I wanted to get in on the whole Mermay thing going on since it's been all over tumblr so heres a Mermaid!Green fanfic.

Shy Green is something that everyone needs.

Also, while I was writing this I was imagining what his tail would look like, and I swear I always aggressively wish for fanart but I'm always too lazy to sit down and make it myself. Oops. I'm better at writing than drawing anyway lol

"Ow what the hell?" Green hissed under his breath as he held his side. A Mako Shark had swum by and its tail had slammed into his ribcage. He lifted his hand to see a small cloud of red pour out of a wound.

"That's not good." He gasped putting his hand back over the wound. The last thing he needed was to be in the middle of a shark frenzy. He sat there for a moment, judging the distance between himself and the rest of the MerPeople, his breathing was becoming abnormal.

His sonar reached out, he had been swimming a lot longer than he thought he had. His school was on the edge of his senses. He needed to leave, and soon before more sharks caught a whiff of his blood, but he may already be too late for that.

Sharks didnt often get a chance at MerPeople, they tended to be a very careful species, but everyone knew that when sharks frenzied there was no stopping it.

'Yellow!' He called out through his sonar, 'Blue!'

No one responded, he must be too far away. He felt the threatening presence of more sharks riding up on him. He flipped his tail and made a run for it away from where the sharks were. His head was getting dizzy though from the blood loss.

He turned to check behind himself and lo and behold, three sharks were rushing towards him at shocking speeds.

"Why did it have to be Mako?" He asked himself. He could outrun the other sharks, but it wouldn't take long for a Mako to catch up to him, especially in his weakened state.

When he turned back around he felt his arms tangle and grab in what looked like a fishing net.

"Dammit!" He wrestled with the net to no avail. It wrapped around his arms and his tail effectively trapping him. The adrenaline pumping through him fueled his desperation as he flapped his tail and dug into the net with his arms.

"Damn humans!"

Just then he felt a blunt object slam into the back of his head, likely the tail of a Mako, knocking him out cold.

Next thing he knew, he had awoken to a sharp pain in his ribs, his skin burned, his eyes had to squint in the bright light, and he felt dry, really dry.

He sat up as best he could, he was on solid ground which that alone wasn't a good omen. If he were in the water, bottom feeders would have likely picked him apart by now.

But he wasn't in the water, which might've been worse. Every now and then he felt a wave lap at his skin, rocks on all sides jabbed into him, one especially sharp one poked his ribs.

...

His attempts at sitting up failed, he didn't often find himself on land as it were. He heaved a huge breath, he could breathe air, but it was a lot harder than breathing in water. He found that if he laid just right, the water washed over his face, keeping him hydrated.

As the heat bored down on him, his vision faded, he was tired, he couldnt will himself to sit up. Was this the end?

His eyes closed slowly as he fell into darkness once again.

Feeling slowly crept back to him, first a tug. Then a heave, then for a while, he felt like he was being shaken, like he was riding on a bumpy current. The heat was begin to dry his skin, his tail feeling dehydrated.fed rates. He was going to die.

...

With a gasp Green sat up where he was, his tail lashing out and creating a huge splash. His eyes frantically searched the place he found himself in. He sat in a small container filled with water, the rest of his surroundings seemed enclosed save for an opening to his right.

His tail was still waving frantically as he tried to have himself up, his arms slipping on the sides of the container.

"Hey, whoa calm down! I'm trying to help!" A voice said to him, he looked towards his tail and found a man, now several feet away from his tail, looking at him with concern.

"I can't cut you free if you're trying to kill me with your tail." He said, sighing, before sitting closer to his tail again. He pulled out a knife and Green flinched.

"I'm not gonna hurt you, I'm trying to get this fishnet off." He said, "I already got the part around your arms off, bandaged up your side too." He pointed towards Green's torso with the knife. Green felt his hand roam over the bandages, his wound did feel a little better, but he still had no reason to trust this human.

"Where am I?!" Green yelled. Well, he had meant to just say the words, but he found that they escaped his mouth much louder than he had intended. It took a lot more force to get words across underwater it seemed.

He cleared his throat, his face turning a bit red, "I mean, where am I?" He said in a much quieter tone.

Red looked at him with a curious smile before continuing work, "My name is Red, this is my house."

"House?" Green wasn't exactly sure what a house was, humans did the most peculiar things.

