I know this probably isn't what the person who requested this had in mind when they asked for an au where Gold was a cat and Silver was a dog, but I thought about it and this idea just stuck.
The suggestion sorta reminded me of the faunus race from rwby and I wondered if they had skirmishes between people who were cats and dogs, so here I am.
Sorry if this didn't turn out as good as I had hoped, though I really like it and hope you all enjoy it.

--------------------------
"Son, as a member of the royal family, and the Felis race, it is your duty to uphold the responsibility of the entire country." Gold's father said to him, yet again for the third time that evening.
"I've got it dad." He scoffed, his ears twitching irritably.
"Do you? I don't think you fully understand the gravity of the war we are in right now. Those dogs think they can start a war with my country?! They have another thing coming." His father began ranting now and Gold rolled his eyes.
He stood up from the dinner table, "I'm done with my food. I'll be leaving now."
He could feel his father's judgmental stares as he walked out of the dining room into one of the castles hallways.
In his country they had been at war with their neighboring country for at this point almost a century. He was a member of the Felis race, cat-like with features of that of a feline. Their neighboring country was the home of the Canids, a more dog-like race.
He didn't see the point though, it was a needless war. If he asked his father why they were fighting, he probably wouldn't get a clear response.
He wished he could leave, he didn't want to be part of this war any longer. But he was the only child of his father, meaning that there was no one else to inherit the throne.
He left the castles main doors and entered the courtyard, walking as fast as he could as to not get caught by his father or any of his tutors.
"Where are you going young prince?" He heard a voice ask him as he exited the gate.
His ears perked as he recognized the voice and his tail twitched nervously. He turned to see the gate guard Crystal staring back at him with a stern gaze.
"I'm going out?" He replied, almost asking for her permission.
"Speaking of which, could you hold all of this for me?" He said, handing her his crown, cape, and other princely belongings. She was about to retort but Gold had already begun to run off.
"Thanks, see you later, bye!" He laughed as he made his way out into the streets of Leon, the capital city. Adults and kits of all colors and backgrounds flooded the city streets, it always excited him.
But he planned to run past all of this today, well not before he grabbed a little snack, he had left breakfast early and hadn't gotten to eat.
"Hello sir, one of your finest apples please." He said happily to a vendor on the street.
"Of course young lad, that'll be three coins." The man held out his hand to him and Gold happily gave him the money, exchanging it for the apple.
He kept walking about, happily making his way to the edge of the city, when a familiar sight came into view. At the edge of the city was the slums, poverty stricken without aid from anyone but their own.

A small child ran up to him, "Mister! Do you have anything today?" The child asked happily.
Gold crouched down and handed the child the apple he had just bought. He was going to eat it himself, but the kit's stomach had made a considerable amount of noise just a moment ago.
"Share this with your family." He said, "Also, give your mother this, okay?" He said handing a small pouch of gold coins to the child as the ran off with glee.
He often passed through and he knew most of the children here, it was just another reason he wanted to run away, he wanted to make a place where children like this didn't have to live in poverty, but he couldn't do that here, not under his father, or his father's advisor's careful watch.
He continued past the slums and found himself in an open field at the border of the two countries. A large tree over looked a cliff face and he climbed up it to scope out the world.
It was a beautiful perspective. If you looked along the border there was no city, nor people of any kind inhabiting the awe inspiring countryside.
"Hey there." A familiar voice called. Gold jumped down from the tree to meet face to face with his best friend Silver. Gold could see Silver's tail wagging behind him and it always made him laugh.
"Cant you control that?" He snorted sitting down.
"Sometimes." He said, laughing with Gold, "But its it's a lot harder than you'd think."
Gold's friend, Silver, was a Canid. Silver himself was from the poverty stricken side of his own nation, so he often came here to the border to get away, much like Gold.
Silver sat down next to him, he often had a hood on to cover his ear, though his tail was the most noticeable thing about him.
They sat there, watching the clouds go by as they often did. Gold had never known a friend until he had met Silver. Silver was a serious person, but not in the sense that Crystal was, he knew how to relax sometimes.
