《What's Really Hood》FOURTY-SIX

The school halls were quieter than usual. Students kept to themselves while traveling to their next destination. The sight is unusual considering the bad reputation the school has. Seeing the halls so quiet first thing on a Monday morning is very rare. Usually, the halls are buzzing with students talking about how their Saturday went.

Instead, they spoke in hushed tones about the funeral that took place over the weekend.

Students parted ways to let China, Michael, Trinity, and Chris walk together in silence throughout the hallway as they made their way to their first-period class.

It's been almost a week since Kae's death, and things are very different. Usually, when the squad walks into the building, they'd be so loud that teachers inside of classrooms would shush them for interrupting their lesson.

They drew attention to themselves without even realizing it.

Kae being the loudest and vibrant would stand out the most out of the group. Although she's small, she does have quite the volume on her and a lot of energy in the morning.

People whispered and stared as they walked past, making Michael extremely annoyed.

"Fuck Y'all looking at?" Michael yelled.

And like that, the hallways went back to its regular self. Buzzing with students, sounds of lockers being slammed, and the principal making announcements over the loudspeaker.

"I'll see Y'all next period," China said as they approached her classroom.

They all nodded and Michael pulled her into a tight hug, wrapping his arms around her waist.

He kissed her forehead, "I love you." He said mumbling. "Text me if you need anything."

China locked eyes with Trinity as Trinity gave her a stern look. "I love you too," China responded breaking the eye contact.

It wasn't a lie. China loves Michael with all her heart, probably more than she loves herself.

Trinity rolled her eyes and walked away. She felt bad for Michael, but most of all guilty. She contemplated whether she should stay out of it or at least give Michael a heads up.

"Micheal wouldn't do the same for me if Chris cheated." She mumbled to herself.

So she shrugged it off walking to her math class.

"Later Chi," Chris said following Trinity. "Baby, wait up." He called out after Trinity.

Trinity ignored him and continued to her math class, picking up her pace. Hearing Chris struggle with his crutches as he tried to catch up to her made her smirk as she walked into the classroom.

Considering there's almost five more minutes before the first bell ring, the classroom was empty. She walked to her original seat where Michael sat next to her and took out her math binder.

Being in this room brought back many memories, memories that made her laugh, smile, and most of all cry.

Trinity closed her math binder putting her head down on the desk.

She didn't want to be here, but she already missed so much school already, if she stayed home she would've been even more behind than she already is.

Chris made his way to his seat in front of Trinity, next to where Kae used to sit. He sighed, leaning his crutches on the wall and sat, turning around in his seat to face Trinity.

"Baby, I know you're going through some shit right now. All of us are, but please don't shut me out. I'll come to your house or you come to mine, it doesn't matter and I'll explain it to you, okay? I promise I'm not cheating on you."

He waited for an answer and once she never replied, he kissed her on the head and turned around in his seat as students began piling in the classroom.

Michael then strolled in, taking his seat next to Trinity. He looked at Trinity then at Chris, confused why they're not sitting next to each other.

Chris just shrugged his shoulders taking out a looseleaf and a pen from his empty book bag.

"Good morning everyone." Mr. Johnson said walking into the room as the late bell signaled.

He closed the door behind him, walking over to his desk. He was surprised to see his three favorite students sit before him. Even though the three of them give him the most hell and makes him raise his voice, he always looked forward to seeing them every day for their antics.

Realizing there was an empty seat beside Chris, Mr. Johnson's face saddened. Then his eyes landed on Trinity, who appeared to be sleeping. He cleared his throat giving the class his undivided attention, leaving Trinity alone. If it was any other day he'd be on her ass making sure she does her work.

"Why are you staring at me? Y'all know the drill. Take out your homework so I can check it."

He took his laptop out of his bag and set it up on the projector, projecting last nights homework.

"Good morning ladies and gentlemen." The principal began speaking on the loudspeaker, causing the class to quiet down. "As some of you may know, we lost a fellow student not too long ago. We would now like to have a moment of silence for Ms. Kaelyn Young."

The class became eerily quiet, so quiet you could hear a pin drop. A loud screech following with a slam of a chair disrupted the silence, catching the attention of everyone in the room.

"Trinity," Michael called watching her head towards the door.

Chris looked up watching Trinity walk out, "Babe, where you going?" He called after her.

He reached for his crutches until Michael put his hands on Chris' shoulder.

"Just give her a little space bro."

Chris sighed sitting back in his seat, defeated. He had a feeling but he chose to ignore it, hoping it would go away. He was afraid this would happen. This whole time, Chris thought that her thinking he cheated made her act like this, but it was something much bigger and serious than that.

A few moments passed and Chris began to get worried. He didn't think this would happen so soon.

"Thank you for the moment of silence everyone, Kaelyn will be dearly missed. If you are in trouble or you know anyone who's in danger, don't be afraid to speak up. My office along with the guidance counselor's office is open to anyone who needs help or wants to talk. School is a safe environment and a violence-free zone. Have a safe day and enjoy."

"Okay everyone lets go over the homework."

Chris swiveled in his seat to face Michael, "Bro, I have to tell you some shit, but China needs to hear this too."

"Alright we all got third period together so talk to us then," Michael replied taking out his homework.

"Bet."

