Not quite sure how good this is, sorry. I really like the idea of this one, but I'm not too sure how it ended up. It came up a little short and I think I could've written it out longer.

The songs Ruby sings are "Going Under" by Evanescence, which I happened to be listening to while writing this, and "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars, cause I needed a love song and that's the first one I thought of despite the fact that I don't listen to Bruno Mars that often, lol.

"Sapphire get off of him."

Sapphire turned to see the coach with a disappointed look on his face. She grunted and stood up, pushing off of the boy below her.

"Sorry coach." she said, her face flushed.

She hadn't meant to do that, she was supposed to run the play that they had rehearsed, but when the runner with the ball had passed her, she had tackled him almost on instinct.

"Why don't you sit out of this one? Go back to the gym." Coach sighed and Sapphire knew she had messed up. The looks from the other players told her too.

Red, her friend and a senior, smiled at her, trying to tell her it was fine, but she knew that this was happening too often to be good for her sporting career.

"Yeah." she left the field and made her way inside, taking off her uniform and pads, throwing them in her locker.

"Damn it!" her shout echoed through the locker room. If she kept this up, she'd be cut off the team. She just needed to listen, but that was always a problem she had. She felt she needed to take things into her own hands constantly.

She felt like an idiot.

She slid into a changing stall and slipped her practice shirt off and put on her normal clothes. She put a towel around he neck and began to put her things away in her backpack, then she heard a noise.

No, noise wasn't the right word. Music. And damn good music at that.

She peeked out of the locker room and looked around the hall, it was coming from the choir room.

Some student probably left some speakers on in there when they left, though the song sounded like a cover. A cover that was better than the original, because she had never heard this song sung this good.

"Always confusing the thoughts in my head, so I can't trust myself anymore!"

Whoever it was sounded really into it, she saw the door was cracked and decided to open it slowly, the music getting louder.

"I'm dying again. I'm going under!"

Now that she heard it in its full volume, it was much more beautiful than she expected. She peered around a corner, further into the classroom.

A boy sat there, a guitar in his lap, eyes closed, lost in the song he was singing. He leaned into the lyrics and occasionally opened his beautiful red eyes to check his fingers placement on the guitars strings.

"I've got to breath, I can't keep going under!"

Before she knew it the song was ending, she found herself still staring at the boy. He glanced at the click on the wall and began to put away his guitar. He pulled out his headphones and looked up, locking eyes with Sapphire.

He jumped back a little in his seat, clearly flustered, "Wha- What are you doing here? Did you forget something?" he asked and despite her best attempts at pushing the thought back, his voice was pure magic.

She tried to speak and at first it didn't come out, but as her face started to cool down, she was able to get it out, "If I give you tickets to the next game, will you play for me again?" she blurted.

That wasn't what she meant to say, she wanted apologize and leave without another word.

"Um, I don't really do that sort of thing..." he said, just as baffled by her outburst as she was.

The boy jumped again as Sapphire slapped herself, leaving a big red mark, "I'm sorry, your voice is really pretty. I'll be leaving now." she practically shouted.

As she made her way our the door, ears steaming, she felt a warm hand grab her wrist, "Wait, I'll take you up on that offer." the boy said, letting go a little too quickly.

Sapphire's eyes brightened, she didn't know her school had this good of a singer, "For real? Our next game is next Friday, be there." she said, turning to the door to save herself from any more embarrassment.

"When do I play for you?" he called out the door to her as she ran out the door.

"Tomorrow." she called back. She couldn't wait to hear him sing again.

...

The next day at practice, Sapphire couldn't clear her mind. She wondered what song he'd sing, if he was okay with singing at all. She wondered if he even wanted to come to her game.

What if he thinks I'm a brute?

The boy, she realized that she hadn't caught his name, seemed a little delicate. He probably liked girls who were into music like him, or at least prissier girls. Not a Football fanatic like her.

But he had agreed, and who was she to worry who he liked, she didn't like him, she liked how he sang. It was a coincidence that he was just as pretty as his voice.

"Sapphire!" she jumped from her stupor as another player tackled her to the floor.

She sat up and accepted Red's hand as he helped her up, "You good?" he asked, "You've never been that out of it during practice before."

"Yeah, yeah, I'm good." she said, clearing her head for a moment.

