital B had just happened there, we left feeling at least a little bit cheerful in each other's safe presence.

Sorry for the wait, everyone! I was away on holiday and then back at work the last couple days so I'm finally getting the chance to post.
So:
Kenna, basically:
Some serious shenanigans going down here... did anyone suspect who the mole was?
Cat's out of the bag now with Seb and Enigma ... do they know each other in "real life" too?
Hmm.

Naturally, it features very overpowered characters with a lot of high stakes battles roaming across the cosmos. Warning: Swearing, some suggestive sexual gestures/words, gore. Feedback is highly welcomed. (The story was originally named, God's Return, but I wanted to change it.)
