Green could remember the first time, it was fairly early on his journey. Mew stood before him, it's brilliant glow had caught his attention in the woods near Palette Town. His Charmander was no match, he had figured that out after the first attack, such a fantastic Pokemon was not to be taken lightly.

He called his Pokemon back as Mew drifted away.

"What d'you think you're doing?! You almost had the thing, you know?" a boy in a red cap burst from the bushes in front of Green. This guy was an idiot if he thought he could take Mew.

"My turn then, Poliwhirl go!" a small Poliwhirl appeared, it was obviously way to weak to be challenging anything of Mew's level. Green sighed, sitting back and watching as the trainer's Pokemon was thrown backwards with the force of Mew's psychic powers.

People like this kid annoyed Green, "Know your limitations, or you'll only beat yourself." he sneered at him.

He could hear a faint voice under the boy's breath, "I actually lost..."

At that moment, he felt something warm tinge in his heart, and for a moment he thought that he might've felt what people knew as "The Lover's Light". But he brushed it off, there was no way he was even going to see this guy again anyway, let alone have any connections with him.

The Lover's Light was a thing that Green had heard his sister Daisy drone on about for a better part of his entire life. She fantasized about the subject, and it was no wonder that every time Green felt something in his chest, he was a little paranoid.

Whenever you fell in love with who you were destined to, a soft light would glow from your chest, even if you yourself weren't aware that you were falling in love. Green didn't like any of that stuff, he didn't need anyone, let alone someone who was "destined" to hold him back.

He scoffed at the thought and left the forest.

Green was really surprised when they met again. A Poliwhirl shuffled out of the bushes, it looked pretty ready for battle. Without thinking Green ordered Charmander to attack, "Ember." and as expected, it took it down in one shot.

"What? Did you do this to Poliwhirl?!" A trainer rushed over to his Poliwhirl, Green recognized him as the same trainer from the other day.

"I thought it was a wild Pokemon when I ordered Charmander to attack, don't take it personally." he smirked at the lowly trainer, if his Pokemon fainted that easily from an attack like Ember, he had a long way to go. Green was leagues ahead of him.

He hated people like this guy who didn't know when to quit, he knew he was leagues below Green, but he still persisted, Green didn't know why.

"You'll pay!" the boy yelled lunging at him, Green caught his fist in his own, stopping it just before it hit his face. Did this trainer not see how much better he was? Did he think they were on the same level?

"Nonsense." Green said, when he heard a rustling in the bushes, "There you are! I've been looking for you but you tested my patience." the Kangaskhan he had been looking for appeared, "Charmander, attack!" his small lizard blew a burst of flames.

Green threw a Pokeball at the creature, but it swatted it away with a mighty swing of its arm, it baffled Green, "My attacks didn't work? Charmander continue!"

"Wait stop! Poliwhirl!" the trainer's Pokemon shot water at Green's Charmander, effectively knocking it out of the way. What was this kid doing? He almost had it!

"Is your baby, okay?!" he ran forward, placing a hand on the beast's pouch.

"Huh?" Green watched closely as the trainer talked to the baby that popped put of the pouch, he talked soft and gave it an antidote, it must've been poisoned.

Green felt that small heat in his chest again, and he panicked, storming off.

He could hear the trainer running behind him, "I'm Red! What's your name?" he called after Green.

Green felt annoyed that he had lost that Pokemon, but that was vastly overshadowed by the anger and frustration at the feeling he was getting, he couldn't look Red in the eyes right now.

"Well?" Red asked, waiting for his response.

"If it will get you to shut up, my name is Green! Now leave me alone!" he stormed off, he hoped he never ran into that trainer again.

...

The truth was, he ran into Red many more times after that. They had met again when Red had accidentally bumped into him, jumbling their Pokemon. And again when Green found himself possessed in the Pokemon Tower. He found that they were headed different directions, but ultimately down the same path.

Every time, that little heat he felt in his heart grew stronger, and it was a feeling he had begun associating with Red himself out of habit, as much as he hated the thought.

And it continued to happen, even during their championship match, Red ultimately coming out on top despite Green's valiant efforts. To his surprise though, he didn't mind as much as he wanted to.

He wanted to be angry that Red had stolen the title that he had strives for. He wanted to be frustrated that his victory was stripped from him. But he wasn't, he was proud to see that his rival had come so far, from being a nobody, to the best. He was happy that he had been there to see his entire rise to fame.

If anything, he was frustrated with himself, he didn't want to feel this. Especially if it was for a person he had looked down on for so long.

...

He had no idea how they ended up like this, his mind blanked and he couldn't recall what had led up to this, though he still felt traces of residual anger.

He could hear Red's heaving breaths in front of him, matching the sharp look in his eye. They had been arguing about something, but it dangled on the edge of his mind.

His forearm pressed into Red's shoulders and collarbone, effectively pinning him to the wall as Green looked down on the trainer. He tried to gather his thoughts to continue the argument, but he couldn't no matter what he tried.

Red raised a brow, his hardened look starting to fade away slowly, "So...?" he asked, an edge to his voice.

Green couldn't figure out how to respond, and before he knew it, he was telling the truth, "I forgot what we were arguing about..." he said, his face heating up.

He was going to try to think of a lie, but it was too late for that now. Red's harsh gaze never wavered, but he saw a look of confusion fly across his face, and then something else.

They sat in silence for a moment, Green telling himself to just let go, but his pride made him stay firmly planted against the black haired boy.

Green felt that same little feeling in his chest, and he wondered why it was happening now of all times. He didn't want this, he had obviously just been in an argument with Red, why did this feeling have to wash all of that away?

As Green held his gaze on the boy, something truly miraculous happened. Red hid his eyes, looking down, and Green sat in wonder for a moment. Until a small glow emminated from under Green's arm.

On instinct Green let go and backed up, but Red still leaned against the wall, staring at the floor. The light grew brighter, until it was very obvious that the luminous glow was coming from the boy's chest.

Red looked up at Green, his face twisted between anger and something else.

"Love...?" Green found himself saying.

Red loved him? How could that be? He always talked down on him, bragged about how he was better, they were rivals.

So why did Green love him back?

Green felt that little feeling burst to life in his chest, letting the feelings flow freely as the warm light grew from his own body. All those years that they had spent together, hating each other, it was all leading up to this.

When Red saw Green's light he gasped, but found himself walking forward. Out of sheer curiosity, Green didn't interfere when Red's hand found the spot on his chest that the light came from.

"It's warm." was all he said, which was weird considering how talkative he usually was.

But just like that the glowing stopped, and they sat in silence again. This was too much for Green to handle right now. There was too much going on.

Without warning, Green began to walk off, leaving Red where he was. Red looked after him, not sure whether to be hurt of relieved that Green was the first to walk away.

"Meet me at the gym later. We can talk about... Things." he said before flying off on his Charizard's back.

It wasn't like they'd never see each other again. Because Green knew that they were bound by fate.
