"Dude, you know what day it is?" Gold asked the bored sophomore walking next to him excitedly.
"Gold I have a girlfriend, I'm well aware that tomorrow is Valentines day." Ruby told him, Gold may have been older by one year, but he was certainly way more excited about chocolates and cards than most people.
Gold ignored the loud sigh that the red eyed male gave him and continued talking, "Wow, I can't wait for all the presents and chocolate! People call you 'the charmer', right? Then you probably get a whole lot too." Gold said with a smile.
Ruby sighed again, "You know that's not what Valentines day is about, right? I'm almost afraid to ask why they call you 'the breeder'." he said, throwing Gold a glance.
Gold laughed, clearly amused at what Ruby was implying, "Nah man, I'm like a top member in the ACP (the Animal Care Program), there isn't a better breeder out there." he boasted.
"Right." Ruby stopped at his locker, and Gold stopped at his own, luckily they were right next to each other, which was half the reason they often ended up walking together anyway.
Gold opened up his locker and smiled, there were all sorts of goodies that had been slipped through the opening in the front, cards and letters too. Some were clearly from his friends, others were secret admirers or people asking him out.
"Oh yeah, I put mine in there too." Ruby commented, pointing to a bland looking envelope.
Gold gave him a questioning look, Ruby didn't like anything unsavory or un-unique, which made it weird that his card looked so, normal. He opened the card, and in the blink of an eye, glitter sprung forward covering him.
Ruby burst out laughing, and Gold grumbled, barely taking the time to read the card,
"This is for that little gag from new years. I'm still cleaning paint off of some of my clothes.
- Ruby"
By the time he finished reading, the boy next to him was wheezing. He put the card up and rummaged through the rest of the goods. A smaller envelope caught his attention, much like Ruby's it had nothing on it, but the back said 'anonymous'.
Gold carefully peeled the card open and read it,
"To Gold,
If you're not interested, trash this card, but if you are the next card is located here: A locker that only a gemstone star has the key to.
-from, Anonymous"
Gold reread the writing, it seemed like some sort of game, like a scavenger hunt almost, and it sounded fun. This person had certainly piqued his interest.
"What's it say?" Ruby asked before Gold handed him the card. He read over it and contemplated it for a moment, "It's your call, you can trash it, or you can follow the clue. I can't help you though." he said.
"Later." Ruby waved to Gold, leaving him by the locker and running of to class.
Gold thought over the clue for the entirety of his next class, pondering on what the 'gemstone star' might be. He wasn't good at these things, but he still wanted to try and get to the end. He never turned down a challenge.
"What's got you hooked?" Blue, a senior in his class, asked.

"I can't figure out this clue." he said, staring down the card as if it would answer him if he looked at it long enough.
"Let me see." she took the paper and read the clue, "You're stuck on this?" she laughed, "Go ask Crystal." she enunciated Crystal's name and winked, and suddenly it became clear.
Crystal was the gemstone, and she wore star earrings everyday. Now Gold was practically slapping himself in the face, he should've gotten that on his own.
But no matter, he needed to find Crystal now.
"Hey, Kris!" Gold called to the blue haired girl on the other side of the classroom. It was study hall right now, so the teacher didn't mind them moving around and talking.
"Hey Gold, what's up?" she asked, shooting a glance to the card he held in his hand, then up to him, "Whoa, what happened?" she dusted some excess glitter off of him. He had tried to shake most of it off, but it stuck in his hair, on his jacket, and on his arms and face. He'd have to make sure to get Ruby back for this later.
"Ruby happened." he sighed, "But that's not important right now, can we go to your locker? The next card should be in there according to this." he handed her the card and she read over it.
"Yeah, just a sec." she turned to the teacher, "Can Gold and I go grab something from my locker really quick?" she asked.
The teacher looked up at the desk and judging looked at the both of them, "Don't go doing any funny business." the teacher said.
"Of course not sir, you know I'm not into that Valentines day stuff." she said.
Crystal wasn't big on Valentines day, which was kind of a bummer seeing as guys would probably jump at the chance to try and ask her out. They were a little too afraid though, Crystal could be a bit intense at times.
"Here's the only letter in my locker." she handed him another bland envelope.
He opened it and read the text,
"To Gold,
If you're looking for someone to buy you chocolates and goodies all the time, trash the cards and stop here. I'm not here to try and win your affection, I'm here to accept it if you have any for me. If not, I'll get over it. The next card is located here: One of the new freshman has an appetite, and when he brings lunch, it's got more than your average palette. His friend however has a quaint lunch with room for a letter, this time, not a gemstone, but a metal.
-from Anonymous"
This letter actually had something about the sender in it, and although he wasn't too pleased about the lack of prizes at the end, the general sincerity of this person's feelings were starting to get to him.
This clue was a little tougher, he wasn't well acquainted with the freshmen. But it had said that one of them had an appetite, maybe that meant that he ate a lot. Gold would have to look out for him at lunch.
Lunch time rolled around and Gold ate his lunch quickly so that he could look for the freshman. They generally flocked together, so it wouldn't be that hard.
As he walked past the tables he saw all kinds of kids, but none with any features that stuck out to him. That was until he came upon a younger teen that was making his way through what looked like his third bowl of rice, his friends sat next to him, seemingly unfazed by the sheer amount of food their friend was consuming.

"Um, excuse me." Gold asked, a little intimidated by the kid who was eating more than he could dream of in one sitting.
The big looked up, along with a girl and another boy who sat next to him. Now that he saw their faces, he knew he had seen them a couple times. He had never had the chance to have a full conversation with them though before.