"You know, where you live? Spend your time when you're not working? Hang out with friends. That sort of thing." Red explained, though some was mumbled as halfway through the sentence he put the knife in his mouth to pull a piece of net away from Green's tail.

"You dont move from here? Seems boring doesn't it?" Green scoffed.

"I do, I leave quite often, but I always come back here to rest. Don't you need someplace familiar?" He asked, his eyes never leaving their spot.

Green watched Red work, he was a weird human, or maybe they were all like this, but something about the tone of his voice felt nice. Familiarity seemed like a weird concept to Green, why stay in one place? What was the point?

"I've never settled anywhere, we're always moving. What's good in staying in one place anyway? Speaking of which can you put me back?" He asked, sneering at the man.

"Familiarity, friends, love, memories, everyone has their own reasons. Though there are people who move a lot too. And no, not until your wound is healed."

"They must be the smart humans." He rolled his eyes, he didn't need this human taking care of him. He shifted in the container and felt the pain in his side flare up.

"So I'm guessing you guys..." his red eyes roamed over Green for a moment, making him uncomfortable, "Mermaids? Merpeople? Do you have any connections, like love or memories?" He asked, pulling the rest of the net off of Green with a grunt.

"Merpeople is fine. And I have friends, sort of, but its it's not like I need petty things like connections anyway, that's not how the ocean works." He said, "But I do have a question for you. Were you not shocked to see a Merperson? I was shocked to see a human, and I know of their existence."

Red chuckles a little and Green felt his face heat once again, "I didn't say anything funny!"

"I know," He laughed, "but you're right. I should be shocked, and I was at first, but you were hurt and dying and I wanted to help. So here I am." He beamed and Green felt his chest tighten. He didn't like it at all.

"Well, its it's pretty late, so I'm going to sleep. Do you need anything?" He asked as he stood in the entryway a soft gaze about him.

"Stop that."

"Stop what?" Red asked, his gaze more questioning now.

"That look, it makes me feel weak, like you pity me, I don't need a human's pity." He said, Red laughed a little sarcastically.

"I see."

"But-!" Green interjected before Red left the room, "some salt water would be nice." He said, quietly, hating that he had to rely on Red for this.

"Can it wait until tomorrow?" Red asked yawning.

"Yeah." Green replied sinking further into the container.

...

Green awoke to a tap on his shoulder. It was early, he was tired, who dare to interrupt his sleep?

His mind raced with memories of the night before. The generous stranger, Red, who had tended to his wounds. He wouldn't say it out loud, but he was very thankful that someone had happened upon him, and was glad that the someone was Red.

"Red...?" Green groaned as he stretched, his sore muscles pulling at him.

"I need you to sit up for a minute come on!" Red replied, Green was still half asleep and unsure of what was going on.

That is until he felt Red out an arm under his tail, and then one under his back, lifting him out of the container. His eyes shot open and his tail kicked out on instinct, knocking him out of Red's arms to fall face first on the floor.

He flipped himself over, his face a scarlet hue as he looked upon Red in confusion, "What the hell were you doing to me?!" He said in a confused rage.

Red held a hand to his face, covering a red mark where Green's tail had slapped him, "Ow! That's what I should be asking you!" Red lashed out for a moment before returning to his normal self.

"Sorry, I should've waited for you to wake up, but I don't know how Merpeople work. I didn't want to leave you in that water longer than you needed to be." He said, holding up a bucket of ocean water he had likely gone to get that morning.

Green looked at Red, who smiled despite the large red spot on his face, who held up the bucket of ocean water, who was here in the first place. Green was being a jerk, and he now realized how much of an ass he had probably come across as.

Here was someone doing everything within their power to help, but it still wasn't good enough for him. He didn't have to trust him right away, but he could be a bit nicer.

"Thanks..." Green mumbled, embarrassed. He slid himself back until his back was against a wall of the room. Red smiled again, he seemed to do that a lot, though Green couldnt that he hated it, and leaned over to drain the water out of the container.

"What's that called?" Green asked curiously.

"A tub."

"What do you use it for?"

"Cleaning usually, but I guess in this case you use it to house a Merman." He laughed.

The joyous bubbly personality that Red gave off was refreshing, Merpeople didn't tend to have that feeling about them. It was a new feeling that Green could get used to.

