《Enigmatic: Sapphire City Supers》Chapter 16: A Case of the Feels, and Other Surprises

Thankfully, the rest of the week went by swiftly and uneventfully until Saturday, when it was time for Seb's big swim meet.
The whole crew piled into the stands to cheer him on; Tristan, Grant, Ewan, Lexa, Grace and Stu. I found myself packed in between Lexa and Ewan. It was a busy event and the stands were full of noisy, excited friends, family and fans.
We chatted through some of the other events until it was time for one of Seb's heats. He won this one handily, though he'd face faster swimmers in the final.
"Woooo Seb!!" Lexa shouted beside me.
"Are you ever going to do anything about this?" I asked in a low, amused voice.
Obviously not low enough. "About what?" Ewan cut in curiously from my other side.
"Mind your bees, Hamilton," Lexa snapped, and then she glared at me pointedly.
"That usually makes people more curious, you know," he said mildly.
I elbowed him, and he turned away trying to hide a smile.
"No, I don't even know if he's interested," Lexa hissed to me.
"Okay well, I'm related to him and I can tell you he's a dumbass in a lot of ways, so you're probably going to have to just take a leap at some point," I muttered back.
"I'll file that one away," she said grumpily, and I chuckled. I just hated seeing her pining away and never doing anything about it. They both deserved to be happy.
Finally it was time for one of my favourite events, the 400m relay swim. Seb was the anchor on his team, so he swam last. There was always something exciting about the relay, maybe because there were so many variables to it.
This time was no exception. Seb's team got off to a poor start and quickly fell to third place by the next lap. The two in between did some hustling and by the time it came to Seb, they'd worked up to second. My heart was in my mouth as he shot off the line, and I grabbed both Ewan and Lexa's hands and squeezed them tight. Lexa was cheering wildly and I was muttering encouragement, too tense to yell. Ewan squeezed back, and I could hear him laughing at me.
When, in the final few seconds Seb pulled ahead to win it, I jumped up, dragging Lexa and Ewan with me, then let go of their hands to bounce around cheering. I hugged Lexa first, and then Ewan, tightly and joyfully. It felt as though Ewan was surprised, before his arms came around me and his hands settled against my back.
"You make a good cheer squad," he grinned down at me.
"If you want, I can come to the reopening of your exhibit and shout and jump about a bit," I joked.
He made a show of considering it. "You know, it might unnerve people in that case, rather than get them fired up." His eyes twinkled with amusement.
"Well, the offer stands so just let me know." I fought back a sudden and confounding urge to push back a piece of his hair that had fallen down onto his forehead. It so disconcerted me that I let him go immediately and occupied myself with smoothing my own hair nervously as we all sat back down.
I turned round to find Lexa's eyes on me. "That was weird," she whispered suspiciously. "Do I have to have a talk with you now?"
"Nope," I said hurriedly. "Oh look, something else is starting!"