Trinity roamed the quiet halls, not really sure where her destination is. Classes are still in session so the hallways were empty. Not having anywhere to go, she made a right down the dimly lit hallway, deciding to just head for the bathroom.

"Yo!"

Trinity ignored the call and continued to the bathroom. She didn't want to be bothered and she clearly wasn't in the mood.

Before her hands can even touch the door handle, her body was thrown against the lockers. She hissed in pain feeling a bruise forming on her back.

"I know you heard me calling you bitch."

A tall dark skin boy appeared in her vision. He wore a Nike Tech hoodie with matching pants and a pair of Jordan's.

"Get off of me!" She said trying to fight the boy off.

He had a tight grip on her shirt and had her pinned up against the wall. She didn't know who he was, but she saw him around.

"Mya, is this is her?" The boy asked over his shoulder.

Three girls and another boy stood behind him, watching silently. She didn't know any of them but she sure has seen them around, they were definitely seniors. She may have gym class with one of them.

Mya nodded stepping up to Trinity, "Where is China?"

"Do I look like her fucking keeper?" Trinity barked.

"Watch your fucking mouth." The boy spat gripping her shirt tighter.

"She fucked my man and now there's a problem. Since I can't get to her, my last option is to get to you."

"So you had to get a whole group of people to pin me down because you know I'd beat your ass, huh bitch?" Trinity smirked.

"Say something smart again and say I won't knock your little ass out right now."

Trinity glared at the boy as he got closer to her face, "You're a bitch for willingly wanting to fight a female. And you," She said glaring at Mya, "You should be looking for your boyfriend who cheated. What sense does it make attacking China? Your man should've known better, get your priorities straight."

"Keep talking shit and you'll be dead just like your fucking friend." The other boy spat walking up to her.

"Damn Justin, you ain't have to say all of that" The boy who had Trinity in a tight grip said.

His grip loosened as Trinity smoothly broke free and punched Justin right in the nose. She pushed passed the rest and ran towards the nurse office, with tears streaming down her face.

She entered the office slowly with her hands trembling. It was slightly bloody and slowly started to bruise. Trinity's face held no emotion as she met eyes with the school's nurse.

"Whats the matter sweetheart?" The nurse asked putting on her glasses that sat around her neck.

Trinity remained silent and sat in a nearby chair, staring at the white wall.

"Oh, it's your hand." She got up and got an ice pack from the mini fridge, wrapping paper towel around it. "What'd you do to bruise your hand so badly?"

She tended to Trinity's hand while watching her intently. Trinity didn't react or paid her any mind and it worried the nurse.

"Sweetheart, I've seen you around the school hallways. I know you're not deaf or mute. You're not leaving until you tell me something, or whats wrong. We can start with what's your name"

The nurse walked away and sat back at her desk, taking a sip of her coffee and filling out paperwork.

Moments later, Trinity acknowledged the nurse giving her a bored look, "Trinity James. Can you call my father so he can sign me out?"

"Alright everyone, I know it's been a really stressful month for all of us, some more than others. On this Monday morning, we'll just do some easy work today. If you have any work to make up, feel free to do so. Keep the volume to a minimum. Thank you."

Once Mrs. Edgehill sat down at her desk to grade papers, everyone got out of their assigned seats and went to sit next to their friends, including Michael, China, and Chris who's assigned seats were at each corner of the classroom. Mrs. Edgehill made sure to separate the three of them since they almost always distract the whole class and each other.

"Trinity skipped second period," Michael told Chris as the three of them all met up at an empty table.

"Yeah, we have American studies with her and she never showed up." China chimed in. "I hope she's okay. She hasn't been answering her phone." China pouted growing worried about her friend.

Although they haven't been speaking as much as they usually do, China was scared shitless for Trinity's safety. She couldn't lose yet another important person in her life.

"I got some serious shit to tell yall." Chris sighed rubbing his neck. "It's about Trinity."

"Well?" Michael said waiting for Chris to continue.

"Before Jasmine went home, she gave me a letter and it had some serious shit in there."

"Can you just tell us already? You're making me nervous." China cried out.

Chris sighed running his hands through his hair, "Trinity is bipolar."

Dear Chris,

I know it may seem weird that I just walked up to you and randomly handed you a letter, considering we never really had a conversation before. I know you and my best friend have something deep between you two, and I want whats best for her. I won't be around since I have to go back home soon but I think it's best if you know this. I'd hate to have you blindsided and clueless when shit hits the roof.

Trinity's mother is no longer in her life because she's bipolar. This disorder causes her mother to be at the very highest and then the lowest of low in a matter of seconds. She often enters Trinity's life and then leaves as fast as she comes. I don't remember when was the last time Trinity has spoken to her mother, but I believe it was a little before Trin moved to New York.

Her mother took all the money her and her father had and left them dry. This has always been a thing her mother does, but it was never this serious to where her father wanted to move so far from California until now.

There's a great chance that Trinity might be bipolar too. I can't tell you the signs of this disorder besides the ones I already explained that her mother has. I don't know when her bipolar will trigger, I don't know what may trigger it, I don't know anything.

Chris, you have to make it your job to make sure Trinity's okay. Make sure she isn't in any trouble. Reach out to her father, he should know what to do. Take care of my best friend.

Thank you,

Jasmine.
