《When I Met You(Gakuen Alice fanfic)》Chapter 22: Threat

One more day.
Tomorrow is the last day that everything changes. Even though I know, my hands can't stop from shaking while holding a cup of hot chocolate. I'm sitting in my room for one last time because I won't be coming back to it ever again. If by some lucky chance, I'll be living with Aoi back at my home town, we'll be with our parents again. Or, most likely, if everything that has led up today and tomorrow fails, then I'll run away. I'll run and never turn back. I'll forget about Aoi and Mikan and Imai and Ruka.
I'll forget it all.
Knock Knock.
The knob turns slowly and I take a big sip out of the cup. My tongue burns from the stingy sensation and I'm left in pain.
"Hyuuga. How are you doing?" Imai asks even when she knows just about everything that is wrong with me at this moment.
"Peachy." I snap and she sighs, shaking her head disapprovingly. "How's the plan going?"
"Hyuuga. You don't have to worry about anything. Yuu and I have found out where your sister is being held hostage. We'll save her while you take care of the Principle."
"What if we fail?" My voice cracks. I place my cup back on the nightstand and clench the blankets on my bed. "Then what? Won't I have to kill Mikan? Won't I have to kill her, just to save Aoi?"
"Wow. I thought you'd never call a girl by her first name. You can easily say her name with so much feelings in it."
I stay silent. She didn't answer my question at all.
"Listen Hyuuga. I'm going to ask you a question. Do you want to kill Mikan?" Her face has never been so serious before. Like she's sad. I've never seen such an expression.
"..." The tears flow from my eyes and my lips quiver. "No."
"Then that's your answer. Since you don't want to, you don't have to. Why do you have to complicate things too much? Just go for what you want and believe in it. Sometimes you're such an idiot. I can't believe I ever loved you." I rub my eye dry and look up at her. She loved me?
"Do you know what I told Mikan that one time when I visited her?"
"No..." I racked up my brain trying to remember.
"I told her that you are an idiot for never realizing I had mutual feelings for you. I said, 'I realized that I loved him and he was an idiot for ruining our relationship."

"Y-y... you loved me?" I repeat and she rolls her eyes.
"Duh. I did. Now I don't anymore. I've got interest in someone else."
"Why... didn't you tell me? We could've..." I stopped and she shook her head.
"I never wanted a relationship with lies. I don't know how Mikan deals with you because you never say anything. Eventually people will leave because you are always hiding things. You never tell anyone and you stick to yourself."
"..." I don't respond because she's telling the truth. I'm full of lies and secrets. She's also right about Mikan. She deals with it anyways and she pretty much has some secrets herself but at least she doesn't think of killing me like I do with her.
"It's time you man up. A girl like Mikan needs someone strong. A wimp like you can never accomplish anything."
Finally, I let out a chuckle.
I get up from my bed and run out the door, "Thanks Imai."
"Hn."
I run at full speed to the Hospital.
I have to see Mikan and tell her a lot of things. About why I came to take care of her. About my sister Aoi.
"Hyuuga-kun." a woman behind the desk greets me and I nod in her direction, "It's been a while since you've been here."
"Um, Can I see Mikan?" I breath heavily but I don't care. I have to see her. Her beautiful face. I have to hug her and tell her everything. Before it's too late.
"I'm sorry but you have to wait a little while."
"Why?"
She nervously fixes her bun and avoids my stare.
"She has a visitor today."
I smile a little, "Ruka? Can I see him too?"
"It's not Ruka Nogi, Hyuuga-san. It's someone important. I cannot say."
"Just tell me."
She shakes her head and looks at the watch. Okay... now I'm getting anxious. She's not telling me anything. So I slowly turn towards the hall and sprint towards her room.
"Don't go Hyuuga-san!!!" I hear the nurses yell and I ignore them.
It's a good thing that there are so many halls to get confused in. Especially when you haven't been here long enough to memorize each one of them.
I walk the rest of the way there until I find her room. The biggest room and the nicest one. I place my hand on the door first before doing anything. I haven't seen Mikan in like two or three days. She'll probably be mad at me or something. I hold my breath and open the door. She also has a visitor but who can it be?