Gold felt something wet on his cheek and his head turned to look at Silver who had just licked him.
"Um, what the hell?" He asked, wiping his cheek off on his sleeve.
"What's the problem? I licked you." Silver stated plainly.
"Yeah, I know that. Why did you lick me?" He asked, his hair now standing on end and his tail twitching madly.
"Do Felis not do that?" He asked in all seriousness. He looked confused and Gold was losing it.
"No we don't lick people! At least not unless you're either closely related or engaged." He explained, "Do Canids do that?"
"Yeah, mostly as a sign of endearment though I guess." He said, leaning back on the tree, "Do you find it endearing?"
Gold felt his face turn hot, he didn't respond. Talking about things like this with Silver was weird. Canids and Felis had very different perspectives on customs, and what was culturally appropriate, which is why, he guessed, that they often fought.
But he didn't see anything wrong with it, their differences didn't have to be a divide.
"Is it wrong if I find you endearing?" Silver asked, his serious tone never wavering, "I'm not asking you to look at me the same way."
Gold looked into Silver's piercing metallic gaze. He had felt this feeling for a long time, but Silver's suggestion gave him the need to act on it.

He leaned over and pressed his lips to Silver's. It felt right, like he had wanted to do it forever, but now he finally had. He pulled back to see a smile on Silver's face and his tail lightly wagging behind him. He sat back up and looked on at the clouds again, his heart racing.
Gold thought long and hard, he didn't want to be here, and Silver probably didnt either. He had often talked himself down from suggesting this, but now was the time.
"Silver." He said softly, which was a little strange considering his usually outgoing nature.
"Yeah." Silver sat up with a questioning look on his face.
"Let's run away together." He suggested, "Away from all of this." He gestured to their kingdoms.
"Okay, but where?" He asked, which was a good question.
"To the forest, where they cant find us." He said excitedly taking Silver's hand and helping him up.
"I-I don't know." Silver said, his face looking panicked for the first time.
"We could make a place where poverty doesn't exist! Where we can live happily!" He said pulling Silver with him, running.
Gold dragged the boy into the forest, this what it, his life was going to begin here. He wanted to feel sorry for the castle staff, he wanted to feel sorry for the townsfolk that knew him, and to Crystal whom he had left his belongings with.
But he didn't, he was so happy. Happier than he thought he could ever be.
When they had run a considerable amount Gold stopped to rest for a moment. Silver heaving breaths of air as he struggled to speak.
"I don't think we should be here." Silver said warily, "I think we've crossed into Canid country, they don't like Felis people, especially if they find out you're royalty." He whispered.
"How would they find us here? We can be happy!" He said, his optimism overcoming him, he hugged Silver spinning in glee.
"Please just leave. I'm begging you." Silver pleaded in a tone that made Gold's hair stand on end. Something wasn't right. Gold looked up to see a face of sheer panic on Silver.
"What's going o-"
"Well done Silver." Gold heard a gruff voice behind him, "We'll send the sum of money to you after we present him to the king." They said.
Silver stood up straight, a serious face had overridden his panic, "Sir, I must request that this one be dealt with in a special manner, he is, in fact, that of Felis royal blood." He said with a wry smile.
Gold's blood ran cold as a Canid general emerged from the bushes laughing along with the person Gold had assumed to have been his friend.
"Silver, what going on?" He asked, and Silver shot him a bone chilling glare.
"Don't speak to me as if we're friends, Felis scum!" He yelled, his tail did not wag, his ears shot back indicating the threat. Gold own ears sank in despair.
This wasn't real, this was a dream. He felt something solid hit the back of his head, then Silver picked him up. In his last bits of consciousness he could've sworn that he had heard him say, "I'm sorry."
...
When he next found his eyes opening he felt the cold rough surface of stone. It felt damp and gross and it made the fur around his tail and ears cling to him.
The back of his head hurt excruciatingly, and he struggled to sit up as a migraine washed over him. Flashes of what had happened poured through his mind and he felt his heart clench painfully.
To think that Silver was working for the Canid higher ups the entire time. He wanted to believe that it couldn't be true, but a pit that he felt deep in his stomach told him it was.