"Coach, can I leave a little early? I have something I have to do." she ran up to their coach, hoping that he'd let her.

"We have a game next Friday, are you going to be okay? First you're acting impulsive, now you're not paying attention, if you're not in top shape tomorrow I'm going to have to bench you." he said, sighing.

She knew he was right, but she needed to hear that boy again.

"Of course, coach."

"Alright, you'll stay the entire time the rest of the week though."

She beamed at him, before taking off, making sure to yell "Thanks!" behind her as she ran into the locker room to change and then out into the hall.

She didn't hear him this time, maybe he was waiting for her. She hoped he was. To be honest, she didn't even know what kind of guy he was.

She opened the choir room door. It was silent, and for a moment she was scared that he had changed his mind, but a quiet humming filled the room.

She looked into the room and there he was, sitting in the chair, humming while he was drawing something, a pencil in his hand and his face serious. He had glasses on, which he hadn't had on yesterday, but she couldn't say that she didn't like this look too.

"Heya." she called quietly, trying not to scare him like last time.

He looked up from his sketchbook and began putting away his pencil and paper. He looked a little uneasy, like he didn't do this often, and she wondered why. He had a voice that rivaled that of most celebrities.

"Uh, hi. I'm Ruby, I forgot to tell you last time." he stood up and went in to shake her hand, which she took even though it was a bit formal for her tastes.

"I'm Sapphire." she said.

There was an awkward pause, a little too long, but she didn't know what she expected after yesterday's exchange. He looked around, avoiding her gaze before turning back to his chair, pulling out his guitar and sitting down.

"I guess I'll start playing then... Any song that you'd like?" he asked, trying to sound confident. Ruby came across to her as... what she could only describe as charming.

"Can you play me your favorite song?" Sapphire asked him, in truth she couldn't think of anything at the moment, she was too captivated.

"Umm, sure." he replied, thinking for a moment, "It's not necessarily my favorite, but this song has been stuck in my head for the past day, so is that cool?"

"Yeah." Sapphire replied, pulling up a chair.

"Okay." he sighed getting ready, playing the opening strings on the guitar.

"Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining."

Bruno Mars? Sapphire wasn't exactly fond of him as a singer, but the way that the lyrics rolled off of his lips was breaking her apart.

"When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change, cause you're amazing. Just the way you are."

Sapphire leaned forward on the back of the chair, crossing her arms over the top of it, resting her head. She saw Ruby smirk and continue singing.

"Her lips, her lips, I could kiss them all day if she'd let me."

Ruby looked caught between cocky and embarrassed at the lyrics, and when Sapphire caught on she felt herself grow a little hot.

All too soon his song ended, the guitar ringing out and the small heave of Ruby's chest were the only thing that proved that their encounter had happened.

Before Ruby could say anything Sapphire asked him, "If I win this next game, will you play again for me?"

Without hesitation he nodded.

And so Sapphire made it to all the practices that week and the next. It sucked that she wasn't able to see Ruby as much due to that fact, but it was worth it if he would sing for her again.

She had learned that he was in the fashion club in the school, which was why he had been sketching before, and she caught his gaze occasionally in the hallway.

He was an utter mystery to her on all other cases, and that made him all the more alluring.

The fated day had arrived, she had slipped him the ticket to her game in the hallway, and now she was waiting for him to show up in the stands.

Just before the game started, she saw him make his way to a seat. He waved at her and she waved back happily, Red shooting her a weird look, followed by a knowing smile, to which she felt her face grow hot.

The game was close, but it was the final quarter and Sapphire was ready to push for that final pull ahead.

She got the ball and began to run it towards the in zone, when she heard Ruby yell in encouragement, she pushed that extra mile and scored a touchdown.

Ruby ran up to her after the game to congratulate her.

"Wow Sapphire you did great!" he exclaimed, happy at her achievement. Little did she know that there was another reason.

"Thanks." she said, not quite sure of what else to say to him.

"You looked amazing, and... I have a question for you." he said getting a little closer.

She had only known him for two weeks, and she knew that most high school relationships didn't work out too well, but there was something about Ruby that she found herself drawn to, it wasn't just his voice or his looks.

She found herself drifting closer too, unprepared for the question he was about to ask.

"If I play for you whenever you want, will you go out with me?"