I held my breath but now I can't breath anymore. It can't be... It can't be...
He's here.
He's talking to Mikan and she looks...no... her expression. I've never seen one like it.
Why is the Principle here, talking to Mikan?
"Ah, Natsume. What brings you here?"
I glare daggers into his back as he turns to look back at an equally angry Mikan. Why would he ask me why I'm here? He knows exactly why I'm here.
Ugh... I hate the Principle.
"..." Mikan doesn't even give me a single glance and I'm trying to draw her attention towards me but she's angry. Really angry.
"I should be asking you that." I challenge. The principle stares in amusement at my outburst.
"I came to talk to Sakura-san. I was wondering how she was doing lately." His voice tries to remain calm and I can tell.
His eyes are giving me a threatening look. He's threatening me. But why would he come visit Mikan?
"Well... since I'm clearly not welcomed here, I must be on my way. I'll see you at school in two days, Hyuuga."
My heart dropped at his statement. When I first agreed to his proposal, I didn't have to go to school the whole time. Now that this mission is almost over, I have to go back to school until I receive another mission. The Principal made a very cruel joke there and it's not settling well.
"Hn..." I fake a smile and dig my nails into my palms to restrain me from using my Alice.
Once he left I faced Mikan and she looked up at me for the first time in what seems forever.
"Mikan... What did he say to you?" I extend my hand to reach for hers and she pulls it against her chest, refusing my touch. "What's wrong?"
Her eyes land angrily at the floor and pushes the chair away from me. "It's n-nothing." She snaps and I take a step back.
"He came for something didn't he?"
"..."
"Mikan, tell me what he told you! Why would he come visit you?"
"I don't know!" She snarls with venom in her tone. My brows knit in confusion and I yell back at her.
"Tell me!" I push the chair back and lean close to her face to make her look at me. She frowns and avoids my intense heavy gaze.
"Why?" She whispers, "You don't care about a single thing. Why should I tell you anything? You still haven't told me why you've done a lot of things! I don't know anything about you, but I tell you stuff about me. You... you never tell me. So... It's none of your business what happens to me." Her hazel orbs shine in this corner of the room. I let go of the chair and run a hand through my hair.
I stare at the ground and my mind falls blank. I'm so angry and I don't know why. It's not even because of the visit the Principle made or what he said to Mikan. I'm really just angry for no reason. I got angry because she's too stubborn. I let out a roar of laughter and end up letting out a few tears just because of it.
"Hahahaha..." I wipe at my eyes and fall to my knees in front of her.
"What's so funny?" Her lips form a pout and I know she's trying to contain some laughter herself. I try to hold her hands again and this time she doesn't try to avoid me. I entwine my fingers in hers and I look straight at her.
"I'm sorry." The words sound so rough against my tongue but I say it anyway. The thoughts that are in my mind, "I'm so sorry for everything. I... I don't know what came over me. I was just thinking about a lot of things. I hurt you and left you to deal with it alone. I hope you find it in you to forgive me."
She stares at me and for a moment... I see her mother. The same expressionless woman that risked everything for her daughter. The one who finally smile until her final breath. And I'm scared that I'll never get to see that same potato girl that I met the very first day I came to this hospital. The one that changed my fate.
Her fingers tighten around my own. I stare down at our entwined hands and spot a dot of water. Then another and I look up to see Mikan shedding tears. It's bad because she's wearing a silky white blouse that shows just about everything that drops on it. And also she's not stopping. She keeps on crying. I reach up and wipe her tears away but they keep coming out. To stop them from dropping anymore I resort to blocking the way.
Our lips meet once more and my addictions starts once more. My addiction of strawberry kisses.
"Mikan." She nods as I press my forehead to hers, "I'm going to tell you everything now."
"Eh?" She meets my eyes and she never looks away.
"I'm going to tell you the truth."