He heard the dungeon doors open and he sat up.
"Hey, I heard you're the Felis prince. Quite a rare catch, I'd say Silver did a good job leading you into that trap." The warden sneered.
"Shut up." He hissed, his hair now visibly standing up. His tail lashed out and he saw the guard start laughing.
"Aww, the little kitty is mad." He howled with laughter.
Gold felt frustrated, no, beyond frustrated, but there was nothing he could do. Maybe his father was right, there was a reason for this war, Canids were horrible creatures.
The heartbreak that Gold felt festered into hatred. The hours he had spent there turned into days. He was hungry, for anything.
The more he sat there though, the more he realized that he didn't hate Silver; that he couldn't hate Silver. He was trying to earn a living, and if the kingdom offered him a reward for Gold's capture, he couldn't blame him for taking them up on that offer.
A new guard walked in, Silver behind him, the same plain face he had on earlier. Gold felt that his own care was deteriorating with the need to eat growing fast. He couldn't focus on anyone as much as he tried. His head dizzied and his eyes spun.
"Silver is here to talk to you scum, get up." The guard kicked him, knocking him over. Gold didn't respond, he didn't have the strength at the moment to lift himself up, nor retaliate.
"I said get up!" The guard kicked him in the stomach again, Silver's face behind him didn't even flinch.
"That's quite enough, these Felis are fragile, wouldn't want him breaking before our bargain." Silver said then the guard laughed and nodded.
The guard left them alone in the cell and Silver waited a moment before walking up to Gold. Gold looked at him with lifeless eyes from where he lay, and he could see that Silver's expression had shifted a little bit.
He couched down and lifted Gold up to set him against the wall. He pulled out an apple and handed it to Gold.
"Why are you doing this? What about the money?" Gold asked, he was disappointed that it had come to this, but if Silver could live happily, he found that he didn't care.
"I don't care about the money anymore. I was wrong." He said, lifting Gold once again into a standing position. He grunted, Gold helping him as they both stood.
"I want to make that place with you, the one where we can be happy." He said sincerely and his tail began to wag, "Though I'm not so sure I'm deserving of that yet." He confessed.
"This way." He beckoned Gold who had already eaten the apple, he felt a little more energized now that Silver was here, but he still couldn't shake a terrible feeling.
Silver led him to the edge of the dungeon, pulled a couple bricks out of place and crawled through. Gold pulled himself through as well and Silver stacked the stones back where they had been.
"How did you know about that?" He asked the Canid.
"I've been here plenty of times myself. I know my way around." He said cockily, "We have no time to lose though, we have to hurry!" He said grabbing Gold's hand as he made a run for it.
A little ways away a horse stood tied to a tree. Silver must've been planning this for the past couple of days. Gold felt his heart soar once again, they would be free, and together at last.
Soon they were galloping full speed towards the edge of the forest once more, but as soon as they thought they were home free, the sounds of guards on their own horses stampeding behind them became present.
Silver dropped Gold off of the horse, giving him a hood, good, "Run! I'll lead them away!" He said.
"Wait! You cant leave me!" Gold frantically grabbed for the Canid who pushed him away.
"I'll find you. Now go!" He kissed Gold, pushed him, and ran off on the horse, drawing the attention of the guards.
He was alone again, the sounds of horses in the distance terrified him. He didn't know if he or Silver would survive, but he would have to be strong to find out.

Candle burning in the dark
This is the story of Alyssa and Mireille, two girls in a world of Magic. They are forced to leave their homes by differing circumstances and must come to terms with their own magical abilities and the problems those bring. Alyssa is hunted for what she is, while Mireille is not certain what and who she wants to be but drifting along is not an option when her life is on the line. They live in a world that is torn by strife where humanity is not the pinnacle of existence. This is a world of high fantasy. It is my first written story. I am a non-native speaker. I will not go out of my way to shock people but the content will at times be traumatizing for sensitive people. At the moment I would guess the story to be PEGI 16 perhaps? It's light on the profanity at least? Cover from unsplash.com