"How long until I can go back?" He asked, aching to get back in the water. He was worried about losing his current school, he struck out alone a number of times. He just didn't want to stick with a human for longer than he had to.

"Maybe a couple of days. It should be better by the end of the week." Red commented while he poured the salt water into the tub.

"Do you need help getting back in?" Red asked, wary of Green's tail.

"No..." Green said proudly assessing the tub, he tried to think of ways he could have himself in, but he had never had to maneuver outside of the water.

"Maybe..." he said quieter, before finally giving in and replying, "yes."

Red nodded and walked over to him, crouching down a little. He looked at him for a moment, making sure that he wasn't going to pull the same stunt as last time.

"Stop staring and get on with it." Green said looking away as Red lifted him up, setting him back in the tub.

Green sighed in relief as the salt water poured over him. He dipped his face in the water and his tail splashed it onto the rest of him. He could finally breathe normally now.

"Hey, you finally smiled." Red said, and that tense in his chest that had shown itself yesterday pulled at him again as he gazed upon the beaming man.

Greens face returned to its stone cold nature when he commented, "I expected you to be pestering me with questions. Humans seem to do that when they find something they don't know much about. Why haven't you?" He asked.

Red pondered for a moment before scratching his head sheepishly, "I hadn't thought about it." He said plainly and Green practically fell out of the tub.

"What do you mean 'never thought about it'? I have a tail! Aren't you amazed?!" Green said, sounding really full of himself, but he didnt care right now.

"Well, you're practically a human with a fish tail right? What's there to ask? Other than how you got into this mess I guess." He said.

"I am not like you. And I got tangled up with some Mako Sharks, and then I got stuck in a net."

"You sure act pretty stuck up for someone that's 'not a human'." Red let out a laugh and Green felt himself become hot. This man was insufferable, and yet... Green felt he had been starved of this kind of interaction, like being with this man was satiating some feeling within him. Filling a void.

"You're trying to drag me into your petty connections aren't you?!" Green suddenly blurted and Red stopped laughing.

"Connections can't be forced on people. They just happen."

...

That sentence stuck with Green for the next couple of days, it was all a lie wasn't it? He grew up believing that if you didn't want to be a part of someone's life, you didn't have to be, so he never was. But he felt like the same case couldn't be applied to Red.

He felt himself drawn towards him and as much as he wanted to say that he hated it, he was growing quite fond of their banter.

"Humans do what now?" He laughed as Red told him about humans.

"We ride horses, sometimes to get places, sometimes for fun. But its it's a little outdated now." He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Green was having a hard time grasping it.

"So... its it's like hitching a ride with dolphins?" He tried to compare it to something he knew a little better.

"I guess so..." Red replied.

They sat in silence for a moment, and Green took a moment to really look at Red, as he took in the vibrant personality of the one next to him. That hate from a couple days ago dissolved into admiration.

"Re-"

"I should be able to take you back tomorrow. So you should rest up tonight." Red cut him off, standing with a stretch, "Oh, were you going to say something?" He asked.

"Nothing..."

Before he knew it the next day had arrived, Red had brought him to the shore he had found him on, Green sank into the water, reveling in the feeling of being free once again.

He laughed and jumped in the water, swimming and kicking to his heart's content as Red laughed and cheered him on. Red himself at some point had jumped into the water with him and began swimming as well.

Green swam circles around him while Red tried to keep up.

"Your stumpy human legs are no match for my tail." He said with a cocky grin.

"Oh yeah?!" Red kicked off the rocks, grabbing Green, as they laughed.

It felt as though, this world held only them, like Green's lonely world opened itself up to another. This was the memories, the connections, the familiarity, the love that Red had told him of.

"My name is Green." He said finally, holding onto Red as he saw that the human was having a little bit of a rough time staying afloat.

"Nice to meet you Green, although its it's a little late now isn't it? You'll be leaving soon." He said bittersweetly.

"I'll see you again." Green said, not wanting to give up this newfound feeling, nor Red himself.

"When?" Red said, sounding distant. Green looked at him sarcastically, before hiding a blush that crept onto his face.

He let go of Red and looked away, suddenly more aware of their contact.

"Shut up with that sappy shit, I still feel a bit sore. I'll be back tomorrow." He said, "See you then I guess." He hurriedly swam off leaving Red to laugh at his antics.

He could see Red all he wanted, he wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.