"Uh huh," she answered slowly, but let it drop.
Later, I walked alone in the twilight back to the apartment, since Seb had to stay behind to talk to Jo and do all of his cool down activities. I assumed some sort of security detail was hanging about, since this was basically the prime time for Morgan and his goons to try something. I could have hopped in a cab but I liked to walk.
Right on cue I felt a presence beside me, and a voice said in my ear, "boo!"
"Nice try," I laughed at Enigma as he materialised.
He looked distinctly disappointed. "Nothing?"
"It's hard to sneak up on me unless I'm distracted," I grinned.
"Well I'm afraid that, once more, I've been ordered to walk you home," he said with an air of remorse.
"Yeah, I'm resigned to my fate at this point," I teased. "Could be worse; I also know that at any point, it could be Shadow."
"Glad you think I'm better than that."
"You'll do." I pushed him lightly on the shoulder. "You should have been my security at Seb's swim meet, though! Exciting times were had by all."
"Including me; I was there. Camouflage, remember?"
"Riiiight. That is seriously handy for being a lurker, huh?" I suddenly wondered if he'd seen me hugging Ewan. For some reason, it seemed to matter.
"Uh, we prefer Top Secret Kenna Super Safety Elite Squad, actually." He seemed perfectly at ease. Of course he did; it was me who was overthinking it all.
"That's a bit of a mouthful."
"You're right," he pretended to think about it for a moment. "How about just Kenna Squad?"
"Oh god," I laughed. "Please don't."
"We'll see," the gold of his eyes seemed to sparkle with amusement.
We walked a few minutes in companionable silence, and I thought about how he hadn't even asked why he was ordered to follow me around; he'd just seemingly taken it in good humour along with everything else.
With a deep breath, I took the plunge. It'd been so long since I even thought of revealing myself to somebody that I felt distinctly nervous.
"Enigma?" I asked.
"Mmm?" He murmured.
"Don't you want to know why?"
"Why what?"
"You must be curious about what you're doing here, keeping an eye on some girl who says she wants nothing to do with Supers and yet is on a Villain's list." I chanced a look at him.
He was watching me quietly. "Well, I'm only (mostly) human, but I figured it's your business and if you wanted to tell me you would. I'm just here to help if you need it."
It was like he was reading from a book on How to Make Kenna's Heart Beat Faster. He didn't fight fair, and I wasn't sure if he was even aware of that.
I sighed. "Okay, come on and I'll tell you. Secrets for secrets."
We got to the apartment building and I ushered him inside, ignoring Stan's questioning look as I pushed the fully kitted Super towards the elevators.
"Now that guy is really suspicious of me," Enigma quipped.
"See, I don't even really need you guys since I've got Stan looking out for me, but that's going to look weird on the CCTV," I joked, still feeling nervous about what I was going to show him.
I unlocked the door to the apartment and he followed me in.