"Need something?" the blond asked, he seemed a little on edge about being approached by an upperclassman.
"Yeah, I was wondering if any of you had received a letter?" Gold asked, it was hard to try and talk to these kids about personal matters, he felt a little awkward. That and the fact that the black haired male hadn't paused I his eating since Gold arrived.
"What's your name?" the black haired girl asked, nudging the black haired boy so he would stop eating, probably to be polite.
"I'm Gold, and you are?" Maybe there was a hint in there names.
"I'm Pearl, this is Platinum, and the one with the appetite is Diamond." the one named Pearl responded for her. It was like these three were joined at the hip.
Platinum. That was a metal. Diamond and Pearl were gemstones. So it was her.
"So you're the metal that has the letter, right?" he asked her, and she nodded, pulling the envelope out of her lunchbox.
"You caught me, they told me only to give it to you if you had solved all of the puzzle." she said.
"Gotcha. Well, see ya around." he waved them off and Diamond immediately began eating again, Pearl chastising him for being rude.
Gold read the letter:
"To Gold,
Congratulations, didn't expect a dunce like you to make it this far, but I'm glad your committed. In truth I like you more than chocolates and trinkets can express, which is why I hope you'll accept me without all of that. This is the last one, so if you're bored, go ahead and trash this card. The next card is located here: You're favorite place to hang out, especially when life gets you down. I'm not sure why, but being here always seems to cheer you up.
-From Anonymous"
Gold frowned at the first part, whoever wrote this knew it wasn't his forte. They were probably laughing at him from the shadows.
Gold felt a familiar sting in his chest, like the writer was someone he knew, someone close. There was no evidence of that, but he felt like he was starting to piece together who it might be, although the pieces seemed just out of reach. Not letting him see the full picture.
But he knew where his favorite place was, this was less of a clue and more of just a gimme. The person probably knew that these were exhausting Gold's patience, so that meant they knew him better than he realized.
He made his way outside, the was a giant tree with gnarled branches put back of the school. He could lay down under the tree and sleep, or he could climb the tree and look at the sky. It was an over all comforting place.
When he got to the tree his best friend Silver was sitting on one of the branches, his legs swinging a little, then falling limp, as if he was trying not to catch himself doing something childish.
Gold chuckled to himself, quiet enough that Silver didn't hear. Watching Silver like this was fun sometimes, all the little movements, mannerisms, Gold could watch Silver all day long.
"Hey." Gold said approaching the tree. Silver nodded to him and scooted over on the branch so that Gold could sit down. Gold sat next to him, feeling his side brush against Silver's, there wasn't much room on the branch, but Silver often came out here with him when he needed to cool off.
It was like a secret spot for both of them. Which made Gold wonder why he was here.
"You good man? Anything happen?" Gold asked, a little concerned.
"No I'm just waiting." Silver replied monotonously, his face unchanging as he looked at the sky.
Gold and Silver had fought a lot when they were younger, freshman year was exceptionally bad, but now that they were older they had mellowed out a bit. Silver was one of the only people Gold felt he could trust everything with, and the gravity of that feeling shocked Gold to the point he had almost forgot about the letters.
"Oh yeah. Have you seen a letter, someone's been leaving me letters and they said the next one was here." Gold asked him, something felt a little off about asking Silver for a letter from another person. He couldn't quote place his finger on why though, so he pushed the thought from his mind.
"Oh yeah, here." Silver pulled the last card out of his pocket and handed it to him.
Gold took it from him, the person seemed to be leaving it with random students, or maybe Platinum was the only random one. Anyway, Gold opened the last letter and read it.
"To Gold,
Happy Valentines day, Gold. I'm glad you made it to the end. You may not know it, but I've actually liked you for a long time. I've seen people give you gifts and chocolates for Valentines day, but that's not what gets your attention. And although I doubt you'll like me back, it makes me happy to know that you put in the effort to find the end of this letter."
As Gold read, he felt something tug at his chest. It was painful, like he was hurting someone dear to him. Nevertheless he continued,
"I set it up like this to sort of test what you were willing to do for a secret admirer. Now you're probably wondering where I am, and if I'll show soon, but don't worry, I will. I'm actually a lot closer than you think. But I just want to say that I'm not going to tell you how I feel in this letter, it has to be in person, so when you're done reading, look to your left."
The message cut off, no 'from anonymous' or anything like that, signifying the end. He reread it a couple times and decided to follow the instructions.
He looked to his left and found Silver staring back, his usual scowl replaced with worry and regret. Before Gold could say anything, Silver put a hand up, stopping him.
"I love you, Gold." he said, looking down at his feet as he swung them, not caring how childish he looked, just wanting something to focus on other than the black haired boy next to him.
"Oh." was all Gold could say at first. He was baffled, he hadn't known that Silver even liked people, let alone him.
And yet, a feeling of relief wafted through him. He wanted Silver to be the one, that's why he had felt that he knew the writer, knew it was someone dear to him.
And it was.
And he had just responded to a confession in the lamest way possible. Silver thought he was an idiot, but Gold found him even more stupid for loving an idiot like him.
Suddenly the chocolates didn't matter.
Gold grabbed one of Silver's hands and pulled him forward, Silver closing his eyes tight. Gold wrapped his arms around the smaller boy in a large hug, catching Silver off guard.
"I love you too." Gold said, "Sorry it took so long."
"It's fine."
They sat there for a moment, Silver wrapping his arms around Gold too. Gold could get used to this, Valentines day from here on out would be great.
"So, you won't get me chocolates after school?" Gold poked Silver's sides, teasing, and Silver punched his arm.