"Want some tea?" I asked automatically.
"Uhh, okay, thanks." He looked confused.
The kettle flicked itself on, and I saw him stare at it for a moment.
"This is the place I share with Seb. I'll show you around." By the time I was finished taking him on a tour, the kettle had boiled. When we got into the kitchen, there were mugs waiting on the counter. I stood and poured the tea, then passed him one.
"Were those always there?" He asked.
I just smiled and sipped my tea.
As he went to take a sip, the liquid in his mug started to bubble, as if it was boiling all over again. He quickly put it down.
"Kenna, I think my tea is broken."
"Shoot, try mine," I offered it out to him.
He put it down again almost right away.
"Your house is weird." The tilting edges of his mouth curved a little higher. He seemed to know I was playing with him somehow.
"Okay, forget the tea. Come with me," I grabbed his hand and pulled him back out into the stairwell.
I led him up into the rooftop garden. Strings of little globe lights were set up to decorate the walls and run overhead in dipping lines, like a ceiling of stars. I switched these on mentally as we arrived, so it all lit up.
"Alright," he breathed out, "not bad."
"Not as good a view as your place, but nobody's going to kick us out," I teased.
"That's debateable," he said. I was too nervous to even touch what he meant by that.
I put my hands on his upper back and pushed him over to a spot between the fountain and the rose arbour.
"Stay there," I ordered, then took a deep breath in and out.
"Kenna ..." he started.
"Shush. Secret time."
So that he would understand just what was happening, I put out my hand and twisted my fingers. A thin, silky ribbon of water snaked its way up out of the fountain, followed by two more that began to intertwine into a braid that shimmered in the reflected light.
I heard him take a quiet breath in, but I was just getting started. The water ribbons wove their way over and began to wrap themselves up and around him, not quite touching him. I raised my hands to lift the scattered petals off of the ground, and shook the roses above him to loosen more. They fell into their own breeze that danced in a spiral all around his body, then all dropped at once to flutter over him. He put his hands out to catch them, wordlessly. I picked up more petals and leaves mixed in with individual droplets of water, and spun them until they created a gentle vortex that surrounded him, the air blowing against the loose fabric of his hood. I lifted him just slightly, so that his feet didn't quite touch the ground, then put him softly back down. I let my hands fall to my sides, then gathered the droplets, petals and leaves into a cloud over his head and let them drop onto him like his own personal light rainshower. He tilted his head up so that his face met the water as the petals and leaves drifted slowly over him. A moment later, it all subsided, and the water braid slipped back into the fountain.
He was staring at me with what looked like disbelief, though it was hard to tell with the mask.
I took a step towards him. "Please say something, Enigma."
"You're telekinetic. A powerful one."
I nodded. "It's why Morgan wants me; the numpty thinks I'll help him take the amulet, and the tablet. He kidnapped me but I ... uh ... persuaded him to let me go."
He chuckled, finally. "I bet you did. Kenna, I had no idea. And the guy with the knife ..."
I grinned with a shrug. "I really did have it under control. Very few people know about this, and I've always tried to keep it that way. You're the first person I've told in a long time. I'm sorry that I hid it from you, though."
He finally stepped closer to me. I could see that his face was still dripping from the rain. "Why would you be sorry? That was basically the coolest thing I've ever seen, and I'm on a team of professional Superhumans. It was amazing; you are amazing, Kenna."
He was very close now. If I wanted to, I could reach out and wipe the droplets of water from his cheek, where the light danced. My fingers itched to do this, while his strange golden gaze swept across my face, and my breath caught in my throat. He was mesmerizing. If I just leaned forward, I would close the gap between us, to where the corners of his mouth curved upwards.
"Kenna, are you up here?" The door banged open, sending me skittering backwards, away from Enigma. When I turned, I found Seb on the roof. "Oh, uh, hi ... Enigma," he stuttered, looking awkwardly between us. I didn't know whether to curse or praise him. "Sorry, I just wanted to make sure you got home okay, Kenna."
"I told him, Seb."
"Told him what?" He asked, clearly panicking.
I stared at him pointedly as the roof door closed on its own and water splashed from the fountain onto his arm.
"Right, that. You have no idea what I've put up with over the years," he said to Enigma, rubbing his arm with the air of a truly long-suffering older brother. "Picture it: your block cities knock themselves over. Your football gets itself lodged in a tree. Your bacon flies out of your hand and onto someone's plate." He glared at me, clearly not over that one yet.
I snickered, despite myself.
"Terrible," said Enigma, sounding amused.
"Oh she really is," Seb retorted.
"Alright," I interjected, not liking where this was going, "I'm fine, Seb. I've got my security detail and all so I made it home safe and sound. Actually, about that; I'm feeling pretty tired, Enigma, so I think I'm just gonna hang here at home and take it easy."
Coward, said the voice in my head.
"Of course," he answered, watching me steadily. "I'll head off now. Talk to you soon, Kenna. Nice to see you again, Seb." He promptly vanished.
"Uh, did I interrupt anything?" Seb asked with a sly look at me.
"No, shut up!" I said very maturely.
"Ohhhkay," he took a step back.
"Hey you know who looked really cute tonight? Lexa. Don't you think?" I shot wickedly.
"Um, I didn't really see her," he muttered and I grinned, heading back downstairs and glad for the distraction. The truth was my mind and senses were reeling from everything that had just happened, and almost happened. First Ewan earlier, and now Enigma. What was wrong with me? The worst part was, I'd freaked out inside and I didn't even really know what had been going through his head before Seb showed up, and then I'd pulled away so I had no chance to find out, like the coward I told myself I was.
I reminded myself that I didn't even know who he really was. This persona, and this life were just parts of him, and the rest was a mystery to me. At least when I'd met Cobalt, I'd also known him as Greg, even if neither part of him turned out to be much good to me.
This all coursed through me so I couldn't think of writing. I wondered what I'd say to Enigma when, inevitably, he was my guard again. I'd probably pretend like nothing had ever happened, and maybe he'd do the same. After I forgave Seb for either rescuing me or interrupting me, (I couldn't decide which I really thought it was), I belatedly congratulated him on his well-earned victories and we sat and vegged in front of the TV for the rest of the night.
As I lay in bed trying to will myself to sleep, I thought about all of the mixed emotions and impulses that had run through me that day, and reflected that for someone who'd been determined to hide out from both Supers and relationships, I'd sure found myself in a whole heaping pile of trouble.

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)

Deviant Rule
When their world changed, everyone began chasing the same thing. The emergence of an energy that could make you strong enough to take anything you wanted changed everyone. They blinded themselves to a part of the world's new truth. For them, the only truth was that the powerful would rule the weak. Alius was someone different from all of them. A deviation from the plan. It made him hated. His only question was why? Why did they think his path was wrong? Maybe... they were the ones who had made a mistake. (The warnings are mainly to give myself creative freedom in the future. While we're here, I would also like to warn you that there will be a decently chaotic release schedule. Add that to the first-time experience and you have a crappy story that might get better. Enjoy what you can!)
